How to restore my computer?

Hi.
I have a problem with my computer. I wanted to restore my computer for some reasons. The problem is that some days ago I opened it and nearly all of the programs and apps were deleted and obviously I don't know why. Even when I open the men Start there are no programs in all the folders in there.
Need help!

Hello Marti
Your only option and of course easiest way to solve this strange issue, is recovery image installation.
After doing this notebook will be the same as on the first day after purchase.
Check the document posted by Timox. There you can find step-by-step instructions about HDD recovery installation.
If everything will be ok and your machine starts properly please, as first thing, create recovery media and make recovery image back-up. You can do this using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator tool.
If something goes wrong with recovery image saved on HDD or the HDD will be defective you will have bootable recovery media that you can use for recovery image installation. This is very, very important for you.
I hope you will be able to reinstall OS on your machine. Some feedback would be greatly appreciated.

can anybody tell me how to restore my computer to an earlier date?

If you have a Time Machine backup or bootable clone from that date, restore it. If not, you can't.

hold c boot from the 10.6 disk, Erase the drive with Security option > Zero: Partition Option: GUID Format: OS X extended J, quit install 10.6, reboot
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3251
Next you'll be in setup assistant,
If the external drive is a TimeMachine drive you can restore, your done.
If TM is corrupt your screwed and need to perform data recovery options. Stop.
If the external drive is a clone, hold the option key and boot from it, setup the internal drive and reverse clone.
    or
If the external drive a clone then set the new machine up with either the same or a different user name depending if the clone is good or bad.
Use the same name if the clone is bad, install your programs from fresh sources on the new drive, transfer files manually from the bad clone.
Use a setup different name if the clone is good, use Utilities > Migration Assistant program on the clone drive to transfer everything over.
You can use a same name with a good clone and chose to reinstall programs fresh and just transfer files you want from the good clone.
If the external drive a storage drive (just files) then set the machine up with the same user name as before and transfer files manually.

  • How to back up computer properly in order to restore to factory settings

Hi! I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro that I think was originally running on Leopard. I had my friend upgrade it to Lion about a year ago (it says it's running on 10.7.5), and it's been running horribly. I want to restore it back to Leopard, so I backed up my computer to a WD Elements portable hard drive. However, I read on one of the forums that a back up won't transfer over to Leopard properly because everything is in Lion format. It also mentioend something about a carbon copy, but I wasn't sure if that was an actual step or just a description.
What steps do I need to take to properly back up my computer properly so that when I restore it to Leopard, everything can be easily added back to the computer? And how do I restore the computer? Would it be better to ask someone at the Apple store to do it or can I do it on my own? I don't think I have any discs that came with the computer (if any did).
Thanks so much for anyone's help! I was getting really confused by all the different discussions regarding this issue.

I think you need to establish what Operating System the machine was originally supplied with, whether, for example, it was shipped with Leopard or Snow Leopard.
In either case there would have been disks supplied ... but you can buy Snow Leopard from Apple today if you tell them the serial number; Leopard can only be bought privately or on eBay or Amazon nowadays.
Not having Lion, I don't know all the implications but I suspect data on Lion will not transfer in its entirety.   There are examples of people with similar problems in 'More like this' opposite your post   >>>>>>>

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

  • How to restore a hard drive through another computer?

My mid-2007 iMac would not load up past the white screen. I tried everything and was unable to get the hard drive to boot up. I took it to the Apple store but due to the age if the machine they would not attempt to fix it. They were not able to boot the computer off an external drive or network. I removed the hard drive to salvage any data I could. I hooked it up to my Mac mini via a SATA enclosure. I was able to remove my photos, music, etc. I now want to restore the hard drive in a last ditch effort to try and save my computer. I have the drive pulled up in disk utility on my Mac mini. I verified the disk and attempted to repair the disk. Both times I received the message: "Error: Unrecognized file system" I am unsure how to restore this disk so I can return it to the iMac and try and get it to load up. Any other ideas?

If the disk cannot be repaired, then try erasing and reformatting it using Disk Utility. If unable, then try with a different disk repair app, such as DiskWarrior, Drive Genius, or TechTools Pro. If still no go, get a new bare HD to put into the iMac.

  • Had to restore my computer and now have music on the iPad that I would like to transfer back to the computer. How do I do this?

Had to restore my computer and now have music on the iPad that I would like to transfer back to the computer. How do I do this? (Operating system is Windows Vista)

This depends, if the music was purchased on the iTunes store you can transfer purchases. If it was not then you would need a 3rd party program in order to rip these files to the computer.

  • I had to restore my computer and I lost all of my songs. How do I get them back?

I did not realize you had to back up your songs so I never did. I had to restore my computer to its orginal state. Thinking that my songs would be safe. I was wrong. How do I get them back?

    You may not.
You buy one and only one download.  it has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Since you have failed to do this, you could transfer itunes purchases from an ipod/iphone/ipad.  Without syncing:  File>Transfer Purchases
You could try contacting itunes support and asking for an exception but they are under no obligation to allow.

ok...so I had to restore my computer back to its original factory state:( now I have lost all my music on itunes. Can I get them back??  if so, how??

You can download everything you purchased from the iTunes Store without having to pay again:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Here is the procedure for your reference, using iTunes 10.7. The procedure and screenshots for newer versions are contained in the above link.
This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Open iTunes and click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
Sign in with your Apple ID, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.

I had to restore my computer to factory settings, this wiped out my itunes and I did not backup. How do I get the music (including music not purchased from itunes) back on my computer?

Assuming the music is sitting on your iPod, try Detune:

Just be careful that you don't allow the "empty" iTunes to wipe your ipod.

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer any other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Copy music
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup. The restore will also update the iOS.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music
