How to restore  entire system with time machine

I downloaded an anti-virus program and decided to zap it.  Removed all files in my Download Folder, and also in Applications.
I still have some items I can't locate to delete; such as an icon in tool-bar and annoying dialog boxes telling me "no cookies found."
How can I use Time Machine to go back to the prior day before I downloaded?
If I can't do this where would I search for "Barrier 6 Anti-Virus?
thanks,  brian

Boot from your Install Disc first off, then follow Pondini's directions freom here on...
On LEOPARD or SNOW LEOPARD, start up from your Install disc (or Software Reinstall drive on a MacBook Air).  Insert it and either wait for the Mac OS X Install DVD window and double-click the Install icon;  or power down, then start up normally while holding down the "C" key. That takes a few minutes.
Select your language, then on the next screen, select Utilities from the top menubar:

  • Restoring my System with Time Machine to a new HD without the Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi there,
I changed my HD in my MacBook Pro to a bigger one and then wanted to Restore the System via Time Machine onto that new HD. Sadly I dont have the Snow Leopard DVD that was coming with the MacBook. Though I have another Snow Leopard DVD, that I purchased earlier for my older Mac. Now the Problem:
When I try to Boot the Macbook Pro from the older Snow Leopard DVD it always freezes and says: "You have to restart your Macbook. Press the power button until it switches off and then press the button again". But iwill not boot from the DVD.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
    Kind Regards

You can't use a machine specific OS X install disk with another model of Mac.
It has to do with hardware drivers being on one disk and not applicable to another machine, why you get the kernel panic.
Is there another possibility to Restore my System from my Time Machine Backup to the new HD?
No. You need the OS X install disk.
Choices depending on what your machine is:
1: If your machine with the missing OS X install disk originally came with 10.6.3 or later, call Apple for machine specific replacement disks, there will be a fee of course. That's the only ones that will work.
2: If your machine originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, you can choose to buy the 10.6.3 retail disk from Apple online, however it contains no free iLife. It comes faster.
3: If your machine originally came with 10.0 - 10.6.2, and you want the free iLife, then order the machine specific versions from Apple, however it might take longer.
4: If your machine originally came with 10.5, and your now on 10.6.x via the 10.6.3 retail disk, you can extract the free iLife from the 10.5 disks using Pacifist from CharlesSoft if you don't want to buy iLife.
You will need this disk regardless in case you need to #18 Reinstall Just OS X or #20 Erase and Install OS X or perform #4-#6 repair proceedures:
Step by Step to fix your Mac
    Is there another possibility...
Yes, once you have gotten a new OS X install disk, consider making bootable clones.
It's software that can clone your entire OS X drive/partition (no Bootcamp or Filevaulted) to another external drive and you can easily hold the option key to boot from it.

  • HT1338 How to restore iphoto photo with Time Machine?

I am trying to restore a single photo in iPhoto from Time Machine.
I open up iPhoto, then upen up Time Machine. When Time Machine launches, it opens up my desktop, not iPhoto.
I have seen videos of people doing this, but I cannot get Time Machine to open up iPhoto.
    What am I doing wrong?

Apple used to support restoration of photos via the iPhoto interface with Time Machine, but has halted this support. I believe the reason was the feature was corrupting people's libraries, but I cannot be certain. Your options here are to restore either the entire library or manually go into the library in the Finder and use Time Machine to browse through file histories that way. Alternatively you can access the Time Machine backup directly in the Finder and manually copy the needed files out of it (do not restore in this way, but instead copy to the Desktop and then re-import the image as a new photo).

  • How to restore email-Account with Time-Machine

    Hi,
I realized to my surprise that all my email accounts except the icloud one are gone from mail, after I restarted my mac. I do not know why this happened, crash or something ... - I only know that I only see my icloud account in the inbox.
I read the discussions about restoring mails with TM but what I wanted to avoid is to setup my 5 emails accounts manually again. I want to have them restored via TM (as I already have local copies after them emails in the inboxes I do not really care abouut the mails agains..) . I do not want to setup all the different acount settings again and again.
So the question is: Where are those account informations kept in TM? Can I restore them with mail open or do I ahve to close the mail app on my iMac and then simply restore a certain file/folder with TM (I hope it is such easy ...)
    Thanks for support!
    Christoph

The account settings are stored in ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist
So try again with Time Machine.
Browse to the MailData Folder, open Time Machine (click  in the toolbar
and select Enter Time Machine) the go back to a time before the Accounts.plist file was changed and click Restore.

  • Restoring Entire System with Time Capsule

    Hello,
I configured my Time Capsule with custom user accounts (AirPort Utility -> Disks -> File Sharing -> Secure Shared Disks: with Accounts). I think this may be causing a problem with selecting a backup source for an entire system restore to a re-formatted disk.
I am trying to follow the steps detailed in item #14 of this forum's FAQ but not having luck. I get to step "e" and on the "Select a Backup Source" dialog I am presented with the correct ("volume" on network "time_capsule") option. The "Continue" button is disabled and the "Connect to remote disk" button brings up a logon dialog with "System Administrator" pre-populated as the user. It does not accept the password I assigned to the Time Capsule, so I type the custom user name and password and it seems to authenticate successfully but then drops me back to the "Select a Backup Source" with the "Continue" button still disabled.
So my problem is that I can't locate the Time Machine backup. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mickey

That's probably right. You're more likely to find someone who knows how to deal with that in the +Time Capsule+ forum, hiding in the +Digital Life+ section, at: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253

  • How to Restore Safari Bookmarks with Time Machine in Lion

    Hi -
I want to restore my Safari bookmarks.
I am running Lion and have a Time Machine backup with the correct bookmarks.plist file.
The problem - as I see it - is that the "Library" folder - where the Safari bookmarks.plist file is located - no longer shows up (by default in Lion) in the Home folder.
I fixed it so that "Library" does now show up in the home folder but since it was not set to show "Library" at the time the backup I need was done, it doesn't show up in the Home folder for the backup that I need.
I have tried restoring the entire Home folder but this is not restoring my bookmarks for some reason.
I even tried restoring the entire hard drive but that did not work either!
It would seem that the "library" folder - even if it was hidden - would be restored when I did the entire Home folder or the entire hard drive.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Brillianrt! Worked like a charm.
Then I found an easy solution to alphabetizing that doesn't require 3rd party software in a Macworld article:
"Without resorting to external tools or dragging links about, it’s actually fairly simple to order the list. Make sure you can see a Finder window, or your Desktop, and the Safari Bookmarks window at the same time. Now just drag the folder (or folders) you want sorted from the Safari window to your Desktop—you’ll see the folder appear when you release the mouse. Switch to the Finder, and open each folder. Set the view to List view, and then close the window (not strictly necessary, but I’m a neat freak).
Now drag the folder back into Safari’s Bookmarks window; Safari will treat it like a newly-imported folder of bookmarks and add it to the list. Open the folder in the Bookmarks window, and you’ll see your neatly-sorted bookmarks."

  • Restoring entire system from time machine

The internal hard drive on our imac had to be replace because it died on us. The guy at the store said that I could restore using our time machine backup which is on an external drive. He said that we could do this when we turned the computer on for the first time. I tried to do this but when I went to select our external hard drive to restore from it did not show up on the "select your disk" window rather the only disk showing was our internal hard drive. Assuming I could do this later I skipped the restore option and finished the setup process. I am now trying to restore our mac from the last time machine backup. What I have read on Pondini's site is that I can do this using Migration Assistant. I tried this but I am having the same problem. When I get to the "select your disk" window my external hard drive is not showing - only my internal HD is listed. This is strange because my external hard drive is on and connected and appears in the list of devices on the Finder. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks very much in advance!

  • How do I restore lost emails with Time Machine?

I would like to know how I restore lost drafts that I had on my mail program 6.6 with Time Machine.
I forgot that when you restore the mail program (was buggy) it saves all your emails except for your drafts. So now I need to find all the drafts that were deleted with my Time Machine.
Where are the drafts store prior to when I have to delete my mail program because of bugs in it?
How do I find them once I launch Time Machine.  Can't recall where they are stored in my systems folder?
Thanks for any help regarding this.

    From Apple support article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
To restore individual files see Restoring specific files or folders.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
Hold down the Command and R keys at startup to start the computer from the Recovery system. The Recovery menu that appears includes the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. If you are using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, start your computer from the installation disc. Then use the "Restore From Time Machine Backup" utility.

  • Restore System with Time Machine?

It seems to be this SHOULD be easy - but in three hours I just haven't been able to figure it out.
How do I do a system restore with time machine?
I did a back up a week ago. Yesterday I had some kind of major glitch that messed up an unknown number of my files. I figured "that's okay, I'll just restore everything to last week and that will be fine." Except I can't seem to find out how to do that!
I have no idea how many files are affected, but last week it was all fine. I did a diagnostic and it says my hardware is fine. I did the safe boot start up and everything is supposed to be okay on my drive. But my files and software is still messing up - and I think if I can just put it back to last week, I'm fine.
I do not have a CD that works (I found one, put it in, and the system won't boot from it). I do have my backup drive. What do I do?

See if the instructions here work for you:
    http://pondini.org/TM/14.html
You really should get replacement installation disks from Apple Customer Service.  They will need the serial number of your MBP and there is a charge.
    Ciao.
