How to run windows on macbook

I am new to mac and am trying to figure out how to run windows on my new Macbook. What do I need to purchase in order to accomplish this? How much memory is needed. I have 1 gig of ram and an 80 gig hd. Thanks for your help

This is a good place to start:

If you don't own a copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, then that would be the only purchase you need to make.

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

    Hey komalsingh,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issues with your MacBook Air keyboard and BootCamp. The Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide provides some information that may be relevant:

  • How to Run Windows on my Intel Macbook Pro??

    Hello all!
I really need to set up my macbook pro with the ability to run windows. This is primarily for the need of my job (i need to use Microsoft Publishe2003). I'm swamped with work and I really don't want to have to sit in my stuffy office this weekend to work. I know it's possible to do. Can someone point me in the right direction on this? Also, is it expensive? Thank you so much! Have a great holiday!

Please search the discussions, or Google before posting, as this question has asked and answered many times. It can save you time in the future.
    You have 3 options:
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/
    http://vmware.com/products/fusion/
While Boot Camp is free, as it is part of OS X Leopard, all three require you purchase a copy of Windows.

  • Running Windows on MacBook Air

    Hi
I am considering buying a MacBook Air 11 inch 128gb.  However from time to time I will need to use Windows apps particularly Microsoft Access and I just wanted to check whether I will have any problems running Windows on this spec of MacBook Air?
    Many thanks
    Ken

I have exactly the setup you are thiking of getting, a mid year2011 11" i5 with 4GB ram and a 128GB SSD.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using VirtualBox which is free, no need to Bootcamp.
I created a 30GB file for it. After initial install it had only used about 9-10GB.
At the moment with SQL Server Express and MATLAB installed, plus a few other things like Chrome browser for my windows coding, the file has grown to 17GB, and im having no problems.
In fact i tried installing SQL Server Express on a Vista 64 machine that was lying around, denied! it didnt work, but under the VM all is working well. how cool is that.
The great thing about using VirtualBox is that your windows machine is just basically one big file on your Mac disk, no fancy cumbersome dual installs needed, plus i didnt want windows polluting my Mac too much.
This is my first Mac and i cant say enough good things about it.
As for optical drive, im using a Samsung SE-S084 and it works no problems, its what i used to install Windows into the VM.
    Good luck.
ps: one more little thing, when running Windows using VirtualBox, im allocating 3GB to Windows and 1GB to Mac and im having no problems.
basically i might have Chromium running in Mac, finder, preview and its all fine. I like to allocate a little bit more to Windows as i know a few of the coding tools can be a little hungry.

    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not yet fully developed for the Mac - some features are not yet implemented - but it does work otherwise.
    6. Last is Q. Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs. It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard. The Boot Camp Beta that was used with Tiger has expired and is no longer available for use. So contrary to the other poster's comment, Boot Camp isn't truly "free." You must purchase Leopard to get it.

  • How to run AHT on MacBook Pro 4,1

I would like to know how to run AHT (Apple Hardware Test) on my MacBook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) because I tried to follow the Apple support but I am not sure what to do. I updated my Mac to OS X 10.9 but I still have the original disks of Leopard 10.5
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers,
    Jass

Look at the 'second' installation disk.  It should have the AHT instructions on it.  Insert the disk into the DVD drive and hold the D key.
    Ciao.

  • Recommendations for running Windows on Macbook with OSX Lion version 10.7.2?

I Just bought a new MacBook Pro, running Lion, version 10.7.2. I am looking to run some windows applications on my mac, including AutoCAD, etc. I would ideally like to install bootcamp on my MacBook, but from what i understand, Lion is only compatible with Windows 7... I have Windows XP and VMWARE Fusion that I had run on my previous MacBook, however, I am unable to install VMWARE Fusion on my new MacBook (Lion). Any recommendations for running higher-profile windows apps on a mac without having to purchase Windows7 or a new version of VMWARE? Thanks

Newer computer = newer drivers and apps. You can only run Windows 7 using Boot Camp Assistant with the newer computers. Or, you can download and install Parallels or Fusion (the most current versions work in Lion). If using Parallels or Fusion you can install XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.
Or, you could try the free VirtualBox.

  • How to load Windows in MacBook Pro

Once the MacBook Pro was initiated as iOS or maverick os can a windows os be loaded?

If you want to be able to run Windows programs at the same time as Mac programs, install virtualization software like Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox, and then install Windows in that.
If you want to run the entire Mac as a Windows PC (you choose whether to start up the computer into either OS X or Windows), use Apple Boot Camp.
    Both work well.

Hi gcng welcome to the forums. The processor speed is a nominal difference on the Intel Core 2 Duo. It depends on what else you need from the machine. Better graphics but you have to step up to the 15" MBP. The important thing is you have to max on the RAM after purchase. I run Parallels 5 and Windows and it requires all of the 4GB of RAM. Factor that into your purchase price. Third party RAM will be less expense.
I don't think I need better graphics as I will use it to surf the net, simple word processing only.I'm just wondering which macbookpro should I buy,and to play Warcraft 3 on garena, which software should I suse, bootcamp or parallel,so that I wouldn't experience any lag during the game.

  • How to run windows inside mac

Want to run windows 7 inside the Lion OS 10. of my macbook pro. I understand some products like Parallels are helpful, but I want to know which is the most reliable and easy to use product that would seamlessely work between Mac and Windows. Thank you for your answer and help.

VMFusion I know has Unity, which will hide Windows itself and only show windows of Windows programs in OS X so it appears as seemless as possible.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?
