How to replace a key on keyboard

hello
one of the keys popped off my keyboard, the letter "I"
only the key came off, the white bracket thing still attached to the grey thing.
i tried to push down on the key to see if it would snap back on, no luck. i have done some searches on how to fix it, all were not very clear.
i recall speaking to a person a long time ago about this, he said its hard until you know how, then it is easy.
any suggestions=?
right now i am typing with the "I" key just kind of balanced in position.
Thanks,
wayne

This should help you fix it:

  • How to replace Insert key? Need for Maya!!!

Hi, I've just bought MBP 2.16 Ghz, 100 Gb 7200rpm, 2 Gb RAM for graphic prog-s a. animation. But there is no INSERT key on my keyboard, which I really need for Alias Maya.
Does anybody know how to replace the INSERT key with key combinations or somehow?
    tnx

I think... and I use the word think loosely...
That you can go into system prefs --> keyboard & mouse --> keyboard shortcuts and add the function you want... it can be overall for the OS, or it can be specific for the application.
I hope that works for you.
My external keyboard doesn't even have "insert"... so it may not be possible

  • How to link eject key on keyboard to external cd/dvd drive?

I'm using an external Lacie cd/dvd drive with a Mac Mini to rip over 7,000 cds so I'm trying to find the most efficient way to do this. I will often rip cds while watching a tv or movie. I use my tv as my monitor. I have my itunes preferences set to rip and eject when finished. My problem occurs when I accidentally insert a cd that I've already imported or one that has mutliple entries to choose from on CDDB/Gracenote. A dialog box comes up asking if I want to replace, don't replace, choose album title, etc. At this point I want to be able to use the eject key to eject the disc and insert the next one in my stack. I don't want to have to pause my movie, swicth input jacks on my tv to view my desktop then manually hit the eject icon within iTunes. Why is it so hard to disassociate the eject key with the Mini's built-in drive. Didn't Apple think people would be using external drives?

Once again thanks guys but Ejector simply adds an eject icon onto my menu bar. I want to be able to eject a disc from an external drive without the need of switching off whatever movie I'm watching, changing the input on my tv to vga for my Mini, eject it from there and then do the whole process in reverse. Maybe I'm not being clear...I am NOT using my Mini to watch movies, tv, etc. I am using U-Verse or my Blu-ray player. I am ripping cds while I am watching movies. The ONLY solution is to be able to eject by using the eject key on my keyboard. Anyone?

  • How to replace Vaio Flip 15 keyboard

So the keyboard on my Flip 15 just suddenly stopped working. Doesn't even work in the BIOS. I tried a hard power off and the battery-off pinhole, and nothing helped. The backlight still works, and if I press Capslock on a USB keyboard, the green light on the laptop on the Capslock key lights up just fine, but not a single key on the keyboard does anything. The Windows logo key on the screen still works, and the Assist button still works. Good thing the BIOS menu supports the touch pad AND the touch screen! I wanted to see if the keyboard was replacable, so I can go about ordering one off eBay or something (unless Sony sells parts directly??), so here are some pictures I took along the way. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step1.jpgAfter power off, turn the battery power off by holding the paperclip for 2-3 seconds http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step2.jpgAfter removing the 3 rubber feet, there are 10 screws to remove http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step3.jpgPry the case open gently and work your way around the edges. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step4.jpgThere are 8 screws holding the battery in. Remove them and remove the battery. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step5.jpgAlthough only the top left of these 4 screws is directly holding the keyboard in, remove the other 3 and rotate the flaps up to release the two ribbon cables. Removing the hard drive here will make it easier to push on the bottom of the keyboard later. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step6.jpgAgain, only the top left screw shown here directly holds the keyboard in, but the last screw attached to the keyboard is behind this metal, so losen the other 5 screws here labeled 1-5. Those 5 will not come out all the way. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step7.jpgDisconnect the fan power by pulling it straight up. The last screw attached to the keyboard is behind the metal as shown. I just bent the assembly out of the way slightly to get to the screw. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step8.jpgYou can see here where the holes behind the hard drive are, which lets you easily start removing the keyboard.Only unsnap the top, left, and right sides by pushing up and working your way around. The bottom of the keyboard (closest to the touch pad) will just slide upwards and out after the other 3 sides are released. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step9.jpgHere is another view with everything removed. http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step10.jpgThe back of the keyboard, showing where the 3 screws attached. The ribbon cables for the keyboard attach to the motherboard by sliding the release forward (not rotating it up like the ones overtop of the hard drive). http://ark42.com/sony/keyboard/step11.jpgKeyboard fully removed. Circles show where the 3 screws attach on the back. Well, hopefully that's all useful to people. I put it all back together and the laptop still works fine. The keyboard still does not work at all though, but I know I can replace it myself now.  *edit* Probably going to order http://www.ebay.com/itm//171781254290 because it doesn't look like Sony sells direct parts that I can find anywhere. Ordered http://www.ebay.com/itm/260951528702 instead for like $2 more, because Ships from Canada seemed quicker than Ships from China.

If it's the same issue (dead keyboard controller on motherboard or something else related to the hardware but not in the keyboard itself) then the backlight will come on when you change screen modes, when the laptop wakes up from sleep, when it first turns on, etc, but it will NOT light up just from a plain old keypress. Also, I called Sony for a quote and to see if I could send it to them for repair. They would not give me any prices and would not let me send it in. The only option according to them was to take it to Best Buy.I went to Best Buy and they told me they cannot take any Sonys for non-warranty repair and would not give me a quote or allow me to pay for any repairs. So in the end, even if you WANTED to pay for a repair for the keyboard, you won't be able to it looks like. Sony doesn't want to support their laptops at all anymore. Of course, the price of a new motherboard would basically be the same as buying a new laptop, so it's all pretty moot anyway. This is the last straw for me regarding Sony though. I've never owned a single Sony thing that didn't have all kinds of strange problems.  From a Sony blu-ray player that stopped spinning up discs after a year, and cameras that stop retracting the lens after a year, it's pretty evident that Sony does not equal quality. Meanwhile, my Samsung TVs, LCDs, blu-ray players, and even cell phones are all working fine after 10+ years for many devices. Never had a single bad Samsung product, so it's too bad they don't make 2-in-1 laptops like this at all. The only other big name I know is those super-fish-infested Lenovo things.

  • How to replace squeaky key on Retina MBP

    Hey guys,
Does anyone have any directions for lifting off a key on the MacBook Pro retina keyboard? I have a squeaky spacebar and I'd like to avoid the hassle of taking this in to the Apple store which is a decent trip to get to. Seems like it'd be an easy fix to just lube the key mechanism a bit an dpop it back on.
    Thanks!

You are still under warranty.  If you mess up, your warranty will be voided.  Apple Stores are not the only places to have a Mac repaired -

  • How to replace shift key?

I was having trouble with my left shift key, so I decided to pop it off but I used too much force and all the little bits underneath went everywhere, nothing is broken but I don't know how to put it back on. Is there a help page for this specifically? Thanks.

Head to System preferences / language and Text, click on the "Input Sources" tab, choose "British".
If you have keyboard input menu showing in the menu bar, make sure that the British flag is flying there in the appropriate spot.
You will now find that "Shift 3" (not "Shift 4) gives you the £ key (as on old style typewriters, from memory, as well as on standard PC and Mac UK keyboards)
If you really want it to be "Shift 4" instead, then have a look at Ukelele. This excellent utility lets you create keyboard maps of your own choosing.
    Cheers

  • JavaScript Slideshow: how to hit a key when keyboard isn't shown?

    Hi All,
There is a Site with some Images presented using a JS slideshow. There is a keyboard control implemented, e. g. hit 'space' for next image. Since there is no textfield detected by safari the virtual keyboard doesn't appear and I cannot use the keyboard controls. Any hint or do I something wrong?
    Thank you.

  • How to replace key on keyboard

    Hi
I can't replace a key that came of my keyboard. can someone help me?

Assuming you have a replacement key, or you have the one that came off...
Place the key in the correct orientation over the spot it came off of. Push down on the key so it fits into the indent that is under the key. If you hear a small snap or click, then it's locked to the plastic retainers and should not come off. If it comes up on only one side after this, then push firmly down on that side.
    Hope this helps!

  • Qosmio X series - keybaord key come off, how to replace it?

    Hi guys,
I have problem with S button on my keyboard was not working properly after pressing (didnt bounce back) so I try to fix it. LOL I clean it but I am not able to put it back in the plastic rack under the black button is broke and I am not able to put button back in. Do you know how I can fix it and where to buy missing part in UK?
I have contacted with Toshiba and I can send my laptop for warranty repair but that will takes like 2 weeks. And it is just bloody one key from keyboard.
    Regards
    Chris

It's pretty easy to do, get something thin like a credit card and run it along the bottom and sides of the keyboard and there are several bracket things that will pop the keyboard up when you pressure them. There will be a couple of cables to clip out behind it so lift it up gently.
You should be able to find a video on youtube anyway!

It shouldn't be too hard to track a replacement down.

  • Left command key has broken off - how to replace?

So a few days ago I caught my left command key with my nail and the top half of it lifted away from the mechanism underneath. I pressed it until I heard it click back into place and then merrily continued using my computer as usual. Today I was typing and the whole thing just came off under my thumb, which is annoying to say the least.
The biggest issue is that as I was trying to reconnect key to mechanism, the little criss-cross doohickey came off as well! I am left with a little silicon nipple which, while titilating, is not really conducive to the kind of high volume typing I'm used to!
I really don't want to pay 40 bucks to get Apple Support to replace a single key for me - I just need to know how to do it myself. It's only one key and I could probably learn to get used to using the right one, but it would be easier if I could just click it back into place. It's not broken, the mechanism itself seems fine and the key works if I push the little nubbin, so I'm not concerned about that. I just think $40 is too much to pay someone to click a key back into place! I wasn't even doing anything out of the ordinary with it like trying to remove or replace the keys T^T
I'm especially gutted since I just bought a new iPhone from the same Apple shop I bought my laptop like three days ago - if I'd known my laptop was gonna bust I'd have saved myself the money and spent it on repairs instead! Fml, right?
Any help you folks can offer would be very gratefully received - if it comes down to it and I have to fork out the money then I'll do so, but I'd like to explore community options first on the off chance that someone knows how to replace the mechanism and key without having to lug my computer all the way into the city to get it fixed xD
    Thanks in advance!

  • Replace keys, or keyboard?

I bought this MacBook Pro back in 03/04 can't remember which year exactly. But About a few years ago my return and shift key on the right side no longer work. I was hoping if someone could help me as to which would be my best option for fixing the problem. I've been trying to give ole' girl here some updates (OS system, and softwares) And I am hoping that the replacement keys would work. They haven't fallen off or anything. It's just they no longer function. I have not had any other problems with any of the other keys. I've managed to get this far luckily with the "spare" enter key next to the space bar thankfully.
    I hope someone can help

  • TS1381 My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).  I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, test all other keys with keyboard view (all others work)  - HELP!!

My left arrow does not work on my macbook pro(model A1226).
I have reset nvram, performed a safe boot, pulled the cache to desktop, replaced .globalpreference.plist, & tested all other keys with "keyboard viewer" (all other keys work except for the arrow).
In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker!  In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?
    thanks and regards
    vats3

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.
