How to replace a file in Finder

I am trying to back up my iPhoto library, which lives in an external hard drive (My Passport) to my Seagate external hard drive. Usually, I can go in Finder and drag and drop the most recent Library over-top of the backup. A pop-up will appear asking if I want to replace the existing file (yes) and the backup takes like 5 or 6 hours... I have 300 GB of pics.
With OS X Yosemite, when I drag the file and drop it in the backup hard drive, it doesn't recognize that there is already a file with the same name, so it tries to make room to add the new library, when in reality I want it to replace the existing (outdated) backup.
I downloaded this for the Seagate external, which hasn't proved useful http://www.seagate.com/support/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-p lus-desk/ntfs-driver-for-mac-os-master-dl/
and I tried holding down Option, and Command, then dragging... nope. I can't figure out how to get it to replace, or merge, the files. It just tries to keep putting it in as a separate file.
Please help!

OS X cannot write to an NTFS formatted drive. Whatever driver you got from Seagate probably doesn't work with the version of OS X you have. Is there any reason you could not reconfigure the drive for OS X? If you can the first thing you will need to do is to reformat that drive to MSDOS (FAT.) It's best to do that on a PC, but you can try reformatting it on your Mac using Disk Utility and setting the Format type to MSDOS. It may take a couple of tries. Once you get it formatted for FAT, then you can repartition and reformat the drive for OS X.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
If you need to use the drive on a PC, too, then I suggest using NTFS 12.1.62.

How do I drag files in Finder to a different folder?

First, open one Finder window, and then, open another one pressing Command and N keys.
On one window, go to the folder where the files are, and on the other one, go to the folder where you want to put your files. Choose them with the Command key (or select all if you want to transfer all of them, with Command and A keys) and drag them to the other Finder window

  • How to replace event file AND replace edits in timeline

Is it possible to replace a video/file in an event, and in turn replace what it was used for in the timeline? For example, if I used some footage from an event and I cut i up 3 times in a project and added transitions and effects, is it possible to replace the file in the event with a new file (same length) and have the same cuts/transitions/effects applied to the new file in the timeline?
I hope my question is clear. I've been trying to do this in the original media folder but with no luck.
    Thanks!

hit cmd-c in the Project to copy the clip('s settings)
select the new clip in the Event
drag on old clip, select one of the replace-options
select replaced clip, cmd-alt-v, apply effects/colors/…
I would NEVER dare to 'fumble' with the internal file-structure of a data-base (=FCPX)
Yeah I've learned that the hard way. I'll probably never do that again. Anyways, I didn't think about copying the clips settings. That definently works. I guess what I was looking for (or dreaming of) was some kind of automatic way. In After Effects and I believe premiere, you can right-click on a file in the "Event" folder and it will replace it the project as well automatically. I don't think anything like this exists for FCP however. I'm pretty sure the only way would to wait for apple to add something like this, or create some kind of script/plugin/automater. Any ideas?

  • How to replace a file in an archive without extracting?

Hello, I need to open up an archive and replace one file with the other. As archive file is and actual .ipa file (I'm just changing its type), I don't want to extract it and then re-zip it and rename it to .ipa.
It's beyond simpleness on Windows OS, but on a Mac you can only see content of an archive and extract any chosen one, but not replacing it directly.
Maybe there are simple terminal commands to do so?
    Thank you.

  • How to replace multiple files in same location Indesign CS6

Hi everyone please help me with this challenge if you are avialable it will be greatly appreciated!
Ok I have a spread of about 60 pages in indesign.  I created a template where I have differnt PDFs in each section.  I have 3 different PDFs per page totalling about 180 different PDF docs in my in design file.  Every week I have to go in to replace those PDFs with the new ones.  They have to be in the exact same place and sized the same way since they are setup to print on one of our printers.  In indeesign CS3 I would just do Command D and then I would select all 180 PDF documents.  It would import all of them and I would just click on each area of the PDF holding down "Option" and it would automatically size the PDF to fit in the same way the previous PDF was.  Basically just replacing it.  I did this for all 180 relatively simple.  Now that feature is gone!  I can't for hte life of me figure out how to do this.  I've tried everything and it's not working.
    Can any one help me?

Make Object style to your frames and setting the Frame Fitting Options>Fitting
Also try: tomaxxiPlace2 script, i test it with indesign cs6 and it work fine.

  • How to replace a file with itself copied and corrected in AE

I  stabilized the files already in the FCPX timeline with AfterEffects, and exported in a new folder, same lenght and filename than the original, just prores422 instead of h264.
What is the best way to replace those in the timeline with these new corrected files ? (making sure they will be positioned as they were before).
    Thank you

Do you still have the original timecode on the file that came from AE? If yes, use reveal in browser to find the timecode at the beginning of the clip in the timeline. Import the AE output file. Go to the matching timecode, mark an In and drag to the timeline onto the clip to Replace from start.

  • How to replace .VSD file in KM

    Hi
i have to change an image in KM content. i tried following steps:
    Content mangmnt>document>content manager> my folder..
There i find folder(consists of some images) and some html files .Each html file has some folder associated with it, that particular folder carry the images used in html code.
now the image that i need to change is an .vsd file. The same image is saved as .jpg in the related folder .They have given the path in xml code to drag the .vsd file,
now the pbm is that i am not able to debug the path And i found out if i delete the whole xml, the image is still coming.
so where the image it is taken from ???. i did all hit nd trial but unsuccessful.
    Please help if anyone knows..
    thanx
    Disha

    Hi Disha,
If i have understood you correctly, the image is part of a html document and has a img file ext .jpeg instead of .vsd.
If this is the case, go to Content Admin - KM Content - your folder.
Select the html file and click on the context menu next to the file name. Now click on "Edit Online" and open the same with a "Text Editor"
Search for your img file name in the same and replace the path with the actual path of your vsd file.
You can find the path of your vsd file (if avl in the portal) in the Details - Properties section of the file.
Note: Try clearing the browser cache if the changes you have made doesnt get reflected.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I trash files when 'Finder' is inoperable?

I am trying to take some files off my computer but since my finder isn't working I don't how how to trash them.
Anyone know the answer to this?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, snoot. If your Finder isn't working, your computer is largely nonfunctional. That seems like a much more important problem to fix than trashing a few files.
It's probably time you did an Archive & Install of your operating system.

  • How to display hidden files in Finder?

In Carbon Copy Cloner, I can see that there are hidden files on my internal hard disk.  They have names like .apsidal, .Younity, etc.  What settings do I use in Finder to display these files?  I thought that using the System files are included setting would work, but it doesn't.  Thanks

Choose Utilities from the Finder’s Go menu, open the AppleScript Editor, and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
    try
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is not "1" then error

  • How to copy selected files in Finder (applescript)

I don't like to use hotkeys (such as CMD+C, etc.) and would prefer to copy and paste files in OS X with the mouse just like I did in Windows.
Unfortunately Finder has no such copy and paste buttons in its toolbar like I know them from Windows Explorer. It bothers me that I always have to use the context menu or hotkeys. So I intend to write small scripts with AppleScript and move them into the Finder toolbar to have my custom made buttons.
Unfortunately I am newbie to Applescript and did not yet manage to get such simple script to work despite many trials.
The first script must only copy marked/selected files or folders in Finder to the clipboard so that I can paste them into another Finder window.
The second script should simply paste the clipboard content into Finder.
I tried this but nothing is being copied:
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    key down {command}
    keystroke "c"
    key up {command}
    end tell
Would be great if somebody can help me with these few lines.
    Thanks in advance

meanwhile got a reply in another forum that works like charm exactly as I want...I post it here below for future newbies...
    tell application "Finder" activate
    delay 0.2
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "Finder"
    keystroke "c" using command down
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
save as program and then drag to Finder toolbar.
You can even change the icon.
    Thanks for your attention guys

  • How to replace media files to pre-existing FCP, retain edits?

Here's the gist: I accidentally imported footage from 2 tapes as DV instead of HDV. I didn't notice this until the project was more or less done, but I need it to be HDV.
Basically I have 2 files set up as a multiclip that toggles between each other. I figured once I re-captured the new HDV footage and designated the same IN points as the previous DV footage, my EDL in the Final Cut project would sync. This is not happening.
My theory is that I didn't set any IN\OUT points prior to capturing the video, so my time code is not aligning.
Can anyone think of what to try so I don't have to re-edit the entire project from scratch?

You can use regular ATA drives in the G4 (I have 4 in my mirror drive door G4 for a total of 820gb).
I wouldn't use Media Manager in this case. Just do a simple drag/copy from one to the other, copying the MOST important files first. Remember, you can always recapture or rerender so those file may be sacrificed if you're running out of time.
Try to set up the exact same folder structure on the new drive - it may help FCP reconnect the media quicker, especially if you get another Firewire drive and give it the same name as the old one (once you disconnect the old one).
If FCP does have a problem reconnecting, check the box where is ask to "Reconnect Manually" then navigate to the new file. When you reconnect the first one, click the box that says "Connect all offline files in relative path" (or something close to that) and FCP should be able to find the remaining files on its own.

  • How To Copy/Access Files From Finder To iCloud?

Is there a way I can quickly copy files from my Finder window directly into iCloud without having to drag and drop into the web browser window? I like to use my apps in full screen as much as possible and unless I've missed a shortcut of sorts, I have to go through the process of exiting full screen for the purpose of having to drag and drop the files?
I tried Command-C to copy and then paste but that didn't work.  My preference would be to have full access to my iCloud files through the finder window.  Did I miss a setting in Finder Preferences?
    Thanks

This is the closest I've come but it doesn't allow you to copy files to the folder in the sidebar:
