  • How much hard drive do I need on the Macbook Pro?

I am buying a Macbook Pro 13" to use for email, internet, word processing and photo editing (in raw and jpeg).  It comes wtih 500 or 750 GB Seriesl ATA hard drive which is way more hard drive than I need.  I will keep most of my photos on an external hard drive and in a cloud and retain about a thousand photos on the Macbook's hard drive at a time for viewing and processing.  I would like to upgrad to the Solid State hard drive but want to choose the least amount of hard drive that would be sufficient for the applications I would like to run and the realtively small amount of photos I want to store on the Macbook Pro.  Do you think this would be sufficient?  Is the solid state hard drive so much better than the serieal ata hard drive that it would be a good investment?

The downside of moving a lot of your storage to an external hard drive is that then you need a second external hard drive on which to back the first one up, and you need to remember to actually DO the backups regularly. I greatly prefer to have a large enough internal drive to store all my files, just because it makes backing them all up so much easier (and therefore more likely to be done often).
As for the downside of SSDs, do they need any more downside than costing several times more per GB of storage than hard drives? Particularly when they're still in their early childhood, are still improving by leaps and bounds, and better SSDs will probably cost half or less than half as much per GB a year from now as they do today? There's more than enough downside to discourage me from buying an SSD now. Thanks, but I'll wait for prices to come down, sizes to increase, the limited-write-cycles problem to be addressed on Macs, and SSDs' long-term reliability to be more definitively confirmed. And frankly, I just don't care whether a file takes half a second or three seconds to open. I can afford to wait 20 or 30 seconds a day.

  • In plain english, how do I replace my hard drive in my OSX Lion equipped macbook pro?

Hi, I have a late 2009 13" macbook pro. It is running OSX lion 10.7.5. It only has a 250GB hard drive, and I want to upgrade it to a 7200 rpm 750gb hard drive. (yes I know, SSD blah blah blah, when those become cheaper, I'll think about it)
I have a brand new 7200 rpm 750gb western digital notebook hard drive, on it's way here. I also have a hard drive enclosure on it's way as well.
Can someone walk me through, step by step, how to complete the process of copying everything over to my new hard drive? I can tackle the actual drive install, that is no problem.
Since I have OSX Lion, I have to copy the recovery partition over first right? How is that actually accomplished?

With either of the 2 programs I mentioned. Yes OS X. You Clone the complete drive, OS, Programs and all files on the drive, to an external drive and or a separate partition on an external drive. You can then Boot the computer off that external drive. You have to have an external, or partition on the external, big enough to fit whatever is on your drive now and then some extra space. Carbon Copy Cloner will allow you to Clone the Recovery HD partition over to the external also. Not sure if SuperDuper does this as I haven't used either of them in awhile.

Awesome, I appreciate the response. When you say "clone my current install", you're talking about OSX right? So how do I actually clone the current install?
The drive I purchased is a WD "black" scorpion drive, not blue or green.

  • How can i tell how much hard drive space my website is taking up on my computer?

I have a website that i build through iweb and publish via mobile me.  i have about 200 podcasts on the site, and I am trying to figure out how much hard drive space this is taking up on my computer.  these files are not in itunes, and i'm not concerned about the space they are taking up in my cloud, i just want to know how much space on my computer they are taking up because i'm trying to decide if i should move my iweb site to a different computer to alleviate some space issues.  any help would be much appreciated.

Check the size of the Domain.site2 file that is in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  it contains all of the files used to create and publish your site.  I'm not sure if it copies the podcasts into it or not. You can open the domain package and do a search for them. Just don't move, rename or delete any files inside that package or your site is toast.

Select the drive and choose Get Info from the File menu, or open any folder on it and choose Show Status Bar from the Finder's View menu if it isn't already displayed.

How do I find out how much hard drive space I'm using? My system profiler doesn't tell me didley.

Hello! Single click on your hard drive icon to select it and then under the file menu in the finder choose "get info" and then information will be displayed. Or if you're using a two button mouse do a right click on the HD icon and choose "get info". Tom

  • Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro?  From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended.  But how/where?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

how large of a hard drive can i put in my Macbook Pro (early 2011) and where can i get one?

You can find answers to both at OWC as well as installation tutorials. I think you will find 1 to 1.5 TBs are the largest.

  • Firefox is using too much hard drive space

According to my control panel, mozilla firefox is taking 8gb of my hard drive.

I think it is very strange also, but I did end up uninstalling it and reinstalling it on my hdd instead of my ssd. In doing so I free'd up 5gb of hard drive space on my ssd. I have no idea why it would have taken up so much hard drive space in the first place though.
