  • IMac white screen - how best to proceed

My iMac will not start up - stops on the white screen.  I can access the files using Back to my Mac and am transferring some important files from the iMac to my MBP  (I will try reinstalling OSX, but want to try everything else first in case I can't use Back to my Mac after reinstalling), BUT
    1.  Cannot access the Mail library from the MBP (the iMac Mail is set to POP) as the Library has gone and hidden itself again!!!!!!!!!!!  (Why on earth did Apple make this a hidden file?) - so - would it be likely to work if I tried to remotely change the iMac mail account to smtp, or, is there any way of unhiding the Library remotely?,  OR
    2.  The iMac is backed up to Time Machine - could I access the Library from the MBP via this route?, AND
    3.  My iPhone, Ipod etc are all linked to iTunes on the Imac - if I can get to them can I move the iTunes files to the MBP without a problem?, AND
    4.  Is there any way (if the iMac is truely dead) to remove the hard disk either to use it as an external disk or to ensure it is destroyed along with the data on it?
    Thanks

Insert your original grey installation disc and restart while holding the C key, choose you language and when you get to the screen with atop menu bar go to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. Choose your hard drive in the panel to the left and click repair. When it's done you can quit DU, restart and you should be good to go.

  • How to fix and imac white screen with a ? Mark

I have a white screen with a ? Folder that has a ? Mark what do i do???

    Likely yes, but...
Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

  • SOLVED-Install not booting on Intel Imac-white screen

I just tried to install Archlinux with the new install disc fo the fifth time, without succes.
When I restart the computer all i get is a white screen.
Restarting the install disc, mounting the harddisk partitions and arch-chrooting I can get into the installed linux, I can do everything even install new programs and get these working but when starting normally it's the white screen again.
It is an Intel Imac dual core with 27" screen on whitch the old install disc did it's work flawlessly.

How long do you wait on that white screen?
I have arch on two different macs - and early iMac, and an early macbook.  They both have long delays on the white EFI screen.
There are allegedly ways to fix this but I have never bothered as I do not reboot either of these machines that often.  Many reports claim it should be a 30 second delay, but on the IMac I'm typing from now (in arch) it is at least 2 minutes.  Whenever I need to reboot this machine, I just type reboot, then go for coffee.

  • 24" iMac - white screen - with a file folder in the centre that has a '?'

When I awakened my iMac, I wished to open iPhoto but when I clicked on it in the dock a screen came down from the top darkening the screen and superimposed on it was a message telling me to shut down. However, when I rebooted all I got was a white screen and after a minute a grey file folder bearing a query mark (?) appeared. This iMac has only been used a couple of weeks since having its hard drive replaced and now this ! What does the file folder represent ? Thanks.

Thanks everyone. I was able to reboot successfully after I disconnected the power cable, waited for 30 seconds, and then reconnected the cable. (Page 42 of Everything Mac.)

  • How to remove/skin white screen when loading StageWebView

    Hello all,
I'm facing a very tricky issue with StageWebView into a mobile View.
    I'm using this example -> http://soenkerohde.com/2010/11/air-mobile-stagewebview-uicomponent/
BUT, my application has a black background and when i'm loading an HTML (wich also has a black background) the StageWebView components it's white when loading, and that i dont like.
On viewActivate handler for StageWebView component i've put the stageWebView.stage = null; and created an event handler.
    The event handler has the command stageWebView.stage = myStage;
In this way i can show a loader (busy indicator) and when the page is fully loaded in background,it will pop on view.
When the StageWebView pops in view i get a flashy white screen. I have tested it on Samsung Galaxy S2 (Android).
How i can get rid of it?
Any sugestions will help a lot.
    Regards,
    Daniel

  • How to unfreeze a white screen?

my son's ipod touch has frozen on a white screen and i have tried  reseting by holding down the mute button and home button at the same time for at least 10 secs- i've done this several time and it is not working.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Inherited iMac, White screen of death, etc...

Hello, Fairly new to the world of mac.
    I have been given a iMac 20" G5 a M9250LL/A...
Looks in good condition, powers up ok. But I get a white screen with a flashing mac folder icon.
Tried resetting the Navram, epram and everything else under the sun...
I installed a new hard drive, a 500GB western digital one. Power up and it still doesn't see it.
I then held down the option key, hopefully it would see it?. no chance...
Boots in Open firmware ok and see's hard drive, etc...
So I tried connecting via a firewire cable from a friends macbook and success, reformatted the drive, installed Snow Leopard and nothing.
nada, zip... starts up on the macbook just fine.
Someone told me that I need to install Tiger first?.. that true?
I've spent a few days trying all kinds of things I've found on youtube and google and drawing a blank here...
Would anyone be able to offer some advice? - I'm a bit confused as I've tried everything!!
Would love to get this machine working, I rather not have to take it to the dump and have to get a 2nd hand windows machine off ebay!!
    HELP!!

    Hello, Just an update..
Thanks to rccharles and michelpm for your reply's they were very helful. Thank you!
I'm a great believer in recycling and upcycling and it would be an awful shame to see something heading for the dump that would probably only need a few new capacitors for couple of quid...
It was an inherited machine (probably for good reason) and 5 1000uF caps were bad (bulging) TBH, I had nothing to loose and I have a old PC laptop to use should I do a hideous job. Figured I just go for it, besides, it kept me busy between a few shifts at work.
The only electronics I did at school was in the Physics lab and even then, I wasn't really paying much attention. But I'm a believer that anyone can do anything, if they set their mind to it... just take your time and prepare
    1) So I got myself onto youtube watched some videos on soldering.
Some good, some hopelessly boring others, mildly disturbing..
    2) I bought a soldering kit off ebay for £8 which came with a very helful guide, entitled:
"The basics of Electronics Soldering and Desoldering Guide" by Alan Winstanley.
    3) Ordered the capacitor kit off ebay for £8
    4) Borrowed a DVD of Leopard.
made a cup of tea, deep breath and then went about desoldering and soldering in the new caps.
20 min job and then reverse of removal, press the power button and a few nervous seconds and it was up and running and installing off the hard drive.
So, basically, what I'm saying is don't junk your machine for the sake of a couple of capacitors.
If I can do it, you definately can!
    Total spend:
    iMac                       £0.00
    Capacitor kit            £8.00
    500Gb Hard Drive   £18.00
    Bluetooth Card         £5.00
    Soldering Iron kit      £8.00
    Total:                      £39
Pretty sure you could'nt buy a working iMac for under £40, so I think I did pretty well, all things considered.
    This fixed:
    Hard Drive not being recognised
    Fan sounding like a Hoover
    White screen of D E A T H
    Found a useful website here:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_G5_20%22_Model_A1076
If you are in the situation I was in and had nothing to loose, give it a shot, not only will you learn something, but you'll get the satisfaction of repairing it and breathing new life into an old device.
    Cheers!

  • HT1459 how to permanently fix white screen after resetting and restoring

How to permanently fix a 'White Screen" after resetting and restoring? 2nd generation ipod

There are two different resets. The reset you did involved holding the sleep/wake & home button.
The other reset will do exactly what it says. That reset is located in Settings - General - Reset.

  • Any advice on how to fix a white screen?

Within about 30 seconds of powering up cold the screen goes white. The computer seems to be working. I can eject a CD for example. On repeating the power up the screen may show a brief flicker of an image but then reverts to white. I tried resetting Pram, I also tried booting up from system CD. I then tried opening the Imac, cleaning it and pressing on the connectors in case a connector might be loose. Followed instructions from discussion board from someone who fixed a pink screen. However, in my case after putting the Imac back together the same white screen problem exists.
Buy hey. my computer is clean even if I can't use it or get files off it.
Any advice on what might be the problem?

Perhaps your current projects contain some element that is tripping up the PDF playback.
I would suggest you do some testing using the process of elimination method to narrow down why the current projects are not working in PDF.
First create a new blank project with a few ordinary screen objects, publish to PDF and then test to ensure that there's nothing wrong with your Captivate installation per se.  If those work, then try the methodolody outlined in this post to hide slides until you find the reason:

  • IMac white screen after sleep since latest update

Ever since I updated our iMac to 10.8.3, we get a blank white screen when we wake it from sleep. We can "wipe away" the white to reveal the desktop by dragging the mouse across the screen. It appears to be a video memory issue.

I have the same problem ever since I updated to 1.8.3.
Have any of you heard about a possible way to fix this?
