How to restore iPhoto and iBooks after clean install?

I need to do a clean erase and reinstall of Yosemite.  How do I preserve my iPhoto and iBooks content and settings after reinstalling those apps?
Thanks,

I am new to Yosemite and to date have not used Time Machine.  I did find another detailed web site that hopefully will answer your questions - Apple  OSX  and  Time  Machine  Tips.  There is a link on that site titled How Time Machine Works its Magic which is very detailed.  The author of the website was a respected member of this community.  He passed away I believe last year.

  • How to restore 10.3 files after clean install of 10.4

I had Mac OS 10.3 and did a clean install to Tiger (10.4) earlier this year. I thought I backed up my Apple Mail, iPhoto and iTunes libraries but I did not do it properly. I lost my attachments, all my photos and tunes.
Is there anything that can be done to restore my Apple Mail, iPhoto and iTunes back to what it was when I had 10.3?
    Thanks,
    Cindy

Yes, there is a way, but are you sure you want to do that?
You can export your mail in mbox format by selecting the messages in Mail 2.x, doing File > Save As, and choosing Raw Message Source from the Format popup menu. You'll have to import those files into Mail 1.x doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Other / Standard mbox as the data format.
Alternatively, you can use an utility such as Emailchemy or emlx to mbox Converter to do the conversion.
Be sure to make a backup copy of the current ~/Library/Mail folder first and keep it until you've successfully completed the conversion, just in case.

  • How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?

How to restore views and procedures after drop user command?
We have 817 EE on NT and one developer created a lot of procedures, functions and vews. DB was not backuped and archived and export has not been done - our fault and we understand it. Sorry for this.
Ok, now the story: another developer dropped this db user and we lost everything: procedures, functions and vews. The new user with trhe same name was created and new schema was imported in this user, but all old objects are lost. We don't have export and backup and archive log files.
Question: may we can restore this lost stuff from some other sources. We are looking for lost codes, not data. May be we can use redo logs or shared pool or any other things. Any idea will be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Victor
    [email protected]

The switch has occurred after user was dropped, the data has been overwritten and there is be no way to use redo log files.
I would like to explore another opportunity. Is possible to use Shared Pool or any Data Dictionary internal information to restore texts of the lost SQL and PL/SQL scripts executed in this DB before user was dropped? Not too many scripts are executed in this DB and the lost ones may still be in stack. I remember that Shared Pool (cash) should keep last executed scripts in order to improve performance. They probably are kept in some special format. Can we restore these scripts? Of course they also might be pushed out by Import that had been done after user was dropped.
    Thanks for your help,
    Victor

  • How to restore playlists and ratings after hard drive format

Several people have reported problems restoring paylists and ratings after reformating a hard drive. Here is what worked for me and what did not.
I had to reformat my hard drive. Before doing that I exported my playlists from itunes to another hard drive as an xml file. I also copied the folder with all my songs to another drive. (Also of course had it backed up on DVDs.)Then I copied the itunes library files (see url http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93732) to anoher drive.
After reformating my hard drive and installing the lastest verion of ITunes, I copied the actual songs back into a subfolder in my music folder. I then told iTunes to import the subfolder with the actual music. That resulted in a restored library that lacked playlists and ratings.
    Don't do this
I purchased Anapod ($30.00) because its web page said (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/):
"Anapod CopyGear is an easy-to-use, compact utility for copying music tracks, playlists, podcasts, photos, and videos from your iPod back to your PC."
Well, I did transfer 104 playlists back to my iTunes library through the Anapod backup function. However, the transfer also put more than 20 gigs of duplicate songs into the library. All of the songs listed in the playlists were duplicated in iTunes. I could find no way in Anapod to simply copy the ratings and the playlists. Anapod documentation was outdated. For example the online help pages said that playlists could not be backed up. This was confusing because I had just done that.
"In a future release we will be adding the ability to backup your iPod playlists. This will allow you to generate backup files of your iPod playlists on the computer. These files will not be usable on your computer though. They can only be used to restore playlists at a later time on your iPod (assuming it still carries all the audio files referred to in that playlist)." This text is from url http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/support/tome/tx2pc.php#5.1.2
I sent requests to Anapod for help today, but they have not been answered yet. Docs truly did not seem to help. Would have been good if there was a pdf file rather than just an online help html file that seemed outdated.
    This worked for me:
I ended up having iTunes wipe out the entire library because of all the dups Anapod made. (Made sure that iTunes only wiped out library and did not delete actual songs from hard drive. Then I had iTunes import my subfolder with songs again. That brought me back to where I was before wasting money and much time on Anapod.
After I had my iTunes library up (without ratings and playlists and after finding Anapod did not meet my needs.
    1. I imported the xml file to which I had exported playlists before reformating hard drive. That gave me the playlists back although an error message said some items not copied because the music tracks listed in playlists were not in my iTunes library. --Possibly I deleted songs after playlists were downloaded some time ago to iPod. Importing the xml file is probably not necessary because of what I did below.
    2. Quit iTunes
    3. Because my song ratings were still missing, I then moved the iTunes library files made by the new version of iTunes into a different folder.
    4. Then I put my old version 4 library files into the place where the library files should be.
    5. Then I crossed my fingers and restarted iTunes. It took awhile to start and said it was updating my library files. Now I have back most or all of my playlists and ratings.
If problems develop, I will probably wipe out iTunes library and use Anapod to move everything from my iPod into a folder and tell iTunes to import that folder. That approach might avoid the dups that Anapod makes when restoring playlists to iTunes.
So my message is keep your actual songs backed up somewhere (such as DVD's and anotehr hard drive) and keep a duplicate copy of your library files somewhere not on your hard drive. With these items you should be able to restore iTunes library to its former status.
Sorry for the length of this message. Hope it helps someone.

    The simple version of above:
iTunes Files to Backup (anytime you make additions or changes to the Music or Library that you want to retain)
    1) All music files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    3) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    4) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    5) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    -- C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    6) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”

  • SLOW and SLUGGISH after clean install PLEASE HELP!

My Macbook Pro started acting slugggish a few nights ago, and it seemed after a reboot that it ran better, but quickly slowed down.  I ran permissions, disk repair, reset the PRAM the SMC and etc... nothing helped.  I tried to do a Time Machine restore and after 10 hours of SLOW restoration (it still had 70 hours left) i decided to do a CLEAN INSTAL of Yosemite 10.10.
Same thing, takes over 10 minutes to boot up and i click on something and the beach ball will spin for a minute.
Disk Utility says everything is OK.... but even the internet is sluggish as if the entire machine is not processing the information fast enough.
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated as this is on day 4.
    Thanks
    Steve

CLEAN INSTALL took over 8 hours to complete, as if everything is running in slow mode.
Also, i ran this app as i see most ask for it.

  • Is it possible to restore individual apps and files after clean install of Lion?

My new iMac is one of the small group that is having HDD drive replaced due to issue with 1TB Seagate drives.
When I get it back I'd like to install a clean copy of Lion and not restore whole system from TimeMachine.
However I don't want to lose my iTune or Aperture Libraries.  Is it possible to restore just these libraries form TimeMachine backup or is there a better way to go?  Email is all IMAP so not an issue, F/Fox & Safari bookmarks and all contacts & iCal material are likewise MobileMe/cloud based so not an issue.
Just after safest and best solution.
    Thanks

The short answer is: yes you can restore only these libraries from the last Time Machine backup.  It's quite easy
    1) Clean install Lion
    2) Enter time machine from the menu bar while pressing "option" (Browse other Time Machine disks).
    3) Restore the Libraries.
Individual apps are tricker - depending on how they were installed in the first place.  Anything that used an installer, and may rely on library frameworks (e.g iwork or MS Office) is not going to work easily with this method.

  • How save factory software on T400 and reinstall after clean install of Windows 7

    Hi
I have a Thinkpad T400  2764-CTO Running Vista Business 32-bit  and want to do a clean install to Windows 7 Pro.
Sounds like I can get all the drivers via System Update 4.0, but I'm concerned about how to save/re-install some of the software that came on the machine.
In particular, Intervideo WinDVD and Roxio Media Import. If I go to my Programs folder and copy the folders for Roxio and InterVideo onto a flash drive, and then re-copy into the Programs folder on the C drive after a clean install, does that work?
I've never used Rescue and Recovery on the laptop, and am not sure how it works. Any advice is appreciated.
I'm not sure I even know all the stuff that exists from the factory. Anything else I should be concerned about? Thanks! - Kathleen

Please review the HP software and driver download page for drivers/software that are compatible with Windows 7. Also note that there is a BIOS update for Windows Vista that improves the system's ability to function with WIndows 7. Also read "Alerts" and other information regarding this product and Windows 7.

  • How to restore old prefs, etc after clean reinstall of 10.3.9?

Due to a fiasco with Drive Genius I was forced to reformat and reinstall 10.3.9. Luckly, I was bright enough to manually copy over the entire contents of the drive to a firewire drive before I started the drive genius project.
I was able to find directions on how to restore my users which worked perfectly.
I've copied all the apps back. But all the apps were in the main drive rather than in users, so the prefs, registrations etc are, I assume, stored in the old library.
Is there a way to replace the new library with the original to avoid several days work digging out the original packaging to get the serial numbers for re-entering so I can get back to work right away?

The serial #s, etc were in fact in the original main library. I was able to restore the use of all the programs by manually replacing the missing items in each folder in the library. It took over an hour, but I got it all back and saved me from having to rummage through storage boxes for the original documentation to retrieve and re-enter all the info.

  • Restore from time machine after clean install of Mavericks

I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks to get rid of all the very old files hiding in my system folders.  I made a startup disk following online instructions, rebooted from the USB drive and wiped the drive and reinstalled Mavericks.  Then I plugged in my Time machine backup drive and tried to recover particular folders from the latest backup.  However, I am getting a permission error that prevents me from going into the old user folder from that backup.  It has a red circle/line icon on the folder.  How do I get around this so I can select what to restore?

You might be able to view in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Time  Machine  -  Troubleshooting by James Pond is the best source around for Time Machine  help.
I'm not seeing your issue listed. It's possible you will need to do a full Time Machine restore to another drive so you can actually boot from the drive then log into the user. If you have enough space on internal you could partition to restore there without polluting your current new install.
Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions 18. How can I copy my TM backups to a different location?
I backup to Time Machine but I also use a clone and use it over Time Machine when I'm trying to restore a User like youare trying to do. Hopefully someone else will have a better suggestion other than doing a full restore.

  • Proper reinstallation of catalog, settings and files after clean installing W7

    Hi,
I'm clean installing windows 7 (I've had it with Vista) and would like to know what is the best procedure and the logistics involved for the transfer/restoration of my catalog.
I will have a large, clean secondary hard drive available (being formatted as we speak) to store anything needed before reformatting and installing W7 in my primary drive.
    Here are the specifics:
    I'm using PSE8
My photos (13,000 pics) are properly organized in folders inside the "Pictures" folder within my User using Vista's default folder structure and would like to preserve this same arrangement under W7 (basically restoring to the Pictures folder in W7.
I have only one Catalog and is only accesible only to me (as opposed to the "accesible to everyone" option).
I would also like to preserve my address book and preferences, but don't know where ae these files located.
My planned windows-related workflow is as follows (suggestions welcome):
    1. Make a simple copy of C: dirve to the 2nd hard drive (about 400GB worth of stuff) just to have an accesible backup of all files.
    2. Use the easy transfer wizard to transfer all windows user's settings and files (from all four users) to the 2nd drive.
and then use the wizard to restore everything after installing W7.
    3. Do a backup of my PSE catalog using the backup feature of the Organizer. Recent second backup is safely stored off-site.
    4. Do the same for my itunes library (research pending on the proper procedure).
    5. Reformat hard drive and then clean-install W7.
    6. Use easy tranfer wizard to restore files and settings.
    7. Install all programs.
    8. Restore PSE catalog using the restore feature in PSE.
    9. manually copy back the address book and preferences to their proper folders... please tell me where these folders are going to be located
    Questions:
What is the proper way to do the transfer my photos and Catalog file?
Should I use the PSE8 backup and restore?
If so, what will happen with the photos already restored by the Windows wizard? should I delete them and let the PSE restore procedure "legally" restore all my pictures and catalog file? This is my big question.
I will very much appreciate all your help and sujjestions with this procedure

can go for PSE back up and restore . It will work for your large catalogs and images

  • How to Restore Arch's grub after Ubuntu install to 2nd disk

I installed Ubuntu to sdb after installing Arch to sda. Ubuntu was installed with LVM, though Arch does not use LVM.
I want to wipe out ubuntu now, but it seems to be in control of my boot process, and as a newb, I'm not quite sure how that process transpires.  I have read the Grub article on Arch's Wiki site, but that doensn't help me.
After booting into Arch and running:
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and then rebooting, I still have the Ubuntu Grub menu on the next boot.  My Arch /etc/default/grub is the same one that I used before installing Ubuntu - I'm not concerned about adding Ubuntu to the menu, so that's not an issue.
What do I need to do to get Arch back in control of the boot process?
    Thanks in advance!

Kilz wrote:Here is an option in case you cant figure it out. Rename the /boot directory in the ubuntu install and copy the /boot directory from Arch in its place. Reboot, if everything works fine delete everything in the Ubuntu partition but /boot. Rename the /boot directory in the Arch install then shrink the ubuntu partition and mount it in the arch install as /boot. in the end you will just have a separate boot partition that will take up little space.
Thanks again. I finally got it working, but via a different, somewhat convoluted route.
I screwed things up and ended up with only a grub prompt at boot.  Following instructions found online, I was able to boot my arch disk (sda), then ran grub-install and grub-mkconfig.  The install ran without errors (as before) but grub-mkconfig reported errors.  I had been disregarding these errors, because I thought they were related to the custom font and background in my /etc/default/grub file, and another source explained that I could ignore errors when setting fonts and background there (not sure if that source was reliable).  But one of the errors on grub-mkinstall reported it couldn't find device.map.  There was no device.map in /boot/grub.
Also of note, I had renamed the old /boot/grub/grub.cfg and left the /boot/grub directory without a proper grub.cfg file - probably why I got a grub menu at boot!
In the end, I created a device.map in /boot/grub/ and re-ran grub-mkconfig, but still got an error.  So I commented out the font and background lines in /etc/default/grub and also renamed my old backup /boot/grub/grub.cfg-backup to the proper "grub.cfg", then re-ran grub-mkconfig.  This time there were not errors reported from grub-mkconfig and with a quick glance at the contents, I was able to figure out that the menu entries looked good.
I was able to reboot with the appropriate arch menu at this point!  While I'm not sure which step "fixed" my problem, I wanted to at least record my steps here for future users - perhaps one of the options above will help someone else.  Worth mentioning is that the ubuntu (sdb) drive was LVM, and I think that might have played into some of my difficulties, but I'm not sure about that.
The device.map that I created looked like this, where sda is my arch disk and sdb is the ubuntu installation (still not sure if it is needed, though):
    (hd0) /dev/sda
    (hd1) /dev/sdb

  • OSX 10.75 Macbook Pro 30 Minute Boot and Slow After Clean Install

    Here is my problem.
I recently purchased a mabook pro which was dropped with the intentions of fixing the screen.
I was able to initially install OSX with Internet recovery, then for some reason on reboot the password would not work.
I was able to fix the password problem, but the extremely slow boot time persists.
This is a fresh install so I am not sure why it is so slow.

So I figured out what the problems was.
The Hardrive was going bad. I had another hardrive that I knew was good taken from another Mac, I swapped them. With the other drive the computer booted up fine. I later took the drive to the Genius bar and the confirmed what I already knew.

  • How to get iPhoto and iTunes to a clean installed Yosemite from Time Machine

I wiped the Hard Drive and clean installed to OS X Yosemite. For Some reason, some of my Time Machine back ups disappeared or got deleted and it wasn't even full. I had back ups from 2011 and now it only starts from 2013 of June.
Next....when I try to restore my other apps(like iPhoto and my iTunes) I doesn't give that warp space effect in the background. It gives me the window layer effect but I just see the same mountain background on the desktop as the default Yosemite(unless thats how its suppose to look like that?) I can't restore using Time Machine because the little lines at the right are red (see screen shot) and it won't let me restore, and if i go back by using the arrows, if freezes. So,
I don't know how to install the old iTunes and iPhoto on my existing clean installed Yosemite from my Time Machine.
    Can someone help me?

@ LarryHN Thank you ver much for you help I understand now that you just can't copy over the old library(got it)
I had the latest version of iPhoto before I cleaned installed.
The link you gave me was most informative and I want to thank you. But still problems arrive.
This came up and I don't know which one to pick
