How to replace RAM on new late 2008 Aluminum 13" MacBook

It's in the user guide. Page 42 (WARNING: PDF!):
http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacBook_13inch_AluminumLate2008.pdf
It looks slightly more involved then the previous model.

Apple will upgrade the memory for you, or you can do it yourself as shown here by Apple: MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory.
If you have Apple do it it will be more expensive, but will be easier and the memory will be guaranteed compatible. Doing it yourself is not hard, but can be a bit fiddly.
All this assumes that you have the 13" MacBook Pro and not the 13" MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Retina models have the RAM built in directly to the motherboard and are not upgradeable.

  • Compatible SSD that can run 3 Gbps (Sata 2) speed - Macbook 5.1 Late 2008 Aluminum

I've read on several forums most of the SSD drives run negotiate 1.5 Gbps speed on Macbook 5.1 Late 2008 Aluminum (Not macbook pro) .
Can you recommend a drive currently on the market 120-256 GB range that can run at negotiated 3 Gbps speed ?

I will keep it as last solution because this model is now sold more expensive than 840 . 300 USD for 240Gb version on amazon. Very expensive

  • Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro (15in 2.4GHz) using 8GB of RAM

    Hi everyone,
I have a quick question to ask, What I'd like to know is why the Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro motherboard has a chipset (Nvidia) that can support up to 8GB of RAM but Apple are stating that the system can do only 4GB?
According to NVidia, The motherboard is fully capable of using 8GB of RAM but has been limited to 4GB by Apple and that this can be resolved by a simple EFI update.
The links below show a well known Apple parts dealer running tests on the system using 8GB RAM and claims that the OS X can read it perfectly but the programs will not use more then 4GB of the RAM.
I really don't understand why Apple would limit the system to use only 4GB of RAM and if Apple have any plans on releasing an EFI update.
    Thanks for reading guys

Economics 101: So if you want 8GB, you have to go buy a new MBP and pay another grand for the memory. After all, they are in the hardware business, right?

  • Replacement keys for MacBook Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody

Is there any way to order replacement keys for the Late 2008 MacBook Aluminum Unibody model?
I ordered and received a new Enter and Shift key from numerous Apple retailers, but they do not fit properly. They only fit and snap correctly on the MacBook PRO Aluminum models.

Make an appointment at your local Genius Bar. I had a bad key a few months ago and it took all of 30 seconds for them to run to the back and replace it.

  • Cover/Case for 13" Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook?

I have a 13" late 2008 aluminum MacBook and am trying to find a cover/case (preferably the hard shell) that will fit it. I read that they are no longer made for this model so it will be hard to find. The websites I found that offer cases for this model were not able to say that it would be a guaranteed fit. After seeing so many reviews about how they don't fit this model, I am hoping that someone on here could direct me to a website that sells ones that will for sure fit.

    Go to OWC's site,
You'll see the selections on that page. Great company. No hassle returns and great support.

  • 320GB really the max upgrade for MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum Uni)?

So, I've got my MacBook. It's the 13.3" aluminum unibody, from late 2008. Everything in it is stock, except I've upped the memory from 2GB to 4GB. The harddrive is still the original 250GB, which is pretty much full. I've been told by Apple that the highest capacity I can put into this one is 320GB, yet I see tons of posts from people who have put 500GB/1TB drives in and was wondering how THEY can do it, but I can't.
    Any suggestions/advice?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    It's listed as a MacBook. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1651#link2
As you can see, Apple officially supports 4 GB of memory in the Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook, but you can install 8 GB of memory without any problem. You can buy the memory in OWC or Crucial > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3

Can I install iDVD (only) from an iLife 11 CD on a new (late 2011) on-line MacBook Pro/Lion purchase that no longer included it?

Purchasing iLife 11 on disk is an easy thing to do. ILife 11 will include iDVD.
If you have iDVD on another Macintosh you can transfer it to your new computer. That procedure has been discussed here many times, if you do a search you will find that procedure.

  • Edge RAM fails on late 2008 MBP Unibody

I recently decided to upgrade my late 2008 unibody MBP (2.53 GHz) by adding a 7200 RPM drive and bringing the RAM up to 6 GB, the total this machine will hold. The drive upgrade went fine, but the Edge RAM kept throwing kernel panics. I finally put back the original 2 GB stick and everything returned to normal.
I don't actually think there is anything defective about the Edge stick, I just think it's just not compatible with this computer even though it is labeled that it should work. I'd like to know if anyone has successfully upgraded the RAM on their 2008 MBP that's the same model as mine (see above) and if so, what they used.
    In advance, thanks!

Some people here will tell you to buy only "X" brand, but actual reliability studies have shown that it doesn't really make that much difference. The failure rates are pretty much the same regardless of manufacturer. It's OK to shop for price rather than paying higher prices for a so-called well known brand. The key is to buy from a vendor you know is reliable and provides a reasonable return policy in case you get a bad piece. It happens. And only buy a product with a lifetime warranty. Stay away from so-called "economy" RAM that only has a 90-day warranty.
Macs are not that finicky in my experience. I've bought lots of different kinds of RAM for more than a couple dozen Macs. I've never had a problem. But sometimes problems do arise. You get a marginal module that won't pass the system's POST test.
If you want a reliable source I recommend Data Mem. I've dealt with them for 20 years. I've no complaints. I always buy computers with a minimum RAM configuration and do my own upgrading. Thus far I've upgraded the RAM in seven Intel Macs without incident, and I've never bought "brand" RAM. But then that's me. If you prefer the "brand" crowd they usually recommend Crucial. Apple mostly uses Samsung in the new computers. And there's Hynix which is also a big brand manufacturer like Samsung. But the big memory manufacturers also sell unbranded RAM or RAM that is OEM branded.

  • Replacement hard drive for late 2008 Macbook Pro

I need to replace my drive in a late 2008 Macbook Pro 15".  I can access the battery and what looks like the hard drive from the underside, if this helps.  Would this be a good replacement choice?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279
Finding exact specs for the drive has been tricky, or maybe I just need to have the physical size verified.  What I know/have found is:
5400rpm       (would a 7200rpm improve performance, or am I limited by hardware?)
SATA II        (does this matter tese days?)
    2.5" drive   (needs verification)
open drive?  (do I need this or not?)
Any other options or advice?  I'd like to spend a small amount since this is an older computer and won't be around a whole lot longer anyway.  Thanks in advance!

The link you posted above is for a WD drive,....dont get it.   WD drives (some) have SMS sensor coflicts with Mac, and the consumer grade western digital HD are the worst you can buy.

  • Can I upgrade from 4gb of ram to 8 gb of ram on my late 2008 macbook pro?

I think I am in the right forum. I have the previous version of the macbook pro. Not the unibody.
    I read this...
    http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2008/07/05/testing-my-apple-macbook- pro-with-8gb-of-ram.aspx
    Any thoughts?
    thanks,
    C

You are in the wrong forum; this one is devoted to the unibody models that were introduced in late 2008. Yours is not a late-2008 model unless it's the 17" model that was minimally refreshed in October 2008. Be that as it may, you want one of the "original" MBP forums that are listed at the top of this page:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=250
The long-established unofficial (non-Apple) word on the actual RAM capacity of your machine is that it can use 6GB without problems, but will almost certainly be inoperable or unreliable with 8GB installed. As far as Apple is concerned, it only supports 4GB.

  • Using MBP Late 2011 old RAM on MBP Late 2008

    Hello,
I have two MacBook Pro, one Late 2008 (Model 5,1) and one Late 2011 (Model 8,2).
I know that the 5,1 can run up to 2x4GB 1066 RAM, but I'm wondering if i can use the 2x4GB 1333 RAM that came with my Built-to-order 8,2.
So, will the 5,1 force the 1333 DIMM to run as 1066? Or it's just not possible?
Also, if it is possible, will the 5,1 be under any restriction (such as running only OS X 10.6.6 or later, or something like that)?
    Thank you!

You have to use DDR3 1066 DIMMs.

  • My Late 2008 Aluminum MacBook keeps crashing on new OS X 10.8.1

I recently upgraded my Late 2008 Macbook to Mountain lion. Since doing so, my computer is running really slow and constantly crashes. I cant have more than two programs running at the same time, otherwise the computer will freeze up and i get the "rainbow pinwheel of Death". I also experience issues with my internet crashing as well as quicktime player issues.
Please help me if you can. I am Seriusly thinking about finding a way to go back to lion, cause i never had an issue before!

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t run Mountain Lion. There's a Mountain Lion Support Community where everybody has Mountain Lion. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mountain_lion
