How to replace a older Airport Extreme with a newer model? (OS 10.6 w/ Mac Mimi)

How do I replace a older Airport Extreme with a newer model? (Mac Mini OS 10.6.8 )

There is not much more to it than to buy a new one, and configure it using AirPort Utility.
You should be using AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
Power down your modem before removing your older Extreme and connecting the new one.

  • Can I replace an older Airport Extreme with a newer one by importing configuration file

Can I import the configuration file from an older Airport base station into a newer replacement Airport base station?  It would seem this would save me a lot of extra work.  First, it would hopefully save time by automatically configuring the new base station without me having to fiddle with the settings.  Second, it might hopefully save some more time if I would not have to re-enter the network parameters for all the devices currrently connected to my Airport (wi-fi) network.
    Read on for more details.
My old Apple Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is not a gigabit one.  Moreover, it's been experiencing some hardware failures recently.  So, I recently purchased a new Apple Airport Extreme (base station) that is a gigabit one (Model# ME918LL/A with 802.11ac Wi-FI).  Now, I'd like to replace the older base station with this newer one with the MINIMAL amount of disruption and manual work possible.
    Regards,
    Tony

I relaced an older AEBS with the new one, recently, and did not need to import anything, but if you can save the configuration file from your old one, then you can import it to the new one. I've never tried that when I switched, and it didn't seem to matter which suggests the configuration file may be on disk somewhere.

  • I want to replace one of my older Airport Extremes with the new model.  Any tips?

I have 2 older airport extreems that are connected by a network cable.  They share the same Netrwork ID.
I want to replace one of them with the new model as I want to use the old router on another project.
Any tips out there for a no-issue switch?
Should the newer and faster Extreme be connected  to the Modem or does it nt make a didfference?
    Thanks

use the new router as your primary router with the modem - this will be a factory  install from the default configuration -   as long as you use same network name password and type a password that you used for the express in bridge mode, you should be able to plug it in and have it work like before.  just make sure that you configure everything individually and then power all devices down and repower each one individually starting with the modem then the router in the express and that should work

  • Replace an older AirPort Extreme with a new one

My new AirPort Extreme arrives tomorrow. I would simply like to use it to replace my three year old unit leaving all the settings intact. The manual does not say how to do this but I have heard it can be easily done.
Do I just swap cables and turn the new one on?
    Thanks for your advice.
    Jay

Looks like you already resolved your issue so I'm sorry I didn't see your post in time.
For future reference, when replacing AirPorts the process is relatively simple. By default, the new AirPort will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN
As you found out, it is best to first connect the new base station to the one you will replace using an Ethernet connection between them. This greatly facilitates the initial setup and makes it easier for the AirPort Utility to find both devices the first time.
You would also find that the new base station would show up under the OS X menu bar's AirPort icon as a new device. Clicking on this you would find that the AirPort Utility should automatically start up and take you through a step-by-step to configure it. Including an option for replacing base stations.
    Enjoy your new "toy!"

  • I replaced an old airport extreme with a new one.  None of my wifi devices will connect - always say incorrect password.  Reinstalled old device, works fine.  Any ideas?

I have a 5 year old airport extreme.  I bought a new one to upgrade for better range.  I connected the new one to the internet with a few problems, but a phone call to my internet provider resolved them.  With an ethernet cable from the new airport extreme to my iMac, I'm connected.  However, none of my wifi devices will connect.  They see the network, but it either says "incorrect password" if I'm trying a new network name and password, or it repeatedly asks me to reenter the password if I use the old ones.  I reinstalled my old airport extreme and everything works fine.  I'm about ready to box up the new one and return it.  Any ideas?

It is extremely difficult to fix these issues.. remotely.
If none of your wifi devices work.. that does sound unusual..
Have another try.. This time deal with the COMPUTER only.. leave everything else turned off.
Unplug the Extreme from the router.. reset it to factory.. do this full setup.
Unplug power from the Extreme.. hold in the reset button.. plug in the extreme to power and keep holding in the reset.. 10sec or so the front led should flash rapidly.. release the reset and wait a couple of min.
Now in the computer does the Airport extreme show up under wifi as new device??
Please make sure IPv6 is set to link local only to go further but it should work no matter what the settings are.
No luck clear out all the old wireless names from the computer.. reboot the computer and try again to scan for new wireless devices.
Hold the reset and try again.. it must appear in the wifi to be setup.
No sign of it the unit is faulty and can be returned.

  • I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

I have replaced my airport extreme with a new airport time capsule and want to know how I can set up my extreme to extend/strengthen my Wi-Fi?

Start with a "hard reset" (see below) then use AirPort Utility to configure it.
When asked what you want to do with it, indicate that you want it to add to an existing network, similar to the following screenshot.
Follow the prompts that will eventually lead you to the words "wirelessly extend..." as shown.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network?

How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network?  I have an ISP provided wireless Router that has to remain as the base station.  I am able to join my 1/2TB Airport Extreme and Airport Express to the network, but I can't access/use Time Machine.

One option would be to connect the Time Capsule (TC) to the ISP-provided wireless router by Ethernet. You can then configure the for a roaming network. Then, depending on what your goal is for the AirPort Express, you can either: 1) Add it to roaming network, 2) Configure the TC & the Express for an "extended" network, or 3) Configure the Express to "join" the roaming network for AirPlay.

  • Replacing older airport extreme with time capsule

I am thinking of replacing my airport extreme with time capsule. I had a lot of problems setting up airport extreme a few years ago - now it is very reliable. I don't want to have the same issues with time capsule. Can I simply physically replace the airport extreme with time capsule using the same settings as previously
    Advice gratefully anticipated

Welcome to the discussion area, pancuronium!
You will use AirPort Utility on your Mac for this operation:
(Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the File menu at the upper left corner of the screen near the Apple icon
    Click Export Configuration File
Assign a name to the file and save it to a convenient location like the desktop
When you are ready to install the Time Capsule....
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the File Menu
    Select Import Configuration File
Navigate to locate the file that you exported to import all the settings into a new configuration for the Time Capsule

  • How do i connect my airport extreme with my airport express

how do i link my Airport Express with my Airport Extreme?

    Hello Bob -
I have an Apple Extreme (5th Gen) and I have tried to extend my network with an Apple Express Model No. A1264 with the ethernet connection.  It does not seem to work, and has crashed my network twice.  When I did get it to work, the wireless crawled.  When I took the AirPort Express off of the network the speed went back up.
Can this be done to extend the network, as I have the Extreme in the basement where the cable comes into the house, and I have two other floors that need wireless access.  Any suggestions for this older model AirPort Express?
    Thanks.

  • Configure an older airport extreme with an ipad1

I'm a complete noob regarding wireless. I bought an ipad1 and an older aiport extreme (the white round one) off of ebay and am not sure how to get it all up and running. My Mac Pro does not have a wifi card so I can't use that. I plan to connect the airport to my router via ethernet. I've read that you can't configure an airport extreme with the ipad. What do I need to do to set up the extreme so the ipad can see and use it?
    thanks

If the extreme is already configured, can I edit it using the app?
Sure, if AirPort Utility recognizes the AirPort Extreme. Otherwise, you have to perform a Factory Default Reset on the Extreme and start over from scratch
Open AirPort Utility, select the Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons to get to the wireless settings.
You want Wireless Mode set to "'Create a wireless network"
Wireless Network Name is your choice
Radio Mode = Automatic or 802.11b/g
    Channel =Automatic
    Wireless Security = WPA/WPA2 Personal
    Password = Your choice
    Confirm Password
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
    Update to save settings.

  • How do I use my airport extreme with my FIOS router?

How do I use my AirPort Extreme base station with my FIOS Router to extend my network?  I have hard disks connected to my AirPort Extreme and would lik to access them.

Probably can't answer all your questions - but.... I use a Linksys (wired and wireless) router as my primary entry point for FIOS. I use a Time Capsule and an Airport Express as a common wireless connection. So I have two visibile wireless networks and use them both depending on where I am in the house. Both the TC and AEx can be seen either wirelessly or wired from the entire network. Note - the Linksys provides all the DHCP - you set the apple routers as "bridge mode."

  • How to connect to dsl airport extreme with built in modem

    Hello everybody,
while we were tiding our cellar, i found an old airport extreme (a1034) with a built in modem, but i aint able to connect to my isp.
I looked throug the manual, but i didnt got answers there (maybe because of my poor english) . Is there a tutorial out there which tells me
how to connect to my isp?
    Regards Floh
PS: again sorry for my poor english

If you try to set up the new AirPort Extreme with AirPort Utility 5.6.1, you will receive a notice that you need a more up to date version of AirPort Utility.
Nevertheless, AP 5.6.1 will allow you to set up the basics....wireless network name, password, etc.
It will appear that you can change other settings that are not found in more recent versions of AirPort Utility, but if you go in and check using a newer version of AirPort Utility, you will find that the settings that you thought you had made have not "stuck".
For example, you want to change the Radio Mode on the new Extreme and not use the Automatic setting. AP 5.6.1 will appear to let you do this. But, if you check the setting using a more recent version of AirPort Utility you will see that the setting is still set at "Automatic".
So, the bottom line here is that unless the newer version of AirPort Utility has the specific setting that you want to change, you will not be able to make that change.
Is there ANY chance, to set up my new "towers" with more
options, than the current Airport Utilities do offer?
    Unfortunately, no.

  • Older Airport Extreme with new Airport Express

I have a new Airport Express and an older Airport Extreme (I think 1rst gen). I have been using the Extreme for a few years now and just got the express to help me extend the extreme. The Extreme's signal is very weak in some parts of my house. I cannot hook the two together via ethernet. Needs to be wireless. What's the best method? I only use the wi-fi for internet access and tv (netflix, HBOGO, etc). I do not share printers or hard drives. I'm wondering if the new express is better (range) than my older extreme? Should I use the express as my main base station?

Your Extreme should still provide better overall range over the 2nd gen 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station, so I would still recommend that you leave the Extreme as your "main" router.
You will want to use the following instructions to extend the wireless network from this Apple Support article.
The key to success if extending the Extreme is to place the Express within a 25+ dB SNR range of the Extreme as it can only repeat the signal with the same bandwidth that it receives it. If the signal is very weak the Express may not even be able to extend it at all.
Check out the following AirPort User tip for details on optimal base station placement. Please post back your results.

  • How do i use a 2nd airport extreme both are newer models

how do i use a 2nd airport extreme both are newer models

I assume that you mean that you want to extend the range using wireless only.
This Apple Support Document will tell you exactly how to do that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
The instructions assume that you have AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion , so if you have not already done so, you will need to download and install this application to track the instructions in the support document.
