You are talking about 2 different things here. iTunes 64 bit is for your computer. Go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. This should automatically detect your computer and download the correct iTunes version for your computer.
The next thing you reference 4.2.1, is an iOS version, the older iOS for the iPHone 3GS. Once you get the correct version of iTunes, you will be able to connect your iPhone and sync, but you will have to install the new iTunes first.

How does one add a personal recorded M4R file to the ring tones in the UK system for iPhone 3GS.
I have tried all sorts of ways of adding my personal M4R file but can't find the place (within the UK versions of iTunes} to transfer this file so that I can select it as a ring tone.
I've tried also changing to the US version of iTunes and still can't find a way of doing it, although I have heard that it can be done.You should be able to just drop it into the library within iTunes.

Try backing it up to your computer with iTunes. Connect it to your computer, open iTunes, click on the name of the phone in iTunes, go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and click Back Up Now. Also go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer you apps and other purchased media to your iTunes library.

Update my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 looks like it up dated fine but now phone has on service how do I fix this.
My iPhone 3gs was doing that after I updated also. I believe I may have fixed mine. I did a backup to iTunes, then I did a reset through iTunes (takes forever) then after that was done I right clicked where it says my phone in iTunes and hit Restore from backup, it is very important that you do not let the computer go to screen saver or to sleep during this process, I eventually had to change my computer's setting for this because it interrupts the process. And voila! It fixed mine, and I got to keep all my media, except the ringtones, they will have to be re set to your contacts individually, if you had them like that in the first place! Hope this helps!!! An now I haven't noticed any irregular battery drainage!

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay. -

How do I back up my iphone to an external hard drive attached to my pc and not my pc? My disk on my pc is almost full and even though I selected the external hard drive it still seems to try to back it up to my computer, then says I don't have sufficient storage. I do not use a Windows machine, have a Windows Vista Dell I rarely startup now. But, from what I remember with Win boxes is, you will have to create on the external hard drive a file system like that one iTunes normally uses, and then in the iTunes preferences or control panel edit the location for the storage to specify the name of the external hard drive, or its letter code, with the name of that file system you created on the exernal drive.
I would also move all of the files from the internal file system to the external since you have now told iTunes that is where they are...before deleting from the internal drive, test iTunes to see that it goes where you want it to go. -
