How to restore files from an erased hard drive?

hi
I recently got infected with a trojan, and after updating my mac was told ive also picked up malware software.
I moved everything i needed to my hard drive and wiped and reloaded my mac. i then checked my time machine backups on my hard drive and found the malware files on the time machine backups too. so i took what i needed off my hard drive and wiped that, but without realising have deleted my uni work folder containing my essays.....
Is there anyway to recover the files? ive tried using a couple of programmes online but there only trials, so when i find the file i cant restore it.

Are there any free data recovery softwares availible? ive tried about 4 that say theyre free and that can find the files im looking for but i cant recover it without paying?
If not whats the cheapest that you can reccomend?
Also i dont think the file is availible on my Mac book anymore but i can find it on the hard drive i had it stored on. is the last section the one to use for recovering from hard drives?

Your HDDs are formatted for windows.  There is software available that will allow you to use them with your MBP.  It has received mixed reviews and you will have to use Google to find it.  Perhaps someone else will give you specific information on same.
The other option is to reformat the HDDs to be compatible with your MBP using Disk Utility, but that will erase the user data.

Please walk me through (step by step) on how to load spicific files from an external hard drive onto my new PC.

Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus are displayed at the top of the screen.
    Click Go > Network
Double click the Time Capsule icon, then double click the icon representing the drive to mount it on the Mac's desktop. It is named "Data" unless you have changed it
You can drag/drop files to the "Data" icon on the desktop
235 GB is going to take forever if you try to do this using wireless. If at all possible, connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
Even using Ethernet, you are probably looking at 10-12 hours for the file transfer.  All bets are off with wireless only, but a guess would be several days....or even more.

  • How to copy files from a removed hard drive

Hi removed my hard drive from my Dv9408nr laptop because the screen won't power on, and but my question is there a way to copy the files from my removed hard drive to another laptop. Is there a cord the fits into the hard drive connector slot to a usb or some other cord that goes to a laptop so I can copy my files to another laptop, so I can recover my files?

    Hi,
Something like this should work and you can have an external HDD at the end

  • How do I get back my files from an erased hard drive? (disk utility)

Under the advice of another Mac user, I used the Disk Utility application to 'erase' and reformat my MacBook Pro to 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' so that I could copy files that were on my MB to my hard drive and it erased everything on my hard drive.
I am now panicking. How do I get all my files, documents, videos and photos that were on my hard drive back? I saw that there was a 'restore' option iin Disk Utility but I have no idea what it is or how to use it... I reallly need some help!!!
Is there any way I can get my files back?
    Thanks you

It won't help, but here is an explanation:
The Restore functions in Disk Utility (in Mac OS X 10.3 and later) let you create a clone of your disk. The system software can be replaced and therefore restored by a previously created disk image using this option. Normally, using disk images or Disk Utility's Restore functions will destroy data on a destination disk, by overwriting data from an original source disk.

  • Need instructions on restoring files from iPod to Hard Drive

My ExHD went kaputz again so I need to restore all of my tunes and playlists from my iPod to the HD. I've seen instructions on here on how to do that but can't find them anywhere. Can someone give me the link to do this?

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.

  • How to recover files from an external hard drive

I just got a brand spankin' new iMac yesterday. I've never had an Apple computer before so I was unfamiliar with Time Machine. I called my husband in to help me out thinking he would be more tech-saavy than me, clearly I was mistaken! He backed up my computer onto our WD external hard drive that we had stored ALL of our photos on. Before it would let him go any further is stays you must erase the previous back up or something (which we didn't really know what that meant). So now that my new iMac is backed up ALL of my pictures and files are erased. Please tell me if there is ANY way possible to recover those files? These are pictures of when my daughter was born all the way up through now!! Please help!!! Thanks!
PS. I don't know what operating system or anything like that I am using. I literally just got it out of the box last night so whatever comes on the computer!!

  • Restore Files from Seagate external hard drive?

I have a macbook (late 2009 version) and recently my hard drive failed. Before failing, I brought my mac in and a genius helped me do a time machine backup onto a 1t Seagate external hard drive (the external was reformatted for os beforehand). Now, I can't figure out how to restore my old information from the external onto my new, restored hard drive.

  • How to move files from an external hard drive to a time capsule that is part of an extended network

What are the steps for copying or transferring 235 GB of files (primarily .mts movie files) that are on a Western Digital external hard drive to a 500 GB Time Capsule that I want to use as an external hard drive?  After the files have been moved, I will be returning the Western Digital external hard drive to my son's coach and will be using iMovie to access the 500 GB Time Capsule to create a highlight video.
Currently, I have a 1TB Time Capsule that is serving as the wireless router for my network and for Time Machine backups to two Macs.  The 500GB Time Capsule is set up as an extended part of the 1TB Time Capsule's network.
I can copy and paste files from the Western Digital exernal hard drive to the Desktop of my iMac but when I try to move a file from the Western Digitial external hard drive to the empty 500 GB Time Capsule, the following error message pops up:
"The item “filename” can’t be moved because “Linda's Time Capsule (2)” can’t be modified."

  • How to recover files from a crashed hard drive

I believe my hard drive is in the early stages of crashing.  Last night I was using my Macbook Pro and was running safari and microsoft word when all the sudden the computer froze up and I got the spinning wheel.  I waited for about 5 minutes hoping the wheel would go away and after no avail decided to turn the computer off by holding the power button.  I waited a couple minutes to let it cool down and then I rebooted it and I was then given the jumping folder with a ? on it.  I did some research and found that this basically means your hard drive was crashing.  So I read a solution online that if you hit the Option button while the Mac is booting up it will allow you to select a hard drive.  I did this and luckily I was able to select my main hard drive and the computer booted up, but once I had logged in and was at the desktop screen the computer was very slow and when I tryed to open Finder I was once again given the spinning wheel.  The wheel continued to spin for a solid 10 minutes and the screen finally went black with just the spinning wheel.  So I once again decided to turn off the computer by holding the power button.  I have gone and talked to 2 different tech support stores and both are pretty sure that the hard drive is failing, which I pretty much already knew, and that it is going to be around 75$ to recover the lost information and another 125$ to install a brand new hard drive.
However, I have been using Time Machine to back up my computer but I have not backed it up since August 23rd which was about 2 weeks ago.  So I would lose all the files that I have made in the last 2 weeks basically and since I started school I have done quite a bit of work and so I do not want to lost the files.
What solutions can you come up with that I could use to possibly recover my files?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

Hi, likely the easiest is to just poll the drive & get something like this...
    Get MacScan...
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/networking_security/macscan.html
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/U3NVSPATA/
But if you have a good external drive already, just clone it.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

    Or SuperDuper...

  • How do I delete files from a portable hard drive

I've been backing up my MacBook Pro on an external portable hard drive. I need to delete some but not all the files from that portable hard drive permanently. When I highlight them and click to move them to Trash I get a message telling me this cannot be done because they are Read Only files? How do I go about it. I am required by work to delete them off this hard drive. Do I have to reformat the hard drive? If so how do I go about it?

You can easily delete files from a Time Machine Backup:
Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock.If the Time Machine icon isn’t in the Dock, look for Time Machine in the Applications folder.
Use the arrows or the timeline along the right side of your screen to browse through the backups Time Machine created. The windows behave just like Finder windows, so you can open folders, click items in the sidebar, and use the search field in the upper-right corner of the window.
When you find the item you want to delete, select it, and then open the Action menu (looks like a gear) and choose Delete All Backups for the item.
