How to Replicate two Exchange 2010 Servers

Hello all,
This is my first post here. I fear our organization may have made a grave error. Here is our basic setup:
Location 1 - 3 2008 R2 standard servers in a domain. 1 Exchange 2010 sp3 server.
Location 2 - 3 2008 R2 standard servers in the same domain connected over CISCO VPN. 1 Exchange 2010 sp3 server
Our objective was to replicate the first site at the second site. We have setup DFS and made a BDC at the second site, no issues. However, I have been doing some reading on Exchange replication, and it looks like we are in trouble. I had read that Exchange
2010 could be fully replicated over two servers (unlike 2007). However, I now have read that this requires the Enterprise edition of Windows server 2008 R2. So, I guess I have three questions to start:
Is there ANY way we can replicate site 1 to site 2 with the current setup? Even if it means site 2 is "inactive" unless we need it for a failure at site 1?
If not, can we upgrade to the enterprise edition for the servers? Any idea on cost?
If we upgrade to Enterprise, is there a decent place to go to read on how to setup the second site?
Thanks very much.

Hello,
According to your description:
"Is there ANY way we can replicate site 1 to site 2 with the current setup? Even if it means site 2 is "inactive" unless we need it for a failure at site 1?"
For CAS and Hub Transport roles you can simply deploy an additional server in secondary site and configure namespaces, mail flow etc. For mailbox role you should configure
DAG. But it requires at least Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Enterprise or Windows 2012 Standard. In addition you cannot mix Failover Clustering and Windows Network Load Balancing so
for full redundancy you need:
1. Four Exchange servers: 2 CAS + Hub Transport with Network Load Balancing and 2 Mailbox servers with DAG.
2. Two Exchange servers with CAS, HT and Mailbox and deploy hardware Load Balancer.
"If not, can we upgrade to the enterprise edition for the servers? Any idea on cost?"
In-place upgrade is not supported when Exchange server is installed. The only option is to deploy an additional server (Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, 2012 Standard) and move
all resources from old server.
"If we upgrade to Enterprise, is there a decent place to go to read on how to setup the second site?"
The starting point is to configure Active Sites properly. For more info:

Easy way: with the one you want to use open in Outlook and the other one not in your profile, go to File, Open, Import.
If you only want to merge some content, open both pst files in outlook and drag between folders. For calendar, use a list view to see all of the appointments.

  • Renew SSL Certificate for for two Exchange 2010 Server and the new rules.

I find DigitCert's website always helpful with cert questions. They've got a pretty helpful page here: https://www.digicert.com/internal-names.htmIt looks like they've got a tool for Exchange, but I've not used it myself, so can't say if it works or how well: https://www.digicert.com/internal-domain-name-tool.htmI bet Microsoft have something on their website too that helps with this sort of question.I'd say you register a completely new domain and use that for public facing and internal servers. Or you could just create a sub domain of an existing one, i.e. subdomain.mydomain.com and use that, i.e. public_exchange.subdomain.mydomain.com and internal_exchange.subdomain.mydomain.com.

    Hi there ,
My exchange 2010 Server Certificate is about to expire and i am going to renew it but according to the new rules for SSL Certificate Issuing we can not include our Local Servers Names and Local FQDN such as myserver.contoso.local, my issue is that i have 2 exchange servers one is internet-facing Server (where the certificate is initiated and installed) and one is non-internet-facing Exchange server.
if i am going to renew my certificate with public only name, I have to create a split Domain that reflects my external links to the internal Users, what shall i do for the non-internet-facing server? do i need to create another record in my split DNS Server and add it to my Certificate Request ?

  • Upgrading domain controller from Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2, how will this affect Exchange 2010?

    Hi All,
Below is an AD and Server related post that I had submitted last week. While I did receive valid responses for the post, I was advised to check with the Exchange forums for the Exchange related  question in
bold. All responses are welcomed, thank you!
    ===========================================================
    Hi All,
I am hoping that someone could perhaps provide some insight on this topic as I apparently can't seem to google the best answer.
I have recently acquired an AD domain that is running on a 2003 domain controller. I have been tasked with upgrading our existing domain structure with 2012 R2 domain controllers for our main office and remote offices.
The domain name is company.mynetwork.com, and it is the default first site name. We have multiple offices throughout the US with their own domain controllers (i.e. FL.mynetwork.com, NY.mynetwork.com, DC.mynetwork.com, etc.).
Our main office, and default first site has one domain controller (mynetdc1) running Server 2003 R2. It is also our only DNS server for the main office. It also has an additional domain controller called mynetmaster3 which is running Server 2003.
Both mynetdc1 & mynetmaster3 NTDS settings show them as global catalogs under AD Sites & Services. Both servers are also in the AD Domain Controllers OU, along with all of the other satellite office domain controllers.
Additionally, our main office is running Exchange 2010 with the latest service pack. My questions are:
Can we demote and retire mynetmaster3, then replace mynetdc1 with a newly promoted 2012 R2 global catalog domain controller without harming anything in the domain tree and interrupting connectivity to the other offices (this of course goes without saying
after a 4 hour maintenance window to get the task completed has passed)?
Should we upgrade the satellite offices first after raising the functional level for mynetdc1, or should we do the opposite (upgrade main office, then satellite offices)?
MS Exchange 2010 is heavily dependent on AD, what effect will this entire project have on our email server? What steps should we take beforehand to ensure email continuity?
Finally, is there any shame for a Net Admin to suggest that we hire an implementation specialist for this task? :)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

As long as the operating system on your Exchange servers isn't upgraded, and as long as you do the Active Directory domain and forest updates in the supported manner (the following link is a good example -
http://blogs.msmvps.com/mweber/2012/07/30/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-or-windows-server-2003-r2-to-windows-server-2012/), Exchange will happily operate behind the scenes.  Exchange 2010 is supported in the Windows
forests (domain controllers, domain functional level and forest functional level) mentioned in the following TechNet article, which includes both Windows 2003 and Windows 2012.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623(v=exchg.150).aspx
Due to this, you should be good as long as you do the domain controller, domain, and forest upgrades carefully.  Oh, and before you start each step, get a nice backup.

  • Best Practices for patching Exchange 2010 servers.

    Hi Team,
Looking for best practices on patching Exchnage Server 2010.
Like precautions  , steps and pre and post patching checks.
    Thanks.

Are you referring to Exchange updates? If so:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff637981.aspx
Install the Latest Update Rollup for Exchange 2010
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee861125.aspx
Installing Update Rollups on Database Availability Group Members
    Key points:
    Apply in role order
    CAS, HUB, UM, MBX
If you have CAS roles in an array/load-balanced, they should all have the same SP/RU level.  so coordinate the Exchange updates and add/remove nodes as needed so you do not run for an extended time with different Exchange levels in the same array.
All the DAG nodes should be at the same rollup/SP level as well. See the above link on how to accomplish that.
If you are referring to Windows Updates, then I typically follow the same install pattern:
    CAS, HUB, UM, MBX
With windows updates however, I tend not to worry about suspending activation on the DAG members rather simply move the active mailbox copies, apply the update and reboot if necessary.

  • How long to rebuild Exchange 2010 index?

    Exchange 2010 sp3
so my index was disabled for some weeks due to low disk space. last night I extended the database drive partition to an additional 250GB, reenabled the index service, re-enabled the databases index too. since last night, the database copy status are still
    crawling.
the total size of all my databases are 1.07TB.
how long will the rebuild take?

    Hi,
There are many factors that influence the rebuild rates and time to complete, you can refer to this
    article.
You can track starting and ending of crawling with the Events 109 and 110 respectively in the application log.

  • Sequence for shutting down Exchange 2010 Servers

I have 3 mailbox servers, 3 CAS servers, 3 hubtransport servers, in active production, and I have 3 mailbox servers, 3 cas servers, and 3 hubtransport servers, as a DR.  I have a DAG between them and a Cassarray
These Servers are virtualized using vmware.
I need to know microsoft's BPA for shutting down these servers to move to another location.

Follow these- are you completely shutting down the server or planning to do the maintenance.?
    http://exchangeserverpro.com/forums/exchange-server-2010/3186-datacenter-power-shutdown-need-shutdown-all-exchange-servers.html
    http://www.kreslavsky.com/2011/04/shut-down-exchange-2010-dag-member.html
The correct way to perform any maintenance is to run first  StartDagServerMaintenance.ps1 script that is located under “C:Program FilesMicrosoftExchange ServerV14scripts”
This script moves all the active databases to next preferred DAG server and prevents active databases from moving to that server during the maintenance.
In addition the script ensures that all critical DAG support functionality that may be on this server has been moved to next proffered server
Once the DR site servers are in maintenance mode you can bring the serves down in DR site first, CAS and then Hub.
And then on the Primary Site shutdown the CAS and HUB, Dismount the DB and shutdown the servers.

  • Moving witness server to CAS server two Exchange 2013 servers with a DAG

Inherited a situation where there is one Exchange 2007 Build 83.6 server running on Win2008R2, acting as witness, and hub transport and yes is a file server too.  In addition there is relays, email and service accts that need to be moved to Exchange

Presently  there are two Exchange 2013 cu3 servers that are part of a DAG that also run on Win 2008r2...  We wish to add another node to the DAG, and move the witness to another server.
Do I need to also add a CAS Exchange 2013 server to replace the Ex 2007 server?
Can this server also act as the Witness?
What would be the best practices for this senario. All of these machines are VM's.

With an odd number of nodes, the File Share Witness will not be used, but you can still define it.
Any server ( any including any non-Exchange server) can serve as the FSW as long as its not a mailbox server n the DAG and it has the Exchange Trusted SubSystem group in the local admin group on that server.
Since you are using VMs, ensure the FSW isn't on the same host as a MBX DAG member.
Not sure what you mean by adding a CAS Exchange 2013 server. Do you mean you have not installed the CAS role yet for 2013? If so, then absolutetly you need one.

  • Mailbox migration between two Exchange 2013 servers is horribly slow

    Hi,
when migrating mailbox between 2 exchange 2013 servers,it s horribly slow. I have found some articles which describing problems about content indexing and missing AD group. This is not my problem, I have tried solutions but it didn't work. Both exchange
are next to each one, same VLAN, same switch. Just migrating between databases.
When I start batch jobs it is migrating only 1 mailbox at once and speed is really slow (2000 - 3000 mail items per 5 minutes). So mailboxes which have 10GB it's migrating 3 hours. My server is on 1gbps LAN.
I have also checked MsExchangeMailboxReplication.exe.config on both servers:
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetMDB="20"
        MaxActiveMovesPerSourceServer="100"
        MaxActiveMovesPerTargetServer="100"
        MaxTotalRequestsPerMRS="100"
Do you have any idea where to look why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once?
    Thanks

    Hello,
For the reason why only 1 mailbox is migrating at once when you start batch jobs, there is no official articles or blog to explain it.
I recommend you check if the speed is slower when you move a smaller mailbox. If the issue doesn't occur, I recommend you set
    the AllowLargeItems parameter.
