How to retrieve purchased albums without access to the original computer?

I purchased a lot of music off of itunes at my old job and I no longer have access to that computer. Is there any way to download the songs to my new computer or are they lost in cyberspace?

If you didn't make a back-up of your purchases to restore from (as you are advised to do) then I'm sorry to say that the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:

You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. I took your advice from above and went out and downloaded CopyTrans, paid the $20, downloaded everything - it worked beautifully!! Everything backed up and iTunes had all my songs.
Then I guess I'm a huge idiot or just got overzealous, so I plugged in my iPhone, because I had a few purchases on there and thought I could everything in one place on iTunes. Something happened really BAD and all my songs on iTunes deleted and were replaced with the few that I had on my phone, plugged my iPod back in and somehow I must have clicked on the wrong thing and the iPod synced with the iPhone songs! I feel sick to my stomach!! Is everything gone???

Delete those apps you can't access. Apps are forever tied to the Apple ID used to purchased them.

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The exception is itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup cppy to put everything back.

When you download something from the iCloud, it is a brand new licensed copy. Your iCloud account just contains a notation that you have this app. It isn't storing an actual copy of the app from your Mac.

When you are done with this issue, consider the computer back at the office may still
have access to your iTunes account, and it should be de-auhorized. You can do that
remotely, but be sure you carefully do not mess up your other computer iTunes libraries.

thanks for the "TouchCopy" software link. I have downloaded a demo copy and it will resolve my transfer of music from iPhone to the new computer. I can then delete any unwanted music on the new computer, then re-synch the updated music to iPhone.
I am not sure about the photos. On my iPhone, there are two photo "albums" - one called "camera roll" and the other called "photo library." TouchCopy finds the pictures in the "camera roll" DCIM folder, and I can copy them to the new computer etc.
However, TouchCopy does not seem to find the "Photo Library" folder. Any clues?

You are allowed to have two machines with activated installations, so if you only had one installation, you still have the option to install on a second without doing anything further than that. If you originally downloaded the purchase thru Adobe then you might find a download link available in your Adobe account online. The iphone is not a backup/storage device. It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which you sync.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your iphone: File>Transfer Purchases.

That suggests some underlying issue, as iTunes has always (AFAIR) allowed artwork to be assigned with multiple tracks in a single action. For an album, right-click on the album, select Get Info, select the Artwork tab. You then have three options:
If the artwork image exists as a file, click the Get Artwork button, browse to and select the file, then click Open.
Drag and drop the image file from Windows Explorer to the Artwork tab (previous releases also allowed drag and drop from a web browser, this functionality is missing - either by design or as the result of a bug - in iTunes 12).
If you've copied the artwork image to the clipboard, press Ctrl-V on the keyboard to paste in the image (prior to the 1st release of iTunes 12 this could also be done using right-click > Paste - hopefully this will be restored as a bug-fix in the next update)

There are three possible causes for this:
The format of your media files doesn't support embedded artwork - specifically, uncompressed audio in WAV format. You'll need to convert to Apple Lossless (without loss of quality) or either MP3 or AAC (if you're OK with lossy media) before artwork images can be associated with your media.
Windows' permissions are preventing your media files from being updated when iTunes attempts to embed the images (in a perfect world iTunes should report this as an error, but it actually does nothing). To check this, find the folder that contains media of interest in Windows Explorer (by default this will be C:\Users\user_name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\artist_name\album_name), right-click and select Properties, Security tab - check that your Windows user account has full control over the folder.
The media files that you're trying to add artwork to may be set to read-only in Windows. Select the folder as before in Windows Explorer, right-click > Properties and make sure that the Read-only flag is cleared.
