How to restart Adobe programs after installing Maverick on Apple ?

I just installed Maverick on my Apple Computers and now I cannot start the Adobe programs.
What can I do ?  Thanks in advance,  Jos FRANCOIS

Hi GautamBahl,
If I had known this I would not have activated Maverick.
I am not a professional user of the Adobe Programs ; I bought the collection in 2009 when I retired and enjoy to discover new things with it..
Please advice me what to do.
Thanks

  • How do I restore gid after installing Mavericks?

    Hi folks,
    quick question for you all.
Before installing Mavericks (I was running Mountain Lion), I was in the following situation:
I was user myname with uid=501, and
(besides other) I was member of a group called myname, which had gid=501.
    Now, after installing Mavericks,
I'm still user myname with uid=501,
    group myname still exists,
    but now has gid=20, and
I am no more member of it.
As a result, a few files / folders which were accessible before installation, are denied to me now (listing them in Terminal correctly displays them as assigned to gid=501, which unfortunately seems to be unknown to the system).
How do I fix this (apart from changing file permissions)? I presume I should just
take group myname and change its gid back from 20 to 501,
add back my membership to it.
But how do I go through first step? And, more importantly, am I at risk of doing something wrong?
(And why on earth would Mavericks do that?)
    Thanks in advance
    S

OK thanks I'll do that. I had actually upgraded to Lion, but when my data was read back to the new hard disk, obviously the upgrade wasn't. Thanks for your advice.

  • MacBook pro late 2011 (4G, i7) very slow to load any program after installing Mavericks

After instaling Mavericks, my Mac has slowed down so much, when I turn on my Mac it takes forever to load, and after it loaded, takes longer (then what it did before) to load any program.
    Any help please?
My specs: MacBook PRO 13" late 2011, 4Gb RAM, Intel i7 2.8Ghz  System most of the times shows 90-97% on idle (yet slow).

Check activity monitor, if a keener activity is taking a lot of CPU resources then  Try this link http://www.rdoxenham.com/?p=259
You will have to keep an eye on your temperature, but that's it.

Trying to send mail via Apple's email program (not iCloud off web page)  after Mavericks show pane "iCloud cannot connect to account iCloud". Entering p/w restores mail but why should this be happening?

While I am no fan of Best Buy and would not buy a lightbulb from them I doubt you issues have anything to do with your iMac and more to do with your lack of experience and simply getting bad advice. Judging by you post I suspect you have loaded your computer down with a lot of crapware and that  has caused it's problems. For example running antivirus apps on a Mac not only is a waste of time, it's a waste of money, system resources and will eventually create more problems that it solves. Please begin educating yourself on the subject by reading Thomas Reeds articles on the subject, Thomas is a frequent and knowledgeable contributor to these forums. You can find his webpage at http://www.reedcorner.net/tech-guides/
The good news is here are absolutely no, zero, zippo viruses for OS X. There are other types of malware available (for example trojans) however they differ greatly from viruses in that the use has to download and install them, whereas viruses do not work that way. OS X is not like MS Windows and is extremely secure.
My suggestion at this point would be to clean your computer of the crapware (including antivirus apps) however before doing so please download and install EtreCheck and post its report. Then we can see how your computer has been configured and begin to give you some advice on the next steps.

  • How long should reboot take after installing Mavericks?

All was well with my 2011 iMac until I decided to upgrade to Mavericks yesterday. I figured/hoped most of the early bugs must be squashed by now. The download took forever (but that's due to our slow bandwidth here) and the re-start has been going on 12+ hours. It's obviously hung up. I get gray screen with Apple logo; i have cursor control and no spinning ball. Occasiionally it still makes some sounds like it's processing. I've tried safe re-start, re-setting PRAM, ran disk utility to repair disk and all is supposedly OK. Thank God I have this MBP as my alternate device. Any advice as to next streps?? Chuck it all and restart from Time Machine?

If you haven't tried unplugging your peripherals, I'd do that, and try another boot in safe mode.
I wouldn't do a reinstall from TM, as that may reinstall whatever problem that you are having that is causing the installation to fail.
I'd bite the bullet, back up your documents, reformat (erase) the HD, and do a clean install.

  • How do I update iPhoto after installing Mavericks, I cannot access my iPhoto library?

I updated my OS to Mavericks from OS Lion and now my iPhoto is out of date and will not open so I can access my photos. I tried to update it from the apps store and it told me my Apple ID was not the one that had been registered or created when the Mac was bought.

Contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store Window. They're the only ones who can sort out account issues.

  • Apple Mail Not Showing Inbox Unread Count on Dock after installing Mavericks

After installing Mavericks, my Apple Mail (connected to my work's Gmail account) stopped showing the Inbox's unread count on the dock. I switched it to "all mailboxes" to see if that would make a difference, and the dock shows 7 unread emails when there are actually none. When I switch it back to "Inbox" unread counts, it shows nothing. I've waited 15 minutes after receiving an email to see if it will show an unread message in the dock, but it does not. Does anyone have a fix for this?
    Thank you!

Quit your mail entirely, then in terminal do:
    mv ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope* ~/Desktop
This moves all your "Envelope Index*" files to your desktop.  An alternative is deleting the files, but this allows you to keep them as a temporary back-up (you can delete them at-will later).  Also, you can move the files from Finder instead of Terminal, if you prefer.
After the files have been moved, re-open Mail
This should re-load all your email messages, updating/restoring the count
While this works, it does not explain the reason the count goes missing, nor does it ensure that the count won't go missing again in the future, but at least it's a temporary workaround.

For the fan issue, see if you can reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
That may help the restarts as well.

After installing Mavericks my iMac opens with the "rolling surf" desktop. I can then start my preferred desktop from a saved 'photo but when I retsart the iMac it reverts to "rolling surf". How can I get it to remember to open with MY choice rather than Apple's?

I did a little research on this, as I found some strange things with the .plist files.
It appears that Apple has changed the way that the plist files are handled, and there is now an extra step in the trashing-the-.plist-file fix:
    1. hold down the option key
    2. in the Go menu in the Finder, scroll down to Libary
    3. in Library, find Preferences
    4. in Preferences, find  com.apple.desktop.plist  and drag it to the trash.
    5. go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor
         1. Sort by Process Name and look for two processes named cfprefsd.
         2. Make sure you select the one that has your user account, not "root", listed as the User.
         3. Click the X up at the top left to kill that process
    5. restart
    6. this will generate a new .plist file, so you will have to reenter your preferences.
Sorry for the confusion. Could you try this and let us know-

  • After installing Maverick my computer, when restarted, only a gray screen appeared. My computer won't work at all...what happened?

After installing Maverick my computer shut down and when it restarted I couldn't get to the home screen. The monitor was grey with some dark grey shapes, it sounded like it was constantly running a program. My computer is sick!! HELP

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use either of the techniques in Steps 1b and 1c to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 10
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 11
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 12
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • App Store, Pages 5.0, Evernote, and other Apps will not fully function after installing Mavericks. What is the issue and how can this be solved?

Hello all, I could use some serious help on some major issues I have been having after installing Mavericks on my system (specs stated below). Never has a mac felt ever so rebelious and broken before in my lifelong period of using these systems. Anyway, after installing system 10.9, I had opened the mac App Store upon seeing that applications such as my iWork suite all had free updates. However, when I would attempt to navigate to the updates window, it would not respond to my various attempts. I then tried to get there by the system's menu bar and to my dismay, nothing would work when I clicked on it, not even the apple logo menu. I later quit the application using Command-Q and opened up the App Store by the apple menu option 'Software Update...' instead. Though it looked promising since the updates window did open, all update buttons or even '...more' info buttons were unresponsive.  These same problems persisted even after restarting my computer. I had also attempted to see if repairing definitions would help by booting from the recovery start-disk and using disk utility but the repairs it carried out apparently had nothing to do with my issue. Finally, I was able to update to the new iWorks suite (which interestingly did not replace the iWorks '09 suite) by following the notification that asked about allowing automatic updates which I did.
Once trying to use Pages 5.0, I soon noticed that all I could do was merely type in a new document and change various options via key commands. Neither the inspector or top bar menus would respond to any place I click. Similarly, Evernote only starts up on the last used note and merely allows me to scroll through it. The top bar menus, the note select pane, and even clicking inside the note to input text are all not functioning and uninfluenced by any mouse clicks.
I have noticed other apps that will not respond to any sort of input, but I still have not explored all applications to know what the issues of each may be. However there are some applications that work such as Safari, Google Chrome, dolphin, iWork '09 including Pages '09, and others.
I do hope that I can avoid rolling back my system, but in the meantime, it has been quite the obticle course to use my computer for all of my school purposes.
Any help is very much appreciated,
    Thank you!

  • After installing Maverick I can no longer highlight multiple emails the same way in orden out my mailbox I highlight a message, hold down my mouse and drag my cursor to highlight more messages. I click "delete" & they go to trash. How do I do this again?

After installing Maverick on my 2011 MacBookPro I can no longer highlight multiple emails in the same manner.  To clean out my Inbox I highlighted a message, held my mouse down & dragged my cursor down through all the messages I wanted to delete (or move to another mailbox, or other functions) highlighting as many messages as I wanted. I then clicked "delete" & they went to trash.  Such a great way to clean out a lot of messages at once.  Can I and/or how do I do this again?  Or is this something Maverick has eliminated?  I also hate that "Notes" is no longer on the Mail page, but this is not as important.  Help!!

Put differenltly, if I can drag select multiple items and objects on my desktop, which I can, using my Kensington Track Ball (which has an enabled updated software driver in place, so I don't think there's a problem there), why can't I click-drag-multipleselect emails in mail like I have *always* been able to? Really, what is the problem here? Why is that no longer possibler? I'm not a coder, but I can't believe this isn't fixable. Here, Apple should be ashamed of itself, regardless of the fact that there's an easy work around. When I have to alter the way I have been doing something for years and have to waste time learning something new and complaining about it -- like right now! -- and there's no good technical reason, and I bet there isn't, then Apple has simply failed.

If you can download the ML installer you can make a bootable install media by using:
    http://liondiskmaker.com/
If your Mini came with ML you can also boot to Internet Recovery
OS X: About OS X Recovery
and it will install ML. Make sure you boot to Internet Recovery and not the Recovery Partition. If to the partition you will only get Mavericks.

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.
