How to restore my iMac?

i would like to retore this to factory settings? - thanks. new 27 inch imac 10.7 4 op system

You can either boot with CMD R held down or the Option key and select your Recovery HD partition.
Once booted there, use the utilities to erase your MacIntosh HD partition and then install Lion.
Beware that this involves another 4 Gig download to install.

Trying to figure out how to restore my iMac 27 to factory settings. I checked the box, and there are no disks to reinstall the OS. I basically need to reset it to factory settings to exchange for a Mac Pro. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to restore my imac from a time capsule

My iMac had its OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks fully deleted and reinstalled in the Aple Store in Haarlem Netherlands yesterday.
Seen severe corruption problems of my KeyChain log-in codes.
Everything restored from iCloud was fully OK such as Contacts, Calendar, Mail, Notes.
But I lost all my iTunes data and iPhoto data, MS Ofiice data such as Word, Excel, etc.
My iMac however was connected through WiFi to a Time Capsule but I really do not know if the Time Capsule was ever set to ON under System Preferences. Or was it simply always set to OFF on my iMac.? .......
Question 1 : How can I find out directly on my Time Capsule if a separate Volume was ever made for this iMac ? And how can I restore that volume - if I find it back - to my iMac ?.
Time Capsule Program on my restored iMac seems to be fully empty. Last date is yesterday and nothing before.
Question 2 : When I connect my iMac directly through Ethernet cable to my Time Capsule I do not know how to find and retrieve (restore)  the speciic volume for my iMac.
Question 3 : how to delete the very old volumes directly on the Time Capsule which are not in use any more since years. ?
Question 4 : Any other suggetions for how to restore iPhoto and iTunes ? From iPhone, from iPod ? Let's not discuss Photostram here now.....
Thanks Apple Store - I seem to have a serious problem

Mavericks does nasty things to the Time Machine backups..
It tends to overwrite everything or certainly to hide it.
If the TM was not turned on, then it could not backup.
Let me recommend you spend the time reading the brilliant stuff Pondini wrote ..
He has specific info about restoring iphoto.
    See here.. http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
But read all the Questions, 14-17 so you understand how TM works..
The instructions for deleting old backups is Q12.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
But don't delete anything as you might at least get partial recovery from those files.
For a full restore or migration see this page.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
It includes setup and migration for OS up to Mountain Lion.
The guy who wrote all this info died before he had a chance to update it to Mavericks.. sadly.. he did a great service to the community.
Conclusion .. do not send stuff to Apple for repair before you make a disk image backup. Never trust Time Machine to do whole computer restores.. and Mavericks is a mess.

  • How to restore files to crashed iMac without Time Machine.

My iMac crashed and I am about to try and recover it with the Recovery partition.  A month ago a pet somehow knocked my Time Machine disk off my desk and I hadn't replaced it.  I have my files back up via BackBlaze as well, but don't know how I am going to incorporate (restore) those files in the proper places later.
Best practices or a utility is what I am looking for.
    Thanks,
    John

Reinstalling OS X is easy. But unless you have a restorable backup of your files there's little you can do to restore them. Read your BackBlaze documentation to find out how you restore a backup made with it.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

I do not think they are selling them anymore, but you can try. Post back your results.
Apple may still supply the original restore CDs/DVDs for a nominal fee.  Have your serial number and model information available when you call them.

  • How do i restore my iMac 21.5 inch desktop?

Ok so i have one of the 2011 Imac desktop models so i didnt get the dvd's. I want to know how to restore/format my computer and start over because its been running really slow lately. i was told by a apple consultant that if you hold in the "option" key on startup of the computer that it will bring you to a point where you can restore but i dont know what to do from there. Someone just please tell me how to restore/format my Imac so that its like when i first bought it. Lastly i would like step by step instructions on how to do this restore/format. I dont have any important files so im prefectly fine with erasing everything.
    Thanks.

    Elaus,
OS X is NOT like MS Windows that needs to be re-installed at the first sign of trouble. If your system is slow there is probably a fairly simple reason such as it doesn't have enough RAM or available HD space. The first thing I'd recommend checking is how much FREE RAM the system has, as a general rule of thumb if it's less than 500MB then a simple RAM upgrade will solve the problem. Keep Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) running. When you notice a slow down open AM and click the System Memory tab and check the amount of FREE RAM. It will look similar to:
If it's less than 500MB then simply upgrade the RAM.

my imac is getting slower and slower and has probems connecting to internet. Any idea on how to restore initial performance? thanks

What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
What version of OS X is your iMac running?
How full is your Mac's hard drive?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?

I bought a mac 2 days ago and transferred some files on there using migration assist which I did not want to. How do I restore my imac to factory settings so I can start again?

Look in /Users folder. You can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, open the lock and "-" delete the account it created.
This is a problem whenever you use migration assistant after the initial install. The proper way to run Migration Assistant is in Setup Assistant when you first boot your Mac. I don't know why Apple isn't clearer about this issue.

  • Hello! How can I restore an iMac 10.6.5 Snow leopard to factory settings?

Hi! How can I restore a iMac 10.6.5 Snow leopard to factory settings?

You can reset the password via Single User Mode or you can completely remove the dslocal database and start over.
If you want to delete the DB and start over (no user data will be deleted), follow these steps:
1:  Boot the machine into Single User Mode (Hold down Command and S keys on boot up)
2:  When you get to the command prompt, mount the file system as writable with this command:
         mount -uw /
3:  Deleting the old Default node...
         rm -R /var/db/dslocal/nodes/Default
    4:   Copying Default node template...
         cp -R /System/Library/DirectoryServices/DefaultLocalDB/Default /var/db/dslocal/nodes/
5:  Removing Shadow Hash files... (depends on history of machine)
         rm -R /var/db/shadow/hash/
    6:  Removing .AppleSetupDone...
         rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
7:  Reboot the machine with the reboot command
That will present you with the setup assistance and no users on the machine.  Create a new account on the machine.

I tried to restore my iMac with my MacBook pro CDs but it's seem it got restored but it say this cd is not supported on this iMac, What could I do to take out the disk?

Also, if you have Lion on the computer. You have a recovery partition on the drive. On startup hold down 'Control' to bring up your startup menu. Select "Recovery HD". That's how you get to it. Lion's recovery partition acts as the installation discs that came with all previous versions of OS X.
