How to restore Mac

So, I was trying to get a Dual-Boot set up with my 5,4 Mac Book Pro (2009), but in the process my Mac run out of battery without a warning, and now there is no sign of my Mac OS X partition or the recover mode partition. I can only see the damaged windows partition. So at this point I'm want to restore. The main idea I have is downloading Mavericks right away, burning it into a cd and installing it all over again. But the problem is that without another Mac I can't download Mavericks. Is there perhaps anyway I could download it in my Linux Computer so that I could burn it into a cd?
I really need help. There is no way to get the information of my hardrive back, I know it's a lost cause, since I have checked using an Ubuntu live cd. There is nothing left. I just want my mac back working...

I just got a MacPro, and this is my 1st mac. With Windows, I had become used to putting in my "restore" disk, and in an hour, my computer was the same as it was when I first took it out of the box.
While I'm sure I wont have many of the issues I had with the PC, I would like to perform this system restore. Can anyone suggest any documentation on how this would work, or if it's even possible?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You should be using Time Machine from which you can restore your system to any previous date.
You can also boot into your DVD and do an Archive and Install, which will essentially put your system back to "day 0" but keep all your settings and non-system files.
However, this is not Windows and you will most likely never need to do that. With windows, reinstalls are needed to remove junk. With a Mac, junk is easily removed and there is no such think as "dll heck" or other such windows things.
I have been running Macs for years and have never needed to restore any or them.

That depends on what you mean by "restore," what system your MacBook Pro came with when it was new, and/or what backups you have taken.

how to restore mac air osx 10.6.7

    Hi Jeannette,
If you have the newest MacBook Air then you would have received a USB "thumb drive" with the OS installation media on it. You'd want to plug that into one of your available USB ports and run the installer. If your MacBook Air is a generation or two old then it would have come with DVD installation media. You'd need an external DVD drive (USB) or to configure Disc Sharing with another computer (Mac or PC).

How to restore mac air late 2010 to its factory settings?

To restore the Late 2010 MacBook Air to factory settings:
    1. Insert the OS X thumb drive that came with your computer, hold the Option (Alt) key while your computer is starting and choose your USB drive.
    2. Choose your language, and go to Utilities menu > Disk Utility.
    3. Select "Macintosh HD" on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk. This will delete everything that it's in the hard drive.
    4. Close Disk Utility and reinstall Mac OS X. Remember to install the iLife applications from the thumb drive after installing OS X

You cannot unless you make your own bootable flash drive. In order to do that you need to download the installer for your model. See the following: Downloading Hardware Specific Lion Installers. After you capture the installer then you can make a bootable flash drive:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • How to restore Mac OS 9 SCSI drivers?

Anyone here know a good way to restore the Mac OS 9 scsi drivers after you do something that messes them up?
I've been trying to get Fedora (Linux) to boot on my old tangerine iBook. One problem I have is that I want to be able to multi-boot with Mac OS 9, but setting up a partition for Linux always kills my ability to boot Mac OS 9. The volume and contents are there and in good condition, I can start classic mode in Mac OS X with no problem, just can't actually boot Mac OS 9.
I was once able, by playing some rather strange games, to re-install the Mac OS 9 drivers after this occurred, but I'm having a hard time remembering how. Anyone here know how?

How are you creating these partitions in the first place? OS 9 had a wide variety of peculiar requirements regarding partition maps and wrapper volumes which I wouldn't expect any Linux distribution to know about, but Disk Utility should still know the rules.

I have a one year old MacBook Pro, using Yosemite OS. In my Mac mail account I use gmail. Hello Nicholas,
It sounds like you are suddenly unable to send email from the Mail app but can log into your webmail and send the emails without issue. I recommend you use the following article, to help figure out what the issue is, named:

  • How to restore Mac OS 10.7.3 from time machine?

Hello I would like to restore my OS to 10.7.2 after the upgrade to 10.7.3.
I have time machine, and backups before and after the fatal update.
But I worked between and created files so I do not want to completely restore my system but only the OS / system part.
    Is it possible ?
How does it work with Time Machine ?
Thank you for your kind help

    Hello John,
    Work done !
it hasn't been as easy as hoped, but it finally worked.
--> install Leopard OS from DVD
--> download and install lion from App Store (already in 10.7.3)
    --> copy of my data
    what a relief, I haven't lost anything.
I didn't understand at first how time machine worked, so it created another user on my new OS.
I wanted to suppess the user, and it took ages, sooo long so I had to shut the computer by holding the power butter 5 secs.
Clean reboot, everything seems OK. I tried to check permissions and there are files with wrong permissions. Just a bunch, but auto repair do not work.
Someone have an idea to repair this ?
The OS is working fine anyway.
    RESULT :
the Wi-Fi is back, and behaves normaly. The computer goes to sleep, wakes, then the WiFi is automatically back.
Well I should try it for a couple of days.
Moreover, the system seems more responsive and faster than before. It was already good, now it is excellent.

  • How to restore mac to single partition?

Im shure this question has been aked before, however I am unable to find an anser to my specific problem.
I am trying to restore to a single OS X Mountain Lion patition on a iMac mid 2011  after allocating 300 GB to a seperat partition for Ubuntu. That 300 GB has been partitioned into 8 partitions, afer 3 or more installs of Ubuntu. When i try to erase the partitions i get errors like too small, un readable, unrecognized, etc. They are all blank. Is there any way to restore to one partition without wiping the hard drive and reinstalling mountain lion and using time machine for data on Macintosh HD partition? If not could you give me pointers and tips on how to wipe, reinstall, and restore to backup?
    Thanks, Kundy
PS the hard drive is 1 tb and 700 GB for OS X has been untouched exept for resize for 300 extra partition.

    You can try GParted.

my mac g5 is not starting up it takes time on start up i have tried to reset PRAM , is not working the same at holding the mac button + v to safe boot is not startng up what is with it?

The "v" key at startup is not Safe Mode. Try holding the Shift key down and restart for Safe Mode. This will disable extensions and help it start. It also checks some things out.
Can you start it up from your Tiger disc? Hold the C key down at startup until you see the Apple.
Your hard drive may be going kaput. Hope you have a good backup.

  • I transferred data from my external hard drive to my restored Mac Book Pro via migration assistant and now my external hard drive in time capsule has red minus signs. How do I get rid of that without getting rid of any of my data?

I used Migration Assistant to transfer my data from my external hard drive via Time Capsule to my restored Mac Book Pro. When I now go into Time Capsule I there are red minus signs in the corner of all the folders that are contained in my back up. How do I get rid of this and access my previous back-ups?

Select the drive and Finder > Get info and at the bottom "ignore permissions on this volume"
You can copy the files, but the ownership on the files still belongs to the other user account, once your done copying, then perform a #6 Reset Users Permissions and that will set all the ownership to that account.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Another method is to copy the entire folder, then change it's permissions.

  • How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac?

How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac OS X 10.6.8?
I have been told you can do this without the Installation CD. I also do not remember the installation CD when i got the laptop. If it's possible then please someone let me know! if not then how can i get a new CD to do this?
my computer keeps freezing on me at random times, and i have tried taking the laptop to my college tech support and also Best Buy and they said they can't do anything and that i need to try resetting the mac.

You may not remember the installer disks but they came in the box. Your profile shows you are running 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. To restore back to factory settings you need those disks. That said to go that route may be unnecessry. Stay away from Best Buy tech people. They know nothing. Without the disks you do a repair disk to see if that helps:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.

  • Mac OS no longer available after trying to remove Windows on Bootcamp. How can I restore Mac OS without the Mac HDD in options?

Mac OS no longer available after trying to remove Windows on Bootcamp. How can I restore Mac OS without the Mac HDD in options?
So what I did was, I had bought my iMac from a shop and asked them to do bootcamp for me. However, they installed 32 bit instead of 64. My fault, I did not make my self clear about it. So after it has been delivered to my house, I realized that I wanted the 64 bit. I tried to remove windows on bootcamp but honestly, I have not experienced this before. So I failed. I believe, I did something wrong.
So I opened the iMac and it keeps asking me to go to windows. Windows OS also corrupted.
I tried the Option Key but the only option is Windows 7 only. So using a different keyboard, I press option and it only shows Windows HDD and the Mac HDD has gone.
What am I going to do? How can I restore Mac OS without the HDD anymore?
