How to retrieve emails from external drive?

The short version is, I made a bootable copy of my malfunctioning internal HD on an external drive. Sure enough, a catastrophic failure ensued, requiring the installation of a brand new HD. In the process of moving everything important (pictures, movies, documents, etc.) to the new drive, i'd like to get my old mail inbox and mailboxes over there as well. I found them, but short of forwarding each message individually, how can i transfer that stuff? I've tried "File/Import Mailboxes..", but that didn't work, each time i get "No valid Mail for Mac OS X files were found". I don't know if i'm doing something wrong or not, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Milomo.
If you haven't got any new mail you need to keep yet, then...
Quit Mail, drag this file from the old location to the new location...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Then move this folder from the old location to the new...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/

  • How to retrieve emails from a dead Mac?

My mid 2010 Mac Pro running OS 10.7 has died ( logic board)
    I have replaced it with a 2011  i5 3.1ghz  iMac running OS 10.8
I have put the SSD drive from the Mac Pro into an external USB case.
Is it possible to retrieve my emails from the old drive used in the Mac Pro to the Mail App on the iMac even though the two Macs use different OS?
I found I cannot access Mail on the old drive as the operating system is different and therefore won't open.
    Any help gladly accepted.

    Hi Loner T,
Thanks for your quick response. Yes the SSD was my boot drive on the Mac Pro.
I have now plugged it via USB external case into the iMac.  Next I went to system preferences and change the boot drive to the SSD one.
Wonderful.. I now have access to everything on this drive.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do I restore from external drive, with outdated back-up  software?

I mistakenly kept using my LaCie external drive's Silver keeper softerware after upgrading my Mac OS. My SilverKeeper version is 1.1.2, which I now know is incompatible with my Mac 10.4.6. (Maybe that is why I got an error report when I
ran the Mac diagnostic disk on the LaCie.) In any event, after suffering a major crash (Kernal attack, and resulting reformat of the hard drive), I am wondering how to attempt a restore from the LaCie. Should I try it with the software that actually created the LaCie back up that I have; or should I reinstall the appropriate version of SilverKeeper first?
I have been plugging along with some CD back-ups of the LaCie, but this is quite frustrating since it has to be done manually. Is it possible to download an upgrade to the back-up disk directly? And if so, would this really help matters?
As you can see, I'm really a bit of an idiot about these matters; so any ANY help will be most appreciated.

My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • How to retrieve files from external HD

Here is what I did. I thought I was being smart by backup up my folders which contained my photos and music to my external hard drive, however I must not understand how mac does this. I dragged and dropped both my itunes folder and iphotos folder to my external hard drive and checked to see if they were there. I though great all looked great. About a month later my mac got a error which indicated my hd crashed so I reformatted my drive and reloaded everything and then I recently noticed that my music and I photos folder were gone, empty. I'm not sure what happened.
When I tried to restore the folder I could not open my files that are .jpg saved on my external drive. I did the shift+option key when starting I photo to recreate the folder, but I still can't open my files in the external drive. Obtained the error "Alias .jpg could not be opened because the original could not be found". Are these pictures now lost forever? I can see the .jpg on my external drive. I click on it and it ask me to fix, and choose , but everything is grayed out. Also now my computer doesn't recognize my ipod to sync since the itunes library has been changed or something. The folder was there , but non of my music. My music is available in the external drive, but It 's not the latest backup. Please someone help. I didn't move anything so I'm not sure what happened. Perhaps I got a virus or a hack stole all my music and photos. I don't know this is the wierdest thing. I guess what I need to know is are all my photos gone forever now?
I tried to import , not sure if I attempted correctly. Can you assist or walk me through?
I can see the .jpg on my external drive I just can't open them without getting the alias error.

Drag and Drop and Copy and paste should both work. As far as recovery, It won't recover files on your ext HD if all there is is aliases.
But I have recovered files that I have accidently deleted from my internal HD. There might be some remnants of these files if you didn't format with the multipass option but I am not sure on that. This is one of those hope it woks situations but you never know.
I assume you used Disk Utility to reformat?
If so there are four options when you click the "Security" button at the bottom:
    1. "Don't Erase Data"- This deletes Directory Info. Files can be recovered with Data Rescue
    2. "Zero-Out Data" Writes zero's over the entire disk. Probably no recover possibility
    3. "7-Pass Erase" Writes data over disk 7 times. No chance of recovery
    4. "35-Pass Erase" Absolutely no chance of recovery.
If you are new to Mac you probably just clicked on Erase and formated the drive. All this does is delete the directory. The files are still there.
You can try to recover from your external HD also. The files may be there but are showing up as an alias. Not likely but worth a try.
Warning! The recovery software takes a while depending on how large a drive of course. Just start it and leave for a couple of hours or more. Be sure to turn off screen saver and energy saver in System preferences. Mine took 4 or 5 hours on 200gb of data. But it did find everything. Then you sift through what you want.
    Good Luck

  • Retrieving catalogue from external drive on Leopard/Time Machine

I have backed up everything onto an external drive using time machine. But when I attempt to retrieve a catalogue I am told I do not have the necessary permissions.
I can get at the original unedited JPEGS but not the LRCAT.
    Does anyone have any thoughts?

Good news, Jeff; thanks. I've did my first Time Machine yesterday from a newly cleaned up MBP to a newly arrived LaCie multiple connect pocket drive. Santa got me the new drive, and has ordered a 3800, arriving Tuesday. I am in heaven. I owe thanks to several folks in and around LR for using those products on top of recommendations in the forum. (The 3800)
BTW- I grew up 75 miles SSW of Chicago, so I know from cold. Probably not quite as bad as the Loop when the wind blows from No. Michigan across the Lake at 40 knots.....but Baaaad cold, with WCF in the very minus numbers.

  • How to retain folders from External drive on the sidebar?

I dragged some folders from my external hard drive that I regularly use when I am in the office.
Sometimes I take my MBP out without the external drives. I realize that these aliases I had created on the sidebar disappears.
When I connect up to my external drive again, I have to drag these same folders again into the sidebar.
Is there a way I can keep these external folders on the sidebar, without creating a real alias on my hard drive and copying that onto the sidebar?
    Thanks!

Oh well. It would have been nice to have the sidebar folders greyed out instead until you plug the drives back in...

  • How to retrieve emails from trash on iPhone

I accidentally deleted 2 emails from my iphone 4S today, how do I get them out of the trash? Where is the trash?!

If the trash has been emptied, then unless you pay for data recovery software/services, it is gone (especially if you've used the machine since, meaning the disk has been written on).
Was this the application that was deleted or one document created with Pages? If it was the app, if you bought it from the App store, you should be able to download it again. If it was a retail copy, simply reinstall it from the disk.

  • How to import songs from external drive to itunes in Leopard?

my computer had issues after installing leopard and i had to erase everything on my computer. since all of my music files from itunes are on my external hard drive, they are safe! but now that i'm starting from scratch on my iBook, how do i tell the computer to import all my music files to my itunes?
i mean, i know how to click one song at a time and import them one at a time but that would take a long time. is there any easier way?
    thanks much

Its very easy. I hope that you have all your music in one folder. Just drag that folder which contains every music you have to the iTunes icon in the dock. iTunes will open and copy every file on its own.

  • How to move files from external drive to main drive WITH keywords?

On a recent trip, I uploaded several thousand images onto an external hardrive that I was using with my laptop.I keyworded and edited these files while on the road.
Back home, I want to move the files (keywords and all) to my permanent LR library which resides on a different hard drive. How can I make this transfer without losing keywords?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Jessica,
There seems to be a confusion of terms here: the catalog is where LR stores all its information (what your referred to as LR's library in your original post).
While you were on the road, did you use LR to add keywords to the photos, or did you use some other tool? If you used LR, than you already have a catalog on the laptop, which you can then import into your main LR catalog (using the Import from Catalog option from the File menu). Let us know if you get stuck anywhere.

  • How to retrieve email from iCloud using GMail?

I currently have a Dot Mac email account that I have retrieved from MobileMe by my GMail account. If I move my Dot Mac address to iCloud, what settings will need to be changed in my GMail account?

Does iCloud still use the mail.me.com server or is it now mail.icloud.com?
I've gone to www.icloud.com using Safari on my iPad  and my iPhone, but then I hit a wall because I'm not ready to transfer my mac.com & me.com email addresses over to iCloud yet. I paid $99 for MobileMe and I can't see throwing that away this early.
Hopefully there will be a "Take Control of iCloud" released in the next few months. Also, since Apple is now investigating ways to allow merging of Apple IDs, I'd like to wait until they announce what they determine will be required.
As for using a desktop computer to access iCloud webmail, I'll have to find the cheapest used Mac that can run Lion and then just use it for those rare times I absolutely have to access it that way. Most of the time that Mac will be completely off and disconnected. I absolutely abhor Lion; it is the worst version since Cheetah.

My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog
