How to safely uninstall applications

I am attempting to uninstall an application without uninstall option. But I can't find any uninstall utility in OSX for removal of programs( I convert to Mac lately). Just want to know how can I safely uninstall such application. Thanks.

Just to reinforce Nanofreak, and Ron.
Let's say for example that you have Skype installed on your mac. In order to remove the software simply drag it into the trash from your applications folder (or wherever you decided to install it). To remove the "residue" that comes behind it as Ron mentioned, simply click on spotlight and type 'skype' into the search bar for example. You should then see a list of files and / or folders related to that application. Simply check through them and delete them, specifically looking for the preference files which will usually appear like this for example - com.apple.skype.plist
Hope that I may have been of further assistance

OK. That wasn't clear at first. See the following:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper 2.0.1
        2. AppDelete 3.2.6
        3. Automaton 1.50
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner 2.1.0
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash 1.8.2

  • How do you uninstall applications in OS X specifically classic (os 9)

how do you uninstall applications in OS X specifically classic (os 9)

Do you mean you want to remove Classic (OS 9)?
If so, there's not much to it. First, be sure you don't need, or plan to use any OS 9 or earlier applications. You'll need Classic to run them if you do. Second, back up any files created with those older apps if you need to.
Once you're ready, delete the following folders:
System Folder (NOT System. That's the OS X system folder.)
Applications (Mac OS 9) (NOT Applications. Those are the OS X apps.)
If OS X complains that it can't empty the trash because "items are in use", restart and you should then be able to empty the trash.

  • How do I uninstall applications with a MacBook Pro?

Hai, I need help finding out how to uninstall applications with a MacBook Pro?
-I just got this computer 5-6 days ago and I hardly know anything about it. (AS expected from a new user to a Mac computer. ) Everything is kind of confusing to me especially with unziping and ziping files.
-I have researched trying to find out ways to uninstall with a Mac but everyone seems to have a different way to uninstall. And I really don't want to do something to mess up my new computer while trying to find out how to uninstall applications. (These computers are "expensive" and are non-returnable.)
If anyone can answer my question that would be so great and I would surely appreciate you!
    Thank you, CreeSuki.
OH, and if needed I am running on operating system "Lion" (Rawrrrr). And I am trying to uninstall Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 in general.
    Thank you!

The basic way to uninstall an app is just trash it.  But to get (most, sometimes all) of its associated data files, for example, preferences (usually .plist files in ~/Library/Preferences -- ~ is your home directory) you either have to know what to look for or try to use one of the 3rd party generic uninstallers.  Here's a (partial?) list of potential uninstallers:
    Amnesia
    AppCleaner
    AppDelete
    AppZapper
    CleanApp
    iTrash
    TrahsMe
Go to www.macupdate.com and search for them.
Note, there is no guarantee these uninstallers will find all the potential stuff an app can install but even if it misses stuff no harm is done other than wasting a little disk space.
Oh, almost forgot.  Many apps that come with their own installers sometimes provide their own uninstallers to uninstall themselves.  Use those if they are provided instead of one of the generic uninstallers.

  • How do you uninstall applications from OS X?

I've been having problems with a couple of my applications, mainly Firefox (hangs, plus I prefer Safari anyway) and Office X (must be opened from the Applications folder and won't open by double-clicking on an Office document icon). I'd like to uninstall and then reinstall them, but I can't find any info anywhere (checked MS and Firefox sites as well as Apple OS X support site) on how to uninstall. (As you can tell I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to OS X.) Any help/advice would be appreciated!

    Hi Catti,
Some applications have an uninstall option in the installer. You run the installer as if you were going to put the app on the drive and choose Uninstall instead.
For those that don't come with an uninstall program, you simply put the application in the trash. So put Firefox in the trash. Then press Command+F and enter "Firefox" as the search string to find any other pieces it created on the drive. For sure you'll find a .plist file (a preferences file) and maybe a couple of other small folders. Put those in the trash, also. That's it.
Office has its own uninstall application on the CD. Run that to remove all traces of Office. Don't worry about your e-mail database if you're using Entourage. It won't remove that. But make a copy of it to your desktop first just to be safe.

How do I uninstall programs on my computer?

There are 3rd party softwares such as app delete or appzapper that can uninstall the program more cleanly (that's what I use).
    or
like sig said, mostly likely you just can just drag the app (from application folder) into the trash.
microsoft programs have uninstaller as an example.

  • How to safely uninstall programs in OS X 10.3.9?

I realize this may be a dumb question, but how do I safely remove programs from my computer? My iBook came with a lot of pre-installed software (such as a now-expired trial version of MS Office) that I don't need, and I would like to free up some disk space. Is it safe to just throw the program in the Trash? I'm used to the complicated world of Windows where you have to use the Add/Remove Programs utility - simply deleting the program seems too "easy" to me.
    Thanks, any help is appreciated!

    Hi Scott,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Here is what Microsoft has to say about uninstalling their Test Drive for 2004. The other thing to do is to search you computer for MS office and delete everything manually, preferences and all. But your best bet is to do what Microsoft says. theXlab has this to say.
    I hope that helps,

  • How to safely uninstall CS2 when CS3 is also on machine?

Hi, I want to purge my machine of CS2 but also have CS3 installed on same drive.  I know there is an uninstall PDF and would follow it without question if I did not have CS3 installed as well. I am worried that if I trash all these as instructed:
6 -- From the Utilities folder, drag the following items, if present, to the trash:
    •Adobe Utilities
    •Adobe Updater.app
7 -- From the Library folder, drag the following items, if present, to the trash:
    •Application Support/Adobe/AdobeHelpData
    •Application Support/Adobe/Assistance
    •Application Support/Adobe/StartupScripts/Workflow Automation Scripts
    •Preferences/Adobe/Workflow
    •Preferences/com.adobe.ActivationUtility.plist
    •Preferences/com.adobe.GoLive.plist
•Preferences/Adobe Save For Web GL 8.0 Prefs
8 -- From the Users/[user name] folder, drag the following items, if present, to the trash:
    •Library/Preferences Panes/Opera Preferences
    •Library/Caches/Opera Cache
    •Documents/AdobeStockPhotos
then surely that will stop CS3 from working?  Which is why I have held off from doing it for years already..
    thanks
    CF

Thanks Scott, think it must have been CS3 that began with the uninstaller, cannot see one in that file for CS3.  Yeah, can reinstall CS3 afterwards, just being lazy as it takes a long while as I recall and my Mac's Superdrive is unreliable right now - would be disastrous if I could not reinstall off the CD, maybe I should make a bootable copy on a HDD first.
    Anyway thanks for your help

    Hi,
Based on my research, RDP with SSL is using the certificate to authenticate the RD session host instead of the client.
If you want to authenticate users with certificates, I suggest you use smart card logon feature.

In addition to what's already been said you can also connect the iPad to iTunes and go to the Applications tab on the device and de-select the apps you don't want on the iPad anymore. You can also re-arrange the apps on the screens more easily. Then click Apply and then Sync. It's a faster way of doing it if you have more than a couple changes to make.

  • How can i uninstall applications?

I'd like to unistall some applications that I never use on the computer (garageband, i dvd, imovie). Any easy way to do it?

Those don't take up that much disk space unless you have an older MBP with a small hard drive. That said, if you want to rid yourself of them, simply drag them to the Trash. However, don't do that unless you have your original system restore disk(s) in case you find you need them later.
If you've run those programs, there may be some related files in User > (your user name) > Library > Application support. They are small and can be ignored.
