How to Restore iTunes Library after update?

Updated iMac to iTunes 11.0.5 and lost almost entire library of music (all but 3 songs). Tried to open iTunes with previous library but music I downloaded from CD's cannot be "located". Don't know how to find them. Tried to restore from back up external drive library, but those files are "locked" or I don't have permission. Purchased songs, with some exceptions, will play. Some don't though.
My library was from an much older version of iTunes (2008 or 09), could that be an issue? I don't use this desktop much at all, but would like to have the library be functional.
1.  How can I restore my library getting all songs to play?
2.  Should I update iTunes on my Macbook? It's using 11.0.4 now. I don't want to mess up it's library as that's the one I use.

  • How to restore itunes library after a drive got corrupted

I have iTunes on my PC. I have my media on D drive while library file on C drive.
My C drive got corrupted and my computer started showing Blue Screen of Death. I tried every thing possible but was not able to restore any files from that drive. I had to reformat the drive and reinstall windows 7 again.
Since D drive was fine all my songs, videos, movies, apps and books are fine. How can I restore my library as is. There is no option to add the whole folder in iTunes. There are a lot of files to add individually. Please help.

  • How to restore Music Library after update to iTunes 11?

    Hi guys.
Since updating to iTunes 11, my Music Library isn't what it should be. I've noticed that some songs have moved from their albums to completely new ones, and others songs have gone missing entirely.
When I look in the actual Music Library folder, the songs and albums in question aren't organised anything like they are in iTunes, which makes tracking the missing songs down problematic.
I'm in America at the minute, but I intend using Time Machine to restore things, once I return to England.
Any idea what happened, or a better way of fixing the problem?

Does anyone have any advice? I'm in complete limbo until this is resolved.

  • I have lost my itunes library after updating it and keep getting a message saying MSVCR80.dll is not installed when I try to uninstall/reinstall it???

I have lost my itunes library after updating it. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling it and it gets so far then tells me that it cannot be installed because MSVCR80.dll is not installed on my pc. I have no idea what this is and have googled it, followed links to sites that say they can fix it, only for them to scan, tell me I have 3 thousand issues and then want me to pay $30 dollars to fix it for me. This message also appears on firing up my pc too.
    Can anyone help please?

I've been through the exact same thing and cannot seem to get an answer here. When you go to Manage Storage, does it have something at the top like "19.1 GB of 25 GB available"? I only have a Mail account with 5.3 GB in it and a Backups account with 553 MB in it. Obviously, these don't add up to 19.1 GB. There was no change in any of these numbers when I deleted all the same files you mention. With the free Mobile Me storage expiring next month, this is something I'm pretty concerned about.

  • Anyone know how to Restore iTunes Library from External HD

My PC won't even turn on anymore. But luckily, I have most of the iTunes Library backed up in an External HD.
Now, I've searched and can't find instructions from Apple on how to Restore the Library while keeping all the Playlists, Ratings, and all that other good stuff. Anyone know to do that, or at least WHERE that info is?
    Thanks.

  • Restoring iTunes library after hard drive crash

The hard drive on my Macbook pro (mid-2009) crashed. I took it to the genius bar for a diagnostic. The drive was physically fine so they wiped it and reinstalled Mavericks, which is now running 10.9.4. I am restoring user files from Time Machine individually to keep things clean. Hooray!
I'm now running iTunes 10.3.1. Years ago, I placed the iTunes library in Users>Shared on the hard drive, so my wife could access the files when she logged in. We don't need to do that now, so today I dragged all the music files from Time Machine to the "Music" section on the iTunes window.
They seem to have installed and indexed fine, but I lost some of the original data--like date added and numbers of plays--which would be nice to have. (Then all now read as installed today with zero plays.) My playlists are all gone as well; I'd like to have them back.
Is there any way to restore the music so those things stay intact, by basically making my library the way it was?
I considered dragging the entire set of folders over from the Shared section of Time Machine, but was afraid the music would not index, and the folder structure and nomenclature was different (for example, it had iTunes Music instead of iTunes media and there were a couple other anomalies). I imagine this is because the Shared library was set up under a different version of iTunes.
I hope this doesn't further complicate things but my user name was changed at the genius bar (from what it was prior to crash); they added my last name to my user name. I didn't notice till I got home. So far I have had no trouble accessing the files I have dragged in (Numbers, Word, etc), but don't know if the permissions on the music files might be affected.
    All help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • HT1203 I am trying to restore my iTunes library after updating to latest version. How to I get to the iTunes library? I am using Firefox. users\username\Music\iTunes did not bring me there.x

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • How to restore iTunes library from TimeMachine external hard drive backup after clean install

I was not able to solve this problem, hence I decided to open this discussion.
    1. Recently, I clean installed Yosemite so my new Mac is completely empty.
    2. I have my time machine backup on my eternal hard drive and would like to restore only specific things - such as iTunes library.
    3. I did not manually copy iTunes library to my drive, I did the TM backup only, but I also do have all the files in my own "music" folder I manually backed-up.
However, I cannot locate the library there, where is it?
How do I move the library to my new Mac and then establish a new source folder that would be on my drive?
PS: Previously, iTunes used my own music folder as a source = it contained all the music files. I had it on an external drive, later moved it to my Mac.
This leads me to the conclusion that my backup copy of iTunes library did not contain the files anyway.
    Any advice?
    Thank you in advance.

I am confused as to what you had or have where and when.  The bottom line is, your library (for the standard user) is everything in the iTunes folder.  As far as iTunes' organization and display is concerned, your library is a file called "iTunes Library.itl" which points to all the other host of files and folders normally in the iTunes folder which all work together.

If you kept everything together in one place then you need to put the whole iTunes folder on the drive where you want it, start iTunes while holding down the option key and guide it to that .itl file.  If things were split up and you had media on the external and the rest of the library on the internal you need to get them back to exactly where they were before.  If you can't find that iTunes folder holding the critical .itl file anywhere then you have a bunch of media tracks and no organization and will need to rebuild the organization from ground level.

  • How to restore iTunes Library on computer from iCloud or other method after iTunes library suddenly becomes empty?

I just opened my iTunes on my laptop (which is considerably slow) and all of my music, apps, everything has been wiped for some reason ie. my library is completely empty. I'm not sure what caused this and I really don't care I just want my playlists, music, apps back so I can add more music and sync my iPhone with it again as normal.
I'm sure that all my music has been backed up to iCloud but I'm not sure how to access that from my computer and how to import it back into my library. I'm afraid to sync my phone and iPod now because I've read that this will wipe them completely again and they are the only places I can see my music/playlists so I don't want them to disappear from these devices also before I can restore everything on my laptop.
I logged into my apple ID again on my computer hoping that maybe my music would come up when iTunes was connected to my particular account but the library is still empty. Not really sure what to do and would appreciate any advice. Maybe I'm missing something really obvious here and if so could someone point it out, I won't be insulted! Thank you!

If your music is still in \Music\iTunes Music, I believe your library can be recovered by closing iTunes, then going to \iTunes and renaming iTunes Library.itl to something like iTunes Library.itl.old, then renaming the most recent previous library from your \Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries folder to Library.itl and moving it to \Music\iTunes.  But I would recommend you post your question over in the iTunes for Windows forum go be sure as they would have more expertise on recovering your iTunes library.

  • Had to change hard drives after failure... How to restore iTunes library?

    Hello-
I had to install a new internal hard drive yesterday in my PowerBook, and am wanting to get my iTunes library onto it. I am still able to access files and folders from my old hard drive, fortunately. In order to restore my library, can I simply just copy my iTunes library from my old drive to my new one, or will there be permissions issues, etc? Thanks in advance-

I was able to do this successfully and see my library w/o trouble. However, iTunes no longer sees my computer as being 'authorized' to play my previously purchased music... Is there a simple way to correct this? I also started another topic related to this here:

  • I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library after updating my iTunes.  Is there any way that I can get these songs back?

After clicking on an update for iTunes, the only change I noticed was the addition of about 9000 sound bytes, which was ridiculous and wasteful.  I started to delete all the sound bytes, but that was going to be a huge chore.  Instead, I moved the songs I had in my library to a playlist called "backup library."  I then chose to "select all" under edit to highlight the rest of the 9000 soundbytes and delete these in one click.  At first, this seemed to work.  I still had the saved songs in my playlist, and the 9000 sound bytes went to the recycle bin.  I then emptied the recycle bin to get rid of the sound bytes.  When I checked iTunes again, there were no songs anywhere in the library or playlists.  Is there any thing you can do to help restore all of these songs (and none of the sound bytes) to my IPOD Classic?  Is my account saved with a back-up of everything I had saved in my iTunes library and playlists?
I have about 1500 songs in my IPOD Classic that are not affected by this error.  Is there a way that I can transfer all of these songs back into my iTunes library?
I would appreciate any help with this problem.

    Hello bigali,
Your options are kinda limited. I would use this first:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and ...
Then check here for the non-purchased items:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022
You want to rebuild the library first, then sync the ipod.

  • How to restore Itunes library from stolen Ipod Touch to a new Ipod touch?

My Ipod Touch 3th gen was stolen. I bought a new Ipod Touch 4th gen. How do I restore everything that is in Itunes library to it?
Should I just give the new device the same name of the other one and sync?
Will that transfer the apps I bought on the old one too?
I also have mobile me account and it was updated 1 day before the robbery. Do I need to do anything about mobile Me?
    Thanks!

You can restore from the backup of the old one.
OR just sync whatever you like to the new one.
You can sync as many ipods as you like to the same computer.

  • How to  restore ITunes Library from Backup hard drive?

My computer crashed. I restored it -- but ITunes was wiped clean. I have all my music files and ITunes Library backed up on an external hard drive. How do I get the library from the external drive back to the computer with playlists, artwork and all intact? I guess it is more complex than just dragging the file labled library into ITunes becuase the computer won't let me do that. When I go to the original songs they are all individually in folders accorging to the artist and album -- that will take days to copy each album 1 by 1 -- I have 3,700 songs.

What you first need to do is Place the music it the Location they was in before you restored. If you had songs on the C drive in My Music folder, place them there. If iTunes was reading the music from the external, not much you have to do sincve there already there.
Now with the Library file you have to make iTUnes take the file and recreate it, this is explained here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313
