How to reverse 10.8.5 update.  iMac only boots in safe boot

after downloading maverick update, it started to install and computer no longer boots, only in safeboot. Computer in safeboot says it has 10.8.5.  How do I fix this issue?
thx

You need to run the Mavericks installer again. If you have the Install OS X Mavericks you can run it over your install or you can boot into the Recovery drive and install from recovery.
To boot into the recovery drive hold down Command - R keys when restarting.

I recommend you backup first not only to Time Machine but to a clone backup.
Both of these applications are free to clone. You would need to buy an external drive for the clone.

  • IMac only boots in to Windows

    Hi
My feonca got a copy of windows today and wanted me to install it for her. I created the partition using bootcamp setup the inserted the windows cd and rebooted. Competed the installation. Then I inserted the Leopard cd and ran the setup for the drivers. Some of the drivers would not install. It was then that I discovered the copy of windows is 64-bit and I cant get leopard back. The iMac only boots in to windows. What can I do to fix this.
    thanks Dan

Holding down the option (or alt)-key during booting--as soon as you hear the apple chime--doesn't work?

  • How do i set drive to update changes only when same name files are added

I Want to set up an external drive to update changes only when same name files are dragged from desktop can any one help?

That's still a little ambiguous. What recording software are you using?
Usually the individual sound files in a music project file are included in a separate folder. For example, GarageBand normally hides these files inside a single Project file in the Finder, but you can right-click and Show Package Contents to see the individual audio files.
Any of those backup utilities I mentioned will be smart enough to copy the new and changed files within the project file. In the Terminal these .band files are actually directories, just like .app Applications in the Finder are actually directories. I think Finder may actually handle it properly also, but I'm not really sure what the Finder will do when you re-copy a GarageBand project folder to an existing backup copy and only some of the audio files have changed.

  • PowerPC G5 iMac only booting up in Safe-mode - Help!

In July of 2005, I purchased my PowerPC G5 20" iMac, 2.0GHz, +260 GB harddrive and 2 GB of DDR SDRAM. It has been running so great that I even upgraded to Leopard OS 10.5.6 in June of 2011.
However in Nov. 2011, the computer would freeze upon start-up, and I would have to hold the power button to shut it down. After waiting a minute I would start it up and the OS came up ok. But each week I had to shut it down and restart a few times before it booted up ok. I ran the OS Disk Utility to repair permissions and it did not seem to make a difference. I also ran MacTuneUp 3.6.0 (purchased it in 2010), and there was also no difference.
Now I can ONLY boot into Safe-mode - Help!!!

    Discovered something new!
I left my iPhone connected to the iMac, and when starting up the computer the iPhone started charging. When the screen froze (light blue shade, not black screen), the iPhone stopped charging. (no charge?).
BTW....my mouse always moves when in frozen state.
I also tried starting up (c-key) using OS 10.5.6 CD and computer also froze in light-blue screen. The computer tried to access the CD but then gave up. After leaving the computer for awhile the screen power saving mode was on (screen was black). When I moved the mouse the screen changed from black to light-blue screen. Boot CD did not work. No keyboard commands work. Only holding the power button will shut down the computer.
    Help!!

  • My iMac only starts in safe mode few hours after upgrade to 10.7.3

After I updated to 10.7.3 on my iMac everything looked fine, but after few hours of activity everything except mouse cursor froze in a fullscreen app. No keyboard shortcut was able to force quit the app and only way was to turn the iMac off with power button. After restart login screen appeared and after I logged in the system froze while after the Skype started and I wrote few letters in a chat there. Again only power button worked, but this time I didn't even get the login screen, everything froze on the grey screen.
I searched web on mac book and found info about problems with update and solution via installing comboupdate. I managed to start in safe mode and installed the combo update. After installation system started and all worked fine few hours until screen froze again, the picture gor a bit corrupted (some "empty" squares appeared) and I had to use power button again.
Since that time my only way to get to login screen is safe mode (holding shift after restart), next reinstal of combo update didn't help. New install of lion runs correctly the part of instalation in the safe mode, than it restarts after while computer restarts and installation progress is shown, however the progress freezes nearly imediatelly and nothing happens for next hour.
If I boot from recovery partition it starts after relatively long time the system utility, but even here interaction is wrong as after every click I have to wait few minutes until something happens, so I was not able to really start some action there.
I can only take the iMac to sevis (sadly the 1 year warranty over) on monday so any suggestions what I could try till then to make it working again are very welcome.

So the result form Apple authorized servis was that both motherboard and graphic card need to be replaced (cost aproximatelly 1100$) and in addition they said there will still remain some problem with display which would cost additional 500$ to fix. Taken in account that there would be only 90 days warranty on new parts I decided to give up with the iMac. Very disappointing after only 1,5 year on machine that costed more than 2000$.
Recommendation from me after this experience - buy 3 years warranty if possible. I am personally very much looking forward for Mac Pro refresh. I don't want to be again in situation that if something breaks in my working machine I have no chance to replace it myself and can only expect very high repair costs. Untill new Mac Pros are out I'll suffer working on Mac Book Pro.

  • IMac only boots to white screen

I have a 27" iMac that will not boot.  It chimes and I can hear the fan but will not go past the white screen.  I have tried resetting the PRam, and the PMU but it doesn't seem to help.  Any ideas short of sending it in for repair?

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Mid 2007 24" imac only boots without video card installed

, do i need a new one or is it something else?
one day it decided to not boot. No chime, black screen. Can hear fans and cd/dvd spin.  Diag. leds 1,2&3 lit 4 is not.  Did some googling, and eventually found out that if i take the MMX ATI 2600HD video card out of the computer and turn it on, it boots up fine (still no chime however) and i am able to use screen sharing from my other mac to access it. Everything looks and works as normal, only there is no screen of its own. the keyboard wors fine, mouse, cd/dvd drive etc.  I have already purchased and installed a new PSU at $120 which did not fix a thing, so i am hesitant to just assume that buying a new video card will solve my problem. so my first question is, will buying and installing a new video card fix it? and if so can i purchase an upgraded video card other than the stock ATI 2600HD? i have heard that there is an NVIDIA card that is compatible a GeForce 8800 GS 512MB i believe. and third, if it is compatible, will it work with the Heatsink for the ATI 2600HD or do i need to buy that as well??
I am trying to avoid the BS canned answer that apple loves to give as a solution, which is replace the logic Board. At nearly $1,000 I'll spend my time and effort it may take to actually find the reason it broke and attempt to fix it rather than just replace the whole thing with a new one. any suggestions or advice graetly appreciated.

so, a strange development on my imac problem. I have ordered a new video card for it, a 2600hd pro. today out of curiosity i punched the numbers i could find from the card that was in there and it comes up as a ati 2400xt card. that card was the one for the 20" model not my 24". whats up with that? does that mean that when my new 2600hd pro gets here it will not work in my system? I sure hope so or apple has some splaining to do!

How can i cancel my osx update?

There is no safe way. If it's been underway a while don't. If it's been underway no more than 5 minutes, then you can force quit the installer by pressing COMMAND-OPTION-ESC, select the installer application, then click on the Force Quit button.

I did not authorize 2 in app purchases and because my credit card is at its limit, and i dont know how to reverse the in app purchases, i cannot update any app or do just about anything in the appstore or itunes store. I dont care if i owe apple's itunes appstore a few dollars over 2 in app purchases i never meant to download in fact the whole app itself i wanted to delete...but out of the hundreds (maybe lower thousands) fof dollars in music and apps and whatever else, that i rightfully purchased over the passed couple of years....should *NOT* have the upgrades and/or previous purchased songs withheld from me over $3 in accidently purchased add ons through an existing app i deleted an disliked anyway

Same thing happened to me with my peruvian credit card in the peruvian app store, I want to buy an app, but it says that my credit card is "not supported in the Peruvian app store"

  • How do I install snow leopard on an external drive so I can update imac to lion

Hi, I have only one software program for which I need to keep using snow leopard. I would like to make a second start up on an external drive, and also put this software there, and then update my Imac to Lion. As I am not computer savvy, I would really appreciate step by step directions. so far, I have installed Lion once, found out the problem, uninstalled it ,  reinstalled 10.6.8, and restored all from back up. Now I need to figure out how to have both OS"s . I only need to use this software about once a month. I have also heard of something that makes a second machine as a virtual machine on the imac, but I don't know anything about it.  Thanks,

Simply clone your system drive to the external drive:
Wait until the operation completes. Upon completion proceed to the cloning.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Clone Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
To startup from the external clone restart the computer and at the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click on the arrow button below it.

  • I can't play the downloaded iTunes movie on my newly updated iMac to OS X Maverick. Why not? And How can I get it to work? Thanks.

I can't play the downloaded iTunes movie on my newly updated iMac to OS X Maverick. Why not? And How can I get it to work? Thanks.

Do you get any error message?
What actually happens when you open it?
What app are you trying to play the files inside? Try iTunes.
I assume these files have DRM from the iTunes store. The Mac needs to be authorized to play them, open iTunes & select Authorize in the store menu, then sign in with the Apple ID that purchased the files.
Select the iTem in iTunes & get info on it (from the File menu) & you can see the account name that it belongs to.
