  • My intel iMAC keeps freezing up. How can I correct this issue?

Why is my Intel iMAC freezing up and how can I fix this issue?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    CAUTION
Before you restore the iPod make sure that your iTunes library has the version of apps that are presently installed on your iPod. Many apps have been update and the update apps are not compatible with the 2G iPod. I would do that by deleting the apps from your iTunes library and then transfer them to iTunes. See:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

  • Intel iMac keeps freezing, lagging and shutting down.

My iMac has for the past week or so repeatedly frozen, sometimes leading to it showing a blue screen forcing me to shut it down.
When I then try to turn it back on, it doesn't load. However, a Safe Boot and HD restore fixes the problem temporarily. The computer works ok, with a bit of a lag sometimes. But as soon as I open too many apps, or sometimes just for no real reason at all, it just freezes and stays that way. This means I can't really use my computer for much else other than ubrowsing the web. Programs such as Word or Photoshop mostly just freezes the computer up.
I've never had this problem before at all. What could the prolem be? Is it a hardware problem? I'm unsure what to do, and I really don't want to turn in my computer anytime soon.
    Thanks, William.

It is really hard to say if the hard drive, or hard drive interface is faulty without swapping in another hard drive. Since the Intel imac is not made for user access, I would ask a service technician to diagnose your error. If your data is not backed up, try a recovery using tools on my backup FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
if none of them see anything, ask if the technician can try to just remove the hard drive, if there is still some non-backed up data on it, so you can get a chance to put it in a Firewire SATA hard drive case to see if it can see any data that way.

  • Cannot boot my Intel iMac after installing Snow Leopard on an external USB

I have an Intel iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I have several FW and USB external drives. When I installed Snow Leopard from the Apple install disc on one of the USB drives to act as a backup the system rebooted and the Apple logo appeared and then the spinning gear wheel. After a while the logo was replaced by a circle with a line through it. I booted back into the install disc and tried Startup Disc from Utilities and selected Macintosh HD with the same result. Then I restored the system on my internal drive (Macintosh HD) from Time Machine. Still no luck. Does any one have any ideas before I reformat and reinstall from the SL installer disc?

Thanks for the replies. I was under the impression that Intel Macs can be booted with a USB drive
I just learned today that this is true from one of our Level 4's. PPC macs can't boot on USB drives and I thought that carried over to Intel, but I was wrong.
    Didn't mean to misinform you!
Ultimately, I reformatted my internal drive, reinstalled the OS and did a restore from my latest Time Machine backup with Migration Assistant. I didn't lose any data but the restore process took 3+ hours.
    Great! Glad you had success!

  • Help with re-starting my intel imac after 10.4.6 installation?

    Hey guys,
I am a UK intel imac user and I have a problem. I upgraded to 10.4.6 via software update this morning and everything seemed to be loading OK. On returning to the computer 5 minutes later I discovered an error message saying that update had failed. I then looked at the version tab under 'About this Mac' and it said 10.4.6. I then thought the best thing to do was simply re-boot. I now have a DOS screen with the following:
    Darwin/BSD (JOnathan-Baileys-Computer--2.loc) (Console)
    Login:
I have tried simply re-booting again as well as typing in my user ID and password to no avail? On typing in my user ID etc I get a blue start up screen and then I get the DOS screen again.
    Any suggestions?
Incidently I forgot to remove my Audio Interface from the Firewire connection is this what probably caused the machine to throw a major tantrum?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Jon Bailey (UK)

    Hi boxlight,
No, you are not the first to mention the issues you are now experiencing with the 10.4.8 update...
Here's what I would try: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - you can run the Combo Update and see if that "fixes" any issues. There have been posts re: using the Combo Update which ended up fixing some software glitches...
You can also go here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html#Anchor-Manually-49575 - I use the Terminal method to run the Maintenance Scripts and my Mac runs better than new...

  • How's Your New Intel iMac?

I've had my Intel iMac for a mere 12 days (upgraded from a 700 MHz G3 iBook). I bought the original "bondi blue" iMac when it debuted in 1998. My new iMac screams with speed, and the display is big, bright and beautiful.
Is anyone else having the same perfectly blissful iMac experience?

Glad to see there's a sizable crew pleased w/ their

Ditto! I just thought I'd put it "out there." Seems like all I read in Discussions are problems I've never experienced with any of my Apple products. I'm on my 7th Mac and have two iPods. Not a single problem.
I'm loving my Intel iMac. I may have sold a couple of PC friends on Apple. They both asked where the hard drive is and couldn't believe it was inside the slim iMac display.
iMac is the quietest machine I've ever used and stays relatively cool compared to other Macs I've had. I haven't yet gotten into Front Row, but what I've seen so far looks pretty awesome. My Office 2001 runs really fast under Rosetta, and Safari, iTunes are snappier than ever.
Great machine! Thanks, everyone, for your input.

  • Looping Restart in Early Intel iMac after recent 10.5 update

My friend's iMac is stuck in a restart loop after downloading the latest update for her 10.5 system. She hadn't installed an update for about 4 months so I am not sure what update would have caused the loop. Her computer was working fine before the update so I am picking it is a software issue.
Having searched the forums I haven't come up with people experiencing a similar problem.
    _*What is happening:*_
Hit the startup button, it hangs in the white Apple logo screen with the spinning icon for five to ten minutes ... then it automatically restarts itself returning to the same loop over and over again.
    _*What I have done:*_
    1. Tried a PRAM reset ... no change
    2. Tried an Install Disc restart with the 'C' key ... it starts alright but then says this is the wrong disc for the computer. I can't find my Leopard install disc. I will have a better look for it soon.
    3. Tried connecting it as a target drive ... I just get a blank white screen
    _*A further problem:*_
I was going to reset her computer off her Time-machine backup but when I checked it out it would not allow me into it saying I did not have permissions ... which means any reinstall of the system will not be able to access her time-machine.
Any ideas of what I should try? I will try to find my Leopard install disc and do the reboot off it. I think that is my best bet at the moment.

  • How to I restart my iMac 27-inch desktop after a power intrerruption?

I inadvertantly pulled the power cord from my 27-inch iMac and now cannot seem to restart the computer.  Is there any procedure that I need to follow to get it to restart?  I'm going through a power regulator that smooths the voltage signal, siubce I work from a home office.

Well, Ralph, I did what I should have done initially and read the ENTIRE SMC information that you provided the link to.  It has worked and I am a happy man!!!  Thanks very much.  Sorry for not being as thorough as I should have been before I sent my initial reply.  Heads up, everyone: read the entire section/info page before being a jerk like I was!!!

  • Intel iMac 20" freezing up. Cursor, iTunes

I have had a new Intel 21.5" l iMac for 3 months and it started freezing up about a month ago. At first, it was just occasionally, but as time went on, the freezing happened more often, each time the same way: the trackball cursor and wireless keyboard would lock up, along with the entire computer. If I had music runnning in iTunes, it would stop, but if I was viewing a video clip, it would continue running and would not freeze. At that point, the only thing I could do was to emergency shutdown the computer by pressing and holding the Power button for several seconds. I could then restart it again using the Power button, as normal. I am not sure what to do at this point. I am thinking of reinstalling everything again but not use Time Machine reinstall the old files, since there may be something defective lurking there. But first, I'd like to hear if anyone else has had this same problem and what, if anything, they did to solve the problem. I have looked at the other "freezing up" problems, but none sound exactly like mime. I will appreciate any help in this matter.

I used to have the exact same issue (I have a 17 iMac with Core 2 Duo), and I discovered that it was my HP printer drivers that would start up and hog all CPU and RAM. I uninstalled the HP drivers, and everything works just fine. (In other words, if you have installed any drivers from HP for printers, scanners, or just about anything else, you should take a look under 'Activity Monitor' to see what processes are taking so much of your system power).

  • From the Top: How can I fix my iMac after failed 10.4.3 update?

I have an iMac G4 (hemispheric base) with 512 extra ram (from Apple). I used software update to upgrade to 10.4.3 After an apparently successful download, the computer refused to reboot. It would get to the desktop (with my usual icons visible) but then the spinning rainbow wheel would never stop.
== I tried various combinations of rebooting and unplugging. No luck.
== I tried using the Mac OSX install disk to repair permissions. No change.
== I tried using the install disk to repair the disk. It said I had an unrepairable error on my disk.
== I tried booting in safe mode. Computer would always turn itself off.
== I tried booting in single user mode. It would show a text screen but not really start.
== I tried using disk warrior ($100). It performed a lengthy repair. Computer now behaves a bit differently (e.g. in safe mode it gets to the log in screen and then hangs rather than turning itself off and when I try to start as usual I still see my custom desktop background but not my icons) but it still will not start. Also, frighteningly, the disk drive will no longer accept the OSX install dvd -- it just spits it out.
So, I feel stuck. I need some of the data on the computer (including some digital photos of hurricane Wilma damage for insurance purposes) but even if I were willing to do an install and erase, how can I, since the computer does not accept the dvd anymore?
I know I should have fully backed up and repaired the disk with the install disk ahead of the upgrade. I naively believed the download to be routine. However, I do need the data and do need the computer. Can anyone help?
    Thanks to everyone.

    Hi
My Powerbook was the same. Only fix is to reinstall OSX from the install CD but be sure not to pick the Format and install clean. Once you boot with the install CD pick the preserve user data and settings.
On My machine the reinstall looked perfect. My network, email, files and all the programmes were all there. Most apps worked fine but Adobe CS2, Virtual PC and NetBarrier all needed reinastallation as they reported a few files or registration was missing. I went for the 10.4.3 upgrade again and it worked fine.
    Good luck

  • How to restore my intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.11 to factory default - keeping my files, must I Format HDD ?

First, I need to know how to confidently Back-up all my files to a External HDD, since Tiger does not have Time Machine.
Next, Keeping my files, I wish to restore the mac to it's original factory (out of the box) settings. The 'Home' Directory got "renamed" and messed up where everyone's files/playlists etc. were.
Was considering upgrading to a newer O/S but most say that is not recommended. ?? Any suggestions
iMac spring 2007 vintage, intel duo core 2.16 ghz? (I think?)
    thanks,

    1. You won't lose any data, you may lose updates but these are very easily restored by simply running Software Update and following the on-screen instructions.
    2. Again if you don't restore setttings their settings may be lost. In short you can't have your cake and eat it too. You originally said you want to restore the system to it's factory out of the box settings so you need to decide what to do. Frankly if it were my system I'd do a fresh install and restore everything including the settings and your system will run better and retain the settings you have tweaked over the years.
    3. If the kids want to update their iPods then yes you have to get to a more current version of OS X. You're several generations behind now. Assuming you have a system that will support Lion 10.7.2 which would be:
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Then for $60 total which is $29 for Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and $29.99 for Lion 10.7.2. You can skip Leopard (10.5.8) which is nice. And no you cannot skip directly from Tiger to Lion. Plan on spending an evening or morning updating. Total time depending on the amount of data you have would be about 2-3 hours.
    4. You can determine the IOS version on each iPod Touch by clicking Preferences - General - About and look for the version.

  • Performance and instability trouble with intel iMac after 10.4.8

    Hi all,
I have a 20" intel (Core Duo) iMac. Everything was super fast and nice since I bought it last February.
I recently "software updated" to 10.4.8 and since then it seems slower, groggy, and Safari crashes regularly.
Is this a known issue or is it just me? Is there anyway to uninstall 10.4.8? Or, can anyone recommend a utility to help diagnose the problem?

  • How do I restart iOS download after internet crashes without having to start from the beginning.

My internet crashes and stops downloading the iOS restore software for my phone.  When I try to restart the download, it starts from the beginning.  How can I get it to cary on from where it left off?  Why doesn't it do this automatically!?
    Thanks.

If you've already unsuccessfully tried to resume the download then the previously partial download may no longer be present on you computer.<br />
What you can do in such a case is:
    * Move the old .part partial download and the 0 byte final file without the .part to another location.<br />
    * Start a new download and pause it, don't close Firefox.<br />
    * Copy the two files (.part and 0 byte final) that you moved above back to the download location to replace the new files that were created.<br />
    * Resume the download in Firefox.
