How to restore sys after disk crash

Have HP Pavillion dv9500 laptop with Vista Op System. I had disk crash. Not recoverable. No recovery disks. I have ordered a refurbished exact same disk drive 120GB. How do I reload operating system onto refurbished disk and get system operable?  I have a windows 7 home op system disk and license. Can I install the windows 7 or do I have to find a vista op system? What are the steps required to make laptop operable again?
Thanks.

Hi,
I don't know the damage of the old HDD therefore can't not say much. Now you've got new HDD, new OS (Windows 7 disc), my suggestion: install Windows 7 to new HDD from scratch and work out how to recover data/files on the old HDD. If no physical damage, you can recover data from it then use it as an external HDD such as put it in an enclosure.
Happy New Year.

  • Problems restoring Backup after disk crash & exchange

Recently, the harddisk in my iBook started acting up and eventually died. I had made a backup three days prior to the crash, so I still have (most of) my data.
I brought my iBook to an Apple repair shop, where they mounted a new hard disk. So far so good.
Unfortunately, I've been trying to put my backup on the new disk for the last five days, without succes.
At first I thought it might have had to do with the diskimage I had, like "unreadable" names, but even after rewriting the image to a read/write one, and deleting or renaming the files that had unfortunate signs in it, I still keep getting an error, namely
" An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory) "
I can't find what's going wrong, I tried everything I could come up with - even simply extracting the files to the disk, but this of course skips most of the hidden files; and when doing this from within the terminal, I still get "Permission denied" errors...
If anyone could help me on this one, I'd be very grateful!
Ah yes, the backup is on an external FW disk, from which I can also boot - which is what I'm doing right now as well; so it's not that I can't write to the disk because it's busy as the bootdisk.

    *\mood happy*
Booting still failed this morning... So I thought I'd delete some files from the image to make it copy faster...
I tried Silver Keeper again (when choosing a source, it asks whether one wants the destination to become bootable); and this time - it worked.
I have CCC as well, but haven't tried it.
Anyway - the disk has now been restored and is bootable, so I'm happy. I'll still have to copy back a few directories (the ones I deleted, together around 40gigs, homemade pictures and movies... Not really necessary for a diskrestore at first, I figured), but it works now.
Thank you again; for helping me, but also for teaching me (indirectly as well) a few things about the Mac filesystem.
*end of report with a successful recovery*

  • Recovery Oracle 10g XE after disk crash

    Hi!
I am trying to recover 10g XE database for my colleague and experiencing some problems that I cannot resolve.
He had mayor overheating problem and disk crash due to the failure of air conditioning.
    OS: Windows Server 2003
    DB Version: 10.2.0.1.0
After disk crashed I've managed to save image of Oracle data files and tried to recover database using them.
Database was not running in archive log mode so all files that I had were database files, control file, parameter file and redo logs.
First error that I experienced on newly installation of Oracle Express Edition (10.2.0.1.0) was:
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
ORA-00227: corrupt block detected in control file: (block 16, # blocks 1)
    ORA-00202: control file: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\CONTROL.DBF'
By default Oracle XE creates just one control file so I had just one incarnation of control file and apparently that file was corrupted so I tried to recreate control file.
With "ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE" I've created script for new control file but after script execution received error.
    SQL> @c:\ctlfile.sql
    ORACLE instance started.
Total System Global Area 188743680 bytes
    Fixed Size 1286460 bytes
    Variable Size 62918340 bytes
    Database Buffers 121634816 bytes
    Redo Buffers 2904064 bytes
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "XE" NORESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
    ORA-01110: data file 4: 'C:\ORACLEXE\ORADATA\XE\USERS.DBF'
    I also tried to use:
"CREATE CONTROLFILE SET DATABASE "XE" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG..." in script but received the same errors.
Apparently database name is wrongly written in header of USERS.DBF and I don't know how to overcome this problem. Possible character set problem or data file corruption...
I used "CHARACTER SET AL32UTF8" character set.
I don't have any RMAN backups because all tapes were destroyed along with tape drive due to the air conditioning failure what caused overheating of small server room.
So if you have any idea how to open database I would be grateful for help.
    Thanks!

Unfortunately this Metalink note is not solution to my problem.
My problem is database name written in the file header which is - "\E":
ORA-01161: database name \E in file header does not match given name of XE
It is obvious that database name stated in control file is not "\E" and because of that create control file script fails.
I don't know is data file corrupted and because of that I have in file header "\E", or this is some problem due to the character set, or XE Oracle software version, or something like that.
    Anyway thanks for your help!
    Regards,
    Marko

  • New HD after disk crash : how restore original partitioning scheme

Hello, After a mechanical disk crash, american version, I have to replace the hard drive of a X220, american version. Windows 7 Pro was in English.I have two VHD files backup to an external drive, as well as a repair disk. One VHD file is 348 MB and one 199 GB.I could check that the second one contains Windows 7 with software and user files.I assume that the first VHD file is the EFI partition. Because of the mechanical failure there is of course no "recovery partition".I do have a CD of Windows 7 Pro in French if required, but I assume the VHD files should suffice. My question is : how to restore the original partitioning sheme?Which is the size of partitions in bytes and in which order are they? Can someone post the output the partition table (for instance Linux's  "gdisk -l" from a bootable CD or USB key) for an X220 ? Thanks a lot.

Pete291 I am showing a Photoshop CS6 full version serial number for Windows under your account at http://www.adobe.com/.  Please make sure you are utilizing the serial number which ends with 94.  You can find more details on how to locate your serial number at Find your serial number quickly - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html.
If you are using the serial number registered under your account then you can please provide additional details.  Why are you reinstalling Photoshop CS6?  Did you restore/migrate/transfer/copy files previously to this installation?

  • How to restore files after a Hard Drive crash?

I just had my Hitachi 320 Gb Macbook HD crash (out of the blue started clicking when restarted, and the folder with question mark appeared).
Good news is that I have a duplicate of the entire HD (using Retrospect "duplicate" function) from about a week ago.
I have installed a new HD in my MacBook and I'd like to restore all my old files without losing any bookmarks, preferences, having to re set up email etc.
I thought I could just drop the whole Retrospect duplicate on to the HD but that didn't work, then I loaded the OS X disc (10.5.6) and tried getting everything on to the HD using Migration Assistant, but nothing showed up in the Migration Assistant box......?
I know all the data I have backed up is good, I'm just looking for the best way to avoid having to manually drag everything over in case I miss ssome things, or there are some preferences etc that are stored someplace and I miss them?
Also, does the user name have to be exactly the same for this to work (my name was mis spelled by one letter on the old HD, should I make my new user name match?
    Thanks for any help!
    Alan.

Boot from the external drive that contains the duplicate. Use Disk Utility to prep the new drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting is completed use the Restore option of DU to restore your clone to the new hard drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the new drive.
    Source means the clone drive.

  • Restored tabs after a crash are very old tabs, not my last session: how to fix this?

Whenever Mozilla crashes, which is often, my most recent session is NOT restored!! I get the oops page with 2 options: restore session or start new. I click restore session and instead of bringing me back where I was with the video I was watching that crashed in the middle, it brought me to about 12 videos prior! :-/
Can you guys fix this on your end? Surely it must be a Firefox glitch as this is new of this week: all 3 times my internet has crashed as done this whereas in the past, I'd be restored right where I left off. This is a huge problem: I nearly had ebay automatically purchase the same thing again due to reopening to a purchase page tab that had ALREADY BEEN CLOSED and my newer tabs from session that crashed with all my work (composing at blog or forum posts) are nowhere to be found. HELP, please!

If you experience one or more of the following problems with Firefox 23+:
    * after a crash, Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session does not restore the last session, but restores the session before that one;
    * YouTube videos always start muted,
    then try this:
    # In the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/awesome-bar-find-your-bookmarks-history-and-tabs Location bar] type '''about:config''' and press <Enter>.
    # In the Search box at the top, type '''browser.sessionstore'''.
    # In the resulting grid, double-click on all lines shown in '''bold''', to set their ''Status'' to '''default'''.
    # In particular, verify that ''browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash'' has been set to '''true'''.

  • Restoring mail after a crash from original system disk

I recently had a system disk crash.  It was not hugely terminal - I can still read the contents of the drive, I just can't boot from it.
I have installed a new copy of osX on my computer and so I have an installation running and can see the old system disk as a hard drive on the finder.
I would like to retrieve my old mail files.  Can I do this?
Alas time machine had a disk failure shortly before my system disk crash, and so I cannot restore from that backup.  It never rains, but it pours.

I agree with Akuma. It is definitely not Toshiba related issue and you should try to check some Microsoft forum and try to find final answer.

  • Reconnect to existing Time Machine after disk crash?

    Hi guys!
My GF's MBP disk crashed a few days ago.
We've been backing it up to a NAS for the last few months.
Now, after replacing the disk and reinstalling OSX Mavericks, we want to make Time Machine use the old sparsebundle as it's backup target.
You know, pick up where it left and so on.
Problem is we dont know how to do that.
The Time Machine prefs seems to only want to let us choose the VOLUME - not a particular existing archive.
    Isn't this possible?
Honestly, it would be surprisingly impractical if it isn't.
    Thank you for constructive replies!
    Cheers;
    Eivind

Thank you Eric for your fast answer.
this worked and now I have a running SL system. I guess I try to install maverics first and then use the emigration assistent to recover my data.
Still its a pitty that the time machine backup didn't do what it was supposed to. The workarround is very timeconsuming and leaves some concerns about my data and the future safety of time machine backups.
    Regards

  • Restoring itunes after a crash

    Hi, fellow itunes users!
A few months ago,I expierenced some major crashing problems. My computer went down, and I lost ALL of my files and docs, including itunes!
If you have any tips on how to restore it, that would be great!

Help! I think my Dell laptop memory maxed out while playing Holiday playlist, iTunes started skipping, so I closed everything out and powered down. This morning, iTunes came up totally empty, no playlists, nada... I did the restore iTunes library procedure a couple times, no luck either. I do have a remote HD with all music files backed up but don't think I have iTunes library files backed up. I might have prior iTunes library files from several years ago, but I've added tons of music and customized playlists in recent years. I suspect iTunes bonked when memory ceiling was reached, so I relieved the memory space condition. How do I restore my vast playlists? Any help much appreciated at Holiday time..

  • How to restore documents after a clean install when location is not known?

I have had some troubles with my computer recently and the person at the genius bar said I should wipe my drive clean and include everything except my library folders and system folder. The only thing I don't know how to restore is documents that aren't stored in a known location in the finder. What I mean is programs like LittleSnapper or Macjournal that have their files contained with the application (in another words I don't go to the Finder to save or open these documents.)
I did a search for some files from "Things" and it looks like these get stored under the library. Therefore if I choose to not restore the library (like the Genius said) wouldn't I lose access to these files?! LittleSnapper appears to save it's files in a hidden folder on the hard drive called "private". How can I restore that folder if I don't even have access to it?
Do I just export the files from these programs to the finder and then reimport them later? "Things" doesn't even appear to have a way to export it's files that I know of.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide in this matter.

"No program keeps stuff in the private folder."
The reason I thought that is if you open a LittleSnapper screen shot in Photoshop or where ever and then command click on the windows title it shows the private folder on the file's path.
"Before you do reformat, try creating a new user account. See if you're problem still exist within that new user."
Yes I still have the problem with the new user account.
