How to restore library from backup on external hard drive

I am helping my wife move her library to a new computer after the old one crashed. I backed up my wife's music library to an external hard drive by simply copying and pasting all the files in her My Music >> iTunes folder into the external hard drive. When she got a new laptop, I tried placing those same files from the external hard drive into the My Music >> iTunes folder on the new computer (overwriting the few default files that were there), but that didn't seem to work. iTunes does not acknowledge that any songs have been added. I also noticed that almost all of the files say "(protected)", although I'm not sure if that is having an impact on the failure.
Additional information: some of the songs are iTunes purchases and some are from CDs we imported. Because restoring involves more than just iTunes purchases, I can't simply plugin her iPod to the new laptop and use the import purchases feature.
Finally, I see a great deal of information in customer support about restoring from a CD or DVD, but not from an external hard drive, although an external hard drive is mentioned as one way to backup iTunes music, so I believe there must be a valid way. Any literature on that would be helpful as well.
Thank you.

EmmanIsaac,
Do you just want a new drive that can be read by Macs and PCs? I would suggest taking a look at MacMall and shopping for, at least, a 1TB drive (they're cheap these days) and, when you get it, format it as FAT32 on a PC. Then you'll be able (with some limitations) to share the drive on both platforms.
For the limitations on using FAT32, see here.
Good luck,
Clinton

  • Restoring itunes from backup on external hard drive

I backed up my itunes to an external hard drive but have been unable to restore my library onto another computer. I wanted to know if the files on my external hard drive backed up my library in case my computers hard drive crashed. Any help would be appreciated.

You've posted in the wrong forum. This is the iPhoto 5 forum, image management, for Mac. Give the iTunes for Windows forum a try.

  • How can i transfer my itunes library from a PC external hard drive to iMac?

I have recently bought a new iMac but my iTunes library is on an external hard drive that is formatted for PC use, this is then linked to my old PC laptop, how can i get the library onto my new iMac?

Drag the entire library to the Mac's internal drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and point it to that library. If the library only contains the music and not the iTunes database files, drag it into the open iTunes application window.

  • How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

    Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
    1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
    2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
    3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
    xanacarfran2008

Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11).  Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

  • Install Leopard OS X from backup on external hard drive?

BACKGROUND: I backed up all the data from my Powerbook G4 onto my external hard drive and then proceeded to completely restore my Powerbook by inserting the Install OS X DVD, holding down C, going into Disk Utility and erasing everything on the drive.
The Install OS X DVD in question is the one that came with the laptop back in 2005. It is Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger). However, a couple years ago I upgraded to Leopard OS X but have since lost that install DVD.
Now that I am trying to transfer all my backed up data from my hard drive back onto my PB, I am running into the problem where Migration Assistant for Tiger OS X only gives me two options to transfer data - 1. Connect to another Mac or 2. Connect to another volume.
PROBLEM: Apparently, I can only connect to another Mac with a firewire cable (which I don't have) and Migration Assistant does not recognize my external hard drive as a "volume" to transfer data from (I can open all the files, just can't transfer them in bulk).
QUESTION: Is there a disk image or something of Leopard OS X somewhere in my backup data on my external hard drive? I'm thinking that if I could only just install Leopard again, I could use the updated version of Migration Assistant and just transfer everything from external HD back onto the PB.
Why I erased everything is irrelevant, trust me. It will just complicate the story more.
    Any advice/suggestions would be GREAT.

QUESTION: Is there a disk image or something of Leopard OS X somewhere in my backup data on my external hard drive?
No, there isn't. If the backup on the external is a *bootable clone* of the internal drive's original contents, you can simply boot from it and clone it back onto the internal drive. If it isn't a bootable clone, it won't do you any good for reinstalling Leopard — but you'll be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your data (as you suggest) after buying a new Leopard installer disc and reinstalling Leopard from that.

  • How to: copys pics from iphoto to external hard drive to share

I scanned about 10,000 historical family photos into iphoto, and now I'd like to gift each of my siblings with a copy of the entire group of photos on a portable memory/storage device. I have chosen to use a portable (external) hard drive (called the LACIE "little disk") so the images will be reliably safe in storage and yet remain easily accessible to the user.
I've never done this before and would be so grateful for any instruction. I'm a little too intimidated to wing-it with a project this big and important to me.
What are the steps to export the entire group to an external hard drive?
One of my siblings uses a PC, and another uses a Mac....does that make a difference?
My thought is that I just have to
    1. create new folder on desktop
    2. go into iphoto, "select" the pics from the LIBRARY>PHOTOS that I want to share
    3. transfer to the newly created folder on my desktop
    4. drag the folder to the Lacie drive (already formatted for PC and/or Mac).
    5. all done!
Is it that simple?? (please say yes). If so, How do I check to verify the pics are readable (openable?) on the hard drive?
Thank you for your time and your patience...and of course, your expertise!
    Cindy

** To clarify, I have FIVE siblings so I will be making FIVE individual transfers...I bought FIVE "LUCIE" hard drives....I reread my entry and I didn't want to confuse anyone about that detail. Only one of hard drives will be used by a PC person, the others will each be for MAC users.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Here's how I would proceed:
1 - for the PC users leave the formatting of the hard drive as FAT 32 (most come that way). If it's formatted for Macs then reformat it as FAT 16 (Macs can't format 32). For the Mac users make sure the format is OS X Extended (journaled).
2 - Add a folder to each little disk.
3 - in iPhoto select the photos you want to send and use the File->Export->File Export menu option. Select the following options: Kind: Original; JPEG Quality: Maximum; Size: Full Size; File Name: whatever of the options you want. If any of the original file names are the same you'll need to use the Sequential option so all the files will have a different file name.
4 - hit the Export button and select the folder on the little disk as the destination.
Do the above for each of the little disks to use used.

See Make a split library portable.
The larger the library and the more playlists you have the longer it takes to process each change in the database.

  • How to transfer pictures from laptop to external hard drive

have multiple events in i-photo and need to transfer to external hard drive have watched tutorials and followed directions only to see an error (null) message
    Any ideas?

well if you are trying to transfer/copy only the events from iphoto to an external drive, and not the entire iPhoto library, all you have to do is select the entire events, or the photos you wan to transfer/copy (select the 1st one, press shift and select the last one) and drag onto the icon of the external hard drive. It might be best to create a an empty folder onto the external.  (command+shift+N)  Once the empty folder has been created, open it on a separate window, and drag the photos into/over the open folder and you will see the green circle with a "+" inside it, which indicate that you will be copying, and not transfering. Et voila! As Gitse said above, it's pretty simple.

How to download data from an external hd ?

You need to copy the data onto your computer and transfer it via that (either via iTunes, or if the app that you want to transfer the data to supports, via wifi). Like the previous reply said, you can't do it directly without a computer being involved.

  • Old Itunes library (from PC) on external hard drive - Mac won't recognise

I feel like I've tried absolutely everything, so hopefully someone here can help.
I had my Itunes library stored on an external disc. This was when I was using Itunes on a PC. It all ran fine....
Now we've upgraded to a Mac and for the life of me I cannot get Itunes to recognise the library.
First I just tried changing the folder location with no luck. Now I've tried holding down alt when starting Itunes, I've located the folder, and at first it seemed all was well as the albums (sans artwork) all appeared in Itunes. But when I try to play them or send songs to my Iphone, it says it can't locate the file. I've tried to then manually point it to the external drive and the old library and it still won't recognise it.
    Can anyone suggest anything??

  • How to transfer photos from iPhoto to external hard drive?, How to transfer photos from iPhoto to external hard drive?

    Hello folks
My start up disk is full and I've been advised to delete some items
from my computer. I have too much pix/videos. How do I transfer them
from iphoto to an external HD?
    Thanks

just move your iPhoto library to the extrnal drive being sure it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine

How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine.
I want to move my itunes library from the mac HD to an external plugged into the time capsule, but I want to be sure this drive will still be backed up by time machine.  I currentlly see no way to do this.

There is no way. You can connect the drive to your Mac and remove it from the Time Machine exclusion list. Then it will be backed up, but that will stop when you reconnect it to the TC. While it's connected to the TC, you can copy it manually to another AirPort Disk by following the instructions here (with a slight modification):
Using AirPort Utility to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

  • I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

I had to erase my hard drive and then reinstall everything back from my passport external hard drive. Now my iPhoto edit is not working. I get a blank screen when I want to edit. The photos show up in the library but I cannot edit them. Help?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    If none of these help:
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Regards

  • My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my iTunes library. Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer? It was the only computer authorized to play library.

My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my saved iTunes library from it. That was the only computer authorized to play library. I do not have an iPod or iPhone with any of that library (which has over $2K in music purchases & over 5K in songs I ripped). Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer?

You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.
