How to replace power button

I have a PPC mac mini and a matching La Cie HD which stacks on top. This serves as my home music station. BUT obviously we want all the cables out of sight and this means they all face to the back as does the power buttons for the mac and the HD. And this means I'm the only one in the house who can fiddle blindly round the back of both drives to turn them on. Even I am getting fed up trying to 'feel' for both of them, they are the same 'dimple' style.
What can I do to replace them with more visible and positive switches. I don't much care if they aren't aesthetically pleasing just that they are visible and positive, possibly even mounted on top of the stack with extended wiring if you get my drift.

Why not just sleep the Mac and wake it up with a mouse click or key stroke instead of shutting it down. Not only is it easier on the hardware than numerous cold boots, but you can start working enjoying it in seconds instead of minutes.
FWIW' I sleep my Mac's 24-7 and never fully shut down any of them unless I going to be away for several days.

  • Replacing Power button dual 1G MDD

The front panel power button on my Dual 1Ghz G4 MDD is getting "flaky". I have to push it a bit sideways and to the right for it to work. Any words of wisdom on how to replace the assembly and where to buy it? The local Apple store is only "allowed" to do trades. I bring them the bad assembly and leave it with them, then they will order me a replacement. That could take "a few weeks". When I pointed out the obvious (that I would then have a computer without a power switch) they obviously understood but couldn't do anything about "policy".
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi
Instructions for replacing the front panel board can be found here:
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g4mdd/g4mdd-fpb.pdf
Unfortunately it's a bit involved as the optical drive carrier and optical drive bezel have to be removed first.
I've never used them before, but the following is one company that seems to have the part for around $50:
    http://www.mac-pro.com
I'd double check the problem is with the front panel board and not the button itself in the bezel before you buy anything though. I guess it's possible it's just gunked up and needs a clean.

  • Out of Warranty Replacement - Power Button Not Working

Well this is fun.  A month and a half ago I paid the $229 to have an out-of-warranty replacement iPhone 4 shipped to me.  Now, the power button is malfunctioning on it.  When I press it, it does nothing, and at random times when I'm not even using the phone it'll prompt me wiht the "slide to power off" screen.  Do I have any options to fix this without paying Apple another absorbitent amount of money?
I don't have luck with iPhones, apparently.

Definitely call in to AppleCare (800-APL-CARE) and refer to the repair number if you happen to have it, otherwise simply give them the serial number and explain the situation.
It's very likely they'll want you to restore the phone, so you may consider doing that before calling.
I'd agree that it sounds like it's hardware, however the phone rep will decide how to troubleshoot appropriately.
You should be good though with the 90 day warranty.

    Hi,
According to a service manual, the touchpad is a part of the top cover. You have to replace whole top cover..
    Top cover part number: 496881-001

  • How to replace power adapter for PowerBook G4

I have a three year old powerbook G4 and the power adapter is toast (at least I think that's the problem). Doesn't charge and no illuminated ring around the connector to the computer.
Does anyone know how to replace this? Can't find it anywhere online or at Mac retailers.
    Thanks.

Replace the power adapter plug? Most folks won't bother, it's a hassle. The whole adapter is easily available from any Mac vendor. But before replacing anything, have you tried the following:
-reset the Power Management Unit (PMU)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
    -reset the PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
-unplug the power adapter from the wall socket for a while to reset.

  • How to unclock power button on HP2509m monitor

I can't unlock power button on HP2509m monitor.
    How to turn it off?

    Hello @kanin,
I understand that you are having issues unlocking and turning off your HP Pavilion 2509m LCD wide-screen monitor. I am providing you with some steps you can try below:
Step 1. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds
Step 2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the monitor and the wall
Step 3. Hold the power button down for at least one minute
Step 4. Plug the power cord back into the monitor and then into the wall outlet (not a power bar or surge protector)
Step 5. Press the Menu button on the monitor
Step 6. Navigate to the Factory Reset option and select it
Step 7. Try different cables between your computer and monitor.
If the above steps did not resolve your issue you can try the monitor on a computer or other device to see if the issue persists. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. • How to remap power button to stop sleeping?

I have a new macbook air, but I keep running into the issue of pressing the power button .
With the new OS system, I hit the thing, and it turns the computer to sleep. This wouldn't be as bad if
I press the power button over and over again to fight the thing to turn back on.
Anyone found a way to stop this? Annoying as ****.

I guess I wasn't clear. I am aware that you can still bring up the dialog box if you hold down the button. However, I wanted to get rid of the feature of pressing the power button, and having my computer turn to sleep mode.
It's irrelevant, and turning it back on from sleep mode becomes a major issue.

  • How to replace Power Supply in Pavilion 6535

    Hi,
I have an HP Pavilion 6535.  I want to replace the power supply.  I'm able to disconnect cables from the HDD, floppy and CDROM, but I don't know how to reach the cable connections to the motherboard and the fan cable.  They seem to be tucked behind the CDROM and inaccessible.
I think I can see the very top of the motherboard connector, but it seems like I'd need to go in blind and follow the wires with my fingers to be able to get to the connectors and disconnect them.  This method doesn't seem like a good approach, so I haven't tried it yet.
It makes me think I'm missing something and that there must be another opening that makes the motherboard more easily accessed.
I don't have any experience fixing PCs, but the basic instructions for replacing a power supply seem so simple that I thought I could do it (see http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph05729&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=59370).
Am I mistaken and should go to a repair shop or are there instructions somewhere that make it clear how to reach the 6535's motherboard/fan connectors?  (I've searched the web unsuccessfully for such instructions.)
    Thanks for any help.

If there is something in the way remove the screws that hold the item that is in the way, write down how you do it or take photos, then reverse the procedure when you put it back together.
The CD ROM will probably have a couple of screws in the sides, remove them and it will slide out of the way, trained monkeys can build these, so work backwards.

  • How to Replace Power Supply

I'm stuck with what I thought was going to be an easy job - compared to a G5 tower or an iMac.
I need to replace the power supply in my Mac Pro (2008) but I'm stuck at getting the small cover off. I've removed the metal plate that was under the optical drives (POV when looking through the side). But it seems there's a small cover for the power supply that's similar to the big processor cover for the liquid cooled G5 towers. I can't figure out how to remove that.
Does anyone have a link to a manual or take-apart guide for the Mac Pro?
    Thanks!

Before you begin, open the computer, lay it on its side with the access side facing up, and remove
    the following:
    • Hard drives and hard drive carriers in drive bays 3 and 4
    • Optical drive carrier and optical drives
    • Any PCI Express cards that block access to the power supply mounting screws
    1. Using a short-handled, magnetized 2.5 mm hex screwdriver, remove the four power supply
mounting screws from the bottom of the media shelf.
    2. Depress the upper right corner of the power supply and slide the power supply toward the
    front of the computer.
    3. Lift the power supply a short distance and rest it on the edge of the enclosure.
    4. Starting with the top connector and working down, disconnect the four connectors on the
power supply cable from the four connectors on the power harness cable. Note: You must release the locking latch on each power supply cable connector before detaching the connector.
    5. Remove the power supply from the enclosure.
    Replacing the Power Supply:
    1. Rest the power supply on the edge of the enclosure so that its cable can reach the media
shelf divider. Note: The following four steps explain how to reconnect the power supply cable connectors with the power harness connectors. When the power harness connectors are in their original position in the media shelf divider, it is not possible to see where they mate with the power
supply cable connectors. Therefore, the next step shows how to temporarily remove the power harness connectors from the divider for a better line of sight.
    2. Starting with the top connector and working down, release the four power harness cable
connectors from their openings in the media shelf divider. Note: Each connector has two locking latches that hold it to the divider. To release the connector, depress the bottom latch first and then the top latch. You may find a flat-blade screwdriver useful in depressing the latches.
    3. Placing a hand on either side of the media shelf divider, thread the J1 connector on the power supply cable through the top connector opening in the media shelf divider and connect it to the PS1 connector on the power harness. Repeat for the other three power supply cable connectors.
    4. Important: The first three connectors on the power supply cable are marked J1, J2, and J3; the fourth connector is not marked. The four connectors on the power harness cable are marked PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4. You must connect J1 to PS1, J2 to PS2, etc.
    5. Starting at the bottom connector and working up, depress the locking latches on each power harness connector and reinsert it into its opening in the media shelf divider. Important: Test that all power supply cable connectors and power harness connectors are fully seated by tugging on the cables on both sides of each of the four paired connectors.
    6. Fold the power supply cable on the bottom of the power supply bay.
7.Lift the power supply and holding the power supply at an angle, llower it into the enclosure until its
upper right corner slides under the corner lip of the enclosure.
    8. Slide the power supply toward the back of the computer as far as possible.
    9. Make sure the power receptacle aligns with the opening in the enclosure’s back panel and
the four screw holes in the power supply align with the screw holes in the media shelf.
    10. Replace the four power supply mounting screws.

  • HT4972 how to press power button for iphone

    I can"t open iphone

Like any other button, you place a finger on it and press.
What does this have to do with "opening" an iPhone?  By that do you mean getting past the lock screen?  Carrier unlocking the device? Or did you possibly mean physically opening the device (i.e. opening the case)?
What does this have to do with iPhones in the Enterprise, the forum to which you posted this cryptic question?

  • Iphone 5 power button not working!! They have replacement program for months but why they dont email you and say it??

I have had iphone 5 and have never been happy and i think apple is not leading the technology and future of market anymore as they are lowering quality of their products(even hardware). I had to change first iphone 5 i had because of wireless issues and then i had battery problem  and had to charge 3 times a day and finally after 2 years i bought they decided that its faulty and they decide to change it. Luckily enough i read it on an online tech magazine and after googling i see that they have had replacement for power button as well which i am eligible for as well!! i go to genius bar and they replace battery but they dont replace power button cause they examine it and passes till the audio dock test! It connects to charder dock or cable but it doest to audio test dock and he says one off the pins inside is not right but it charges perfectly with every cable in the store!! And i tell him that they have to change power button not the charging pin cause it doesnt make sense!! Its a faulty product and maybe if they emailed and said it nearly a year ago my pin was right then!!  so i think they found a silly reason not to change it and so i am struggling with that phone and brand  that i hate(once i used to love)!

  • 3 day old iMac power button spongy.

    Hi all!
I noticed this on day one, but it wasn't until I got to another iMac to try the power button that I noticed just how spongy the power button was on my new iMac.  At £1,700 I would expect every aspect of the machine to be perfect!
Anyway, I think it would need to go back to the store to be replaced/fixed.  I've invested a LOT of time into setting everything up over the last few days.  My question is, if I got a replacement iMac would this all need to be done again?
    Thanks!
    Mark

I'm new to OSX, and was wondering if they could migrate everything to a new mac and I'd have that one, so that's why I would "expect"/anticipate otherwise.
Thank you for the clarification. No, they won't do that.
There are many ways of implementing a power button, and it's likely that yours is working exactly as it should. Apple sources their parts from a variety of vendors and not all power buttons have the exact same tactile feedback. If you think something is not right, by all means have them evaluate it.
