How to search contact names only

Hello! I have quite a bit of a problem. I get in contact with a lot of people and have over 500 contacts. Now for each contact I usually copy and paste emails or whatever and add it into the notes section under each contact. Now when I try to search for something in the contacts APP, for example, if I type John Doe,
everything would be searched, even all the John Doe in the notes field would be search also. So emails would show up ([email protected]) instead of the actual contact name itself. So it causes a bit of problem scrolling through all these search just to find a contact number/email. Any way to limit the search to only the contact names and nothing else?

Hi --
It's all a moot point now. I just selected All Photos, put the Broswer into full window grid view, set the thumb size very small, and started scrolling down -- stopping whenever I saw the distinctive Stack patch.
The reason for all this was to do a final clean up of some lingering Rotated vs. Non-Rotated duplicates which were still in my iPhoto Libraries before I imported them into my new Aperture Library. In Aperture, they became Stacks in which one image was Keyworded as an "iPhoto Original" and the other as an "iPhoto Edited".
But now I have a new Search question which perhaps you might have a suggestion for. The thread is at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1771699&tstart=0
Thanks,
John Bertram

Hey, that's one thing I actually know how to do with regexes! All package descriptions have some spaces at their beginning, the package names themselves have not, so you can just use inverted grepping like so:
    $ pacman -Ss test | grep -v '^ '
    core/perl 5.10.1-5 (base)
    extra/fprint_demo 0.4-2 (fprint)
    extra/ghc 6.12.1-2

    arch-games/mangler-snapshot 1.1.20100116-3
    arch-games/ultimatestunts 0.7.5.1-1
This still shows the repos and the versions (nothing cut wouldn't be able to handle though). It works fine with pacman as you just saw, I can't guarantee for yaourt as I don't have it installed.
Edit: Hm… I just realized that this still displays the results where 'test' only occured in the package description. Give me some time to figure this out.
Edit 2: Another grep for 'test' would solve it:
    $ pacman -Ss test | grep -v '^ ' | grep test
    extra/memtest86+ 4.00-1
    extra/perl-test-pod 1.41-1
    extra/testdisk 6.11.3-2

    community/perl-test-nowarnings 1.01-1
    community/perl-test-tester 0.107-1
    community/perl-test-warn 0.21-2
    community/phoronix-test-suite 2.4.0-1
    arch-games/ultimatestunts 0.7.5.1-1
Still, it's not that pretty to write the same thing twice. If you really want to do it like this, I suggest you make it a function in your ~/.${SHELL}rc.

My messages won't say the contact name only shows the phone number, how do you change this when the contact is in my phone under that number already?

I thought that at first, but I have text this person before and had received responses in a timely manner. Its just weird that it all of a sudden removed their name.
Would this affect the delivery of the text message?

  • E71 how to search contact by phone number

    Hi All,
any idea for E71 how to search contact by phone number? sometimes it will be useful if  i can just type in the phone number and it show me the contact name
    Thanks

There is no way to do that directly from Home Screen, however you can always get in the "Search: Internet and My Content" application, choose contacts and start to type phone number. You will get what you want.

  • Missing Contact Names - Only Numbers Showing - All Yahoo Contact Data Gone

The other day I did a sync and afterward in the phone tab, all my Favorites and Recents are displaying numbers and NOT the names of my contacts as they had always done before.
Further, if I click on the "Contacts" tab, there are only 10 contacts listed when before there were several hundred!
This was just a sync, no software update. I have tried several troubleshooting steps including:
    1. Checked my Yahoo account online to make sure all contact info still exists there, it does.
    2. Re-entered my Yahoo credentials in iTunes to make sure contact info was syncing. It accepted credentials as expected.
    3. I restored my iPhone using the latest backup (from a few days prior) with no luck.
    4. I restored my iPhone from a backup several months ago (July) and my contact names were back...but all my music, apps, photos, video, etc. was gone so I restored back to the most recent backup.
    5. I then imported all my Yahoo contacts into my Gmail account and then added my Gmail account to the phone in the hope that it would grab the contact names. Nope.
So now I'm stuck and looking for assistance from anyone who can offer my advice on what else I may try if anything. This seems to be a reoccurring issue with Yahoo contacts on the forums here as of late with different people experiencing slightly different behavior (like me having all numbers but missing names and other people having names but no numbers).
What's going Yahoo? What's going on Apple?
What's the fix, or at least a workaround???

    Update on the Gmail workaround:
Importing all my Yahoo contacts to Gmail and then choosing to sync Google/Gmail contacts in iTunes before syncing seemed to do the trick.
I think this is definitely a Yahoo contacts problem and not necessarily iPhone.
    Any thoughts?

  • How to search contacts in the new version?

    What the heck Skype?!
    I have hundreds of contacts.
Before I could simply go to my contacts and SEARCH!
Now? Scroll forever? Also sometimes I have like "FULL NAME MOBILE / HOME",
thats not displaying since it is too long...
As I could search before I could rule out items by typing for example "Na Ho", I would only get "FULL NAME HOME"...
Usebility is not good in this version! Let me search my contacts please?
    EDIT:
Here two links, old Support Article mentiones search, new one does not.

yes i just reported the exact same problem. this seems to be the most basic function to have a glich in it is beyond me. how can someone conduct business without being able to access their contacts?? skype is truly ridiculous when it comes to fixing bugs and is simply creating more and more problems with every version.

  • How to search contacts by street

I would like to be able to search my contacts by street name or other data that is entered in the contact.

  • Spotlight: search by name only (default setting?)

How do I make my finder search, i.e Spotlight, default so that it searches only "by name?"

It's a little hairy but it can be done. Here are two links:

If you don't feel like going to all that trouble, consider adding the freeware utility EasyFind to your Tiger machine. It's a much quicker and more reliable way of performing name searches than Spotlight.

  • Make Windows 7 search function search file names only

    Hello,
Is there a way to search for a file name (like in previous versions of Widows) rather than searching for anything containing that word? For example,
I want to search a for files with the word 'Pension' in the title, but intead I receive thousands of results for files called containing the word pension as well as those with 'pension' in the title.
    Thanks!

Yeah, I know.  It works for some and not for others.  It depends on cryptic settings that waste more time than it takes to find the files manually.  I have run searches for simple file names...nothing complicated, with indexing on and off.
I let it run overnight until it was fully complete.  It left out 33 results, including what I was looking for.  With Agent Ransack, all of the results were found...including what I was looking for in less than a minute.  Google Windows 7 search
problems sometime and you will find pages and pages of people with problems trying to tweak it left and right hoping it would work.  In the end, it is simply not worth the time when much more efficient and free alternatives are available.
What do you want me to say? If you don't know how to use the solution, then you just don't know. I can't make it any simpler for you as to where the problem is at,  and you need not cry about it.

  • How to search contacts using Yahoo Address Book

I'm sure this is nothing new to many of you, but it was a great discovery for me today. I struggle with not having a contact search on my iPhone -- often remembering the company name but not the person's name. With my Treo, I could search the entire device including contacts, emails, etc. and find what I needed but we're not there yet with the iPhone.
One way I found around this is to sync your contacts in iTunes with Yahoo Address Book. I then went to address.yahoo.com on the iPhone, logged in and up comes my contacts with a search field at the top of the page. The search engine always found what I wanted and when I go back to the bookmarked site, I don't have to re-login. I also can click on a phone number in a contact on the web page and dial the number.
So effectively this is a one click for safari, one click for bookmarks and one click for Yahoo Address book and you have a contact search engine. This will be a good workaround for me until Apple hopefully does an update to include contact search.

Unfortunately I do not believe this will work for me.
But it is still a "Rube Goldberg" approach to a function that should be included with the contact list.
I sometimes remember the last name, sometimes the first name, and sometimes I remember the company, when I do not remember the name, and...
sometimes I remember what town the company is in if I can't remember anything else.

  • Searching Document Names Only

Need some help with this one. I want to configure TREX to only search through the name of a document/folder. I want to turn off the searching within a document.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Craig,
If you want to do this globally (for all indexes) you could set the "Indexable" flags to "Off" for all properties except for displayname.

I found JFileChooser but I don't really want to use that because it just wouldn't be right ... so any help would be nice, a link to somewhere, or another word to try and search
    thanks

    Look at the File API...
list() or listFiles() methods will return an array with every file and directory within a directory.
