How to retrieve a video corrupted by Aperture?

Hi,
Earlier today I exported a video from my Aperture library to my desktop, but I got an error message saying that the process did not complete and now the only thing that's left in Aperture is an image preview with a yellow triangle. Aperture says it cannot locate the reference file and there is nothing on the desktop either. I tried to explore the database, but the .mov file has gone from the masters folder. I tried to repair the database, but it did not work. I tried to use data recovery software, but they did not find any trace of that video. I am not using vaults. I looked on the Internet for similar cases, but could not find anything. The video was made from an iPhone 5, but I did not have an iTunes backup so I can't get it back that way. I tried anyway o recover data from the iPhone's flash memory, but the videos are gone. My last Time Machine backup does not include a copy of that movie either...
Can you please suggest how Aperture managed to corrupt my precious file through a failed export and how I might be able to retrieve that video? The original movie file must still be on the HD somewhere in one form or another.
For your information, I use Aperture 3.4.3, the library is 243GB large, the video I exported was 105MB. My MacBook Pro is running OS X 10.8.3. I've been using Aperture for about 2 years and never had this issue before.
Thanks

I have just opened a bug report. Here is the content for information:
Hi,
I would like to report a bug with Aperture 3.4.3. It is the same issue as reported by another user under reference case #13497037.
On 31/03/13, I exported a video out of Aperture. The file was originally created by an iPhone5 in full HD. Its name was IMG_159.MOV and it was 105MB large. I selected the file in Aperture and exported the original to a folder on the desktop based on the project name and version name. Aperture started the export process, but after a short while I got an error message saying that the export had failed. Immediately after the message, a yellow triangle appeared on the video and it will not play anymore.
Upon exploration of the library package, I can find the thumbnail, but the master has gone. I tried the 3 different option to fix the library without success. I tried the different options to reconsolidate masters, but Aperture just says no masters can be located. I then scanned my entire disk with a data recovery software (Wondershare Photo Recovery 3.0), but it did not find any deleted or active master file (it did correctly find the thumbnail in the library).
That video file was not backed-up yet so for the moment I have completely lost it, which is a problem as this was an important video.
Later on the same day I did 2-3 other exports in the same conditions and they worked fine.
Then, on 01/04/13, I exported another video also made from an iPhone5 in full HD called IMG_154.MOV that was 346MB large and that also included my preset IPTC metadata. The process failed exactly as described earlier and now that file is corrupted too and the master has disappeared.
I then tried to export another few videos in the same way and the problem has not occurred again yet.
I did not notice the size of my library going down and another complete computer scan with my data recovery software did not reveal any deleted files, so I do believe that the masters of my 2 corrupted videos are still hidden somewhere inside the library.
Can you please assist with the recovery of these masters. I have spent some time on the Internet and I have personally come across a few users who seem to have experiences exactly the same issue, so this is not an isolate problem. However, so far it has only happened randomly on my machine.
Thanks

  • How do I remove video duplicates from Aperture?

I now have many duplicates of videos in my Aperture library, taking up lots of hard disk space. Is there a best practice method of deleting these duplicates?
    Many thanks for any help!

Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

How do I retrieve a video from my iphone 4s

There are 2 ways for you to recover deleted videos from iPhone:
Solution 1.Scan and extract iTunes backup to recover videos from iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS
Step 1: Select the device backup to scan
Step 2: Recover deleted iPhone videos
After the scan, the whole backup content are extracted and also displayed. You can check the video which is in .mpeg format in general, and click "Recover" on the top menu to store it on your computer with iPhone Data Recovery.
Solution 2.Directly scan and recover deleted videos from iPhone 4/3GS
Step 1:Connect your iPhone to the computer
Launch the recovery software on your computer, and connect your iPhone to the computer with a digital cable.
Step 2:Enter the DFU mode and scan iPhone
Enter the DFU mode with your iPhone:
    1. Hold your iPhone and click "Start" button.
    2. Pressing "Power" and "Home" buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds.
    3. After 10 seconds, release "Power" button, but keep holding "Home" for another 10 seconds.
When you're told that you've entered the DFU mode, release the "Home" button
Step 3: Preview and recover deleted videos from iPhone
When the scan over, all your data on your iPhone or lost from iPhone are found and listed in organized categories.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll are included with the iPhone's backup. If your iPhone's backup was updated since the video was captured and the backup has not been updated again since it was deleted from the iPhone, you can try restoring your iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup. Don't update the backup before doing so.

  • How to move all videos out of Aperture and in to iMovie?

I have a MacBookPro with a 240 GB SSD for OSX, apps, etc. and a secondary itnernal HD that is 1TB.
    Remaining space as of today:
    240GB SSD = 130 GB free
    1TB HD = 103 GB free
My Aperture library (managed) resides on the 1TB and measures 139 GB on disk.
How can I effectively "move" all of my videos out of the Aperture library and in to my iMovie library?
My goal is to slim down my Aperture library to be able to move it on to the SSD for better performance. In addition, I rarely find myself referencing or modifying video in Aperture, almost exclusively using iMovie for video.
    Thanks for advice!

With these stats, I would expect that you need to make your Aperture Library entirely Referened, and not any Managed, unless you have mostly video in it.
The process would be to use the Relocate command to move masters from the library to folders elsewhere on the 1 TB drive, and then simply copy the parred down library to the SSD drive in the Finder -- drag and drop will work.
I am not sure the connections will survive, and you might find the need to reconnect to all the referenced files, which is not hard to do, once the library has been moved to the SSD.  You need always a good measure of free space on the drive with the library, as space is used for many housekeeping tasks, including conversions associated with any future updates to Aperture.
The Relocate command will work with either photo or video files.

  • Videos corrupted in aperture,lion.

Had to move entire library from external firewire drive to my desktop to finally keep it from crashing.  Now i can run aperture and my photos appear intact from what I can see but many of my videos are pixelated mess on the preview and none of them will run.  I copy to desktop and they still won't run.
I have never had a single problem with aperture prior to lion installation.  Now I don't know what to do with aperture photos everywhere and videos all messed up.
    anyone with similar issues?

I am seeing the same thing.  Installed Lion and ran aperture.  My videos have jumbled thunmnails (looks like static) but will not run.  Some photos graphs in the wrong spot as well now.  I looked at my Librabry file size, and it said approx 76 GB.  I looked at the size of the Library on my most recent Time Machine Backup, it said over 100 GB.  I copied the 100 GB library over to the proper location and reloaded the library (option while loading Aperture to choose active library), but the video thumnails are still jumbled (can't run them) and photos are still in the wrong place.  Aperture is runnning like a PIG now, so Slow.
I'm not sure what is to blame... Lion's MIgration assistant (yes, I did do the update shortly before Lion was released), Time Machine or Lion itself.
Thanks Apple.  If there is one thing I don't want to lose in case my House burns down, it's my Photos and Videos.  But you Fracked them up good for me.  Now I know I can't trust Apple with my family memories.   Luckily I subscribe to an online backup service, but it's going to cost me hundreds to get my library back from this service.
    I am one angry customer.

  • How to retrieve deleted videos from iphone 5

I lost a really important video. i belive the video stooped after the entire data storage was full. I remember it was saved, however i still needed to make more videos so i decided to quickly delete junk photos and videos. In doing so, some of the videos turned black however i rember i could see how long they were. I think i deleted that important video because after i deleted some, i couldnt find it. I am very sad as i need the video. I made the video, got deleted. Couldnt even back it up or anything. didnt have an icloud backup on i believe. Tried multitude of data recovery softwares from online, however in their scan, they couldnt find that video. PLEASE HELP!!! PLEASE!! It is an iphone 5 on ios 7.1.2

Without a backup, there is no way to recover. iCloud does not backup video, you would need to have imported it to the computer. The video is gone, sorry.

  • How to retrieve lost videos

So I recently deleted vacation movies from iPhoto, not realizin that they also delete automatically from iMovie as well.
My project was saved, but I can't see the clips because it says source clip is missing.
Is there a way to get all my footage back, because all the footage I have is on the iMovie clip, it's just deleted from the computer.
    Help!
    Thanks

Restore your backup copy of the iPhoto library made just prior to the deletion.
Otherwise, you'll have to use file recovery software like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to search for and recover the deleted video files (if they haven't been overwritten in the meantime).
FS will run in demo mode to show you what files it can recover before you have to purchase it.

  • How can I upload video from my Canon ZR900 DV onto my my MacBook Pro?

I have system 7.5.5 and plugged my camera into my MacBook Pro using the proper firewire cable (since both ends seemed to fit into their proper places) but now I have no idea how to retrieve the video from my video camera.  Does someone have any idea how I can get this to show up so I can watch this on my computer screen, rather than the small screen on the camera?
    Thanks!
    Erik

    Hi Erik,
In order to import video from your DV camera into your MacBook Pro you will need an application designed to do this. Fortunately you should have iMovie on you computer and that is one of the many things it can do. See this video that shows the process -

  • Mac Pro with X1900XT and video corruption

    Hi gentle people
My Mac Pro arrived a few days ago. It's a CTO with a X1900XT and Aperture and some other options (wireless, RAM, HDD).
I'm really excited about the package and the out-of-the-box experience but yesterday I noticed video corruption in Aperture. It looks like a repeating pattern of green and purple dots.
Today, I investigated further and I noticed these things:
-The dots are in the video memory (can be caught in a screenshot), so it's not a problem with the display.
-The dots can stick around everywhere on my screen, not only in Aperture.
-Google Earth and Quicktime both also display video corruption in the same way.
-The TechTool program from the Applecare disk doesn't find a problem. I guess this is because the memory problem is not situated in the frame buffer but somewhere else in the 512MB. For example, on a location where textures (for Google earth and Aperture) are stored.
-Temperature has no influence; the corruption is there even after a cold night and a cold boot (from power off).
-Apart from this, my system seems stable. No crashes yet and I have about 12 hours on the counter.
-Changing resolutions or SMC reset didn't do anything to improve the situation.
My conclusion: my X1900XT has a bad memory chip or is otherwise defective.
Lucky me; I also bought Applecare. I'll be calling them tomorrow to see what they'll do about this.
What is others people experience with this kind of problems?
Will they send me a good X1900XT by mail? Or will I have to bring in my computer? Arghhlll... Such a beauty with a little rough spot
    Kind regards
    Koen
    Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac Pro - X1900XT - 4GB - 500GB - AE+BT - 30"CD

    Hi there kolson
That picture you're showing seems awfully familiar. It's the same kind of corruption as I'm seeing. Only I haven't had a single lockup yet.
I've been on the phone with Applecare this evening. It was a friendly guy who helped me through the basic stuff such as:
-Use the other DVI output on the video card
    -Use another monitor
-Log in as a different user
    -Reset PRAM
    -Reset SMC
-Apple hardware test (no problems found)
-Techtool deluxe from the Applecare cd (no problems found)
-He also asked me to boot in safe mode. I was unable to reproduce the problem this time but the machine, particularly graphics, were very slow. Aperture wouldn't even function correctly. I believe that in safe mode, no hardware acceleration is used so the video card is not stressed at all and the CPUs get to do all the drawing which is why the thing was so slow.
The call ended after this but I have a case number and will be calling tomorrow to see what to do next.
I stay with my previous conclusion: there's something wrong with the video card. It's clear that the display is of no importance because I can capture the dots in a screenshot.
Good luck! I'll try to keep this thread updated.
