Pixelated images (with High Quality Display turned on)
Here's my problem: The images look sharp on the internet, but when I download them, place them in Indesign and print them, the look pixelated!
Take this one for example: http://media.smashingmagazine.com/images/typefaces/productus.gif
It's resolution is 72 ppi. But when I place it onto the Indesign A4 page (or Letter format for that matter) it occupys almost entire width of the page.
Why is it so? Why is it so big by default without enlarging it? It's kinda logic that a small 72 ppi image stretched across the whole page will appear blurry when printed on 300 dpi printer.
So how can I set the indesign page to 300 ppi/dpi so images with lower restion will appear smaller when placed on the page and - will be printed sharp?mike.n03 wrote:
Where can you specify this preference?
And you mean there's a script for InDesign? Wow, it would be cool to get it. So far I solved that problem by recording an Action in Photoshop and than apply it to all the images using Batch command.
Preference is down at the bottom of the File Handling section ... Check the bos to preserve dimensions and a the relinked file will be scaled back to the same size in ID. Uncheck, and the scale percentage will be preserved.
Almost anything is scriptable in ID (but I don't write them). I recall a script that was posted a year or two ago that would allow you to select an image and type a desired effective resolution into a dialog. The image would get scaled to reach that effective ppi. Your batch action in Photoshop is fine, and useful if you want to palce everything at 100%, but it isn't required to change the resolution in Photshop to achieve what you want. Scaling in ID is exactly the same thing as changing the resolution without resampling in Photoshop. No pixels are added, removed or altered -- only their dispalyed size is changed. If you want a script to set all images to 300 ppi effective resolution, you should probably pay a visit to the scripting forum. -
How do I batch resize images with different aspect ratios?
How do I batch resize images with different aspect ratios?

Landscape: I want result to be 1960 x 1103 px and 72 ppi whether the original is 300 ppi or 220 ppi and wether it is 2Mb or 10 Mb. Cropped centered top and bottom.
There will be a set of Landscapes that that have a narrower aspect ratio the 1960:1103 that would also need the top and bottom cropped like all Portraits would could be. You need to realize that center cropping Landscape image that have aspect ratios near 1960:1103 will usually produce acceptable compositions. However Cropping wide panoramas and portraits will only produce acceptable landscape 1960:1103 composition occasionally.
Here you will see what happens when image have aspect ratio the do not fit the desired aspect ratio. Where Landscape are forced to portrait and portrait forced to Landscape. Here are two Collage I populated with a mixture of image with different aspect ratios. One collage has all 3:2 Landscape places and the other 2:3 Portrait places.
I create a 1 image 1960x1103 collage 72dpi and create those too. Note the landscape boy foot is cropped off 3:2 is narrow compared to 1960:1103 -
I have a Photography Studio and I am trying to create client slideshows that display in very high quality. If I view the slideshow as created on iPhoto, the output is fantastic. If I burn a disc with iDVD (even on "Best Quality") the images as viewed from the DVD are not great. They become a little jaggy and some color shifting is evident. Not horrible, just not professional looking. My files are high quality .psd files. I have tried the process with high quality .jpg files, too.
Is the answer a PRO level DVD compression product? Voodoo????
I am at my wits end, but it was a short trip to get there.
Thanks for any and all help,
LouieHi,
I understand you want to create a DVD, right? Before you know how to get the best quality, you must choose what software to use . You can build slideshows using just DVD Studio Pro (DVDSP Folrum) and/or in a video timeline with FinalCutPro (FCP Forum).
Each soft need a different approach ! You'll find a lot of posts with useful information in that forums and you can post your own when you decide what tool use for your project.
If you want to build simple slideshows with just a transition or no transition at all, where the people can choose next prev and so picture, you can use DVDSP.
If you want a more sofisticated presentation where you can control completly adnvanced trasitions and zoom/pan effects, you need to create it in a video application like FCP.
You posted this question in Compressor forum, what is a tool for transcoding your video footage to, i.e. MPEG2 files to include in DVDSP.
About quality, think that Standard Definition DVDs have a resolution of 720x480 pixels (NTSC) what probably is absolutly low resolution compared with your original pictures, but doesn't mean your pictures will look bad. Any comercial movie DVD you watch has that resolution ! The advantage is that every DVD player (computer and stan alone ones) will be able to play it.
When you mention the iPhoto slideshow, I think you mean a slideshow you played directly from your computer what is a completly different approach that DVD.
I just want to give a start point. -

Click on the menu at top left of your screen, choose About This Mac and, in the panel that appears, note the Version no. in the form 10.n.n. Then update your product list so we can see what version of OS X you're running on the Mac — see this tutorial:

How do I import with highest quality ? Should I chose ''optimized media'' when importing or chose nothing ?
Hey Marcs,

Ventrilo Mic Hiss with high quality Mic and X-Fi Titanium PCI-E
?Ventrilo Mic Hiss with high quality Mic and X-Fi Titanium PCI-E? I have <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.astrogaming.com/products/detail/4/A40-Headset/]this headset.[/url]? It works perfectly on other setups and is a very high quality headset.
Recently, I installed the X-fi Titanium PCI-E card. Everything sounds great and my mic works well in other programs and games, however, when talkin in ventrilo there is?a noticeable high pitch?microphone hiss. The hiss goes away when I put my fist around the mic, but I can't exactly talk like that. Plus putting foam around the mic doesn't make it go away.
The headset works fine on other setups so it is not at fault. It's almost like there is a mic boost on, but there doesn't seem to be a mic boost feature in the Creative Console.
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Intel Core I7 920 @ 3.4ghz
6GB RAM
4870x2 GPU
Asus P6T Deluxe MOBO
Creative Sound Blast X-Fi Titanium PCI-E
Any ideas. I've tried everything. I used to exact same ventrilo settings on another computer and have had no problems, so it is not ventrilo and is not the mic. It has to be something wrong with the sound card.
ThanksTurned my T.V. off and the hiss went away.
Must have been some sort of interference. -
How do I create a High Quality Image with a low file size???
Dear All,
I am creating an invitation in Illustrator which I then place into photshop to create a JPEG. I want to create a high quality JPEG version of it but with a low file size because I am emailing the invitation. Am I correct in placing the image into photshop or should I export it from Illustrator.
The image is built of of vectors and one JPEG but they are not high in quality.
Can anyone help me please
Thanks
BenThe image is built of of vectors and one JPEG but they are not high in quality.
For this type of image you would probably be better choosing GIF format (now known for some reason as 'Compuserve GIF'). Taking the number of "colors' down untl it still looks high quality, and anti-aliasing is preserved. -
I have a 5x7 invitation I made in illustrator. I need to export a high quality image it to a friend for her to print but everytime I export to jpeg it comes out way bigger than a 5x7. How do I send a specific size to someone? Do i need to use photoshop? Please help. Thanks!!
Elizabeth,
It sounds as if the Artboard is 8 x 10. It should fit the Artwork (at 5 x 7). -
Your tip in Printing in Indesign--working with high quality images
Hi everyone,
I am very curious about what the other professionals' idea about printing and using Indesign to print.
I am working on a project that with high resolutions of model and product images together.
Since I had to move elements on the layout. Model and product images are in different layers in Indesign.
I used Indesign to combine those images together to create ads for magazine.
However, I was told that it would be "SAFER" to combine those images together FRIST in photoshop.
he thinks the process should be that:
---Having a flated image of model and products in photoshop first
----then bring that one image in Indesign.
----This way it would insure the color will be right.
What do you guys think?
The places I worked in the past, has not done stuff like that.
I feel like ...colors aren't something we could control when magazine uses their own printing vendor.
What is your process to ensure the color is right when priting a combination of different high resolution tiff files?
Thank you very much for your time and knowleage.
LoriAssuming you have some sort of color management in place, I would continue to do it the way you are.
But let's say you did want to follow this fellow's advice. Here's everything I can think of.
Putting the models and products together on one Photoshop "page" can wind up making the PSD file very big as there may be spaces between the models and products.
Never, ever flatten that Photoshop file. There's no need and makes a very complicated workflow if you have to make any changes.
You're right about the magazine printing process taking over color.
What are you sending the magazine? A PDF? There's totally no need to flatten in Photoshop then.
The art is flattened in it's own way.
I'm also assuming that your prducts and models are close to each other -
How to resize images on book pages
Friends,
My wife is making a book in Aperture (latest version). Somehow, she structured it so that each image has a border around it, like a snapshot. This probably makes sense, since her theme is "snapshots." However, she is unable to resize the images on the page. Is it possible to do so? How?
As an aside, we can add new photo boxes, but they lack a border. However, they can be resized.
Any thoughts would be helpful.
Thanks!
SteveIt is possible to resize photos with or without borders while in "Edit Layout" mode, but not in "Edit Content" mode.
To adjust and add/remove borders, click on the gear below the pages window, then click on "Show Layout Options". The options then appear above the pages window where you can adjust the size (thickness) and color of the border.
You can also rotate the photo box too, with the "Angle" setting. Increasing the angle number rotates the photo box counter clockwise, so in order to get to rotate the "other" direction you simply have to increase the angle around the higher end of a circle (360 degrees), or say 345 degrees. Play with it, it makes sense when you do it.
Hope that helps.

How Can I Make a High Quality HD DVD Video (dvd vob)
i work a hd project and after we will make a dvd video. if i export a mov and convert it with toast titanium the quality is bad. if i make it dvd studio pro hd dvd mac and pc is open but dvd player does not play it. and the other version dvd studio pro convert from 16/9 to 4/3. but i don't like it. the other one i send to compressor and chose the dvd/hd dvd:mpeg-2 30 minutes it exports mv2 not vob(audio ts video ts)
so i want to make a high quality hd dvd video how can i do that?

Message was edited by: rec_offI don't know about NTSC but there is a nice PAL solution for SD 16:9 for ordinary DVDs. The 16:9 image becomes 720x576 pixels. So the pixels are each quite wide, and the horizontal resolution is less than the vertical resolution, but at least no pixels are wasted as with letterbox.
A semi-solution is to make a HD-DVD. That format has been abandoned but Apple software pretends otherwise. Apple Compressor does compressions at around 20 Megabits/second data rate specifically for HD-DVD, and Apple DVD Studio Pro makes HD-DVDs. For short projects, less than around 30 minutes, the HD-DVD can be made on a normal DVD. (I did this for a 40 minute project by cutting the bitrate somewhat.) The quality is almost equal to Blu-Ray, but who can play it? People with well equipped Apples can.
