How to restart migration assistant

Friends,
I just received an imac i7. I want to transfer files and programs from my imac 24 2.8 intel machine by migration assistant. I tried last night, but the system appeared to freeze about 3/4 of the way through. Is there a way to restart migration assistant to complete the job or do I have to do it all over again?
Would transferring from a TM backup be better? My TM is USB 2.0, and I figured that would be too slow.
Thanks!
Steve

Barry,
I think I figured out the problem. When I tried to migrate overnight, I didn't change my new machine's power saver feature, so I think the HD went to sleep after an hour (although you would think the migration activity would keep it awake). In any event, I'm transferring from a TM disk today; if I don't like the result, I'll try migrating via firewire with the settings changed.
Thanks for your help.
Steve

  • How long should migration assistant take to inspect computer for files to transfer

just purchased a mac book pro. I'm attempting to migrate my pc files to the mac. I've successfully installed migration assistant on my pc.
Migration assistant on the mac has been " inspecting your computer" for over 12 hours. Is this normal? I'm hesitant to turn it off in case it will finish eventually

If you mean it's been fifteen minutes and nothing has happened then most likely it's stuck. What are you migrating from and to?

  • Can someone tell me how to access Migration Assistant on an IPad Air?

I have tried following instructions on how to access Migration Assistant but so far I'm stumped.  Could someone walk me thru the process?  Thanks

Finder is the name of an application on Macintosh computers.  It does not exist on an iPad.  Finder is very much like Windows Explorer in Windows.  iPad does not really feature a file system that would take advantage of Finder.  In fact, it does not really feature a file system at all.  It is more dependent on applications.
Here is the iPad User Guide:

Migration Assistant and Finder both apply to Macintosh computers, and not iPads.

  • How to use migration assistant without creating dual user accounts

I want to use migration assistant to transfer apps, software & files on my macbook pro to my new macbook air. How can I do this without creating two user accounts for myself on the m-book air -- my account from the m-book pro & the one that the air makes me create as soon as I do start-up? Can I just use the same name & password for both? or will that make things go badly awry?
    Thanks!

If you have not booted the MBA for the first time and gone through the Setup Assistant, then I would use the Setup Assistant to make the transfer before you even create another user account. However, if you've already created the new user account on the MBA, then create a new admine one with a different username than the account you will migrate. Log into this new account, delete the first account you made, then use Migration Assistant to transfer your account from the MBP.

  • How to use Migration Assistant from OS 10.7.5 mac to new mac Maverick?

Got a new imac.  I'm trying to use Migration assistant from my non-Maverick imac to the new one.  I'm told that I have to update my former mac, but it's too old to update to Maverick.
So, how can I use Migration Assitant to transfer files?
    Thank you.

The easiest method is to use the Time Machine backup from your old computer and connect it to the new machine. Then launch Migration Assistant on the new machine and use the TM backup HD to migrate to the new machine. DO NOT do this wirelessly, your profile indicates you have a Time Capsule, if you use that for your TM backup then connect it via eithernet to  your new iMac to do the migration.

  • How long for Migration Assistant to calculate Time Machine backup file size

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro to replace one that will not start up. Consequently I am trying to migrate my user account, files and applications from a Time Machine back up - but it seems to be taking an age to calculate the Applications and "other files" sizes.
How long should I be looking at for 145GB's worth of data to be recognised by Migration Assistant?
If there is a problem with the migration, can I replace the User and Applications folders on the new MBP with those from the Time Machine back up?

it's quite safe to assume that the Migration process is stuck. there is no sense in waiting any longer. stop the migration and see what got transferred. did the home folder get transferred? you can restore just the home folder using TM and reinstall applications but that has to be done correctly. DO NOT try to copy anything from TM backups using finder.
First, make sure that your current user has different short name than the user you are trying to migrate. then control-click on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you browse TM backups. select the folder /users/username there. click on the "gears" action button in the toolbar and select 'restore to...". select to restore to /users on your main drive. you'll have to enter your admin password to do it. once the copy is complete, go to system preferences->accounts and create a new account with the same short name and password as the user you are restoring. it will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say yes.

  • How to use migration assistant when the same user account name is on both computers

I want to migrate all my info from my MacBook to my new (to me) MacBook Pro.  I've already set up a user account on the new MBP that has the same name as the user account on the MacBook that I want to migrate.

    Snags40 wrote:
In both cases the UID for my primary User Account is 507
507?  That's odd; usually the first one created is 501, then 502, etc.  Could you have gone through 6 accounts?
Since I've migrated thru several Macs to get to the current state on the old MacBook, I suspect the UID has changed.
That could explain some of it, if you used Migration Assistant instead of Setup Assistant.  It would have taken a lot of migrations and user accounts to get to 507, I'd think.
I still have the Powerbook that preceded the MacBook.  How can I determine the UID on 10.4.11?  The right click on the Account name in User Accounts doesn't show that value.  I'd like to see if UID has changed going from 10.4 to 10.5.
Good question.  I skipped Tiger, and don't recall earlier versions, but this article may help:  http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20051022175850619&query=change%252BU ID

  • How smart is migration assistant

If I replace my old 17" PB with a new Macbook Pro, how smart is the migration assistant? If I use it migrate my complete old system to the new machine, will it overwrite the iLife06 (for example) that comes with the new machine, with my current old iLife version? Will there be issues migrating from PPC to Intel-based?
Should I only migrate the user directory instead?
About the only thing that's keeping me from hitting the 'submit order' button is the worrying about how much hassle it will be to go from one machine to the other. :-/

See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773, for starters. Note, the article hasn't been updated since February. I don't have one, so I can't say. However, you can do a search in these forums for migration AND Intel and see what pops up.

  • How To Cancel Migration Assistant

I have an early Intel 17" iMac with OSX 10.4 and I just purchased a new 21.5" iMac with OSX 10.6. Both computers were connected to my network using CAT5 cables (not wirelessly).
About 90 percent of the way through the migration, something went wrong. I got a message the connection was lost to the old iMac. After clicking "Continue" a few times, I finally clicked "Cancel." That was about an hour ago and the new iMac is still trying to cancel the migration. It says "Less than a minute remaining" and has said that since it started canceling.
I forced the new iMac to shut down and restarted it. Guess what? I'm right back at the same place - the computer is trying to cancel the migration.
    WHAT CAN I DO?

Well I'm no expert ; but I guess your options would be wait it out, some times canceling some thing takes longer then a few minutes. I know when I run migration assistant with time machine it displays "less then a minute remaining" for much longer then a minute. I've had it take hours.
or boot to the install disk, erase the hard drive, and then install the os. Witch would let you run the migration assistant again, but after words you would want to install ilife.
or you could contact apple tech support. http://www.apple.com/support/contact/ see what they say.

  • How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

  • How long  should Migration Assistant take to find documents?

I understand that the migration itself could take several hours over wifi (I am transferring from a PC to a new Mac.  But Migration Assistant has been "searching Documents" for app. 3 hours.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

The estimates given may be about right, even if the computers sit side-by-side, and have Ethernet cable; the numbers add up depending on transfer speeds, hard disk drive spin-rate and read-write speed, bus speed, RAM speed, and some suggest between 1GB per second and up (or down) depending on the connections.
You should also look into obtaining more than one device for a suitable archive, system backup, clone, and another external drive suitable for a complete backup of your system that is not a timemachine. And maybe a UPS with power filtering, and extra runtime should you be caught with your electrical utility mains down...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Imac won't restart, migration assistant

I just bought an iMac. Last night I started transferring my files, etc. from my PowerBook. When I woke up this morning, it was stuck at the same estimated time and had an error prompt . . . something about losing it's connection with the PowerBook. After several unsuccessful attempts of finishing the migration, it asked if I wanted to cancel migration. So I cancelled. Then it was stuck on cancelling and never became un-stuck. Finally, I decided to restart. When it restarts, it is stuck on the spinning wheel. Sometimes the new voice over command info begins to play.
    Seems eternally stuck.
    My specs:
    brand new iMac
    21.5"
    2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with 6MB on-chip shared L3 cache
OSX Lion -  I selected 10.7.2 but I don't actually know for sure as I can no longer access my iMac.

You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support, it's time to use it. The number is in your owners manual. Also when starting any new Mac it starts with Setup Assistant, this is the best opportunity to migrate from your old Mac.  Please look over Lion Setup Assistant tips.
