How to restore TimeMachine backup under 10.6.8 to Lion OS

Hello.
My old laptop running 10.6.8 ("Snow Leopard") was stolen a week ago Monday. I have an external hard drive full of Mac "Time Machine" backups (a whole backup, then a bunch of incremental ones, etc.) Because I used FileVault on my own user (hereafter "User A"), whenever I made these Time Machine backups I logged into another administrative user account ("User B") for the purpose of backing up. That way I wasn't trying to back up an in-the-process-of-decrypting user from within that user.
So my laptop was stolen, and the new laptop I bought is running 10.7.2 ("Lion"). I used Migration Assistant with Time Machine and got some applications back; no User A data came back (not surprising; it was encrypted, after all.)  I then made my two administrative users and tried, from User B, to restore User A. My applications came back but nothing from the user folder: no documents, music, movies. There was a little red notation: "Cannot restore an encrypted folder."
I tried to reinstall Snow Leopard on my laptop using the CDs but the computer made a horrific beeping noise. From some Internet research, the closest I came to a solution was to go into the Time Machine backups and find and load the most recent sparseimage (of my old user A). I was able to load this sparseimage and open it and so forth, but I have been virtually unable to copy anything from it to my new hard drive. (One of the errors I keep getting is error -36.)  I had to copy my documents practically item by item. Photographs are impossible, as is music. I've been warned *not* to copy things one by one but to find and use an algorithm to restore the user and its files, so I stopped the item-by-item copying.
More nosing about on the Internet using terms such as "time machine", "snow leopard," "lion," "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle", and "downgrade" yields so many help articles that don't *quite* address my quandary that I don't know what to do.
Any thoughts?
(I am deliberately not posting every detail so as not to use up group bandwidth; if you need any more information, please contact me and I'll be happy to provide any missing information.)
Thanks in advance for whatever tips you can offer.

This issue has been solved.  Someone on another group advised be to do the following:
1.  *Copy* the relevant user from the TM backup to the laptop.
2.  Use a slightly older version of the user.
When I did this, I was able to recover almost everything.

  • How to restore the backup which we taken from db13 ?

    Hi .........
I am taking full back up from DB13 to hard disk and tape drive every day.
Please tell me how to restore this backup which is taken from db13.
    4.7E, MSSQL , Windows 2003 server.
    Gayatry.

If its the same server you took the backup from the backup history for the DB will be stored against it. If its a different server you will need to catalog the backup tape to read in the history/contents.
Lets assume its the same server, with the same file locations.
From SQL Ent Mgr - with SAP stopped.
    right click  the DB
    select restoredb
select the set you want to restore from the history
select the options you need (ie leave off line for addition TL restore, or bring online)
It really is that simple - you cant go wrong (assuming you select the correct set!)

How to restore my backup in my macbookpro from external drive

    Hello Jayrajjpatel,
It sounds like you have a Time Machine backup on an external drive that you would like to use to restore your computer. The following article will help you get that done, named:
OS X Mavericks: Recover your entire system
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14185
If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, repair or replace the disk before following these instructions.
Make sure your Time Machine backup disk is connected and turned on. If your disk is on a network, make sure your Mac is on the same network.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
Select “Restore from a Time Machine Backup,” then click Continue.
    Do one of the following:
External backup disk: Select it, then click Continue.
Time Capsule: Choose your network from the AirPort menu on the right side of the menu bar, and then select your Time Capsule and click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
Network backup disk: Select it, then click “Connect to Remote Disk.”
If necessary, enter the name and password you use to connect to your backup disk, then click Connect.
Select the date and time of the backup you want to restore, then follow the onscreen instructions.
After you restore your system, Time Machine may perform a full backup at the next scheduled backup time. This is normal. Time Machine resumes incremental backups after the full backup is completed.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • How to restore specific backup file from RMAN?

    Hi,
I am just begginer with Oracle DB so I do not have a lot knowledge.
I created two backups at April the 8th and April the 10th.
    I did following from RMAN.
    shutdown immediate
    startup mount
    configure channel 1 device type disk format '/opt/oracle/backup/std_%U';
    backup database
    startup
    output was:
including current control file in backupset
    including current SPFILE in backupset
it created two files: std-0so6l0vn(2 GB) and std_0to6l106 (7 MB).
First question - first file is backup and what is the second file???
Today I created also backup and it also created two files: std_0uo6morg (2GB) and std_0vo6morv (7MB)
    Now I want to return backup from 2 days ago (*std-0so6l0vn*) but can't;
    I do the the following:
    shutdown immediate
    startup mount
    restore database from '/opt/oracle/backup/std_0so6l0vn'
but getting error - only SPFILE or control file can be restored from autobackup.
How to restore my backup from two days ago? It looks to me so complicated and hardly understandable.
What command to execute from RMAN to succeed in restore?
    Thank you

I still can not restore database; I tried Honza method.
    i try
    startup nomount
    restore controlfile from 'restore controlfile from /opt/oracle/backup/sss_11o7efd9_1_1';

  • How to restore a backup from 32G device to 16G iphone

I lost my iphone5 few days a go, and then I bought a new 5s. But I didn't remember which capacity I used for my iphone5. I thought it was 16, then I bought 5s in 16G. When I got home, I tried to restore my 5s with the backup from my lost phone on iTunes. However, it said to me that my phone doesn't has enough capacity for restoring. I would like to have my photos and messages back, not necessarily all the apps, so what can I do?

You will need to select via iTunes, what you want to restore. Look under USB synching:

  • How to restore MobileSync Backup from Hard Drive to new iTunes?

I am in serious need of help!
My laptop which had Windows 7 running was crashing down after 4 years. When I brought it to the service center they took my internal drive out to save all the data before too late.
The problem is I never had the chance to backup my iTunes properly, and now that I'm usiing a new computer, how can I possibly retrieve all the old data?
The internal drive from the older computer has now been made into a hard drive. I just downloaded the same version of iTunes I was using on this new computer, but how can I possibly restore my older iTunes library. I don't care very much about the music actually, but the mobilesync backup, like messages, notes and etc.
    Thnaks in advance!

What "new system" did you reinstall?
Are you upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard?
Or did you reinstall Leopard?  If so, why and how (that may provide a clue)?
How is your Mac connected to the Time Capsule (use Ethernet for best results)?
You may need to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How to restore a backup from TM to a ssd?

    Hello folk,
I'd like to change my HD with a 250 SSD but, before I buy it, I want to be sure that I can restore my backup, which actually is on a NAS (Network Attached Storage), to the brand new SSD.
Is it possible? I read that I shouldn't have any problems but I want to be more than 100% sure since I don't want to waste money
In case it's possible, how can I do that?
Do I need to have already installed on the new hard drive the same OS version of the backup, or I could simply restore to the raw ssd?
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniele

This additional backup you mentioned could be saved, for example, on a external USB storage?
Moreover, in the article you linked, at the "Restore an entire system" section, it's written that I would need to use the Recovery mode.
So, in order to answer my last question ("Do I need to have already installed on the new hard drive the same OS version of the backup, or I could simply restore to the raw ssd?"), I'd definitely say that I do need to have already installed any MacOS version on the new SSD so as to restore the entire system, right?

Does anybody know how to restore an icloud backup with i.os 7.1.2 version to a new iphone5 with ios 7.0.4 version?

Set up the phone as a new phone, not from the backup. Go to Settings > General > Software Update, and perform the update. Then go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to repeat the setup, and this time choose Restore from backup.

  • How to restore Database backup on existing ora DB on different machine

I have question, which is dancing on top of my head about the Restore in Oracle10g, Windows server/XP?
I have backup of Oracle 10g DB (BACKUPSET), I want to restore that backup to my local machine on windows xp. The backup I copied from PROD to DEV/XP machine to perform restore. IN PROD we have configured RMAN and obviously it is having 4 OS Drives; 2 of them configured for DATAPUMP and BACKUPSET.
I want to Restore the exisiting backup from the PROD to Dev/XP (my local machine) which is having only one drive that is c:\oradata\
RMAN is also configured on Dev/XP machine. So please give me step by step process to do the successful restore on Dev/XP machine.
I know, I can do the Datapump (export from PROD and import to XP), but I want to do only restore process.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

First of all, you need to make sure that your production and test system are running the same OS (that is: your production db needs to run on WinXp as well), or, at the very least, they need to have the same endianness
Assuming that they are, here is the link to RMAN restore/recover: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/recov.htm#i1009223
I'm guessing one of the things you want to do is: change data file locations on the new machine. You can find how to do it i.e. here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/recov004.htm#sthref585
    Good luck

  • My backup password is forgot how to restore my backup

my backup password forgot how to restore

You can still do backups but to restore you need the password.
If you forget, you cannot use the backup., youhave to start as new.
    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.
