How to reseat processors

All,
I am having issues with my G5 dual 1.8 early 05 model (well, basically it won't boot anymore...) that i have described in another post (light on/off, spin noise, no chime, then fans full speed, then nothing).
Took it to an Apple approved service centre where they told me the usual "replace logic board" for a mere £700.
Before i part with my cash, i'd like to try reseating the processors as i have seen this fix similar issues in other posts. I'm trying to find out how it can be done though. I had a look but i don't know how to remove the processor cover and then reseat them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Laurent

Hi!
There are 2 small rivets on the side above the video card. With a sharp tool (blade or Xacto) pry up and remove the plug in the center. Put a screw in the rivet and rock it out of the heatsink. Then slide the cover to the front of the machine and lift...
Processors are fixed to the casing with four screws. You'll need an unusually long screwdriver (PH2 or 2.5 hex). Lift them up straight and when putting them back, you have to press down, do it on the base of the heatsink only.
Take care...

  • How to disable processors

    Hi all,
I use a full system simulator simics to boot sun solaris os and do some research on it. Now I have no idea how to disable a specified cpux after the system is booted. I have tried to use "psradm -f ID" to disable the cpuID. However, it seems that the processor won't be totally removed and after cycles running the system may latter crash. The reason I guess is that some tasks are still load onto that disabled processor.
I also found the asr-disable is good enough for some platform such as v440/v880. However I just got the sarek simulation environment, so I wonder whether there will be similar commands to totally disable the specified cpu so that the OS would not schedule any task or process to that processor.
Sorry for such silly questions. I just want to advance my researches.
    Thanks in advances!
    yihui

    Thanks for your reply.
Simics has the function of completely disabing any processor in simics. The reason why the system crashed later is that the OS do use the offline core to do some work, which is assumed in simics that the core is totally disabled. Therefore, the task in disabled core would not be processed and the system finally crashed.
So I just want to completely disable a specified core so that OS would not allocate any tasks to that core in the subsequent running of the system. Is there any good ideas?

  • How are these processors different?

I purchased a MacBook Air last summer and it came with this processor,  2.0GHz Intel Dual-Core Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz.   The top speed processor of the newly announced MacBook Air has this processor, 1.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz.  How are they different?
Seems the summer 2012 processor is a faster processor.  Did Apple downgrade the processor in the new MacBook Air?

The new processors are a different architecture.  They use significantly less power and offer something like a 40% improvement in graphics performance (this is probably the most significant improvement).  There would be a nominal difference in actual CPU performance regardless of the 300MHz difference.  So the new processors are actually a decent upgrade.

  • How to increase processor focus for rendering?

    Hi Folks,
I posted this is another thread, but it was kind of hijacking so I"m reposting a new one:
Issue: my MacPro 2.66 (latest rev of Tiger) seems to take longer than I would think to render, plus I checked the istat pro widget and only 93% of the processing is focused on the render. FCP (version: 5.1.4) is the only app open. I have 3.5 GB ram, although i understand that rendering is only processing based.
I cut my sequence (1.5 hour home movie transfer); edited the audio (needed pan adjusted) and
then rendered before outputting a QT reference file (not closed).
The render takes approximately 30 minutes and then the ref file takes 23'ish minutes. What boggles me mind is that unedited sequences of the same duration do not take as long to create the ref file. I could understand the duration if I hadn't rendered already, but I'm finding this weird no?
So, here's my question is twofold:
    1. why does it take so long after the render to create the ref file? The reason why I used a ref file is b/c i use bitvice to encode the mpeg2 files.
    2. is there a setting in FCP to dedicate more of the processing power? I seem to have all the settings in FCP to use 100% of the processors from what i can tell.
    Cheers
    Keebler

    thanks Jerry.
To clarify, I'm actually using the Mp 2.66 in this situation.
    The G4 has been semi-retired
Wrt rendering, I always render 'all' so theoretically, the files should be good to go without the ref file rendering anything, as you mentioned.
Too bad about the setting. I might contact Apple on this one. I find it weird that you can't tell the macpro to work harder on 1 process. you'd think it would go all out to work on a process, if that's the only process going. I know there are other minor continuos processes happening, but in terms of being a work horse, i fail to understand why it's 93% idle Maybe I just don't understand something about how computers work?
    Cheers,
    Keebler

    Alex,
You didn't say how much RAM you have in that box.  16GB?  OK...  4GB?  You are on hind end... You are probably paging out.  Going nowhere slow.  Buy a new box, upgrade,  or get a new hobby.
If the cpu is FAST and you have a bunch of RAM and the disks are FAST, you aren't going to tax the cpu.  OK, it's not that simple, that with what you can get to in Windows, that's about it.
You can look up some of this stuff on the 'net.  Once you crack the lid you are into another realm - interesting, but it can shorten the life of your equipment and cost a bunch of money.
Measure the output.  What do you see on the screen?  Are you dead when your competition is alive?  Or are you kicking A.. when they are screaming in the dirt?  There is your output.
As to the graphics,  Yeah,  I hate boring.  If you buy a big enough box and put enough resource in it, you can run the graphics... if you are winning your matches, run the pretty colors... otherwise, go all Black Knight on your competition and be dark and deadly.  Smiling.
    Good Hunting.

  • How to increase Processor Speed

I have a iMac Intel Core Duo 17'' and it has 512 MB RAM, and the BUS Speed is 667Mhz. I recently bought an M-Box from Digidesign which is for music, and when i plugged it in, it said there wasn't enough power to run the mbox. I looked at the specs and it says that i must have a G4 Processor with 933 Mhz or higher and Mac OsS X Version 10.3.9 or 10.4. I want to know how i can increase my computer to run this product and how much it would cost. Can you people please help me?

If you mean that an error was displayed on your screen saying that there was not enough power, then where did you plug this device in?
Did you plug it directly into the USB ports on the back of your computer?
The USB ports on the keyboard and on the back of other devices are usually provide less electrical power.
If you are getting this error message even when it is plugged-into the USB ports on the back of your computer (directly into those ports), then you may need to see if there is a power adapter for your M-Box.
It may come with it's own power supply, or require you to purchase one. If so, that power supply would plug directly into the M-Box.
As for the specifications / system requirements, you already exceed what is printed on the box.
But, you are running an Intel system. So, you'll want to make sure that the software and device are able to work with an Intel Mac. The specifications you list are assuming that you are using an older PowerPC Mac (the previous generation of processors).
Most PowerPC software will run properly on an Intel Mac. But, some programs and devices do not.
I don't see a device listed as M-Box listed as one of their current products. So, I didn't see exactly what you are working with or trying to get working.
But, you should check to make sure that it is compatible with the newer Intel-based Macs.
    I hope this helps.

  • How fast of processor?

Im looking to buy a new mac book ro pro not sure yet but just wondering how fast of proocessor i need. im gunna use it for school , movies, photos, music, internet games, and some fairly big store bought games but wont play verry much.

Hi lookingformac: I think I would respectfully disagree with the other respondent. I would get the lower speed processor (You will not see a speed difference in "Real World" use). Spend the money you saved on the processor to max out the ram.
    Happy Mac computing

  • How strong my processor has to be to render?

Hi Im wandering what's wrong with my imac, I'm trying to render 3 min video and it takes for ever and then my FCP doesn't respond, I got Mac OS X Version 10.5.7 Compressor 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 1GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Is it enough for rendering ? if not, what is the cheeper way to upgrade my processor ? how much is it ? if i need.

Rendering is based on a number of variables-- your footage codec, resolution, bit depth, applied filters, keyframes, etc. Can you provide any of this information?
In regards to upgrades, the first thing I'd do is get to 2GB RAM at least. There is no way to upgrade the iMac's processor without buying a new one.

  • How to set processor with 2 core to parallel working

    I have a intel core2 duo with 32bit Arch.
I allow paralleling work in bios. In the system I see 2 processor and both are working. But they don't work together. I mean when processor A is comming up then processor B is comming down. When A working at 80% then B working only at 20%. I think they rotate with their work but never working together.

Multicore is difficult, because many things are hard to do in parallel. In other words: Many tasks will only use one processor.
But just to see both processors at 99% you can do the following:
Open two terminals. Execute in both terminals the following code:
    while [ 1 ]; do echo -n; done
This is a simple infinite loop in bash, which will "print nothing" and "stress" your CPUs. (Use Ctrl+C to end the loop.)

Hi Peter, I have Windows managing the virtual memory.  I have 7+GB free on my drive and I recently defragged.
I ended up just resaving under a different name and deleting all but the chapters I was working on, which is working better.
However, when I import it back, I will have problems with the delay again.
Saving a file to a new name relieves most applications of the effort and memory needs to track changes to the file; the normal save process usually emulates what you might do on paper - circle content that's moved and draw a line to the new location, mark content to delete, write in the margins and mark with insertion carats, for new material. Save as does all those tasks, cleaning up the file internally, so there's less work to do. New saves starts the process over.
2GB RAM is marginal - parts of running applications, and current content in those applications is temporarily stored in RAM, if there's enough, or in virtual memory (really written to disk). It's faster to store and retrieve completely or mostly in RAM; the less virtual memory (disk) used, the faster. Also, with virtual memory, the faster the disk drive (7200, or 10,000, or 15,000 RPM, vs. 5200 (the most common in older and low-end systems), the faster virtual memory processing will be.
Working with large amounts of material in individual files and managing them with the InDesign book feature reduces the processing load, because you only have a few moderate-sized files open, not the whole humongous file.
7GB once was considered "lots of space." When I bought an expensive box of ten single-sided 5.25' floppies, each able to store 85KB, with my first computer, I thought I'd never need any more back-up storage. When I moved to an affordable (~$400) HUGE 20MB hard drive after a couple of years, I had hundreds of floppies, many of which I had "notched" to make them able to convince the disk drives that they were double-sided disks that could be inserted in the single-sided drive with one or the other side up, to gain double capacity.
The point here is that in your 7GB of free space, you need to store the virtual memory, and any data that the application normally writes temporarily to disk in order to perform its tasks, and any temporary storage that Windows needs as well. Perhaps 2x, 3x, or more times the total size of all active files in the active application is needed. Unlike Photoshop, Illustrator, and other applications, InDesign doesn't offer the ability to specify a separate "scratch disk," on which to do this background work; in a sense, it's like a multiple processor CPU, in that it divides the work. Without a scratch disk, the single drive has to alternate between storing and retrieving material - store, retrieve, store, retrieve, etc. IOW, SLOW. It would be a great feature enhancement request; you can enter it formally at Adobe - Feature Request/Bug Report Form.

  • How to count processors on Linux 5.6 for Oracle Coherence

We are running coherence on Sun blade servers with multicore processors with Hyperthreading enable. Therefore, the /proc/cpu information shows 24 cores. For the sake of calculating the cores for use with coherence (.5 core per member) do we use the actual number of cores or the number reported (12 actual cores vs 24 cores with Hyperthreading)?
    Thank you.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying. OEL 5.6 comes with 2 kernels: uek and red hat
I have chosen to use red hat kernel for 64-bit. I run the following command:
    [root@rac1 /]# uname -rm
    Output: 2.6.18-238.el5x86_64
I have downloaded 4 files for this version of kernel from
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/linux/downloads/rhel5-084877.html as below:
    oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5xen-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
    oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5debug-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm

    oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
I have installed the 4 files and got the error messages for the first 2 files as below:
    [root@rac1 /]# rpm -ivh /home/oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5xen-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm
Error: Failed dependencies: kernel-xen=2.6.18-238.el5 is needed by oracleasm-2.6.18-238.el5xen-2.0.5-1.el5.x86_64.rpm

The last 2 files have been installed successfully. But when reboot Oracle Linux Server-Base 2.6.18-238.el5, I still see :
    "Initializing ASMLib driver: FAILED."
    [root@rac1 /]#/etc/init.d/oracleasm configure -i
Its output "initializing Oracle ASMLib driver: OK "
    My questions are:
Does the issue OS "Initializing Oracle ASMLib driver: FAILED" have effect later ? Do we need to solve it ?
    Thanks.

  • How much Number of virtual processors for VMs

    Hi,
there is lots more information about logical processors, cores and CPU and their definitions, on the internet. also here in this forum.
In order to make sure i am not lost on internet, it is better to take experts advice like you.
I have simple question read on:
I have a Hyper-v cluster host with 4 sockets (4 CPU's) with 6 cores each. so total are 24 cores.
I can see in hyper-v host Logical processors are 48. (which may be 1 proc = 12 logical processors, so 4 proc x 12 = 48 logical processors)
now how much virtual processors I can assign to each VM. I know I can assign more logical processor depending on application requirement. and it affects application performance. For each VM, it is showing maximum i can select 48 virtual
    processors.
is it true I can select any number of virtual processors in each VM? is there any limitation?
is it that if i have 8 VMs if i set virtual processors to 6 then it will occupy all logical processors (48 in my case) and i  will not be able to allocate logical processor to new VMs?
is it that if i have 10 VMs and all set to 10 virtual processors?
    thank you

Quite honestly - this math really does not matter that much with modern processors. (a combination of speed and core count, and advances in CPU scheduling in the hypervisor)
You have to have a VM with many vCPU to get into any point of contention.
In practice, It is very difficult to over-subscribe your CPU resources without hitting some other bottleneck first.
Set the vCPU count where it is appropriate for your workload.  That means testing your workload to see where adding additional vCPU to a VM provides no benefit in throughput or speed or capacity for your application.
A select few applications are written in a way that there is a linear correlation between CPU count and throughput.
There is an old point about not assigning so many vCPU to a VM that the VM could end up with more than one execution thread on the same processor (core).
You have 24 cores.  and each has 12 logical processors (execution threads).  So, with zero CPU over-subscription you could have 288 vCPU assigned to any number of VMs.  To expand my point in the previous paragraph - you can easily / safely go
over this count of 288 - what I am referring to above is an old guideline that would guide you to not assigning more than 288 vCPU to a single VM - ensuring that no single execution thread is trying to service more than one vCPU of the same VM.

  • Dual Processors -- How Exactly Does Logic Use Them?

I've searched this forum but haven't found any definitive, exacting information that would answer this question: How does Logic utilize both processors of a Dual Processor G5?
Real information -- not guesses -- would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Rohan, thanks for your detailed reply.
Actually, I hadn't surmised anything about how the dual processor architecture was implemented, except for the one idea that, perhaps, the second processor would be used to accellerate screen graphic drawing while the first one ("primary processor"??) dealt with audio matters. But I have the feeling this ain't happenin'.
I haven't yet put Logic through any serious paces yet with my new G5/Logic system, so I've yet to see the System Performance meter read on anything but the left side of the Audio Meter.
But back to the graphics drawing situation, compared to my G4 dual 450 (with dual head Radeon graphics accellerator card) running an older version of Logic, the response of Logic 7 running on my new "whoop-tee-doo" G5 dual 2.7 is deathly slow in certain respects...
For example, I recorded 8 simultaneous audio tracks. When I hit stop, the spinning pizza wheeled about for at least 30 seconds before rendering the waveform display for each track. And while the pizza is spinning, you're locked out of performing other operations. But on my G4, I could record audio and immediately start doing other things while the waveforms rendered.
    Enough whining for now...
Tommy, exactly. It's nice to know how your tools work. When buying a computer or software, I don't think that anything concerning their operation should be left unexplained. But that's a lamentation for another day. In the meantime, it's great that this forum exists so Logic users can help each other out.

  • How often does CEP processor execute queries?

    Hi there,
I have a little trouble with understanding how often cep processor executes queries.
It seems that queries are executed every time a new event arrives, that can lead to some troubles.
For example, consider that we have 4 events, which match a certain condition. If we try to select such events from a stream like that
select * from myStream[range 30 seconds slide 30 seconds] and the events arrive within the 30 seconds, the cql processor will not execute query until next event arrives.
How can we force cql processor to execute queries every 30 seconds even if there is no new events?
