I see different questions about restoring to factory settings, but I'm unclear if this includes leaving Pages and Keynote on the IMAC. These applications were installed by Apple when I order the IMAC, and I don't want them cleared off. How can I clear my personal information without deleting this programs?

Prepare Your Mac for Sale
Boot from the OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select the startup volume from the left side list then click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Options button. Select the one pass Zero Data option and click on the OK button. Then click on the Erase button.
Note: You can skip the Zero Data option if you are not concerned about removing sensitive personal data from the hard drive. If you choose to skip this part of the process then it is possible for others to recover data from the hard drive. The Zero Data procedure will prevent others from getting access to your personal information.
This process will take 30 minutes to several hours depending upon the size of the hard drive. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now complete the OS X installation. At the completion of the installation do not restart the computer. Instead just shut it off. The next user will be presented with the Setup Assistant when they turn on the computer just as it would if new out of the box.

My iMac had its OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks fully deleted and reinstalled in the Aple Store in Haarlem Netherlands yesterday.
Seen severe corruption problems of my KeyChain log-in codes.
Everything restored from iCloud was fully OK such as Contacts, Calendar, Mail, Notes.
But I lost all my iTunes data and iPhoto data, MS Ofiice data such as Word, Excel, etc.
My iMac however was connected through WiFi to a Time Capsule but I really do not know if the Time Capsule was ever set to ON under System Preferences. Or was it simply always set to OFF on my iMac.? .......
Question 1 : How can I find out directly on my Time Capsule if a separate Volume was ever made for this iMac ? And how can I restore that volume - if I find it back - to my iMac ?.
Time Capsule Program on my restored iMac seems to be fully empty. Last date is yesterday and nothing before.
Question 2 : When I connect my iMac directly through Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule I do not know how to find and retrieve (restore) the speciic volume for my iMac.
Question 3 : how to delete the very old volumes directly on the Time Capsule which are not in use any more since years. ?
Question 4 : Any other suggetions for how to restore iPhoto and iTunes ? From iPhone, from iPod ? Let's not discuss Photostram here now.....

Mavericks does nasty things to the Time Machine backups..
It tends to overwrite everything or certainly to hide it.
If the TM was not turned on, then it could not backup.

The guy who wrote all this info died before he had a chance to update it to Mavericks.. sadly.. he did a great service to the community.
Conclusion .. do not send stuff to Apple for repair before you make a disk image backup. Never trust Time Machine to do whole computer restores.. and Mavericks is a mess.

How to restore files to crashed iMac without Time Machine.

My iMac crashed and I am about to try and recover it with the Recovery partition. A month ago a pet somehow knocked my Time Machine disk off my desk and I hadn't replaced it. I have my files back up via BackBlaze as well, but don't know how I am going to incorporate (restore) those files in the proper places later.

Reinstalling OS X is easy. But unless you have a restorable backup of your files there's little you can do to restore them. Read your BackBlaze documentation to find out how you restore a backup made with it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

How full is your Mac's hard drive?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

l just had my iMac hard disk replaced due a recall. Before taking it in I made a disk image with disk Utility and securely erased the disk. I also have Time Machine back-ups going back several months. On getting the machine back, since it contains sensitive data securely erased the new hard disk and started up with the Snow Leopard boot disk. When I tried to scan the disk for reinstall I get an error "Unable to scan 'image name' (internal error)". I tried several times with the same result. I then tried to restore from Time Machine and got a message that No Mac OS X backups were found."
I installed Snow Leopard and again tried both approaches with the same result. I can see to Time Machine backups on the disk but when I restore it simply copies the files into "/Volumes. Anyone have ideas on how to restore the system?

Unless you tested and restored it after making it, it's a poor choice, since it requires three volumes: the boot volume, source volume, and a destination volume. My mid-2007 iMac would not load up past the white screen. I tried everything and was unable to get the hard drive to boot up. I took it to the Apple store but due to the age if the machine they would not attempt to fix it. They were not able to boot the computer off an external drive or network. I removed the hard drive to salvage any data I could. I hooked it up to my Mac mini via a SATA enclosure. I was able to remove my photos, music, etc. I now want to restore the hard drive in a last ditch effort to try and save my computer. I have the drive pulled up in disk utility on my Mac mini. I verified the disk and attempted to repair the disk. Both times I received the message: "Error: Unrecognized file system" I am unsure how to restore this disk so I can return it to the iMac and try and get it to load up. Any other ideas?

If the disk cannot be repaired, then try erasing and reformatting it using Disk Utility. If unable, then try with a different disk repair app, such as DiskWarrior, Drive Genius, or TechTools Pro. If still no go, get a new bare HD to put into the iMac.

How to Restore iPhoto Library from BackUp?

My iPhoto library has gone blank, although its trash has the 4,555 images. And all organization, albums, keywords, photo names, gone. Recently my backup storage, where library kept, went blank. I got a new backup, and a pro restored most of old data, and transfered to new one. So, I have the Library on the new backup, and need to restore it in the iPhoto Library, rather than create a new one, which as I understand will lose albums, keywords, etc. A friend says that way to hold down a key when opening iPhoto that will have it look for old library and restore? Not in Help or elsewhere.
I had a MacBook Pro, when this first happen. Now have iMac and have iLife 09, but don't want to instal it until photo library restored.

The simplest way to restore is to put the Library in the Pictures Folder and launch iPhoto.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' To select a Library.

My Macbook Pro hard drive crashed, and I want to restore my backed-up mail files from Time Capsule onto my Desktop Mac (iMac 27"). When I try to restore by opening Time Capsule with Mail already open, I can only see the current mail files on the iMac (not the backed up files on the MacBook Pro), even when I point to the MacBook Pro backup file.
