How to return a value from a textbox input?

I'm having trouble writing code to return a value (e.g. mytextbox.value) from a textbox for a function calculation. The textbox is defined within a Group (e.g. mygroup) which is contained within the scene and stage (e.g. mystage). The compiler objects to "mystage.scene.mygroup.mytextbox.value" with "can't find symbol."
What is the correct syntax for returning a texbox value? Is there a way to do this without using "bind with inverse"?

You will need to hold the instance of your TextBox. Try something like that:

          myTextBox = TextBox {
function doSomethingWithText() {
    println("this text variable is updated just when textBox loses the focus: {myTextBox.text}");
    println("this rawText variable is updated in realtime (including when user is typing): {myTextBox.rawText}");
