How to restore library from a CD backup

Hi,
My PB 12" HD just decide to die last week. So I had to change it, and get my pictures back from a DVD backup I had. The backup is a little bit older that what I had in mind, but it is still better than nothing!
The problem I have is that I do not know how to get back the information I had. On the DVD, my keywords are there, but if I just copy the files to my library, they do not keep their the keywords when copied.
How should I proceed to get my library it was at the time of this backup?
Thanks

Hi,
I've looked on the CD, and finally found out that the format was identical to the iPhoto 5 photo library folder.
So I just copied the file to my HD in My Pictures, then I open iPhoto which ask to translate the library to iPhoto 6.
But after that, I realized that most pictures had a keyword attach to them, but the wrong one. For instance, my travel pictures had the family tag, then some family tag were friends, or something like that... It was the same on the DVD backup, I had just not take attention to it before...
But, since that took back also the folders and album I had created in standard albums, I was able to rebuilt most of the tag without having to look at every pictures one by one in the library... Better than nothing...
Thanks

How to restore Data from past iCloud backup?
Is there a way where i can retrieve my spreadsheets from the past iCloud backup of numbers?

Your Numbers documents were synced with iCloud so they would be stored on the server rather than being included in the backup.  If you were signed into your iCloud account on a Mac that you were backing up with Time Machine, you could restore them from your Time Machine backup.

  • How to restore iTunes from a PC backup?

My PC crashed and I have restored my iPod to my PC iTunes.  Not all of my songs were on my iPod.  I don't have an iTunes backup, but I do have a PC backup on an external hard drive.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
As I understand it if you have a "new" calendar with at least one entry and try to sync this to the device you should be offered the choice to replace or merge with the details on the device. Obviously you want to merge. Backup the device first in case something goes wrong so you can at least restore it to the current state.

  • How to restore library from backup on external hard drive

I am helping my wife move her library to a new computer after the old one crashed. I backed up my wife's music library to an external hard drive by simply copying and pasting all the files in her My Music >> iTunes folder into the external hard drive. When she got a new laptop, I tried placing those same files from the external hard drive into the My Music >> iTunes folder on the new computer (overwriting the few default files that were there), but that didn't seem to work. iTunes does not acknowledge that any songs have been added. I also noticed that almost all of the files say "(protected)", although I'm not sure if that is having an impact on the failure.
Additional information: some of the songs are iTunes purchases and some are from CDs we imported. Because restoring involves more than just iTunes purchases, I can't simply plugin her iPod to the new laptop and use the import purchases feature.
Finally, I see a great deal of information in customer support about restoring from a CD or DVD, but not from an external hard drive, although an external hard drive is mentioned as one way to backup iTunes music, so I believe there must be a valid way. Any literature on that would be helpful as well.
    Thank you.

    EmmanIsaac,
Do you just want a new drive that can be read by Macs and PCs? I would suggest taking a look at MacMall and shopping for, at least, a 1TB drive (they're cheap these days) and, when you get it, format it as FAT32 on a PC. Then you'll be able (with some limitations) to share the drive on both platforms.
For the limitations on using FAT32, see here.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Restored library from Time Machine Backup SIGNIFICANTLY smaller - worry?

Original file size is 235 gigs and recovered is 186.
I woke up yesterday and got a message that my iphoto library was corrupted and needed to be restored from backup. My husband had done something to the printer recently, and I had got an Ipad the day before as well, so either of those things may have had something to do with it, I'm not sure.
Anyway, I verified the internal (and separate) drive that the photos were on and ran it was fine. I restarted and the computer and that didn't help. So I opened the folder where the library was located, then I opened time machine and clicked on Restore and chose the option to keep both libraries, since there was enough room on the drive.
After the restore was complete, I was fortunately able to open my photos. Everything looks normal, but I have 15 years worth of pictures here, so I really have no way of knowing if they are really all there or not, and I didn't have a count before.
Should I be concerned by the filse size difference, or is this likely optimization?

Thank you for your reply. I did what you suggested and compared the Original and Modified folder sizes. They were exactly the same. In fact, I compared ALL the folder sizes, and they are all nearly identical. (I have been poking around in there, so it makes sense that they would be not quite the same.) The ipod photo cache was still there.
I found another post that showed me how to rebuild my iPhoto thumbnails and "uncorrupt" my original library, so I'm going back to the the one with the bigger file size just to be safe. But I've backed up the old and the new version onto external drives just in case.
    Thanks for all your help.

This is for a iphone 4s.
I have located the backup files on my PC, which is under some geberrish file name in my hard drive. I have two backup files, one from 1 week ago, one from this week. How can I choose to restore from the file that I backed up a week ago?
I tried plugging the phone in and go through itunes, but itune only gave me the option to restore from the backup file from this week (which is no good because the new backup file has nothing in it for some reason, 0MB of file ).
    PLEASE HELP!! THANK YOU!!

I think when you elect to restore in itunes it asks you which backup you want to use if you connect your phone to itunes and right click (for PC) then clcik restore you might get to choose

  • Help restoring library from external disk backup

I recently had to reformat my hard drive, and I backed up my entire "Pictures" folder to the external drive. Is there a simple way to restore my library to my original disk and get all of my data back without having to re-import everything?

    Jbooye
    Random answer: Perhaps.
It depends on what you want to achieve...
The advantage to a back up utility such as Chronosync or DejaVu is that they will execute incremental back ups - which is quite handy as your library grows. With incrementation, after the first back up (which copies the entire library) the subsequent runs simply update the library with the changes. This is much quicker with large libraries. Also, depending on the app, you can schedule back ups to run automatically.
But at heart, backing up is simply making a copy of the iPhoto Library Folder...

How do I restore iTunes library from flash drive backup?
    HI Brigdool,
It depends how you made the backup.
If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

  • Restoring iPhoto Library from Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
My iTunes collection and iPhoto library live on an external HD. A week or so ago that external HD failed. Thankfully I have been using TimeMachine to back up to another external HD. Yesterday, I went into TimeMachine, clicked TimeMachine Backups in the TimeMachine Finder and restored my iTunes library to a location on a new external HD. Once the copy was complete, I opened iTunes and all was well. I tried this same process with iPhoto and it didn't not work. iPhoto keeps giving me the message that my iPhoto library is in use by another application or I need to upgrade. I tried holding down the Option key to select the library on my new external HD and that didn't work. I also tried option + command and the option to restore from an automatic backup in iPhoto automatically crashes iPhoto. Then, I launched iPhoto Library Manager and it said my DB file was missing. What's the right process to restore my iPhoto library from a TimeMachine backup (external HD to external HD)?
    Thanks!

It is an option. You can overwrite or keep both when you restore

  • How to restore iphone from backup?

I recently updated to 4.1 but lost all my contacts... how can I restore them from my itunes backup? thanks

Maybe, unless there is a problem with your iPhone's backup and it sounds like there is a problem with it or you wouldn't have lost any contacts.
Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer and should be available on your computer with or without an iPhone or any cell phone. Not a good idea to depend on your cell phone alone for this data, which can be lost or stolen.
To restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, select Restore under the Summary tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. When prompted to update your iPhone's backup, as the first step after selecting Restore, decline this prompt.
Go to iTunes > Preferences. Under the Devices tab, how many backups are shown? If more than one, what is the date and time shown for each backup? If there is more than one backup, you may not want to select the current backup - select a previous backup when restoring your iPhone with iTunes. After the firmware is re-installed, you will be prompted to restore from the backup, which is the default selection. If there is more than one backup available, the most recent backup will be selected by default. If more than one backup is available, you can select from another or previous backup.

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo
