How to resolve kernel panic

Hi, been unable to use my 2007 imac today due to a kernal panic situation. I hadn't heard of such until today and have no idea how to resolve the problem. Have tried restarting it a few times also with a combination of holding down alt, holding down cmd R, holding down the shift and also managed to track down the original installation disks but not sure how to use them to any effect. I have virtually no technical knowlege (which is why I use macs!) please any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks...

You will need a stronger 3rd party utility to repair. Utilities are best run from the CDs  to avoid system interference & false readings/reports.  You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.
You need to make your own decision on which to purchase.  Read up on them on their websites because each do something a little different.

Another thing to consider is that your HD is failing.  Boot from the DVD that originally came w/your comp & run Apple Hardware Test.  Post the results.

    Hello Ruth:
Kernel panics may be caused by either hardware or software (with an unscientifically analyzed bias to hardware, IMO).
I do not read crash logs well.
I do suggest you do a couple of things:
    1. Run the Apple hardware checker (boot from your install DVD while holding the "D" key down).
    2. Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
If none of that helps, you might consider an archive and install to "eliminate" software as an issue.

Kernel panics are primarily caused by hardware faults and incompatible kernel extensions (kext).
By looking at what processes are in the backtrace, you may be able to determine if it is a bad kext.
It is very rare that an Apple kext will cause a panic, so any third-party kexts are suspect.
You can test if it is a third-party kext by booting into Safe Mode. If it doesn't panic in Safe Mode, then it is one of the third-party kexts as most of those will be disabled in Safe Mode.
Some kexts are known bad actors, like the Soundflower driver.
Very often kexts will break with an OS upgrade. If the developer isn't actively working to update the drivers for the new OS, they will cause kp's until fixed.
AV software is also implicated quite often.
If it continues to panic in Safe Mode or when all third-party kexts have been uninstalled, it is likely a hardware problem.
Disconnect any external peripherals except keyboard and mouse. If it doesn't panic, it might be one of the external devices.
If no external hardware, kexts, then it is something wrong with the hardware. If you had third-party kexts installed, I would reinstall the OS first before considering the hardware.
Finally, bad RAM is very often the cause of kp's on Macs as people try to install cheap RAM and it can't handle the load that OS X puts on the memory. Even if not incompatilbe RAM, RAM can come unseated (rare with the connectors these days) or fail.

  • Help Resolving Kernel Panic Before Leopard!

Hi all! Before I begin, FYI: I read the article on Kernel panics, and I'm attempting to follow the instructions to the letter about how to report one and get help here. Apologies in advance if I'm doing something wrong.
I've had my iMac 2GHZ for 2 years, and I've NEVER had a kernel panic--until today, the day before I want to install Leopard. Go figure. Anyhow, if someone could possibly let me know what I'm dealing with/help me out, I'd love to proceed with my archive and install of Leopard. (As of now, I have not yet opened the package. lol)
Here's the log of the Kernel Panic--under it, I've listed what programs were active at the time, and what was connected.

Running at the time: Mail, Safari (using yahoo's new home page), Adium.
It occurred as I opened an aol email IN APPLE's MAIL app.
    Connected to the machine:
    HP 3210 Printer (off),
    ION USB 2.0 External HD,
External flash reader (empty, via a USB 2.0 hub),
Wacom Tablet (via USB 2.0 hub).
Any steps I can take? Diskwarrior? Disk First Aid? Should I just move on with my archive and install?
    Thanks in advance guys.
    null

    OK!
I detached my ion firewire external HD (Which has always played nice with my machine lol), as well as USB 2.0 hub which had 2-3 items attached.
I restarted, and attempted to recreate what happened. I opened Safari, then Mail, then Adium. Signed on to Adium, and began checking mail--which is when the panic happened.
So far, nothing... is there a next step?
PS: Two things you should know:
    1) I ran Diskwarrior (successfully) a day ago BEFORE this happened--would that have caused any issues?
    2) AFTER the panic, I ran Disk First Aid from an external HD startup disk--everything was ok!
Am I in the clear for an archive and install of Leopard? I have no problem trying anything else you might suggest!
    Thanks in advance

  • Kernel panic after installation of SL

i go inside Console Messages and search kernel so it shows the 4 times that i reported the panic but how can i find out what application caused the kernel panic in the first place? thank you very much for any kind of help

    Hi,
    Try restarting in Safe Mode
    Try resetting the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Disconnect any USB or FireWire devices and restart.
If none of the above helps, go here for help on how to Resolve Kernel Panics

  • Kernel Panic and Finder

I am not sure if the 2 are connected but they seem to be. My external hard drive apparently causes Kernel Panics which forces me to hard reboot the computer. So I can only assume that the external hard drive is somehow causing Finder to cause the kernel panic.
Also I've noticed that my computer seems to like re-indexing the entire hard drive over and over possibly after each kernel panic. This is the 3rd time since i've installed SL that my hard drive was reindexed from top to bottom. Normally this wouldn't be an issue, but the fact that it's CPU intensive, it heats up the MacBook Pro and we all know heat on computer components means shorter life span. The GPU also seems to heat up during the indexing which I find kind of weird?
So far my experience with Snow Leopard is not so great.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Check the manufacture web site for updated software for the external drive. Hopefully they have updated to 10.6

  • How to resolve a Kernal Panic in Leopard

I am pulling my hair out with my MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Laptop running with Leopard.
3 weeks ago my laptop had a Kernal Panic. I made sure I had all my files backed up to my external drive which is a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition with 1 TB/TO of memory. At that time, I was using CS4 Photoshop, InDesign, Microsoft Word, Acrobat and Mail. I had large size photos saved on my hard drive and small movie clips so I removed them and only have my current work files saved on the hard drive and past work files saved on my external drive and any files I don't want to loose for sure burned to CDs. I was able to rule out that it is not a hardware issue by running Disk Utility from my OS disk. Then I uninstalled CS4 Design Premium. My laptop worked great for a couple of days without it. I then reinstalled CS4 and started having the Kernal Panics again. I thought Photoshop and InDesign was causing the problem. I decided to uninstall CS4 again then just install Dreamweaver and Fireworks because I needed to use them for a project. My laptop was working great for a couple of days then I had another Kernal Panic. Also, I noticed if I had my external drive plugged in it would slow down my computer so I only connect it when I am ready to back up my files for the day. So now I think I need to reinstall my OS. Below is today's Kernal Panic report. Can anyone help me interpret this and tell me what I am doing wrong/suggest solutions to resolve this? I am also thinking of upgrading my hard drive since it only has 160GB of memory and from what I read I need at least 120GB free to run Photoshop alone. Also upgrade the RAM...currently have 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM? Thanks.

  • How do I interpret a kernel panic log?  (Here's one)

I apologize if there have been too many threads on kernel panics (and I'm adding to them). But Monday had my first one with my 2.5DP G5 POwerMac. I hadn't done anything unusual, only replying to an email, when the main screen greyed out, requesting that I restart using the power button.
Ten days ago, I installed Leopard. I also ran Disc Warrior, cleaned the preferences, etc. just to clean things up. I have the keyboard attached to the Belkin USB hub, instead of my usual direct connection to the box.
So, here is the log file as it reads. Can someone point out what the culprit may be? I have since run Apple Hardware Test, everything passed (running a total of 2.5GB Crucial memory). Thanks in advance.

    Hi Chet-
The first line after "backtrace" identifies the location, and describes the process involved at the time of the panic.
In this case, "com.apple.iokit.IOATABlockStorage" is indicated. This can be caused by a bad hard drive, internal or external, corrupt kernel in the OS BSD, or by a problem with the ATA controller on the logic board.
The panic occurred during data access "Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 1): 0x300 - Data access" which resulted in the CPU stumbling over some bad instruction occurring during the data access. "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task" indicates the problem to be/have occurred at the root level of the system.
Determining whether the problem is hardware or software based, is the problem, and can take quite a bit of effort.
To troubleshoot, the AHT was a good start. Would recommend running Rember just to get a second opinion on the RAM.
Of course, you need to disconnect all external devices, except keyboard, mouse and monitor. If you use an external hard drive, definitely disconnect it, run for a while, and see if the panic occurs again. If panics still occur, you need to look at the internal drive.
Running the computer in Safe Mode, or in a new user account, are ways of confirming whether or not the problem is software based. If panics occur in Safe mode, hardware is more than likely the culprit. Same goes with a new user account.
Since the Leopard install is relatively new, and, I assume that you installed on the old, original hard drive in your Mac, it may be worth while to zero the drive (one pass) and reinstall the OS. Especially if you installed over Tiger, or previous OS version, there could be a bit or two on the hard drive that isn't right, raising the potential for kernel panic. That said, a drive, even zeroed, can cause problems if failing.
Since it has only happened once, you may just want to take a "wait and see" approach. If a panic occurs in the near future, note the log (well done) and begin the trouble shooting.

  • I have kernel panic too! but for a different reason...

    hey all
my macbook has recently started experiencing kernel panic and i cant figure out why.
the first time it happened i used disk utility to verify the hard drive. DU said the hard drive needed to be repaired. i tried to boot up from the OSX 10.4 disk that came with my computer, but my computer wouldnt boot. so i booted up from disk warrior instead. i rebuilt the directory, ran the hardware check (no probs reported) and had DW check all files and folders. DW reported one corrupt .plist file. (i have looked at every single .plist file in the folder DW told me to but the corrupt file is nowhere to be found.) however, when i booted up normally and ran disk utility again DU said my hard drive was fine.
then kernel panic struck again. did a little research and found apple jack. ran all 5 of apple jack scripts and AJ also said all is well.
kernel panic again. used cleanapp to delete some old programs and empty caches. manually deleted about 80% of .plist files hoping that one of them would be the corrupt one. DW still reports one corrupt .plist file. so i decide to wipe the computer and do a clean install of 10.4. but when i try to open the OSX installer (from the disk that came with my computer) i get a message that says 10.4 cant be installed on this computer... that it isnt compatible. ***?
more research and this time decide on tech tools pro. run every test TTP has to offer and everything checks out fine.
so... now i dont know what to do. and my computer just had kernel panic again this morning. i pasted the report from it below. i dont know enough to tell if theres anything in there that explains whats wrong with my computer.
can anyone out there help me? in the very least can anyone tell me how to get my computer to recognize that it is compatible with 10.4 so i can erase everything and start again?
bah! this *****. thx in advance for any help you can give...

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • I get a memory stacking kernel panic when I startup Mac osx

Can only boot into safe mode... When booted normally a black and white screen comes up with the aPple logo and a bunch of kernel code errors. I saw a pic online of someone else getting the same error message and the problem was referred to as a memory stacking issue where the ram may be bad in the iMac... Does anyone know how to fix this error so I can do a normal restart and not have to boot into safe mode? I have tried to run the apple hardware test, but I no longer have the system CDs...

  • Kernel Panic when I connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3

Connect USB cable to use Rane Serato SL3 causes the following kernel panic. Used cable is an 5 meter USB-2 cable. This is 100% reproducable.
Yes yes I know Rane does not officially support Mavericks yet however if I use another (shorter) USB-2 cable with the Rane Serato SL3 it's no problem. I also have an older Rane Serato SL1 and this device works (USB-1) perfect with the same 5 meter USB-2 cable and the same short USB-2 cable.
I've taken the liberty to ask Rane what's going on and no succes there. They just don't seem to know.
So you smart people over here, what's going on?

  • Kernel panic when I connect seagate raid

I've updated my OS to 10.9.
Every time I even plug in my 2 drive, 3 TB Seagate for Mac RAID1 the system crashes and comes back up with (what appears to be) a kernel panic.
    Any insights?

Most likely, one of these is the culprit.

  • Help diagnosing kernel panics? 10.6.8 related

    Hello,
have been having this problem since i first tried to install 10.6 a few years ago.
thought it might be an issue relating to hp scanning driver .kext.
    thought it might be RAM.
    ram tests fine.
removed everything related to hp, which might relate to the hp scanning driver issue.
thought it might be a faulty SL install disk, but worked out ok on a macbook.
it seems only to happen with 10.6 and up, as i get the same problem when i installed 10.7 and 10.8 on other harddrives.
10.5.8 worked fine, with no problems or kernel panics in all the years it has been running.
if you have some insight that might help, i would appreciate it.
    thank you.
(this from another new snow leopard install)
