How to save my Mac's data/files

Okay I really hope this doesn't end up being a rant but here goes.
I was just using my Macbook Pro one day, like normal, when it decided to freeze up. This happens occasionally so I just held the power button and tried restarting the computer. However, when turning on, the Mac went BSoD (except it's a Mac so it was silver not blue), blanked out, and restarted again, going in cycles and cycles. Weeks later (I was on vacation) I took it to an Apple Store, where a "genius" did something to my laptop, which had apparently gone into "turtle mode." After a while he told me that "the house has burned down and we're trying to save what we can." Of course, he couldn't save anything from my hard drive. But actually, he could access some folders (Desktop, Downloads, Pictures, etc.) just like how they had been before, but every single one was empty. It was some kind of root (or route?) problem, in which something something can't access the hard drive something something (sorry I should have paid more attention but I'm pretty bad with computers d:). Not knowing what else to do, I let him "redo" my Mac, since, according to the "genius," it was the only option left. Now, it basically looks like all the other Macs in the apple store, with no saved files or anything.
When I asked the Apple Store guy what I could do to prevent my Mac from crashing without warning again, he just cheerily told me to back everything up. But this doesn't solve the actual PROBLEM.
So now what? I put everything I had on my backup disk back into my Macbook, but there's still a lot that got lost. Is there any way I can ever retrieve any of my stuff back? Anything I can do? I don't know why the hard drive malfunctioned--the large basic folders (basically what you see when you open the "Macintosh HD" at the top right corner of the desktop) and the names of the users were all still there, so something must have been saved even though they were all empty! My friend vaguely said there might be a way to get all my stuff back, but it would involve buying a new expensive hard drive, and that putting back all the stuff I had in my backup disk was a mistake.
Help would be greatly appreciated and thanks for reading all that.

Claire, I use a Mac w/ the latest copy of Skype and it IS possible to first play the file and then download it. Steps are available for it but it involves some technical wizardry that can be above some muggles. Then I found a post where some some VERY bright person made a small downloaded program for the Mac which once the video message has been played recently, you can run this program and download the file for safe keeping ( ALWAYS BACKUP or store it in the cloud for safety ) Kudos are deserved to user alvarop for this! http://community.skype.com/t5/Mac/Video-Message-Exporter-App/m-p/2351609 It worked for me to download a video message that I recently played back. How to save my emails and adressbook files from an old ibook (bought around 2002) ?
The screen from the old ibook doesn´t work anymore (logicboard problem I guess).
I saved everything else with starting it in target modus. That worked fine.
I want to delete the files after that as well, because I wanna give away the old ibook and don´t want anyone to read my emails!

Don't know how helpful this will be but I often copy mail from one computer to another, I drag the mail from the mail window to the other computers drop box, then from the other computer double click it and mail asks me what I want to do with it, of course without a screen you'd need to use back to my mac.
If you don't have back to my mac running, you could set up a second user account on the newer mac, import everything via target mode as suggested by c above, and then drag the mail to the first user account drop box.

As to the coordination part, as the user selects a record in the Control Block (CB), you will need to take the Key information and modify the Data Block's (DB) "DEFAULT_WHER E" block property. The logical place to put this code is the CB When-New-Record-Instance (WNRI) trigger. You code will look something like the following:

The Control block items are assigned with values in Form level (Key_exeqry).If your CD is populated from a single table, it would be better to create a Master - Detail relationship (as Abdetu) describes.

Based on your description, my understanding is that you want to save InfoPath form in XML file.
I have done a test in my SharePoint, Do the following steps:
Create an form library and publish an InfoPath form into it, Then when we create new document into the form library, it is by default that InfoPath form is saved in XML file.

linuxoid, I suspect he (and I) are looking for a way to save the contents. After all, a control that you can't get the information out of is pretty useless.
Styled text is often just a BLOB to the rest of the app. It is in my case, and it probably is in his.
I'm having the same trouble he is.
I want to make a JTextPane, let the user edit it, then get some reasonably portable representation of it's current contents that I can serialize. A string representation of XML sounds dandy. Incomprehensible binary is acceptable. A representation in some markup language that I can insert in some other document and have it act like I'm inserting text in the editor would make me more than happy.
Ideally, what I, and probably he, are looking for is something like
JTextPane myPainIsGreat = new JTextPane();
... life goes on...the user writes poetry and turns the words tacky colors...
String thisICanDealWith = myPainIsGreat.getStyledTextRepresentation();
knowing better I'd settle for
myPainIsGreat.writeStyled(someWriter)
sadly, JTextPane's write just returns unstyled text

I need to save 4 versions of the files, current and 3 prior. These versions should cycle off the oldest once a new version has been created.

Hi Sunitha,
The best way is to write a unix script in the unix server to do the job for you. Once The file is written in the server then leave the job from the unix side to get this done.
This is the best option i think. Writing a script is not a big task. You can call the script from ABAP or from an external daemon in the unix server. We have many such programs in our org.

Hi all, I want to save the contents of a file(,png file, not a text file) as a field in a class. Shall I have it as a string or byte array or something?
I have tried saving a file in a string but there were some problems with loading the file from a different platform. Following is my code.

You should use a byte array, and the binary streams (InputStream a& OutputStream). Never use Strings and Reader/Writer if you have binary data.

Hi, im not too sure (I thought it was a stock standard thing, sorry) so I'll fust give you the instructions my book has.
To save the curren InDesign Defaults file, Follow these steps:
1, Quit Adobe InDesigns CS5.
2, Locate The Indesigns Defaults file.
. In Windows, the InDesign Defaults file is located in the Documents and Settings/Users/Username/Library/ Application Data/ Adobe/ InDesign/ Version 7.0/en_US folder.
3, Drag the Indesign Defaults file to another folder on you hard drive.
When you launch Adobe Indesign CS5 after moving the InDesigns Defaults file to another folder, a new InDesign Defaults file is automatically created and all prefrences and defaults are reset to their original factory setting.
Okay that's all of it and as far I can get is to the app data, for some reason my notebook doesnt have it and I've been trying to find other ways of getting to it but im having no luck. I would really like to avoid the Ctrl+ Alt+Shift thing because I'll apparently lose any saved settings that I might want to keep.

As long as you are using the Report Generation Toolkit, there is no need to use ActiveX for the purpose of saving the Excel file -- Save Report will do that for you. You can then export (as text) all of the Excel data and use the Write Spreadsheet File to make the .CSV file. Here is how I would rewrite the final bits of your code --
I cleaned up the wires around Excel Easy Table a bit. You'll see I made a VI Icon for Replace Filename, which does (I think) a nicer job of self-documenting than showing its Label. To make the filename, add the correct extension (.xlsx for Excel, .csv for CSV), use Build Path to combine Folder and Filename, and wire to Save Report.
The next two functions add the Extract Everything and Write to Spreadsheet, using a Comma as a separator, which makes a CSV copy for you.
