do you know how to reset the firmware password on a workstation ultra 30?
each command on the ok prompt ask me for a firmware password. i tried (of course unsuccessfully) several.

You are partially correct. It depends if the security-mode is set to "command" or "full" (and if auto-boot?=true). If it is set to command, he can put in the other systems disk (in the same slot) and enter "b" to boot, then enter the eeprom command as root after he logs in. However, he cannot boot to cdrom because the boot-device is directed to the hard drive and cannot be changed without the eeprom password. I have used this technique to set security-mode=none on several E250s in years past.
If it is set to "full", his only option is to enter the password and log in to get an OK prompt, which leaves him where he currently is.
You dont have to get your prom from SUN. The SUN part number for an Ultra30 prom is: 525-1669, which you get several hits on if you search. IIRC, anysystems.com doesn't list the part but they can probably help you out.

Hi when I bought my macbook pro second hand, I didn't realize there was a firmware password for the computer making it impossible to enter the boot options menu. I have tried the password that came with the computer and my user password and neither worked, so how can I reset the password? Is there a general default password? Any way I could do it without going to the apple store as the nearest one is three hours away and I don't have transportation to get there.

You can only reset the firmware password if you know it. Also, you need to start from OS X Recovery or the OS X disc in order to reset it, so it's not possible to do anything else. The only thing you can do is to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller, because there's no way to reset your firmware password that we already know

If you've just added an address to your account then it will be an alternate/secondary email address, a rescue email address can only be added by answering 2 of your security questions. If you already had one on your account then go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email addressthen you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

Did you disable UNIX group and ENS login authorities? Check with:
# /opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella config list --login-ens
# /opt/tarantella/bin/tarantella config list --login-unix-group
They should both return 1. If not use config edit to set them accordingly.

Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.
     Enter resetpassword at the prompt and press RETURN. Follow
     instructions in the dialog window that will appear.

If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:

This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
mount -uw /
ifconfig lo0 up
cd /var/db/netinfo
netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
Now, enter:
sync
reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

No, Firmware Password Protection is different than your login/admin password. The login password is the one you need to install an app or unlock a preference pane - you set that in System Preferences > Accounts.
Firmware Password Protection prevents booting from the optical drive, prevents safe mode, etc. - you should have a good reason for wanting to turn this on, and be aware that you may cause yourself some grief if you ever need to troubleshoot your MBP. from a completely shut down state, not a re-start, press and hold the F1 key while starting the system. The system should then beep and show the lock symbol with the error codes which mean that the date and time aren't correct, (as a result of the CMOS battery being pulled).
At the lock prompt enter your supervisor password, not the old or new power-on password, set the time and date to the correct values and remove or change the supervisor password as described in the manual. If you do not know the supervisor password you will need to find it out from the previous owner if there was one; otherwise you will need a new mainboard.
