How to safely move a back up to USB hard drive?

I just created a back up on my local drive, but I'd like to move that backup safely to a USB drive as well.
How can I copy and paste safely that local backup to my USB drive?

sorry, I just noticed, that you posted this note.
I assume, you created the backup using RnR (Rescue And Recovery).
In case you created a backup on you local HDD, and you want to copy it also to your USB HDD, then simply use the "Copy To USB" button, that you can find in the RnR GUI once you open it and check the Settings.

This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
1. Quit iTunes
2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

Are you talking about a Bootcamp partition? You can't boot Windows from an external drive.

you should never (ab)use a designated backup-setup for 'ordinairy' storage tasks.
plus, the wireless connection to TC is too slow for iMovie.

Time Machine backups were not supported via USB hard drive connected to earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Some users who tried this on earlier version AirPort Extremes seemed to have some success with Time Machine backups....some had moderate success and some had no success with this. Count me in the "no success" category.

How Do You "Move" Items/Applications from the Mac Hard Drive?

As the subject line suggests I need to "move" things from my regular Mac Hard Drive to the additional Hard Drive I installed. My normal (forgive my lack of technical talk) hard drive is almost full. I would like to move things like iTunes, iPhoto etc to my new hard drive (1TB) so that I can free up space on my current more regularly used hard drive. Is there an easy way to do this?

There's various approaches you can take. Personally I would try to leave applications and the system on the main drive and just move data files to another drive. Some applications really want to be run from the main drive and will become cranky if you put them elsewhere because things aren't where they expect them to be.
Moving files is often just a matter of dragging them to the new place. Note that if this new place is another drive the files get copied and you will have to delete the originals from the original drive once you are done copying.
Applications can have a complex structure with bits and pieces of files all over the place, some may be invisible. While these can be copied, as I said before it is often best to leave them on the main drive.
Just for your information, you posted your software question in the Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Power Mac G5 > Power Mac G5 (tower) hardware questions area. Your computer information says you are running a Mac Pro and Snow Leopard (which won't run on a G5). It doesn't really matter in this case but if you have a platform specific question in future, for fastest response you might want to make sure it gets into the correct forum.

I have one external hard drive with 500 GB storga and then another 2 TB external hard drive that I am using as my time machine back up of everything. I moved my itunes library (approx. 70GB) over to the 500 GB hard drive, but I think it is still somewhere on the imac HD. I am looking for simple directions on how to move my itunes library and/or iphoto library and deleting the oriiginal version on my HD so that I have adequate room on my startup disk. Thoughts?

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp. I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer. When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine.   however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side. Originally I had Parellels on my computer. After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive. Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop.    I am not sure how to do any of this. I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED HELP>

First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive.

It would not get past the DOS screen but getting that far I was at least able to conduct a diagnostics. The result was Hard Drive failure "BIOS-HD." I have a new PC with Windows 8 and have installed Itunes there as well. I removed the Hard Drive from the old computer and placed it in an external drive box. Fortunately, I can access everything on that drive including Itunes. How do I move my Itunes Library from my old hard drive in the external box and connected to my new PC, to the hard drive in the new PC? I see all sorts of instructions on line but none for the specific circumstance of the old hard drive in an external box and moving to a new PC with newer operating system (Windows 8). Thanks

Aside from checking here, I also Googled for an answer. Then I faced the problem on the Internet where stuff stays there forever and so I see solutions for previous and maybe obsolete versions of Itunes. I have no way of knowing if the seemingly sound advice was solved in later versions of Itunes. In one case there is a great YouTube video with a guy from Circuit City (now out of business). I found an extensive explanation that made my head explode with all the detail but I did understand enough to see that the solution they precribed has you go onto your new computer and make sure you rename your new hard drive to match the name of the hard drive from your old computer. That way Itunes on the new computer will be able to find it okay. These instructions also tell you to downlaod Itunes software on the new computer first and then move two different folders (I think one has the extension of .itl); one folder with the library and the other has the metadata--to the new computer. Then to confuse things I have seen instructions that also say to just move the files and they don't address the issue with the file names like turringtest said. Most discouraging is that all of the instructions I have talked about, explain what to do without ever addressing my specific situation where the old hard rive used to reside in an old computer and has an Vistas Operating System that apparently failed and caused me to get a new computer in the first place (I guess I could have loaded a new operating system but not sure if that would have wiped out my extensive files...also irrelevant to the discussion }:) Sorry). How Can I transfer TM back up from one hard drive to a different drive??

Set up Is:
1 iMac with internal 500 GB drive
1 external 120 GB FW400
1 external 500 GB FW400
1 external 1.5 TB FW800
Right now TM is backing everything up on my 500GB and it's full. I bought a new hard drive today(1.5 TB) and would like that to be the new drive TM backs everything to. How do I do this so TM is not effected by me changing the destination of where to back everything up to? Can I just copy all the TM back up files from the 500 GB drive to the 1.5 TB drive and then change the destination in the TM Preferences? Or what do I need to do?

It took all night for SuperDuper! to make its copy! WOW that was slow! Then I made sure all my data was copied over. Then I opened System Preferences for TM and clicked on the button that said to change disk. After I made that change TM did a back up and it works great! Im now using disk Utilities to erase the old TM drive and Im Zeroing out the data also which it looks like it is going to take it 5 hours to Zero out.
