How to restore a TM backup after HDD replacement?

Hi everybody,
The HDD in my Macbook pro failed, and I am replacing it
MBP July 2011; HDD 500GB 7200 rpm; Mountain Lion.
I have recent Time Machine backups. Now what´s the proper way to restore the backup.
Should I boot up with the not yet formatted new HD and with the TM disk connected
using some key combo?
Or should I boot from the Mountain Lion Install CD and then be able to
format and select the backup drive?
Thanks for reading!
Rob

Thanks Eric,
After inserting the original DVD I installed OSX and after reboot I had a working computer.
There was no opportunity to restore the TM backup. however when I rebooted from the
DVD again I saw that possibility from a menu of the install utility.
I ran through the restore over night (8 hours) and when I woke up, I had my computer back!
Thanks for helping me out.
Cheers, Rob

  • How to restore using increment backup after full backup restore in RMAN?

    Hi All,
We have a files of full backup of database after turning on the Archive log.
And after that, daily incremental backup is taken.
Now, i want to restore the the database into a new machine using both files of full and incremental backups. Can anybody give me script for restore of full backup and after that restore of incremental backup?
    Thanks,
    Praveen.

    Praveen,
    >>
In my case, i have 2 sets of backups. One is full backup and other is incremental backup. In order to keep the restored database upto date, i need to restore the full backup and then restore incremental backup. Now, i got any idea how to restore using full backup. My doubt is how to update the restored database with incremental backup also?
    >>
Restore always looks for level 0 backup, not the incremental backups.
Incremental backups comes in picture during recovery.
During Recovery, Oracle looks for incremental backups, if exists, it will do the recovery with the incremental backups, if no incremental backups available, then, it will look for archived logs.
Therefore, incremental backups never used during restore, they are used only during the recovery.

  • How can I restore from icloud backup after activating replacement phone as new

I activated a replacement iphone 5. When I tried to restore from my iCloud backup, it said the os of the backup was not compatible with the replacement phone os so I chose the option to activate as a new phone. (Old phone was on 7 - replacement phone was sent to me with an earlier os).
Is there any way to restore my settings from my last iCloud backup?

Yeah - guess you're right. It just took me hours to figure out what to do/not do. New to iphones and never had to restore before. Maybe Apple could at least include the very simple instructions wjosten  posted. Would have saved me a lot of stress and time....
    Apple does provide instructions.
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
Note that iTunes and iOS do not support installing backups of newer versions of iOS onto devices using earlier versions of iOS.
iOS: Unable to restore from backup of a newer device
    Symptoms
When restoring an iOS backup to a iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that is not using the latest version of iOS, you may see the following behavior:
You cannot see or select the most recent backup from the list of available backups in iTunes or iCloud.
iTunes displays the alert "The backup [name] cannot be restored to this [iOS device] because the software on the [iOS device] is too old."
iTunes displays the alert "No backups available."
    Resolution
Update your device to the latest version of iOS to be able to restore the backup.

  • How to restore from time machine after HDD upgrade on macbook pro?

    Hi,
I have recently bought a WD 2.5 inch SATA 750GB 7200RPM 16GB HDD and plan to use it on my macbook pro 13 inch 2.4ghz early 2011. I will leave the pysical installation part to Apple Service. I have my Time Machine backup on an external hard disk. So, once I get the upgraded macbook, what are the steps I should follow for a complete Time Machine restore? (Including the formatting on the new HDD).
One more question; when I transfer my applications to the new HDD will Time Machine "remember" their activation codes and license information ?
    Thanks a lot.

    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
This has all the instructions for a complete restore, including how to format the disk. Pondini's site probably has anything else you want to know too.
    Good luck!

  • How to backup after HDD replacement

I am planning to replace my internal HDD from my MBP 15.4" 2.4Ghz. I would like to use my Time Machine backup to restore the system to my laptop. What are the steps I should take once I have formatted the new internal HDD?

Correct. I did this about a month ago and was impressed with how clear and easy the instructions were.
I should add: It is a good idea to have a second backup in case your TM drive fails. I know it seems unlikely but I read a thread here just today about how somebody's main drive and backup drive died within hours of each other and he lost a lot of data that wasn't on his third backup.

  • How to restore an iPhoto Library after hdd change?

    Hi all!
I just had my old 120gig hdd changed on my MBP to a 500 one and all my files have been restored on there apart of my iPhoto library under Lion.
I also had a backup done on time machine but unable to find the file of the library to restore it to iPhoto.
What can I do to find my pics back in iPhoto? Are they lost for ever?
Thx a lot in advance for your answers!

Well I've been backing up my computer with TM for about 2 years now every few months now.
About a year ago my motherboard didn't want to do it's job anymore so got it changed...restored the computer then with TM but somehow got a prob doing that for some weird 'user' problem, been told that was normal since the TM could not recognize the new motherboard.
Now when I enter TM i cant find this long sought after iphoto library file, but when i go into my TM 'manually' through finder, i see under 'users' 2 different users which are both mine, one with my first name, the other one with firstname followed by familiy name.
I then found out that the library was in only 1 of those 'users', it also shows 35gig, and if i double click it to open it says it is a TM backup and cant open it just like that, so here i am back to square 1 trying to find a file not appearing in TM...

  • How to restore a Macbook Pro after hdd failure?

    Hi!
My girlfriend posted a question about her MB Pro mid 2012 which apparently had a HDD failure; she was instructed to take a TimeMachine backup and switch a new HDD/SDD to replace it. Well, I started the TimeMachine copy, but unfortunately the computer crashed; now the computer starts, but keeps spinning the rainbow wheel while trying to log in. Any advice on how to proceed? Can the data be recovered? Can I do it somehow and if I wanted to change the SDD which she bought, how do I boot the computer without TimeMachine backup? Can it be done?
Normally this woudn't be such a huge problem, but unfortunately she needs to read for an exam AND write an academic text. Of course I could lend her my MB but unfortunately I have to do the same....
Solutions? Sorry couldn't find answers so I thought it easiest to just ask plain out straight.

So as a continuation, since she keeps asking, can I go ahead and just download the Yosemite from Apple Store and install it on the new SSD or will it fudge up the laptop again? The things I heard had something to do with kext or TRIM or something like that. Now keep in mind I'm no nerd, so I'm not up to full speed on how SSD and Yosemite work together.
It depends upon the SSD.  Here are a couple of excerpts by a trusted colleague of mine in a conversation regarding SSDs and other storage devices.  (I do not have an SSD)
    Also read this:
    http://blog.macsales.com/21641-with-an-owc-ssd-theres-no-need-for-trim
Bottom line is if the SSD does not need trim, then install Yosemite.  If it does, do not install Yosemite.
    Ciao.

  • Reconnect to TM backup after HDD replacement?

I have just got my iMac back after a warranty repair that included a replacement of the HDD. They migrated all of my applications and data from the old HDD to the new one and everything seems to be fine. However, TM wants to doesn't recognise the existing backup file and wants to do a full "first time" backup (which is a problem anyway as there isn't sufficient space on my Time Capsule).
Does anyone know whether it is possible / how to get TM to recognise the existing backup as relating to this machine?
I just worried about deleting the existing backup only to discover there is a file missing that I might have been able to restore from the "old" TM backup.
    Thanks, Brian

TM knows it's the same Mac; the problem is, it isn't the same internal HD. And no, there's no practical way to fool it into thinking it is.
If your TC isn't well over twice the size of the data on your internal HD, your only choices are to erase the TC's internal HD, or get another external HD.
You can connect a USB drive to your Time Capsule and back up to it (it will be a new backup; the old one can't be "continued" onto a different drive); or you can "archive" the TC's current contents to it, then erase the TC's internal HD and let Time Machine start over.
See the green box in #Q3 of the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Capsule+ forum, for instructions on doing the "archive".

    Hi ivmikh,
    Welcome to Sony Community!
If you failed to create your own Vaio Recovery Disc then yes, you have to purchase one to install the original version of operating system and the drivers and software that came with the computer.  Another option is to buy a retail version of operating system and then download the drivers and software from our website.
By the way, thank you for reporting this website that doesn't work, i will forward this to the proper department.

  • How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?

How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?
We have 817 EE on NT and one developer created a lot of procedures, functions and vews. DB was not backuped and archived and export has not been done - our fault and we understand it. Sorry for this.
Ok, now the story: another developer dropped this db user and we lost everything: procedures, functions and vews. The new user with trhe same name was created and new schema was imported in this user, but all old objects are lost. We don't have export and backup and archive log files.
Question: may we can restore this lost stuff from some other sources. We are looking for lost codes, not data. May be we can use redo logs or shared pool or any other things. Any idea will be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Victor
    [email protected]

The switch has occurred after user was dropped, the data has been overwritten and there is be no way to use redo log files.
I would like to explore another opportunity. Is possible to use Shared Pool or any Data Dictionary internal information to restore texts of the lost SQL and PL/SQL scripts executed in this DB before user was dropped? Not too many scripts are executed in this DB and the lost ones may still be in stack. I remember that Shared Pool (cash) should keep last executed scripts in order to improve performance. They probably are kept in some special format. Can we restore these scripts? Of course they also might be pushed out by Import that had been done after user was dropped.
    Thanks for your help,
    Victor

  • Anyway to restore from iCloud backup after initial setup?

I purchased a new 5s today - my old 4s was backed up to iCloud - the store moved my contacts but I guess they skipped the cloud restore part so I don't have any of my apps - is there anyway to restore from cloud backup after initial setup?  I think I can reset it but not sure how to do it and I'm afraid of what it will delete if I reset - please help - I could reload my apps but it won't keep my data right? Thanks

You should check to make sure that your contacts/information is in your iCloud by logging into iCloud.com. You can also plug your device into iTunes and check when the most recent iCloud backup was before restoring from it.
If your information is there, then you can go through the activation process again pretty easily by going into Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
Then you can just restore from your iCloud backup.

You don't even have to do to an erase all content and settings.
Just connect the iPad to iTunes. Once it appears on the left, right click on it and select restore from backup. It's that easy.

I would say yes. I once had the same problem (iPhone 5, IOS 7) and first restored to factory settings and after that from iCloud backup.
    It worked very well.

    Hi,
Please refer section Restoring Oracle Database of this useful document ["HP Data protector Integration Guide for Oracle and SAP"|http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00751982/c00751982.pdf] to get more detailed information.
You can restore Oracle DB directly on the Database. The Oracle Agent installed at Oracle DB host will take the whole responsibilities of DB Restore or You can dump it to other location and you can manually Restore Oracle DB.
