How to restore photos with all albums and metadata to later version of iPhoto?

Hi everyone
I recently had a hard drive crash on my "vintage" 2006 intel iMac. Got the HD replaced but the support service I used was unable to retrieve any of my data off it. Luckily I had all files backed up in a cloud service.
The support service reloaded Snow Leopard onto my new HD but using their own disks, not mine.
I've downloaded my iPhoto Library folder with all photos etc from my backup service and have tried to simply drop it into my Pictures folder to get back everything I had: photos, albums, photo metadata (I'm thinking Ratings in particular).
However when I open iPhoto I'm getting the message "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photos using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto"
I'd appreciate any expert help before I continue. Does this suggest that the support service have loaded an older version of iPhoto than the one I previously had, or could it be the case that they in fact loaded a newer one?
What's my best course of action to fix this? I'm guessing that I could reload Snow Leopard from my own disks without running a disk erase and get back to the version of  iPhoto that I used to edit these photos before the crash - does that make sense?
I am not at all technically literate and well appreciate I may be overlooking or misunderstanding something.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

6.0.6 is the latest version of iPhoto 6.
And no, unless you had iPhoto 08 or some later version already, upgrading will not fix the problem. It's a bogus message. If you did not open the Library with iPhoto 08 or later then the Library is corrupt.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Select you device from the left sidebar of iTunes and navigate to the Photos tab at the top. Do you have the Sync Photos With checkbox checked and set to iPhoto?

How do you move a single album, and not the whole library, in iPhoto to an external hard drive?

File -> Export to a folder and copy it over.
That will give you a folder with the images. There is no way to move an album outside of iPhoto. You would need to have a library containing it.

  • Restoring photos with all adjustments maintained to new mac

I recently got a new iMac i7 with Snow Leopard so I installed Aperture 2 on it and upgraded it to the latest release 2.1.4
I backed up all the photos from Aperture 1.5.6 running on my G5 to a vault on an external HDD and then restored the vault on Aperture 2.1.4 using the Vault --> Restore-Library option.
All my photos appear to be present but none of the adjustments I had made to the RAW files (from a Canon 40D) appear.
How can I restore my Aperture Library on my new mac with all the adjustments intact?
    Thanks

For information, I have resolved this problem.
Aperture libraries between 1 and 2 are not compatible. If you back up a library to the vault in Aperture 1.5.6 as I did, it does not restore everything in Aperture 2.1.4 only the masters, no versions.
The way I solved this was to upgrade Aperture 1.5.6 on my G5 to Aperture 2.1.4 Then backup the library to the vault on my external drive. Then restore the vault on my external drive to Aperture 2.1.4 running on my new intel mac.
This seems to have worked well and all my versions with adjustments are now present.
Apple really should document this as a lot of people on G5s were waiting to get an intel mac before upgrading Aperture. If the new version of Aperture is 64-bit (10.5 and up, no tiger support) then even more PowerPC users running Aperture 1.5.6 will get caught out when they get a new mac and upgrade Aperture.

  • How do I restore Parallels with all files and programs?

My wife has many "scrapbook" files stored on Parallels. I reformatted my Macbook Pro but now I need to restore Parallels and all those files. Anyone know how to save me from the wrath of Cath?
    T.

Do you have a backup of the system on which Parallels was installed? If not, then there's no way to restore it. If you do have a backup you will have to locate all the Parallels folders and files to their respective locations on your system disk. Parallels creates folders for its essential files including the the pseudo-disc in a variety of locations. You will also need to install Parallels again.
Look for the Parallels folders in the /Home/Library/ folder, /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder, and in your /Home/Documents/ folder. Preference files are in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.

Can you start Firefox in [[Safe mode]] ?
You can also do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can initially skip the step to create a new profile, that may not necessary for this issue.

Everything should be on your computer.  Just sync it back.
Did you fail to make sure that everything was on your computer before updating?

It would be nice if you told others the steps you've tried and/or how you used to have your setup.
Anyway have you tried tapping MORE this will then bring you to
the selection-list of Audiobooks, Genres, Compilations & Composers.
Selecting Genres gives you a list of all your music split into genres which was set within the Music downloaded via iTunes or uploaded from CD or which you may have set yourself.
Then you just select the Genre you want:
If certent songs are not correctly gategorised you may need to go into iTunes and reselect via Get-info
    >Info>Genre and change it there. That way you should end up with all songs of Jazz or other in 1 place.

  • If I have say 200 photos in an EVENT and I use 50 of them in an ALBUM and months later I'm happy with the ALBUM and want to trash the 150 extras in part to save space on the hard drive, is there an easy way to find which photos to delete?

If I have, say 200 photos in an EVENT and I use 50 of them in an ALBUM, and months later I'm happy with the ALBUM and want to trash the extra 150 photos, is there an easy way to know which 150 photos to trash? My idea is to not have hundreds of photos taking up space on the hard drive.
    Thanks.

    Various ways:
Easy one: Flag the ones you want to keep (do this in the Album - Select All and Flag)
    Then:
    File -> New Smart Album
Event -> contains -> Name of the Event
Photo -> Is Not -> Flagged
    will find the unwanted 150.

    - What OS is on your computer? you say you have Windows 98. That I think is the problem.
    - Are you importing the photos by:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
    If not how?
the .ithmp are thumbnails, not the full photo

  • How do I put photos in an album and remove them from the camera roll?

I would like to be able to move photos into an album and remove them from the camera roll. Is this possible?
I take many photos of mundane things that I simply want to remember, such as serial number of products. I would like to save these photos for viewing, but I don't want them to appear in my camera roll, where I have to continuously scroll through many such photos to get to the ones that I want to view there.
I know that Apple has a "hide" feature, but it doesn't actually do anything. When I press-and-hold on individual photos, the photos stay in the camera roll: they aren't hidden at all. It's not clear what the purpose of this function is at all.

You don't do this, as the photos are in the camera roll.  That is where they live.  When you make an album you are simply making a list of pointer to your photos in camera roll.
If you remove them from the camera roll, then they are gone.
Photos in albums are not in two places.  They are in only one place, the camera roll.  The album merely contains pointers to those pics, so that you can categorize them however you like.
You should be importing these pics to your computer.  I find it far easier to organize my photos on my computer, then sync them to the iPhone.

  • How to move my entire iphoto library and all albums and mobileme galleries to my new tower?

What is the best way to move my entire iphoto library and all albums and mobileme galleries to my new tower?
I want to move it smoothly without hours of reconfiguring albums and Mobileme galleries.  Already have a timemachine backup of the older iMac with the iphoto library.

Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

I am trying to copy 3 photos from an album in iPhoto to my iPhone. I have tried to move them to PhotoStream. I "select" the photos in the Album and then click on PhotoStream in the "Share" menu at the bottom of the screen. Nothing happens.  I have also tried emailing them tyo myself but iPhoto won't send the email. It tells me it doesn't recognize my ID and password. My operating is Lion on an iMac.

Thank you for responding to my question, above, this morning. And thank you for the link about PhotoStream. It was helpful in understanding how Photostream works, but, unfortunately, doesn't really reference my problem since it assumes that the photos were originated on one of my  Apple devices. The photos I want to copy to my iPhone are in an album on iPhoto but I had originally downloaded them from my camera to my iMac then moved them to the album. The confusing thing for me is that they are 3 of a dozen photos takern over a period of 12 years on different digital cameras (two were taken on film and later scanned and eventually moved to the album in iPhoto) and all but three of the photos moved to photostream and are on my iPhone. It is those three, which were all taken on digital cameras and moved to the album, which I can't get to move to Photostream.
