How to run Windows-only applications on Macs?

Is there a way to do this without having to purchase huge software programs (like Parallels, etc.)? I am only wanting to run 1 Windows-only application, not install the entire Windows-theme onto my laptop. Thanks for the help!

Eric,
there is Windows emulation software called Wine that can run many (but by no means all) Windows programs without needing a Windows installation. It is gratis, but on OS X you need to compile Wine yourself; they do not have precompiled downloadable disk images for OS X. However, a company called CodeWeavers does offer a precompiled version of Wine called CrossOver Mac for OS X, but it costs $59.95. They do have a gratis 14-day trial version, so you could download that to see if your lone Windows application would work well under OS X with it.

  • Can anyone shed some light on how to run window based application on mac air?  I must run Meta Trader 4 platform and MS Office.

    Hello,
Can anyone please shed some light on how I can run MS Office and Meta Trader 4 platform on mac air.  I have been using Play on Mac and Wine for the past couple of weeks, but now suddenly it has stopped working, only crashing and giving me nightmares.  Is it juts best to install the latest Windows or Parallel?
    Regards Joe

Meta Trader 4 is Windows only - Office is available for the Mac and Windows and are mostly compatible but given that you'll be doing online trading you may prefer the Windows version of Excel since there are financial spreadsheets with macros that only run on the Mac with some significant editing.
You can install Windows 7 or 8 in BootCamp or any version of Windows usting virtualization. VMWare and Parallels are commercial programs and VirtualBox is open source. VB may be all you need. Whatever solution you choose, you'll need a commercial version of Windows (or get an OEM disc from NewEgg).

  • How will running windows XP affect my Mac?

I am very new to Mac's. When I bought it two weeks ago I learned about bootcamp and how you could run both Windows and OSX, I thought this would be great because I would like to be able to play a favorite game of mine on here. However, when using Windows I have had nothing but viruses. If I used bootcamp to run Windows XP, would I be just as likely to get viruses and crap on my Mac as I would be on any other computer? And if I did get a virus or something, would it be contained to the XP part of the hard drive, or would my whole computer get hit?

    Hi DJ Timbo,
running Windows on a Mac is like running Windows on any other computer.
So, after what you have experienced would you run Windows without an Anti-Virus software ?
While the Mac and Mac OSX are immune to Windows viruses due to the different nature of the operating system, it can nonetheless be the source of Windows viruses infiltrating your Windows partition on your Mac, when you use an infected USB pendrive (or a CD/DVD or the internet).

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Uninstall mac OS and run Windows only????

This may have already come up in this forum but I may not be using the correct search terms so don't shoot me.
Is it possible to get rid of the Mac OS entirely and run only windows on my intel based macbook. I have got the drivers disc that bootcamp made me so can I wipe everything clean and boot to a bootable windows XP or Vista OS disc??
I have nothing agaisnt the Mac OS just do not ever see myself using it and it takes up plenty of hardisk space.

The reason I ask is because upon startup of xp as it is set as my default OS the computer screen flashes just for an instant the Mac OS startup screen and makes the iconic Mac OS startup sound then boots into XP. It is almost like it is referencing something in the Mac OS then going into Windows.
Has anyone completely uninstalled the Mac OS and tried running Windows only with firsthand knowledge.
    Thanks for the info!!

  • Run Windows 8.1 on Mac Air 100%?  How to update Mac Firmware?

I know it's possible to run Windows 100% on my Mac through BootCamp (I have small SSD hard drive so it is one or other).  My question is if I install Mavericks on a USB thumb drive will I still receive firmware updates from Apple via keeping the USB updated?  Or, will those firmware updates just stay on USB?
    Thanks.

What a question. Theoretically, if you keep OS X Mavericks installed in a USB drive and it is updated, you will be able to receive firmware updates and to get them installed in your Mac.
To install firmware updates in your Mac, OS X copies the firmware to the EFI partition (a small partition at the start of the drive), and they are installed the next time your Mac starts up. This means that your USB drive with OS X Mavericks must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" and have a GUID partition table. With this, all firmware updates will be installed to your computer.

  • Does Java 7 run on only x64 bit MAC OS X?

I want to deliver self-contained application packages on Windows, Linux and Mac so I have build my JavaFX application on all three platforms. I will allow my users to download these native bundles from my application's download web page but I have a confusion regarding MAC users because For Linux and Windows, JDK/JRE 7 comes in two download options
    1. for x86
    2. for x64.
but for MAC we have only option for x64.
Java Download Page shows Java/Jre is not available for 32 bit MAC OSX to run JavaFX application. Does it mean JavaFX will run on only x64 bit MAC OSX?
If it is so, then my issue has been solved, as I have already bundled my Javafx application as a "Self-Contained Application Packages" after run custom build.xml script on x64 MAC OSX but if it is not so, the user can also run JavaFX application on x86 MAC OSX but in that case my "Self-Contained Application Packages" for mac would not run on x86 MAC OSX.
So I am planning to give an additional zip file that either contains app (without copy of jre) or a plain self executable jar. But I'm bit worried regrading - what exactly I need to bundle into that zip file with self executable JAR so requirements must be met to be able to run my JavaFX application in following conditions?
    conditions are : -
    1. If user has x86 MAC OSX.
    2. If java is already installed on user's system. And he would not like to download the "Self-Contained Application Packages" from our download page.
    3. Big download size.
So what among the following two options suits if user have x86 MAC OSX or if he has already installed java on his system or he would not like to download "Self-Contained Application Packages" from download page due to big download size?
    Option are -
    1. APP ( without inbuilt copy of JRE)
    2. Or only a self executable jar.
I am not sure that Mac OS X 10.7.3 (Lion) or later version can run on x86 system. So in case of #1 option the user may have trouble if he is using x86 system. Then he may need to change info plist file and replace the JavaAplicationStub.
In case of #2 option I think is better as the user need to download the JRE only and the JAR should run using "java -jar" command.
Please suggest which option is better in case if JavaFX application can run on x86 bit MAC OS X?

JavaFX will run on only x64 bit MAC OSX?Yes. There is no 32 bit JavaFX 2.x+ build for OS X.

  • How to run windows on macbook

I am new to mac and am trying to figure out how to run windows on my new Macbook. What do I need to purchase in order to accomplish this? How much memory is needed. I have 1 gig of ram and an 80 gig hd. Thanks for your help

This is a good place to start:

If you don't own a copy of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, then that would be the only purchase you need to make.

  • How to run an "Automator" application at regular time intervals

I would like to find out how to run an "Automator" application at regular time intervals, say at every 5 minutes.
Is there any program, AppleScript or any method to do this?
I would very much appreciate a help.
    Suwan

save your workflow as an ical plugin, this will automatically insert the workflow into ical, and create a workflow category for it, then just set to repeat every 5 minutes, or save as an APP and use a program called CRONIX (freeware) to run the schedule.
