If you still have a use for it it's definately worth it. You can upgrade the ram to a maximum of 6GB and run the current Yosemite OS. To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then partition and format the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one.

HT1366 how to replace the hard drive?

This is my first posting on this site, so pardon me if I am not aware of protocol or procedure. My daughter gave me a MacBook notebook that apparently was water damaged and ceased to operate thinking I might be able to get it operating again (she has since replaced it with a more current Mac). I removed the back case (8 screws) and was surprised to see a sparkling clean interior with no apparent damage of any kind. I have worked on many water damaged PCs before, and was expecting the usual evidence of water damage like rusted components and connections. But this unit was as clean and corrosion free as a whistle!
However, what did surprise me was a missing hard drive, or I should say that I was not able to find a hard drive. Rather, there was a square shaped hole and a multi-pinned connector where a hard drive would logically be found. This hole or mount location is right beside the battery at the right side bottom of the interior of the notebook. The DDR memory modules are located immediately above the hole. I have been looking for a schematic layout of the MacBook but haven't found it yet.
I understand the MacBook could be ordered with three different capacity hard drives, and therefore I should be able to find one for sale at a Mac dealer or repair facility.
I did not receive any of the other equipment that was originally supplied with the unit such as the power cord and/or charger. I would also need to install the appropriate operating system.
I would appreciate any input or assistance getting this unit back to operational condition. I am on a disability pension, and bucks are tight, so any cost saving suggestions would also be helpful.

How to replace the hard drive in a G500 notebook

I have been trying to install openSUSE 12.3 Linux on my new G500 and have been unable to do it. I think that there is a problem with the hard drive so I want to replace it. I have worked on other notebooks and they all have screws on the base that let you get to the memory and the hard drive. The G500 does not. How does it come apart?

You will have to remove the retaining screws from the battery compartment
After that you should slide the cover towards the front of the laptop.
Note: Be careful on removing and replacing parts, any physical or cosmetic damage won't be covered.

Can I swap the hard drive from MacBook Pro 17 (2009) to MacBook Pro 15 (2006)?

My MacBook Pro 17 (2009) died. Pushing the power button gets no response. I had had problems with it for some time turning it on, it usually taking many many tries. Plus when I'd try to do a restart after updating software, instead of doing so it'd shut off super quick with a *pop* sound. There was never any of the typical hard drive going bad sounds I've read about and seen in videos. Since it has refused to turn on I've gone through every suggestion I can find to get it to turn back on. Unhook the battery and try starting from just the power cord; the shorting the power pads move; some thing undoing the battery, counting to 10, and then the next steps now escape my memory, but doing more counting to 10 inbetween; unplugging the battery and leaving it sit for 2 days with no power cord plugged in either, then hook it to a power cord and turn it back on; and so many more.
Also the symptoms just before this fiasco were as follows: I had a CD in the internal drive and was browsing through the images on it via the handy previewer using the space bar. Then I decided to quite, tried ejecting the CD by dragging the icon to the trash, and nothing. I tried again. The same. Then I pushed on the eject key, with the ejct icon popping up on the screen momentarily, but still nothing. Then it appreared as though some things worked and other things were not working. In my frustration I went to the Apple menu and clicked restart with a wince knowing it was going to take forever to turn back on. It did the usual quickly off with a *pop* and made super short lame attempts to turn back on when using the power button. Of course the CD kept trying to spin for a split second and then the little indicator light on the front would go out, then no noise at all.
Since I do not believe it is the hard drive (of course I could be wrong not being a Mac nerd at all), I was wondering if I can switch the hard drive to my Macbook Pro 15 (2006)?
I tried this, but it would not read the hard drive. Just a blank grey screen. If it is possible to do this swap, what are the exact steps to do? Please answer like I'm completely illiterate on this, because I really am. I'm super scared of losing everything on the dead MacBook's hard drive. Yeah yeah, I know: then why have I not been backing things up? I had the week prior. Believe me I WILL be doing it daily from now on if I get this mess straightened out!

OGELTHORPE really sorry to keep bugging you, but it's obvious you know what you are talking about and I'm stuck on thin ice here getting this fixed, because there are no authorized Apple reps here. I would rather shoot myself for messing up, then to trust someone who "says" they can fix my Mac down here.
I checked out a company owned by ebay that is the same down here, called MercadoLibre. There are quite a few adapters listed there. These are all cost effective enough that I don't care the price - cheap, expensive - whichever will work the BEST!
I've also looked for the 7200 rpm HDD, and although I found some, I'll be danged if they are not 3.0, instead of the 2.5 that I have. Grrrr! I was willing to spend the $90 for 1tb... or being the non-techie that I am, can this 3.0 go into my 2006 MBP??

Another newbie question: How do I check what the amount if RAM is presently installed in it? (I might be a greenhorn, but I take pride in not being a dumbie and I learn when taught)
Right now, I'm willing to spend almost anything. I want a few files that are on the HDD at the moment that I was stupid and did not backup on my external. One file I worked on all day due to the dimensions I had to design it at and each effect took a long time to render. I really don't want to do that one again!.. I'm also willing to spend anything that won't cost me the price of a new iMac. Figure that should be the next one I buy that is affordable, but won't be overworked like the MBP was.

How to support two hard drives on macbook pro

I have a 2012 13" Macbook Pro with a 750GB HD and i have a bootcamp partion on it.
I want to put an SSD HD (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-7PD256BW) but i also wanto to keep my old HD and so i bought a caddy to replace the optical drive and use the SSD as the main HD and the old HD as a secondary HD.
Can i still keep my bootcamp partion on the old HD and just remove the OS from it and set it up on the SSD?

No, the Boot Camp partition MUST stay on the boot drive - in your case the SSD.
Very wise of you, however, to put the SSD in the HD bay instead of the optibay. That's where your Mac 'expects' to find the boot drive and where it should be installed: doing otherwise can cause problems with your system.

How to replace the hard drive on a Powerbook?

The 80 GB Toshiba HD on my Powerbook G4 17 inch recently failed. Apple informs me that the flat rate to replace the drive out of warranty is over $900. I can't see shelling out that much for a new drive on a two year old PB. I'd like to think I could do this myself. Are there instructions anywhere or do I just go about this in a logical, careful, methodical way - labeling screws and photographing progress, etc.?

See chapter 5 and 6. You may have to remove up to 83 screws. Get yourself a tray or paper and lay out how and where the screws go in. An alternative is to take digital photos at each steps.

Using time Capsule to replace new hard drive on MacBook Pro?

I am replacing the internal hard drive on my MacBook pro (early 2008). I have a time capsule that I would like to use to restore the entire back-up on the time capsule to the new hard drive. What is the procedure to do this? Thanks.

First, prep the new drive:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Second, install Snow Leopard on the new drive.
Third, after Snow Leopard starts for the first time you will be in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration you will be presented with the options for continuing or restoring from a TM backup or another Mac. Select the TM option and restore your data.

How to install new hard drive on Macbook Pro

My hard drive failed and I am no longer able to boot up the Macbook. If I go and buy a new hard drive and replace it with the broken one, what will happen when I turn it on. It will be a brand new drive with nothing on it. Will it automatically start installing OS X on it or do I need anything else?

It'll display a blinking question mark and/or automatically start from Apple's servers. What needs to be done depends on the computer's model.
If it originally shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, insert a compatible install DVD and press the C key.
If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer or was upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, press the Option, Command, and R keys if needed.
Install the OS.

On the left side of the window that opens up will be a section near the top under Hardware that says Memory.
There will be a section inside memory that says Memory Slots: Can you copy that?

How do I authorise my Imac for Itunes after replacing the hard drive?

Apologies, but I am new to forums and understand that the issue of "Authorisation" of Itunes purchases and rentals has been done to death! However, I have tried everything and have exhausted normal research on the Net, there doesnt seem to be standard sollution to my problem. I have replaced the Hard Drive in my Imac 2008 with an SSD which makes the Imac very fast and effcient and completely clean of the usual trash in an old computer. So before renting my first movie, I did the following:..................................
Formatted the hard drive and downloaded and upgraded to OSX to 10.5.8 (the latest I can go on this Imac (I think) Intel 3.06Ghz 2 core and 4GB SSDRAM)
Upgraded Itunes to the latest available
Upgraded Quicktime to the latest available.
I rented a film which will not play and initially I got the "not authorised on this computer" message which kept repeating despite saying it was "waiting"
So I did the usual apple support search and tried the following:..................................
I checked that my apple User ID and password where up to date and that I was purchasing on the right ID
Tried the standard.....Itunes/Store/Authorise this computer - tried unauthorising and then re-authorising No luck
I tried deleting the (/Users/Shared/SC info) file No luck
I tried the Terminal based solution "sumo chmod -R 777 /Shared/Users" fix It didnt work either
I don't get the authorisation warning any more but just get a black screen with a grey horizontal stripe across the middle
I would be very grateful if somene could give me another sollution to try............................

Problem replacing the hard drive

I was following the instructions on how to replace the hard drive on the pdf on the apple website, but after I finished, I took a look at other websites and saw that I was supposed to use a torx screwdriver to remove that metal outer bracket on the built-in drive ( see video on http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html ). i didn't do this.. i took a look at my hard drive again, and it seems that I can't really remove my new hard drive without the bracket/pulltab that the original had.
Is this a problem? It looks to me like my new hard drive is stuck in my computer for life. Not a problem right now, since it's running perfectly fine, but is there anything I should do about this?

Well it's not necessarily a good thing. I wouldn't say it horrible either. That's the whole idea of the bracket. It gives you the pull tab and also mounts the drive into the opening solidly. Without it it can "bang around" in the opening. You might be able to take something (like a couple of popsicle stick) and slide them down on each side of the drive and wiggle them enough to remove the drive. If you don't feel comfortable doing so DON'T. Or if you try and it's not working I'd take it to the Apple Store or repair center and have them do it. You really do need the bracket. You may get lucky and someone will take pity on you and get it out without paying.
I think the Apple PDF is incomplete at best and at worst shouldn't even be posted if it's not going to give you the FULL steps to do the job correctly.
