How to restore OS X on Power Mac G4?

A few days ago I installed OS X Tiger, and it booted fine a few times, aside from telling me I need to restart time after time. But it got to a point where it wouldn't load the HDD or a restore disc. So, I completely cleared the hard drive, and I can install and run OS 9.2.1 fine, but when I try to install Panther it either gives me a screen full of kernel errors, tells me I need to restart mid-installation, or more recently gives me a circle with slash through the middle image. What's wrong with my computer?
Computer specs: First generation Power Mac G4 (Yikes!) with 705 mB RAM, 80 gB HDD, 350 mHZ single core standard processor, and standard ATI Rage 128.
-Alex

Bad RAM, or slightly incompatible RAM, ie. PC-100 instead of PC-133, maybe only on one of the sticks.
If you can still boot into OS9, do so and open the Apple System Profiler and report on the RAM. Is it all the same speed, are the sizes what you expect ? when I've had RAM go bad, a bad stick would show up as half-capacity, ie. 256MB instead of the 512MB I know it was, next time the slot wouls show up as empty.
Are there any PCI cards inserted ? like a USB v2 card or similar.

How to Restore Factory Settings on a Mac OS X 10.6.8?
I have been told you can do this without the Installation CD. I also do not remember the installation CD when i got the laptop. If it's possible then please someone let me know! if not then how can i get a new CD to do this?
my computer keeps freezing on me at random times, and i have tried taking the laptop to my college tech support and also Best Buy and they said they can't do anything and that i need to try resetting the mac.

You may not remember the installer disks but they came in the box. Your profile shows you are running 10.6.6 Snow Leopard. To restore back to factory settings you need those disks. That said to go that route may be unnecessry. Stay away from Best Buy tech people. They know nothing. Without the disks you do a repair disk to see if that helps:
Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.

  • How to restore an older copy of Mac on my mac?

Hello everyone, a couple of months ago my macbook died from water damage. I haven't touched in a while and I turned it back on and it works... Now, I made a new fresh Mac start up with OS X Lion (as this is the default for my mac). I have on an external  copy of my mac on a hard drive backed up right before it broke with OS X Mountain or Mavericks, I don't remeber. It has all my games, software and all that on it. My mac has no software currently, and is completely new. I started it up and it when It said "back up to previous mac" I couldn't find my HDD so I decided to do it later. Now, I can't find it and I'm wondering how I can just practically overwrite this mac and use the Mac OS that I have on the HDD?  Cheers!

    Hello Thatguy1233,
It sounds like you have a Time Machine back up of your computer that you would like to restore. You may be able to use the following article to restore that backup:
OS X Lion: Recover your entire system
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph4351
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your backup disk is on a network, make sure your computer is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart, and then hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys while the computer restarts.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” and then click Continue.
Depending on your type of backup disk, do one of the following:
If you use an external disk, select it and click Continue.
If you use a Time Capsule, choose your AirPort network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If you use a network disk, select it and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, and then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, and then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system from a Time Machine backup, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • How do I know if my Power Mac G5 has wireless

I'm helping a friend with their used Power Mac G5 and I'm trying to figure out how to get this thing connected via wireless. I have standard PC wireless stuff, USB linksys wireless dongles and Linksys Wireless router.
I pluged in my USB wireless dongle and it didn't see it as far as I know so I may have to visit their website. I just read here that some G5 towers have built in wireless. How can I tell? I see a little screw hole in the back where a wireless antenna would screw in. Could I just screw in a wireless antenna or so that hole not neccessaryly mean I have it?
    Thanks for any help.

Well - all G5s are prepared for wireless - but the card has to have been installed for it to work.
You can check in Finder - Blue Apple - About this Mac - More Info - Network - Airport Card. If it says 'No Information', you can visually check the card isn't installed in the position shown in Figure 4 here
    http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
If the G5 is not a dual-core ("Late 2005"), you can get a card for it -
or have one fitted if it is a dual-core ("Late 2005") G5

The wireless antenna looks like this

  • How to replace PRAM battery in Power Mac 9600?

Greetings. Need to replace the PRAM battery in a Power Mac 9600. Purchased a new battery, but can anyone tell me exactly how to remove the old one? Don't want to break the black plastic "cradle" it sits in. Thanks very much.

You need to remove the cover/retainer that snaps over the top of the battery holder. Using a very small screwdriver, insert its flat tip between the outside of the socket's positive metal contact and the battery retainer's end. Gently pry outward against the plastic retainer to unsnap it. You may need to do the same at the opposite end to completely pop it off. Once that's removed, you can actually grasp the battery by its sides and roll it up and out of the holder. Otherwise, insert the same small screwdriver under the lip on the outer rim of the battery's positive end, and pry/lift it out of the holder.

  • How to eject a DVD from Power Mac G5 CD/DVD drive?

I already know the trick about holding down the mouse button while the computer starts up, and whatever is in the CD/DVD drive will eject. But that does not work in this case, because my computer will no longer startup. No startup chime. The power light comes on, and that is it. It is possible that the DVD in the drive may be causing the problem, because I can hear the computer checking the drive at startup, and then the startup sequence stops. Besides I need to get the DVD back to the movie rental place.
My old PC had a small hole that you could insert a paperclip in to force a CD/DVD drive to eject, even with power off. I don't see that on this computer (Power Mac G5 [late 2005]).
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

    Hello,
See if iTunes can eject it.
    A Dozen ways to eject a CD/DVD...
    http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/08-2002/08-12.ws
    Might try this...
    >On your main hard drive, dig down into System > Library > CoreServices > Menu Extras. Inside that window, double-click on the icon called Eject.menu.
    http://www.creativetechs.com/tips/quicktips_51.html
And one more way I'd not heard of...
The old iMac didn't have a disk inside, but the mechanism was "frozen" for some reason. I took a long strip of plastic and ran in and out of the superdrive slot; eventually, the drive made that familiar mechanical the usually occurs after ejection.
    Can't eject disk - with a twist!

  • How to restore iPhone to a new Mac

    Hello...
I have a new mac running OS X 10.7.2 Lion and iTunes 10.5. I have not synced my iPhone to it yet. How do i go about getting all my info off the phone and into the new mac. BTW...I have access to the old machine, but I want to start syncing it with the new Mac instead of the old one. The iPhone is a 3G running iOS 4.2. I also have backups of my iCal and Addressbook. I assume there is an iPhone backup on the old machine, can I just move the backup to the new machine and restore it from there? I'm a bit confused.

First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.

  • How to Restore my Privacy Settings on Mac OS X?

Hi everyone, my mate had changed my privacy settings including Master Computer/Admin settings on my Mac OS X Snow Leopard (bought in Sept. 2009 in NY) while I was a away, and obviously now I cant access it anymore. He doesn't remember exactly what he had changed, but when I turn the macbook on, I can't even get it to the password entry point - it is just a big black screen and nothing else.
Is there anything I can do to to solve this situation by myself since I am currently living in a very remote village in Asia where the closest drugstore is hundreds of miles away, let alone an Apple Store?
Thank you very much for you help.

Thank you for your tip, fane, but it didn't work .
I tried it three times, but what ended up happening is that the spinning gear appeared for the first 5-10 seconds, then the monitor went blank for another 4-5 seconds, then back to the spinning gear, and back to the blank screen...and this seemed to go for 2 and half minutes, unitl i gave up and tried rebooting it and trying it again.
From what my mate tells me, he apparently changed the settings in the privacy bar, from like 'read and write' to 'no access' (or something like that) to public, and on, and on putting stricter modes of access for anyone but me, the owner, thinking that this will help me save my (more or less) sensitive data from public better.
I dont know what to do at all, and I'd be most grateful if you would suggest anything else...because I wont be able to get to an apple support place unitl later this year...yet I need my laptop back asap...
    PS
I can see why you'd think "azeri buddhist" to be an axymoron of a sort, but it's really not because I'm an azeri (Turkish) by ethnicity but buddhist by conviction; and since i couldn't come up with anything fancy for my user name, i chose this one.
    thank you.

If you accidently moved all of your event folders to a single one open it up and remove them all one at a time.
I am sorry that it doesn't make since that the folders would just disappear, something else had to have been done for this to happen, they do not just disappear.
Use Time Machine and go back and retrieve the folders.

  • Putting together a Power Mac

I was wondering if anyone had any information (links) on how to assemble or build a power mac. Im considering purchasing the parts, but I wand to know what I'm getting into. My limited search so far has come up with only the specs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! IF you can find the parts and as long as you're willing to spend hundreds or thousands extra to find and purchase all the parts it will probably work but I really don't see the point in spending a lot of money for such an adventure. Tom
