How to See PC's on a wireless network

I have recently created a wireless network in my home for my  wife's desktop, my laptop and our TiVo DVR.  I can see the DVR from both PC's as well as transfer files to and from the DVR to either PC.  Question I have is why can't the two PC's see each other?  I am running Windows XP-Pro on my laptop and my wife has Windows 2000.  As far as Linksys equipment, I have a wireless-G adapter (PCMCIA) card in my laptop, a wireless-B adapter (USB) on the TiVo DVR and a wireless router (B/G compatible) wired into my wifes desktop.
I would like to be able to link my wife's PC with my laptop for file transfers, etc. and I can't seem to get it to work.  Am I missing something with this setup?  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks..

Try turning off your windows firewall on both computers. Also any virus suite that you may have that has a firewall need to be set. Go to your personal firewall and go to trusted IPs. Click on trust my entire network, ans save the settings. That should allow you to see all pc's on your network.

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!

  • How to Connect Airport Express to Existing Wireless Network (Client Mode)

I am posting this for everyone tearing their hair out trying to connect the Airport Express to your own existing home wireless network. After spending 2 hours last night installing this on my father-in-law's home network, I hope to be able to save someone else the agony we went through.
    So here's the situation:
Say you already have your own home network set up, and all you want is to be able to use AirTunes to play music off iTunes into your speaker system. And, you don't need the printer sharing capability nor creation of another wireless network (2 of the features of Airport Express). Then this solution is for you - read on.
Unfortunately, Apple's user manual is very unclear how to connect Airport Express to your own network. When you look at the picture diagram they provide, they show Airport Express picking up its signal from another Apple-oriented base. This can make you think you need to buy another piece of hardware to make it work. DON'T If you read through the manual, the Support section here, etc., you will hear lots of talk about "Client Mode" - and that this is the only way to get it to work. Nice - but no one really tells you how to set up the Airport in client mode.
Do yourself a favor, toss that user manual aside and run these steps.
(Note: These directions assume your DSL/Cable Modem is hooked up to a wireless router or acts as its own wireless router)
    1. Get a cat5 Ethernet cable (anything but an orange cable - that's a crossover cable) like you would use to connect your PC to your router to pick up the Internet.
    2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the router on one end, and to the Airport Express unit on the other end.
    3. Plug in your Airport Express unit to the wall (this will not necessarily become its permanent location - you will be able to move it later). The light will glow solid Amber for about 30-45 seconds while it starts up, then blink Amber. At this point, the unit is ready to operate.
    4. Install the CD to the PC where your iTunes music is stored. This should be painless. Once you open the program, it should detect the Airport unit.
    5. At this point, the on-screen wizard will present you with your options, and walk you through the setup. This is much like the user manual describes - and you should be good to go form here forward.
    Some pointers:
    - When asked if you want to create a new network, join an existing network, or connect via Ethernet, choose the middle option for joining an existing network. You will need to know the name of your network, the password to connect to the network (if present), and the type of encryption used on the network (e.g. WEP, WPA, etc.). Side note, WPA is recommended, as it is a higher level of security than WEP. You will be able to configure the Airport Express unit to automatically login to your network.
    - I would recommend, when creating a password for the Airport Express unit, use the same password as your network, to avoid confusion.
    6. The very last step will ask you to save the settings to the Airport Express. Here's the kicker - when you save the settings, you are TRICKING the Airport Express into no longer acting as a network broadcaster, but instead being a "slave" to your own network. What do I mean? You will lose the connection from your PC to the Airport Express - an error message will pop up telling you the unit can no longer be found. While you might think you did something wrong, you actually were successful!
    7. Unplug your Airport Express, and disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router and the Airport unit. This will no longer be needed.
    8. Go to your desired location where you want to plug in your Airport Express unit. Before plugging it in, connect your Audio cable from the Airport Express to your audio receiver. Once that is connected, then plug in the Airport Express unit. The light will glow solid Amber for 30-45 seconds while it loads, and then will blink Amber for a brief period of time before turning solid GREEN. When this happens, you have successfully connected the Airport Express to your home network!
    9. Go back to your PC with iTunes. Open the Airport software - you should now have a listing for your Airport Express unit in the upper left. Click on this, and the wizard will guide you through connecting - you will need the password you created for the unit. You only need to go through this wizard once, and when finished, the software will tell you that can now use iTunes with your Airport unit.
    10. Open iTunes. On the lower right, you will see a dropdown for Speakers, and it should be defaulted to My Computer. Click on that drop-down, and you will see the name of your Airport unit. Click on that name, and now your music will broadcast to the Airport unit!
    11. Play a song in iTunes. Go to your audio receiver, and connect it to the channel for your external connection to the Airport Express unit. You should hear your music from iTunes. CONGRATULATIONS! =)
I hope these instructions were helpful - I am happy to answer any questions, so feel free to contact me, *******************@*****.**.

Thanks for the detailed directions. You are absolutely correct in stating that people should toss the user manual; it's pretty worthless. I have had a problem setting up my new Airport Express as I have described in an earlier post - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1839873&tstart=45
One quick question - does using your setup process set the AE up as part of a distributed network where the AE is acting as a wireless router where it is extending the range of your network? Or, is it simply a wireless connection to your stereo for iTunes? I am interested in having both, since my AE will be at the other end of the house from the main wireless router.
    Thanks

  • Step by step on how to add tc to existing netgear wireless network please

    Hi,
Please can someone give me a step by step on how to achieve a working wireless network with a netgear DGN2000 router providing the network, my TC available for back ups / itunes library & an airport express to connect a usb printer into the network?
    Currently have following:
ADSL Internet connection into Netgear DGN2000 Wireless N Router/Modem
    TC
    Airport Express
    Macbook Pro (running Lion)
    iPad (running OS5)
    iPhone (running OS5)
    Windows 7 laptop (personal)
Windows XP laptop (work - so locked down on installing new software)
    USB Printer
I did have it set up but think went a bit wrong and used TC as creating wireless network - and could no longer use work laptop over VPN - so have reverted back to netgear only.
Please could someone give me / point me towards a blonde friendly step by step on how to set up my network so everyone is happy?!
    Thank you!!

Suggest that you start by configuring hte AirPort Express to "join" the wireless network that is being provided by the Netgear router.
In order to do this, you must provide the AirPort Express with the exact information that it needs to be able to join the network. This includes:
    Name of the wireless network
Exact type of wireless security that the router is using
    Password for the wireless network
I'm sure that you know the name of the wireless network and the password, but do you know the exact type of wireless security setting that the Netgear router is using? You may need to get into the configuration pages for this information.
Hopefully, it will be WPA2 Personal, or WPA/WPA2 Personal, which the AirPort Express can match. If you see something like WPA-PSK-TKIP or WPA-PSK-AES, then things get more complicated, likely requiring some trail and error.
Once you have the wireless security settings in hand, you are ready to follow Apple's step by step setup for the AirPort Express using the AirPort Utility application on your Mac.
When you have the Express configured, you will already know how to setup the TC, since it will be configured exactly the same way with the same information.
This assumes that you want the TC to connect using wireless only.
It would be much easier to setup the TC to connect to the Netgear router using an Ethernet cable. You will be able to backup to the TC using the Netgear wireless network. Can you consider that option?

  • How to get MBP to "trust" my wireless network?

Hello, I'm using a Macbook Pro with a Linksys wireless router. Every time I boot the MBP, it says "can't find any trusted wireless networks", or something to that effect. I go to the airport menu and my network is listed there, and it works fine once I click it. I'd like to figure out how to make the network "trusted" so that the MBP can just join it by default. I've searched through the system preferences and the network menus and I can't find any reference to "trusted networks"...any help?

    There is another wireless network
that the computer tries to automatically connect to,
    could this be a problem?
    Yes.
Ensure that it is no the in the Preferred Networks list.
Change the channel of your wireless router.
    Also, in the Preferred
Networks list, the password associated with the
correct network is a long hexadecimal string, not the
alphanumeric password which I normally use. The
security type is WPA personal, and the router is a
    linksys WRT54G with latest firmware.
Try creating a new network name (SSID) and a new password and see if that makes a difference.
Try creating a new location and see if that helps.

  • How can I set up a home wireless network with Comcast high speed internet?

I just signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. I was able to get my Power Mac onto the internet. However, I connected my Airport Extreme and am unable to get it to recognize that I have an internet connection. I want to set up a wireless network in my apartment. Comcast tech support said that I only have one IP address.
Any suggestions as to how I can get my wireless network up and going? Thanks!

Should I change set up so that cable goes from the cable modem directly to Airport Extreme and then use the ports on the Extreme to run Ethernet Cable to Power Mac and other devices?
    Yes
As an aside, would this setup allow me to hook my iBook up to Airport via Ethernet cable and let it get into Internet that way?
    Yes

  • Setting up HP Officejet 6500A; not sure how to connect to web w/ home wireless network

I have a small home wireless network.  I set the printer up today but it says that I must connect to the internet (fax part is working).  The only desktop I have, I keep off most the time and just use my laptop (which is for work so I can't set the printer up to this).
Is there a way to connect the printer directly to my router?  They are only a few feet from one another; however, I have no clue how to do it and the instructions manual didn't tell me much.  Do I need a phone line?  What would I use to connect the two?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Use an Ethernet cable, available in any tech store, online or even Target will have them.
Plug it into the back of the printer and router.  You should be able to add the printer to your laptop.  Let me know what operating system you have and I can help.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

If you are using an Apple router then use Airport Utility in the Utilities folder. Otherwise, consult the user manual for your router.

  • G4 (MDD) with AirPort Can't See/Won't Connect to Wireless Networks

Hi all. I've seen topics/threads that get close to my question/problem, but not quite.
    I inherited a PowerMac G4 (MDD)/Dual 1 GHz/1.5 GB DDR SDRAM/running 10.3.9.
I purchased a used original AirPort card from eBay, opened up the machine, and plugged it in. When I went to update the software (from a CD), my machine told me that it was up to date (though one HD is running OS9 and one running OSX -- so the software wouldn't install because the HD running OSX said it was up-to-date and the HD running 9 said it was impossible). The machine recognizes the card/shows it gray in the toolbar/says it has Firmware Version 8.70 in the System Profile.
My problem is that the AirPort can't see any wireless networks 99% of the time, even though 3 (including mine) are in range all the time. I've seen my network only flicker into possibility a few times, and even though I've disabled all security measures on the wireless router (Linksys Wireless-G, Model WRT54G), it simply won't connect. One time in 3 hours it momentarily looked like it was going to connect, then said "out of range," then disappeared completely. It has seen 0 wireless networks for the past hour.
I've read everything far and wide trying to solve this issue and am totally stuck. At first I thought I needed an antenna for the AirPort, but this is an internal card, so that doesn't seem right. I know the AirPort card (and not Extreme) is right because a) I don't have a FW800 port and b) the machine recognizes this card. Finally, I thought it may have had to do with the WPA security on the Linksys, but even with security disabled...nothing.
I'm feeling very frustrated. Any advice?
    Thank you very much.

Thanks, Tom. I did as you suggested, and the Max Signal under the Log is showing a red 12, which is terrible, yes? What, exactly, does this tell me? That this is simply a case of old technology (AirPort b) struggling to communicate with new technology (Linksys g) over a medium distance (Linksys is in next room, through wall)? If plugging straight into the ethernet were an option, I'd just do it. But I can't get my G4 onto the Internet without running cords down the hallway and through my TV room, which is an obvious eyesore.
Is there a chance this AirPort card is only partly functional and I should return it? Or do I need to accept the fact that this G4 needs to either be moved closer to the Linksys router or be plugged in directly?
    Thank you.

  • How to set-up a DUAL BAND wireless network.

Lots of people are reporting problems caused by replacing an existing wireless network with the new Airport Extreme 802.11n base station.
    * Xbox360 compatibility.
    * Airtunes issues
    * 802.11n slowed down by 802.11g devices
One workaround is to set-up a dual-band network. Your old 802.11g base station looks after the older "g" devices. And the new Airport Extreme looks after the 802.11n devices.
There are a number of benefits to this solution.
    * Everything that did work, carries on working. No reconfiguring needed.
    * Everything works at its fastest possible speed. You can use the full 270Mb 5Ghz band for n devices.
    * 802.11g traffic does not interfere with 802.11n traffic at all.
    * It's easy to set up.
    The downside is
    * There are two boxes. I want one.
    This is the diagram (again)
Note that in this configuration, the new Airport Extreme base station is set-up in Bridging Mode.

I've done some testing and here are my findings:
    - 2 Computers, 1 C2D N enabled and iMac G only in 2 diff rooms
    - 2 AX to stream music
    - Transfer of a 446 Mb avi file from Airdisk to C2D
    - 2 Wifi Networks: 1) G only from a Netopia 2) Depending from settings from AE(n), Both Base Station are placed aside. When G network is available both AX are connected.
    - With or No airtunes means a stream to the 2 AX from iMac while transferring the 446 Mb file to the C2D.
    446 MB / AE(n) 5 Ghz N / No Airtunes / Netopia Off / 2:47
    446 MB / AE(n) 2.4 Ghz N Only / Auto Ch / No Airtunes / Netopia Off / 2:13
    446 MB / AE(n) 5 Ghz N / No Airtunes / Netopia On / 3:14
    446 MB / AE(n) 5 Ghz N / With Airtunes / Netopia On / 3:20
    446 MB / AE(n) 2.4 Ghz N Only / Auto Ch/ No Airtunes / Netopia On / 2:29
    446 MB / AE(n) 2.4 Ghz N Only / Auto Ch / With Airt / Netopia On / Unusable
    446 MB / AE(n) 2.4 Ghz Mixed / Auto Ch / No Airtunes / Netopia Off / 2:17
    446 MB / AE(n) 2.4 Ghz Mixed / Auto Ch / With Airtunes / Netopia Off / 3:03
    Here are the findings:
    - Without any G network (meaning no Airtunes possible) the 2.4 Ghz N Only performs much better than the 5 Ghz N
    - While streaming Music the 2.4 Ghz Mixed performs better then the 5 Ghz N (Dual Band Network)!
These are my findings with my settings, it could be different, but I'm pretty sure you will find the same behavior on your side. And BTW, the theoretical thru-put means nothing, only real life usage testing is worth something. So on my side I'm going for a single mixed network.
Hope this sheds light for some of you.

  • How do i make my mac choose wireless networks based on signal strengh

i have a MBP, the newest one and i was wondering of there was a way to make it conect to different wireless networks depending on signal strengh. this is because it being a laptop it moves around the house and as we have several routers sometimes it connects to one that is very far away even when it is next to another. if anyone has a solution it wuld be mych appreciated.
    Thanks
    Anthony

    Hi,
According to the specifications here, the MBR1000 router has four LAN ports. Any G3 model has built-in Ethernet (an RJ-45 port). This means that you should be able to establish at least a wired connection.
A DSL modem (if it has Ethernet output) would be connected to the WAN port of the router. Apparently, the router in question is capable of using a 3G mobile broadband (USB or ExpressCard) modem as an alternative Internet source.
For a (local) Wi-Fi connection between computer and router, you could connect a wireless Ethernet bridge (also known as a gaming adapter) to the G3's Ethernet port. Wireless Ethernet bridge examples include D-Link DWL-G820, Linksys WET54G and Linksys WGA600N. These devices do not require special drivers, and can thus be used under almost any operating system.

  • How to connect to an ieee stander wireless network in school

I am a student of UNM.
we can't get the wireless connection to our ece deperment if OSX is above 10.5.
we can get the connect under windows and linux but not Mac.
I did asked our IT about this issuse, thire answer was Apple didn't following ieee wireless stander on newer osx.
I tried all the solution on interstant including using iphone developer tools, but it doesn't work.
Is any possible that feture update can fix this problem?

That's a neat trick they used there, relying on IEEE standards, which never had any requirement for interoperability. Their wireless network, while IEEE standard, is not WiFi CERTIFIED as it still uses TKIP.
TKIP on WPA was an interim solution to WEP.

  • How to configure Airport Express to Extend Wireless Network

I have an Airport Extreme (AE1) as my wireless router, with two other Airport Extremes (AE2 and AE3) connected to it via ethernet and operating in bridge mode. Together they cover the first floor of my house with wifi, but I want to use an Airport Express (AX1) situated on the second floor to connect wirelessly to AE2 and extend my wifi network to the second floor of my house.
Nothing I have tried has allowed AX1 to extend my wireless network. I'm using the latest Airport utility in Mavericks, and AX1 is the old plug-in type but it's the newer "n" version that is still configurable by Airport Utility. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I almost ALWAYS recommend against wirelessly extending your network. Obviously, I'm unfamiliar with your layout but 3 extremes on the same floor seems like overkill, too, but could make sense depending upon contruction and usage.
    In any event -
Adding Wi-Fi base stations when it is unnecessary can reduce Wi-Fi throughput because the Wi-Fi network will require more data management overhead. The network configuration also becomes more complex. In the case of a wirelessly extended network, throughput may be reduced to less than 60 percent of that of a single device.
Risk free test - run some speedtests in the corners then remove an extreme and re-run the tests. Then, buy one of the new tower 'AC' extremes and set it up as your single router and test again. I call this risk free since you have 14 days to return the new 'tower' extreme if you don't want to keep it but its range is THAT much better than the prior gen. You could make this cheaper by buying it from the Apple refurbished store and selling your older extremes.

I think you will need to use NI Vision and the NI-IMAQdx driver. If you have these and MAX installed, you should be able to see/find the camera under Devices and Interfaces >> NI-IMAQdx Devices. Once you have it there, you can write a LabVIEW application that acquires/displays the data from the camera.
Here are some articles that discuss how to do it:

    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5750/en/ (Second page)
Note that it's a GigE (gigabit ethernet) camera so you may not get the full resolution/framerate over a wireless connection.
