How to restore a backed up iTunes library from discs?

I had backed up my iTunes library a while ago (more than a couple years) on CDs as Apple "demanded" at the time.  Now I find that I need to restore my library to iTunes on the computer, and lo and behold, restoration doesn't work in the same manner anymore.  Apparently, the process used to be quite simple; you inserted the discs, iTunes would ask if you wanted to restore the backup to the library and voila, the library was restored.   I'm not exaggerating when I write that I have been looking for a solution for hours and have yet to find any instructions to remedy this problem.  Any help (specific instructions) would be greatly appreciated.
Using Windows XP, Dell, and iTunes 11.4.0.18
Thanks.

This is what I always do (and believe me, it's been done many times):
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Locate the current iTunes library (this assumes that you have used iTunes since your old lib got damaged). You can use find to do this, the current lib will be the one that's been modified last (so if you last used iTunes on September 22nd and quit afterwards, the library should show that it's been modified 22/9).
3. It'll probably be named just as 'iTunes library.xxx' (can't remember the file ending now). Now, back up the backed up library (you can never be too sure) and when done, change its name to be identical to your current, pathetically small library.
4. Move the old library to the folder where the new one is. The system will ask whether you want to replace the the existing library with the same name, and of course you will want to.
5. Start iTunes anew and you should have your old library back.

Some of us have our enture itunes library backed up on CD/DVD - what a waste of time and effort as now presumably you can't use these discs to restore itunes on a new computer! WHY NOT APPLE?
Very unimpressed with itunes 10.5/ios5 - wifi tracking apps have been removed from the store (and won't function in ios5), it's impossible to sync photos (I have spent a whole day trying to sync my iphone 3GS with itines 10.5) to no avail and now, no CD backup facility.
I have never had problems with apple before - I was thinking of upgrading my whole system from PC to Mac but now I am doubtful - if this is typical of apple software, I will stay with windows!

  • How do i restory my entire itunes library from the hard drive of a new laptop to itunes?

I recently got a new laptop and would like to transfer my itunes from the old to the new. I backed up the itunes library to an external hard drive, and have transferred it to the hard drive of the new laptop (I haven't deleted the library from the old laptop). I am operating on windows. I am now stuck and can't seem to restore my entire itunes library to itunes. The items purchased from the itunes store are in the library on the new laptop, but the rest of my music is not. How do I restore it to my itunes library? I have tried opening itunes while holding down shift and selecting "choose library" option, but when I select the itunes folder, it doesn't appear in the library.
    help?!

    Hello ggjsa,
Congratulations on your new laptop!  I understand that you have copied your old iTunes Library to your new computer, but you are still not seeing the music.  I recommend reviewing Part 5 in the section titled "External drive" in the following article:

If you are still having trouble transferring the library using this method, you may want to try using the Home Sharing method in the article.

  • Restoring ITunes Library from disc, Computer says not enough space on C:?

    Hi everybody.
I recently bought a new laptop. I currently have more than 200GB free.
I backed up my ITUNES library from my old computer using ITUNES' backup feature (it made me 6 DVDs). Upon trying to restore them onto the new computer, it gets 4 discs in and ITUNES tells me there is no more space on the C: drive. Obviously, this isn't the case. Any ideas? Is this a bug in ITUNES?

If that prevents you from restoring as new, and then manually syncing then fine.
It seems to me the size of the backup file may well not correspond to the amount of storage occupied on the iPhone.  There can be pointers, indirect references, etc.

  • How can I move an existing iTunes library from a Dell PC (which uses Windows Vista) to a MacBook Pro?  I have tried to copy the library from the PC onto a memory stick but cannot move from the stick onto the MacBook Pro.

I have tried to copy my iTunes library from my old (2008) Dell PC to a 32 GB memory stick and then copy it from the stick to the iTunes library in the new MacBook Pro which I purchased recently from a reputable dealer which resells refurbished Macs, (lease returns, etc).  The dealer was Computer Trends store in Saskatoon.  They told me how to move my existing iTunes libary from the PC to the Mac but I cannot seem to achieve that objective.  The Mac does not seem to recognize the memory stick.  I thought the Mac would recognize that the memory stick held iTunes files and would then transfer them without prompting to its own iTunes libary.  It did not do so.  I have therefore tried to find the command sequence within iTunes (on the Mac) for moving the material from the memory stick to the iTunes library.  Cannot find those commands.  Does anybody know where to find such commands.  I have to say, I am really disappointed that such a simple function would prove to be beyond my capabilities.  I thought the Mac was supposed to be easier than a PC.  !!!  Oh well, I am hoping this forum will help !!!

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
So, you can see your whole iTunes folder on the memory stick after copying from the PC?

  • Backing Up iTunes Library to Disc

i recently tried backing up my Entire iTunes Library to disc, but i left the computer and it went to Sleep during the backup process, and the disc was ejected. now each time i try to backup, i get an error message saying the "burning was unsuccessful". i tried restarting the computer and iTunes, but nothing is allowing me to complete the backup. what can i do?

Depends on the disk you use. With a dvd it takes about 4.7 gig to fill one. So that would be about seven disc. I always have a back up on disk and one on my external hard drive.

  • How do I get back to iTunes 8 from 9 ?

    Hi
    I have 2 Macintosh mashines.
I dislike Safari 4, so I'm using the 3 version.
Now I just have installed iTunes 9 and when I wanted to go to iTunes Store I was asked to upgrade my Safari to version 4, which I still do not want to do.
How do I get back to iTunes version 8 ?
(Fortunately I still have iTunes version 8 on my other Mac and I mange to get in contact with iTunes Store from iTunes v.8 – so I know it is still possible to talk to iTunes Store from iTunes 8)

I am having the same problem. I think my computer's too slow for iTunes 9.

  • How do I get back my Itunes library after it suddenly disappeared?

Looked at my ITunes library last week to try and make a new playlist but all my years of music/videos etc has disappeared without me doing anything? I have had very bad luck with Time Machine as well and realised not long ago that for 4 years it has only been backing up 'Desktop' and not the whole computer. I backed up all my photos and docs on various DVD's and CD's once I realised but I cant see that I backed up my Itunes library. I am only hoping that on the 'Desktop' external hard drive back ups that I can find it again? If it is on there, how do I get it off as I have heard that you can not retrieve certain items from an external hard drive especially with Time machine although I have never needed to before. Do you think all my songs etc have gone forever now??....Help!!
Im not even sure what version of I Tunes it was. I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 on a 2008 Macbook

If you didn't knowingly change libraries then it is more likely that your original library file become corrupted and was replaced with an blank copy. It should be possible to restore your previous data as follows.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library as iTunes Library (Corrupt) and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
The images are from a Windows system but the principle is just the same... Depending on when you initially installed iTunes the library files may, or may not, end with a .itl extension. Be consistent with the file that you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

  • How do I restore a backed up music library from another drive

I have had to move many thousands of music tracks from an old MacPro  to a new Mac Mini.  I transfered the whole music folder to a NAS before I did this and while the MacMini seems to have setup an iTunes library with some of the music a lot is not appearing. I have bought some more tracks and backed up CDs since this move onto the new libaray but now I want to restore all the missing tracks which are sitting on the NAS. How do I do this without ending up with hundreds of multiple copies of the tracks taht are on the Mini??? The Organise Library tool might copy the tracks across but it'll almost certainly make duplicates of exisiting tracks...

The music is still on my ipod. Do i need to plug my ipod in or will that erase all my music on my ipod?! Stressing out! Please help!

  • How can I get back my itunes library settings?

My dad recently created a new profile and my library got lost with the old profile. I was able to move all my music from the old profile to my new library but i lost all my settings. I have the music but it doesn't show any of my ratings for any songs, no play counts, the date added is wrong, no playlists, and I had selected specific songs I wanted on my ipod but now it has all of them selected again. I still have all my old settings on my nano if I can get them off there somehow. If anyone knows how i can get my settings back please help.

It sounds to me like the original iTunes Library file got replaced. If so, transferring from the nano will be your only possibility. If you search VersionTracker for "iPod", you'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your playlists from your iPod back to your Mac. One or more of those utilities might also be able to transfer playcounts and ratings.
