How to replace huge decode statements with lookups to some simple code/key

I have a legacy PL/SQL application, composed of many very huge decode statements. And the most terribe one is that the guys who develops the application left the company now, leaves no documentation.
We are trying to read and understand those PL/SQL programs, and I'm asked to replace those huge decode statements with lookups to some simple code/key tables? But I have no idea about how to design such code/key tables. Is there any one who has similar experience may help me? Besides code/key tables, any idea will be welcome.

Not sure what your data looks like but sometimes decode can be replaced with more appropriate functions, ie;
SQL> with t as (
   select 'DAY' a, 30 b, null c, null d from dual union all

Help! format of decode statements with between or signs ?

Looking for an example of a decode statement with either a between/and or < > signs in the comparison field.
I have tried several variations, but none seem to work. Any help would be appreciated.
Here's a sample that doesn't work.
Select course_no, section_no, capacity, decode(capacity, (capacity < 12), Less than 12, (capacity between 13 and 15), 13-15, More than 15) from section;

Hi,
There is a limitation to the Case function, as it cannot be used in the PL/SQL (atleast upto Oracle 8i). Therefore, the only option left is Decode.
If you have to compare the values like capacity < 12 then display Less than 12. You can write it using combination of other functions.
For e.g. follow the steps below:-
1)If you deduct 12 from capacity : (capacity-12) [it will give result as +ve, 0 or -ve.]
2)If you have to narrow down the values to above three options, use function sign:
SIGN(capacity-12) [will result into +1, 0 or -1]
3)Then compare the values using Decode:
DECODE(SIGN(capacity-12),-1,Less than 12,Greater than or equal to 12)
The Decode can be used inside Decode(nested Decode) in above steps to compare more than one values (range between) to get the desired result. Hope have made it clear enough. If not, please let me know.

This statement stores the data objects specified in the list as a cluster in memory. If you do not use the option FROM <f i >, the data object <f i > is saved under its own name. If you use the FROM <g i > option, the data objet <g i > is saved under the name <f i >. The name <key> identifies the cluster in memory. It may be up to 32 characters long.
The EXPORT statement always completely overwrites the contents of any existing data cluster with the same name <key>.

To insert or change a single line in a database table, use the following:
MODIFY <target> FROM <wa> .
The contents of the work area <wa> are written to the database table <dbtab>. The work area <wa> must be a data object with at least the same length and alignment as the line structure of the database table. The data is placed in the database table according to the line structure of the table, and regardless of the structure of the work area. It is a good idea to define the work area with reference to the structure of the database table.
If the database table does not already contain a line with the same primary key as specified in the work area, a new line is inserted. If the database table does already contain a line with the same primary key as specified in the work area, the existing line is overwritten. SY-SUBRC is always set to 0.
A shortened form of the above statement is:
MODIFY <dbtab>.
In this case, the contents of the table work area <dbtab> are inserted into the database table with the same name. You must declare this table work area using the TABLES statement. In this case, it is not possible to specify the name of the database table dynamically. Table work areas with the same name as the database table (necessary before Release 4.0) should no longer be used for the sake of clarity.

How to replace typewriter (straight) apostrophe with typographic (curly) apostrophe?

I have a manuscript I got off the Internet that has a bunch of isn?t's and wasn?t's and the like—due, I assume, to some miscommunication between MS Word's automatic curly quotes and the ASCII limits of ISO Latin 1. I tried doing a find-and-replace to put typographic apostrophes in place of the question marks. Pages found the question marks and put typewriter apostrophes in place of them, though I'd carefully entered a typographical apostrophe ((opt-shift-]) in the Replace field. So I tried again, to replace the typewriter apostrophes with typographical apostrophes. Pages now replaced the few typographical apostrophes I'd manually entered with typewriter apostrophes. Well, at least it's consistent. So far as Pages, Apple's flagship word-processing/page-layout app is concerned, there's apparently no such thing as a typographical apostrophe—something that was understood, as I recall, by the original MacWrite 25 years ago. So do I have to go back to doing all my editing in TextEdit (which seems to be much better at text work than Pages), or can somebody tell me how to persuade Pages to take care of this trifling little task correctly?

Copy these two paragraphs into a Pages WP document:

Then enter Find: " (space-") and Replace: “ (space-opt-[), and click Replace All. It will say 1 Replaced, meaning the quote mark preceding "It" in the second sentence (the only quote mark preceded by a space). Enlarge the replacement to see it clearly; it's replaced an ASCII " with another ASCII ".
So far as I can tell, Pages’ Find-Replace function can't tell the difference between ASCII apostrophe/quote marks and the typographical versions. Maybe it will once you turn on smart quotes in preferences; I haven't tried that -- but then of course you'd get smart quotes when you don't want them, for instance for something to be posted on an Internet forum, which often doesn't understand them. (The problems above and similar, often seen on the 'Net, are due to MS Word's having smart quotes on by default, so unaware users compose material with them and send it out over teh Interwebz, where they sometimes come through correctly, sometimes don't.)
Try the same experiment in TextEdit; you'll get the requested typographical versions. And so I did, then copied the text back to Pages. Like I said, kinda shoddy for Apple's Pride & Joy word processor. AppleWorks, by the way, does it right.

Correlation Settings
Define which algorithm is to be used to create the message ID of a new XI message. The prerequisite for selecting an ID is that it is a GUID (globally unique identifier) according to ISO-11578.
If the message ID is not a GUID, message processing will fail. This can cause message duplicates if the ID is not unique. Furthermore, if the GUID does not conform to ISO-11578, this can trigger a GUIDFormatException.
Set XI Message ID (MessageID) To:
-         GUID (Recommended Value)
-         JMSMessageID (Uniqueness Is JMS-Provider-Dependent)
-         JMSCorrelationID (Uniqueness Is JMS-Sender-Dependent)
-         JMSProperty (Uniqueness Is JMS-Sender-Dependent)
Enter the JMS Property Name. This value is set for the XI message ID.
If the JMSCorrelationID or JMSProperty are not set in the JMS message, a message ID is generated automatically.
If you have selected JMSMessageID, JMSCorrelationID, or JMSProperty and entered a JMS message ID in these fields, you should see the Remove 'ID:' Marker from JMSMessageIDindicator. Set the indicator.

Now I have added in the view "where" clause two NOT EXISTS conditions based on one another different table respectively.
Before I added these two conditions the response time was fast ; but after I added these two conditions then the response time deteriorated.
So how to optimize the select statement ? Hints and so on ...

Pretty sure that you are only going to be able to do this via another application that allows you to have layers such as photoshop or gimp.

How to use a select statement with chinese characters?

I am currently developing a java servlet<using tomcat 4.x> which allows me to use select statement to retrieve results from the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. I am using a simple form to get the parameter for querying. The main problem i'm facing is that there are chinese information in the SQL database, but i can't retrieve it through the sql statement with the chinese characters input<thru the form with the help of NJ STAR>in the WHERE condition. When i execute the statement, it returns me no results even though the rows are present in the database.
Does anyone have the solution to using chinese words in the WHERE clause of the select statement to retrieve results with columns which contains chinese characters? Please help me. Thanks everyone. :)
PS: when i cut and paste those characters in the sql database and paste onto java.. it is ??? in questionmarks.. but when i paste them into excel 2000.. its shown as chinese chars again..

You need to set the character encoding set on your
statement and parameters for the characters to be
properly translated. Refer to the charsetName
parameter in the String class constructor in your API
docs and also to
$JDK_DOCS/guide/intl/encoding.doc.html in your JDK
documentation.
2000.. its shown as chinese chars again..Because Office programs are performing the same kind
of character translation with the appropriate MS APIs.

with the above servlet i created, i can search out the data in the database which i've inserted through the insert statement. I still can't search for things i've keyed into the database directly using NJStar..
