How to replicate this vector hair style.

Hey everyone,
I've been trying for over a week to replicate how Tyler Stout illustrates hair.
I've gotten close by making shapes with thicker strokes on them, but it still doesn't get close enough.
I'm specifically wondering how he creates the individual strands of hair, while also having the black shading in between
and at the base of the strands.

Well, I'd say he does it mostly by putting in hours of hard work. As for specific methods, of course you or I would have to watch him do it to really know. But looking at the example you posted, I believe there is no black shading or strokes. It looks to me like there is an underlying layer of black making up the overall hair shape, and all the highlight/mid-light color is comprised of un-stroked shapes layered on top off that (or perhaps they are stokes...like calligraphic ones). I think another key element of the look is that it's somewhat exaggerated. You couldn't make someone's real hair go in that many different directions if it was your life's work, but that artistic boldness is what makes it so deep and visually rich.

im having a problem in replicating data,,we have a central server and 3 other servers,,there is one table AA containing (a number, b number, c varchar2(10)) on central server,,on other 3 servers the table AA is (b number, c varchar2(10)) ,,now i want to replicate data of AA table of these 3 servers on to the central server's AA table,,what are the possible ways to do it?
the a column in AA table at central server is an id distinguishing the 3 different sites.

You can probably get away with simple materialized view replication from the remote sites. On the central server, you would create a materialized view

In both Word and Pages: In a block of text, when you place the cursor anywhere in a line and drag down, you automatically select all of the following text up until your exit point. That's fine, until you want to select just a specific vertical portion of a block of text, e.g., if you had a set of text items listed in tabbed columns, and you wanted to select only the third column from top to bottom. In Word, you do this by Option dragging down the list. It selects only the text included in the drag. So far I haven't figured out how to replicate this in Pages '08.

You can't.
So you have to find a solution.
Convert the tabbed text to a table.
Select the column(s)/row(s) and copy.
Do Cmd-Z to undo making the table.
Paste your column(s)/row(s) somewhere and convert that table to text.

How to save a vector art(for example, a circle) in a plugins?

If they need a vector object. Photoshop is not really the right program. Illustrator would be a better choice.
In Photoshop the only formats that support vector are psd, pdf, and ai.
Psd and pdf would create vector objects that would be more beneficial to someone using Photoshop.
The ai format is the only true vector format that others can use. However it only exports paths and therefore can only be found in the paths panel. The issue is Photoshop does not apply a stroke or a fill to that path. If someone is not aware of that, they would think the document is blank.
This file would have to be opened in illustrator and give the path a fill or stroke then save it.
The reason pdf does not work as expected is the format supports both raster and vector objects. The creator of the file has to be very careful to use vector objects only. If you load the file into illustrator there is the possibility that it will not open. When illustrator saves a pdf it can embed an ai file into the pdf so it can open it. Photoshop can embed a psd file into a pdf but not an ai file. Illustrator requires the embedded ai in order to open the file.
This is a long drawn out way to say Photoshop is not the right program, but it helps to understand why.

File>Open to open your eps file
File>Export to export your image as a jpg.
In the export dialog box just below where you type in the filename is a file type, that is where you choose jpg.
What ever you do, do not delete the eps file. Should you ever need to access the original you will have have.
I recommend that instead of jpg you choose psd, tiff, or png and use jpg only for sharing. Jpg is a lossy format meaning each time you edit the file and save it, the quality of that file degrades. The formats I recommend are lossless formats, you can edit them all you want no data is being discarded unless you choose to do so.

Trial and error, putting both the reference image and your new experimental image up side by side, is the only way I know. I'd probably use the Info panel as well, to see that I'm getting the same or very similar color numbers from the new drop shadow.
You can probably use the Magic Wand set to a very low tolerance value to select and copy the light colored object, then make a new document with a white background, paste in the copied object, then start experimenting with drop shadow. Alternatively you could just redraw a portion of it.

Yep you can. CSS HTML Only menu option, Menu Module V2, CSS and a bit of javascript or CSS3 for the animation.

How can I replicate this analog TV warping effect on text?

I've tried using the puppet warp, but creating additional points seems to give the curves unnatural "kinks" that don't match up with the effect I'm trying to achieve.
I'm also seeing a sort of duplicating effect that's happening, with a second "blackout" that's kind of emerging from the top, but I'm less worried about that. Just wondering how to get this kind of warping. Can anyone help?

It's doable, but needs a bit of user input.
Stretching the text without blocking up the cross-bars at the top and bottom is the first problem, but you can get round that with Content Aware Scale.
Lay down the text and Rasterize.
Drag rectangular selections across the bottom and top of the text and save the selection. (I should probably dragged a third selection round the 'B' cross-bar.)
Select all > Content Aware Scale > Protect in the Options bar, and choose the selection you saved. Stretch the text.
Now just distort with Liquify adjusting brush size and pressure to suit. (I did try other options, but Liquify was the only one that did not soften the edges.
Fairly close to your original I'd say.

This appears to be a subject that's been masked from multiple different shots and overlaid on a single background. You can do this with layers, and masking/transparency.

If I select the text layer and click the text style button in the library it just creates a new text style for Myriad Pro 12pt - I'm not using that anywhere in my document.
Can anyone help? Seems like a bug to me as I'm trying what the video tutorials are saying.

Do you realize it is an object-based vector-based program? Do you know the difference between raster-based and vector-based content?
My question seems to be all over the forum but no one has been able to answer other than exporting to these file formats, which make text look awful and of no use....
And yet everyone else in the world makes proper web images every day using a plethora of programs, including these...go figure.

Hello, cocteau! What you're calling "transparency" is inherent to object-based vector artwork. But web browsers don't support object-based vector artwork, except via file formats like Flash and SVG, or by viewing as a PDF in a plug-in version of Reader. Raster imaging in general only supports "transparency" by either indexing a specific color (i.e.; "don't display this color", as in GIF) or including an alpha channel (i.e.; "blend all the pixels with existing pixels, based on values from this extra channel", as in PNG). It's all in the raster file format you use, cocteau; it has little-to-nothing to do specifically with Adobe software. Such things are among the most basic matters understood by someone doing web design.
When I export an eps from .ai file, and open the eps in photoshop,...I save as a gif for the web, it goes back to the original problem...creates jagged text. I"m giving up on this garbage...Thanks a lot adobe! Lower the price of this software if this is all that can be done.
Once it leaves Photoshop (or Illustrator, or whatever) as a non-proprietary raster image format, it's all about what the format can do re "transparency". You can do this stuff with most any graphics program. You should read about basic web design and the differences between raster and vector content, rather than rant.

Cool CSS3 form styling select - can I replicate this in buttons?

I stumbled across a very nice looking CSS styling for select input forms using the following CSS definitions:

Just create a little select form referencing these classes - it's looks GREAT! I have tried without success to apply this style behavior to both "submit" and "button" inputs. Any suggestions to replicate this styling in buttons? I am by no means an expert in CSS styling so I may be missing something rather obvious.
FYI - this effect works nicely in both Safari and the Chrome/Mac browsers. SOL when it comes to FF/IE/Opera/Camino - I've tried. It looks like these effects are tied to the Webkit rendering engine.

How do I use multiple paragraph styles in one line?

I'm working on my thesis in APA style. I'm creating a Table of Contents with the help of Pages. When you get to Level 3 in APA headings (no problems with Levels 1 and 2) it needs to look like this:
[0.5in Indent] Masculinities in higher education. For men, the college experience.... (paragraph starts on same line as the heading).
I created a paragraph style for the (bolded) heading above [Heading 3]. When I do this, like magic the heading shows up in the table of contents (yeah!). However when I do this the rest of the paragraph shows up too (boo!). When I highlight to change the just rest of the paragraph (not the heading) to the style "Body" it changes the heading too and removes it from the table of contents. How can I make 2 paragraph styles work together in the same paragraph so I can use the tale of contents tool?? Surly there is a work-around.

As the name implies, paragraph styles are not intended to be used on a unit smaller than a paragraph. Therefore if you want the TOC to be automatically generated then you need to have distinct paragraphs... as you specify the APA style with the content and heading continuous then you will have to manually create the TOC.

How to change the default text style?

The MacOS system seems to maintain a collection of text 'styles' available in applications such as TextEdit, Bean, MacJournal, Notebook and DevonThink. This collection contains a default style, used by some (but not all) of these applications as the default text style for new documents.
At my computers this default style is characterized in the 'favorite styles' panel as 'left aligned, spacing 0.0x' and it has strange tab stops (0.99, 1.98, 2.96, 3.95, 4.94, 5.93, 6.91, 7.90, 8.89, 9.89, 10.86, 11.85 cm).
I prefer tab stops at 1.00, 2.00, 3.00 etc., and 1.2x line spacing.
I guess I have changed the default style by accident, as I cannot imagine Apple putting such strange tab stops in a default style (0.0x spacing sounds a bit strange too). If so, it must somehow be possible to change the default style.
I have tried to change the default style via TextEdit (which does not use the default style as default, but spacing 1.0x and tab stop at each centimeter) and several other applications (Bean, MacJournal, Notebook) in the following way: select a piece of text with the intended format, open the document styles panel, click 'Add to Favorites', enter 'Default' as the name for the style and click 'Replace'. Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Although I do not get an error message, the Default style hasn't changed. I can save my preferred style as, for example, 'Preferred' but that does not prevent MacJournal and other applications from using Default for every new document.
Any idea how to change this default style, or, if that is not possible, reset it to its original state?

It won't help you in defining styles, as such, but will give you templates wherein you can set up styles.

How to do this in a data_table

I have an existing HTML table that allows highlight of rows when mouse passes over the row. The code that uses javascript events like onmouseout and onmouseover looks like this:

I don't see any tags in data_table that would allow me to do this. Is it possible to achieve these effects? How?

It would be possible to attach onmouseover events to each of the individual components inside the <h:column> tags ... that would attach the event handlers to the individual components, but would not work as expected if the user were able to move the mouse in between components on a particular row.
One strategy you might consider is to write your own Renderer for the UIData component. As it happens, the "Repeater" demonstration component that is shipped with the beta release provides the source code for a very basic Renderer for UIData. It would be very easy to start from this as a base and add a row-level onmouseover attribute that would be able to render the event handling code on the <tr> element.
Besides satisfying the requirements for your use case, it would be a fun way to learn the main APIs needed to support your own custom markup widgets in the future :-).

I am tryying to apply changes to paragraph styles in keynote 6.1 (mac). But in the list which opens when i click in the triangle only the basis paragraph styles are seen.
Any ideas how and whre i can find theses styles.

1) There is a table style (for the whole table)
And there are PARAGRAPH-styles for the text-attributes of the text in the table-cells (bold, italic, size, font etc.). I would call this a paragraph-style. This can be seen here:
But this style cannot be edited or changed because it does not show up in the dropdown of the parapgrah-styles - as can be seen here:
You DO NOT FIND the paragraph-style ("Absatzstil" in German) "Tabellenstil 1" in the dropdown.
