How to restore and erase a "mac osx extended" with disk utility?

hello, I exedently sepret my disks the first one name is: Macintosh HD
and the secound one name is backup (I chose the name).
I want to merge them together how should I do it?
(macbook air 11" osx mavericks)
I teyed first restore the scound one and it didn't worked here is a screen shut of it:

Let me make sure i undestand:
1. you partitioned your internal hard drive into two partitions
2. you now want to combine them together
Correct?
If so, i believe you need to get an external hard drivea dn copy everythiong there - including a COOTABLE clone of your startup drive.
Then boot from external, and use disk utility to partiton your drive as (1) partition, and format it (HFS+ Journaled).  Then clone back your main info and anything that was on "backup".

How can I delete everything from my Time Capsule?
Disk Utility would be used for an internal hard drive on your Mac, or for a drive that was attached directly using USB or FireWire.
The Time Capsule is a network drive. Disk Utility cannot be used for this type of drive.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
    Click the Disks icon
Click the Disks tab below the icon
    Click Erase
The "Quick Erase" option will only take a minute or so. This would be fine if you plan to keep the Time Capsule yourself.
If you plan to sell the Time Capsule, you would want to use a more secure erase, like "Zero Out", which will likely take 4-6 hours or so since everything on the drive will be replaced with zeros.

  • How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive?

How do you know what version Mac OSX is on ANOTHER drive without starting that drive
and seeing the system profiler? In fact, because the drive wont start up, Now I am wondering if it is pre-intel. ? CMD-I doesn't do it. Thanks

Why mess with this? Well, I got the HDDs and the enclosure from my previous PPC, so I'd like to make use of it all without $pending again.
I don't see any problems with using the card and drives on your new Mac. Hardware is too pricey to just leave behind if you can't help it. With the new drivers I suspect you'll be able to use your drives, I just don't think you'll be able to boot from them if the interface card requires drivers. They should still be very fast storage devices, and probably reliable due to the ongoing support the vendor has provided.
I went through the same type of issue when I bought my Dual G4 1.42 Tower (upgraded from a Quadra 840AV ). Several of my devices were SCSI (I was into SCSI Wide/Fast drive arrays at the time for video capture), and I was able to use an Adaptec card for scanning for several years with Jaguar and Panther. I'd spent quite a bit of cash to ensure high quality and performance and didn't want to loose all of the investment. Eventually the SATA hard drives and other USB and Firewire replacements became so cheap and performance improved enough that loosing SCSI with Tiger was not a big deal. I do think I should get about 5 years of hardware compatibility with most products and I keep older Mac's around for dedicated services as long as they aren't a costly maintenance issue.

  • Can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd

can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd

You will need either an Ethernet or Wifi Connection to the Internet - USB Mobile device is not supported.
If you already have Lion installed you can boot to Recovery with Command R and use the Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD and then reinstall the OS from the Mac OS X Utilities.
You will need the Apple Id used for purchase if the Mac did not ship with Lion installed originally.
If you want to repartition the HDD you can use the Recovery Disk Assistant to make a recovery USB drive

If the machine is a 2011 build or later you might be able to boot to Internet Recovery with Command Option R

Have you tried resetting your device: Hold down the Home and Power buttons at the same time and continue to hold them down until the Apple appears (up to 30 seconds). Once the "Slide to Unlock" screen redisplays, see if your issue is resolved.

Thanks; however, I was really referring to this: if it is preinstalled on a Mac, I believe the license is for that computer only (unlike an MAS purchased version which can be used on any Mac owned). Has that requirement changed?
At this moment, that's correct. The OS X license included with a Mac can only be used with that Mac. However, in the case the OP has purchased OS X Mountain Lion in the past, this may change

Have you tried double-clicking on the file? If so what happened?
I believe you have a Word Perfect document, so you would need an application that can open such files. You might try the free Libre Office.

  • Why can I just Install my system as Mac OSX Extended

    Hi,
yes like my thread says, why can I just choose the option Mac OSX Extended (case-sensitive) when I want to reinstall Leopard? Or is the Option somewhere esle and I can't find it? Because when I want to choose, they are two options, both options are Mac Osx Extended, the other is with an extra option, but I forgot what it was.
I don't want Mac OSX Extended because some games or Apps won't work with it like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare or Age of Empires 2.
    Thank you.

If you mean "why can't I" ... it depends how you're trying to reinstall Leopard. You can only choose the format of the drive when you're doing a clean install (erase and install) which wipes your drive. If you're choosing Install (upgrade from an earlier version) or Archive and Install, you won't get the option to reformat the drive.
If you are indeed trying to clean install, try running Disk Utility from the installation disk first (before you go through the install screens, go to the Utilities menu and run Disk Utility). From there, you can erase and reformat your drive to the format you need ... the options you will have are Mac OS Extended, with or without case-sensitivity and journalling. Hope one of those is the one you want - you didn't mention which you'd prefer.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Cant restore my macbook with Disk utility and my .dmg image

My macbook would not boot anymore. Stuck on gray screen with apple logo, spinning wheel and a loading bar for a while after shutting off.
I was able to get to Disk Utility in the recovery mode and, after a while, was able to make an image of my filesin an attempt to back them up.
The .dmg was put on an external and i checked it on my imac, i could open the .dmg file and browse all my files from my macbook, so those are safe!
After that i tried to wipe the SSD of my macbook and put the image back but that didn't work, also some resource is busy errors.
After trying this a few times without succes i figured i'd try to do a clean install. This worked.
My macbook air is working again but if Iuse Disk Utility in the recovery now and try and restore my image (.dmg file) it gives me Restore Failure; An error (-16) occured (resource busy) as well. I also tried to copy the dmg onto my macbook and run disc utility when booted into OSX. I open up the back up .dmg with Disk utility, then i go to my macbooks partition (Macontiosh HD) and use that as a destination and drag the mounted image as the source as shown on the image below. Am I doing something wrong here?
Doing this i get an error as well: (-119,930,878) Resource busy as you can see.
What can i do to get my image back on my macbook? Any 3rd party software?
I considered just transferring the files after opening the .dmg file but this works only for documents and not for programs and settings of the default apps.
I've looked all over the Internet and it seems more people have had this error but then with making the image, they also suggest unmounting the destination disk before trying to restore but my destination is Macintosh HD, i cant really unmount that can i?
    Thanks in advance!

To make a clone, in the future you need to use a program like superduper or carbon copy cloner.
Either program makes an identical clone while preserving certain system files and marking/indicating to OS X that the clone is bootable.
Using Disk Utility to make a DMG was a good idea, but this will not yield a bootable image.
If Disk Utility could do a 1:1 copy of everything, then people would be using it to rip/duplicate DVDs.
But Disk Utility does not (it leaves out certain invisible/system files), hence it cannot duplicate/clone a hard drive or DVD.

  • Mac Osx strart-up disk has no more application memory

I get this message on occasion now. The Message, "Your Mac OSX start up disk has no more space available for application memory".
    I have a 1 TB HD ,799GB Available, 220GB Used. Running 10.6.2 OSX.
I have tried Onyx, repairing permissions in the disc utility, and the problem goes a way for a while but will pop up if I start running multiple apps.Rebooting seems to cure this problem for a while.
    Looking for answers.
    thanks,
*I did try the suggestion from another user below. Did not help*
+Try booting fron your install disc. The startup disk may need repairs.+
+Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.+
+Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.+
+Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.+
+Select First Aid in the Main panel.+
+(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)+
+Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.+
+If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.+
+If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.+
+When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.+
+Select your start up disk and click Restart+
+While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space+
+If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode+

Had same issue on customer's new iMac 24" this morning. Memory processes on activity monitor showed only 130.6 MB free out of 4GB physical with only Safari and activity monitor running!! No single process showed out of the ordinary memory use but totals showed 1 GB Wired and 2.06GB Active - ***?
Started client computer up in Target Disk Mode, hooked it up to my Macbook Pro and run Disk Warrior which found plenty of errors - not sure which specifically was the issue but, rebooted iMac and Bingo - all clear - all usage patters back to normal.
Disk Warrior is something everyone with a Mac should have in their house. Starting this iMac up using the DW disk would have given the same result so you don't need another Mac to make it happen, incidentally.

  • Mac OSX Start up disk

I have a message " Your Mac OSX start up disk has no more space available for application memory"  Yet I have only used 20% of my 500gb capacity. Any help would be appreciated, pse.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That message tells you that you don't have enough RAM for applications. Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities) and see which applications are taking RAM, and tell us which they are.
You will probably need more RAM. You can buy more RAM at OWC or Crucial > http://www.macsales.com
