How to retrieve files on external HDD via Time Capsule?

I have external HDDs connected to Time Capsule but when I access those HDDs, they don't show the files that were stored in them.  However, when I check the "Get Info" on those HDDs, it shows how much capacity is used and how much is available.  How can I retrieve my files on those external HDDs via Time Capsule?  Many thanks for your help!!

How is the drive formatted?
Does it show up in the airport utility?
TC has very restricted ability to read HFS+ (ie standard Mac format) or Fat32.

Open Time Machine preferences, click on the Options button. At the bottom of the exclusion list click on the Add [-] button, select the drive in the File dialog, click on the Exclude button. Understand that this configuration will only remain as long as the drive remains mounted.

  • Swap Files on external HD via Time Machine?

Two weeks ago I bought a new iMac:
Been having some fairly seriously issues with Leopard, but the most perplexing one is a Swap file that was backed up via Time Machine, I'm assuming, as it's on my external HD:
    Western Digital
    Capacity: 465.64 GB
    Available: 356.04 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s3
    Mount Point: /Volumes/My Book
In a folder outside of the Backups.backupdb folder--as viewed from the finder window--is a Private folder, which inside looks like this:
    private
    tmp
    tempVM
    vm
    swapfile0
    The swapfile is 64mb
Any ideas on how this got there? Why it's there? Why my iMac would be swapping with 4GB RAM, and only using 24% of a 320GB HD?
Also it takes forever to open and close apps, restart, 15 to 45 seconds of blue screen before OS starts to load, jerky video, kernel panics, privileges errors, thread crashes, you name it.

I have the same on my Western Digital with my MacBook Pro.
My wife's iMac uses a Seagate and the private folder does not exist.
    Thoughts?

  • Time machine backup from external hdd to time capsule

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?

Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.

    Is it worth it??
Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it.

  • Using external drive via Time Capsule to back up Media

I installed a 500 GB Time capsule and connected an Iomega USB 2.0 1TB drive. My goal is to use the ITB drive as my media drive for my MB Pro. I want to use the drive as my library for iTunes and iPhoto. I want to use time machine to backup my MB Pro but since my photos and music are on the attached drive it is not backing up those items. I tried to put an alias of the iphoto library and itunes library but it is only making a back up of the alias's. Is there a better way to set this up so I can back up those items on my 1TB drive as well as the MB Pro? I set this up this way because the Media was taking up 80% of the 160 GB hard drive space and was causing a drastic slow down in performance.

I want to use time machine to backup my MB Pro but since my photos and music are on the attached drive it is not backing up those items.
Sorry ... Time Machine will only backup your Macs internal hard disk or any external hard disks physically attached to the Mac. Time Machine can not backup one remote device (Time Capsule) to another remote device (AirPort Disk) or vice versa.

  • Can I back up to rotating external drives via Time Capsule

    Hello,
Right now, I've got a great system for backup using Time Machine, rotating two USB external drives. Every couple of weeks when one of my family members comes to visit, he brings one drive and we swap it for the one that's been doing the backup.  That way we always have one backup off site, and we are likely to never lose more than a couple weeks of content if something happens to the local backup.
Now, we're starting to need to back up at least two other computers in the house, preferably wirelessly.  Time Capsule sounds like a great option, but I need to know: can I continue to use my rotating drive scheme with a time capsule, attaching alternating USB drives every couple of weeks? I think I've read elsewhere that you can tell Time Capsule to not use the internal drive (which would probably be best for our system).
         Please let me know, thanks!
         Tiger

You do not need the Time Capsule.. the new airport extreme would work just as well. (or should do so if Apple are keeping up with things).
You simply will exchange the USB drive.. TM can choose which drive you backup to on the network.. if you do use a Time Capsule you do not choose backup on the TC.. it is still done in TM.
BUT there is no need to use AE at all.. you can backup using Time Machine to shared USB drive on the network.. that is effectively the same thing.

  • How to retrieve files from external HD

Here is what I did. I thought I was being smart by backup up my folders which contained my photos and music to my external hard drive, however I must not understand how mac does this. I dragged and dropped both my itunes folder and iphotos folder to my external hard drive and checked to see if they were there. I though great all looked great. About a month later my mac got a error which indicated my hd crashed so I reformatted my drive and reloaded everything and then I recently noticed that my music and I photos folder were gone, empty. I'm not sure what happened.
When I tried to restore the folder I could not open my files that are .jpg saved on my external drive. I did the shift+option key when starting I photo to recreate the folder, but I still can't open my files in the external drive. Obtained the error "Alias .jpg could not be opened because the original could not be found". Are these pictures now lost forever? I can see the .jpg on my external drive. I click on it and it ask me to fix, and choose , but everything is grayed out. Also now my computer doesn't recognize my ipod to sync since the itunes library has been changed or something. The folder was there , but non of my music. My music is available in the external drive, but It 's not the latest backup. Please someone help. I didn't move anything so I'm not sure what happened. Perhaps I got a virus or a hack stole all my music and photos. I don't know this is the wierdest thing. I guess what I need to know is are all my photos gone forever now?
I tried to import , not sure if I attempted correctly. Can you assist or walk me through?
I can see the .jpg on my external drive I just can't open them without getting the alias error.

Drag and Drop and Copy and paste should both work. As far as recovery, It won't recover files on your ext HD if all there is is aliases.
But I have recovered files that I have accidently deleted from my internal HD. There might be some remnants of these files if you didn't format with the multipass option but I am not sure on that. This is one of those hope it woks situations but you never know.
I assume you used Disk Utility to reformat?
If so there are four options when you click the "Security" button at the bottom:
    1. "Don't Erase Data"- This deletes Directory Info. Files can be recovered with Data Rescue
    2. "Zero-Out Data" Writes zero's over the entire disk. Probably no recover possibility
    3. "7-Pass Erase" Writes data over disk 7 times. No chance of recovery
    4. "35-Pass Erase" Absolutely no chance of recovery.
If you are new to Mac you probably just clicked on Erase and formated the drive. All this does is delete the directory. The files are still there.
You can try to recover from your external HD also. The files may be there but are showing up as an alias. Not likely but worth a try.
Warning! The recovery software takes a while depending on how large a drive of course. Just start it and leave for a couple of hours or more. Be sure to turn off screen saver and energy saver in System preferences. Mine took 4 or 5 hours on 200gb of data. But it did find everything. Then you sift through what you want.
    Good Luck

  • How to un-exclude an external HDD from Time Machine

I just upgraded/replaced a 500GB Seagate drive with a 1TB Seagage Expansion external drive due to the size of my photo library.  I want to continue to use Time Machine as my back up software (to a seperate 3TB drive).  However, Time Machine won't allow me to un-exclude the new HDD (the old one is excluded).
I'm running OS X 10.7.5, and the new drive is formated in the FAT32 format.  Is that my probem?
    Thanks

Open Time Machine preferences, click on the Options button. At the bottom of the exclusion list click on the Add [-] button, select the drive in the File dialog, click on the Exclude button. Understand that this configuration will only remain as long as the drive remains mounted.

  • How to reformat mac without startup cd via time capsule?

    can i?

No. Time Capsule is only a data backup operation, not a system restore operation. You need to boot from an install disk, format the disk, install the operating system and then restore your backup from Time Capsule.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do i transfer files from my external HD to time capsule?

    Hi Everyone,
I've been reading thru the discussions and yet to find a clear answer on how to transfer files from my external HD to time capsule. I am fairly new to Mac computers, pc user for years, but just bought a new MacBook Pro and the 500g time capsule.
I plan on using the Time Capsule as a back-up and external harddrive to store all of my music so not to overload my laptop.
Also, i have a pc formatted ipod, which i will have to re-format for my MacBook so I don't mind creating a new library in itunes but is it difficult to point the library to the music file on the Time Capsule? And will it work?
Thanks a bunch for any info!

If it is directly connected to your Mac via USB or FireWire, Time Machine will include it in the backup.
...but is it difficult to point the library to the music file on the Time Capsule?

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

I am using a macbook pro with system 10.6.8. I just discovered that no recent files have been backed up to the external disk using Time Capsule.  There is a long list of backups including most recent but no recent files, for some weeks, have been backed up.  I did a full reset of Time Machine.  I disconnected the external drive and reconnected it. It is not a matter of file types, no files and no folders have gotten backed up.  Everything looks normal though unless one goes hunting for recent files on the back up.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
