How to see SATA drive in dos

Hi,
I've got a K8N Neo2 and have fitted a SATA drive as my system disk. When I boot to a floppy, I can't find the SATA drive. Do I need some kind of driver like you do for a CD-ROM when booting to DOS?
Thanks

Go into Bios & change 1st boot device to CD or use F11 & select CD
provided youve got only the Sata Hard Disc Conected you wont need to load any drivers, at the F6 prompt (covered in Link) to load any Sata/Raid.
If more than 1 HD is Present then The MSI Floppy should be inserted & the Raid & Sata Drivers Loaded, this requires pressing the F6 button twice 1st load Raid or Sata 2nd Load the Other.
See the Section  How to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program should help you.
Whilst in Windows set up you dont need to partition & Format the Full drive if you dont want to just select a size for your Primary (OS) Partition, Type the size in megabytes (MB) Always confuses me at this stage I have GB in my mind & the Size never seems to come out as I expect. S/be GB x 1024
You can carve the rest of the drive up from Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Storage / Disc Management. Advantage of this ois that you can look around your new OS whilst windows Sorts the Partitions/ formating out.
Hope this helps - Shout if u get stuck

  • Novice - How To Install SATA Drive on K8N Neo2 Platinum

My current 2 SATA drives are almost at max capacity and hooked up to SATA 3 & 4 slots.  How do I go about installing a new SATA drive on slot 1 or 2?  I thought SATA was plug n play and all I had to do was enable SATA ports 1 to 4 in BIOS.  I've searched online and found articles pertaining to limitations on SATA slots 1&2, RAID configuration, VT8237 & Promise 20579 drivers --- and I am utterly confused
This is the hard drive that I've been eyeing.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822148144  I only want to attach it to a bay in my PC and use it as storage, not install Windows.  Can someone provide clear cut directions for a novice like me on how to install it?

Enable the sata ports, which you intend to use with it.
Jumper drive to sata I mode.
    Connect new drive.
Boot into windows and go to disk management where you will see it listed.
You will need to partition and format it there.
Once completed it will show up in My Computer and be ready to use.

Does the same hold true with Windows 2000?  No need to F6 and add drivers for a single SATA (WD Raptor 36GB) drive?
I am having a devil of a time getting my K8N Neo Plat seeing this single drive, and shall try the tricks in the FAQ thread: Single SATA or Multiple Drive Array Setup FAQ
I cannot even format the SATA drive in the MSI - the system locks up, aborts, or I see ASCII characters in the screen after "format terminated" messages.  Drive formats fine in my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe.

  • Can't get Windows XP to see SATA drives

    Please help
SATA Drives show up in the system hardware but not in My Computer or Explorer
K8T Neo FIS2R (Updated BIOS Yesterday via Live Update)
    amd 64 3000+
    Centon PC3200 (2 X 512 in slots 1 and 2)
WD 80 gig ATA drive (Windows Xp Home on this drive)
2 Maxtor 250 GIG SATA Drives (tried both Raid 0 and no Raid)
All drivers from CD installed (Updated drivers via Live Update Yesterday)
Promise disabled and using VIA slots
    Nvidia FX 5900 Video card

    Good evening -
Thanks for the response. I loaded drivers from CD.  I want to keep the operating system on the 80 GIG ATA drive and use the SATA RAID for programs.  The drives show up in the device manager and in the VIA RAID utility that came with the motherboard but I can't see or access them through My Computer.  I have tried to set up the RAID through both the Windows software and through the Boot program, but no luck.  When I tried to update the drivers from the floppy it said no newer drivers found. (I tried to update drivers through the Device manager.)  Also when I deleted the raid and tried to set up the drives individually the same thing happened.  Is it possible I don't have the BIOS set up correctly? I am at a loss.

  • K8MM-V - how to get sata drive working in bios

    Hi,
I've attached a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160GB sata drive to the pc now. On chip SATA is enabled. I get a message at staet up that I should press tab to enter setup. I do that.. Then I get a message that I only have one sata drive and therefore cannot create RAID. There are other options but I cannot enter anyof them (the create / delete array stuff on the left is dark blue). I can't even view status, or confirm any choice (or select any choice). It does show my sata drive below on Serial_CH0. But there is no array name (as I haven't been able to create one). Do I have to set the drive jumper settings or something? I don't know what's going on.. Also.. I ran the maxtor tools cd.. it didn't pick up the drive. Someone please help.
    Thanks,
    Has
    Specs:
    AMD Sempron 2800+
    Board: K8MM-V
512MB DDR 333mhz Ram (less 64 MB for VGA)
    OS: Winxp home sp2 , Win NT 4 sp6a
HD: Maxtor Diamondmax 80GB 7200rpm, Maxtor Diamondmax plus 9 160 GB SATA
    Lieton DVD Rom

You don't need to define an array, just install windows on it (use the driver disk too)
With 1 drive connected, it's working like a normal SATA controller.
I have the same here, you don't need to configure anything.
Except for maybe the boot-order in the BIOS, mine has two types of orders.
For the Harddisk you should have something like:
    1st Floppy -> 2nd CDrom -> 3th HD-0 or IDE-0 (whatever try call it in there)
Then you look at the Harddisk Boot priority, where is should say something like Sata-disk and second addin-card.
Not sure if your BIOS is the same, but that's how it works here.
Basicaly, if you have no PATA IDE drive's connected it should work by just connecting the drive.
And yes, the BIOS will continiu to mention there is no raid, don't bother about that as a single drive can't be a raid.

  • 865PE neo 3-won't see sata drive after cmos reset

cpu-z reports i have a ms-6728; the mobo has 865PE neo three. i was having some problems with memory and used the jumpers to reset the cmos.
now the bios will not see my sata drive. took the drive out and to a shop and it is seen fine at the shop. running of my ide ata drive.
looked at manual and in my bios i don't have the option under "on chip IDE configuration" in my bios.
    my cmos = A6728IMS v.50 092204
    thanks for any help

If you are still having problem. Please use the following configuration.
    ATA On Chip Mode: Native
    ATA Config: SATA
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: Both
    Set SATA as RAID: No
If it do not pick up, change mode from Native to Legacy.

  • K8MM3 needs reboot to see SATA drive

I have a Seagate Sata drive that does not get seen on boot up, bios asks for system disc when it times out looking for the hard drive, when I reboot it sees it immediately and posts correctly.
    2 x 512mb Crucial Ballistics
    300w power
using onboard everything no other periferals except keyboard / mouse

You probably have not enough power from the powersupply to make it boot properly at the first start.
A 300W PSU is simply way to low on the 12V amps for modern systems.

  • How to eject sata drives on express card bus

I recently added a Siig sata express card and two serial drives to my MacBook Pro. When mounted in the Finder there is no grey "eject arrow" to the right of the icon in the side bar like there is for usb or firewire mounted drives. How can I get one? Right now the only way I know to properly unmount the drive is using the program MainMenu or Disk Utility. Thanks for the help in advance.

They are separate drives. My express card has two eSATA ports. I installed the drives without any RAID arrays. I do get the card icon in my menu bar when it is on. The only function it allows though, is to power off the card. If I power off the card without ejecting the drives I get the warning message that I didn't properly unmount the drives before disconnecting. I see no reason why I would need to RAID these drives to get the OS to recognize them as external.

  • How to Install a 2nd SATA drive

    Hi,
I asked this before and got many views to my question but no responses, so I thought I would try one more time.
I have a PM G4 Gigabit ethernet and have two ATA drives installed and one SATA drive installed via a SATA PCI card.
What I would like to know is how do you or can you install a second SATA drive on top of the one that's already there? There is room for it to fit on top of the one I have installed, but the sled only provides for one to be mounted. The ATA sled is configured for two.
Any way to get a sled that fits where the SATA drives are installed, or how is that done? My PCI card does have an available SATA connector.
Sorry for the seemingly basic question, but I really don't know the answer.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Thnaks for the response David. Well, bot do I feel silly. I now see what I somehow never saw before. there is a space in between the ATA driove slots and the SATA drive slot whicvh is where the 4th drive fits. Well, Duuuhhhh?
I have thought of going with a SATA external drive, thing is there are not many SATA external drives out there, also would need a SATA pci card for that. I see that Firm Tek is just now getting into that so I may wait a while. Its' a 160GB SATA drive so it would be a nice addition to backups, testing drives etc.
    So what part of Georgia?

  • [Athlon64] CAN'T SEE SINGLE SATA DRIVE / K8T NEO no Promise controller

I have a K8t NEO -the cheapskate version with no PROMISE SATA controller or on-board Firewire
I have been running on XP SP2 on 2 IDE drives, everything is ok.  I added a SINGLE SATA drive and turned the VIA SATA controller on in BIOS. I did the MSI Live Update and have the latest VIA SATA driver, latest chipset, latest BIOS, latest EVERYTHING. At boot, the VIA SATA controller reports my Hitachi SATA as Channel 0  Primary"  in the SATA devices table.  Going into the SATA RAID menu it tells me "You can't make RAID with just one drive"  which is true, of course.  But the point is the controller SEES the drive.
I've run MSI Live Update and have the latest BIOS, latest SATA XP driver, latest EVERYTHING.
Windows XP doesn't see the SATA drive.
In XP  I see a VIA RAID CONTROLLER in Hardware / Device Manager  which is DISABLED.   When I right-click then click ENABLE on the VIA RAID CONTROLLER  the machine reboots immediately.  I tried safe mode, same thing.  I tried BIOS settings of "No PNP O/S Installed"  and "Yes PNP O/S Installed"  and reset the NVRAM.  No change.
I think there must be an IRQ conflict....  I have a sound card (on-board sound is turned OFF in BIOS) and AGP video card, and that's it- no WiFi NIC or anything else to eat up IRQ resources. I use the Realtek on-board ethernet.
I tried my Windows 98 partition and that booted, detected the new hardware (VIA SATA) and I installed the driver from the MSI CD  and Win 98 is happy with the SATA drive..... it sees the drive just fine.
How do I make Windows XP see the SATA drive?

Have you tried starting XP with CD and entering recovery, log on as admin and see if SATA drive is there? Remember to "F6" with a floppy drive of SATA drivers for
-XP-... I'm assuming you already have as you said all is uptodate.  When the boot BIOS for the VIA SATA apprears and you press "TAB" I believe it is, you can mess with the SATA functions. Sorry if does not apply to your compy or you've already done all this.... BTW you CAN run a RAID array with one HDD, at least thats what I did on my Promise controller.
In my Device Manager under Disk drives it looks like this (notes bracketed are noting position):
Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 1, LUN 0 (G:\ 1-160GB IDE Seagate/notice ONE drive)
    Promise 2+0 Stripe/RAID0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (F:\ 2x200 SATA)
    ST3160023A (Location 1 (1) VIA IDE D:\)
VIA SATA RAID 0 SCSI Disk Device (Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0) (E:\ 2x120 SATA)
    WDC WD800JB-00CRA1 (Location 0 (0) VIA IDE C:\)
Under the boards BIOS, is the SATA drive listed under the BOOT table??? In my system it lists the above 5 partitions (7 HDD's total), floppy, 2 CD/DVD drives, etc...
Oh also in Device Manager IS the VIA SATA controller appearing in the "SCSI and RAID controllers" tab??? I have set mine to just SATA before and of course now it says "VIA SATA RAID Controller"... for you it should read "VIA SATA Controller". Remember there are 2 different drivers for the SATA controller, one for SATA and one for SATA RAID. Look on your floppy disk or if you saved out the updated driver. I made a new floppy with the latest XP drivers. When booting from WINXP CD, and promted for "F6" and press it, later it will show you TWO different drivers after reading the floppy disk for XP. You obviously want the non RAID driver... hope that helps somewhat... g'luck

  • How to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive?

I am trying without much success to use a single Maxtor 200 GB SATA drive in a non-RAID configuration running Windows XP Home SP 2+. I obtained documentation from the MSI Download site that explains how to do such a thing. However ...
First, out of the box the Drivers & Utilities CD is useless -- can't read it, simply hangs the CD drive.
Second, the drivers from the Download site (IATA_ICH5R) return "incompatible hardware. software not supported on this chipset" messages.
So where do I get the drivers required to install Windows XP on a single SATA drive (to use at point F6 in the Windows XP installation)?
    Regards,
    Bob (ll1951md)
    P.S. Configuration ...
    865PE/G Neo2-P (MS-6728) w/ Intel Extreme Graphics 2, Realtek ALC655 Audio
2 GB Corsair Dual Channel DDR Memory
    Intel P4 3.0e GHz Processor
1 Maxtor 200 GB SATA HD
1 HDS 120 GB ATA HD

Thanks for the tips. I was able to install Windows XP and boot from the SATA drive by using these options and setting the appropriate boot device selections...
    Legacy Mode
    ATA Configuration - PATA only
    SATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA Keep enabled - yes
    PATA channel selection - both
    Combined Mode Option - S-ATA 1st Channel
    S-ATA Ports Definition - P0 - 3rd./P1 - 4th.
I just wasn't sure if I was really getting "SATA" performance, etc. without specific drivers.
    Thanks again.

  • How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??

How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??
i have 2 IDE hard disks & 2 CDROM drives: can install SATA hard disk added to these drives or do i have to remove some???
& if it can be added, can i install 2 SATA drives???
    THX in advance

The 3 versions of this board that are available are:
    875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0)
    875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)
All of these boards will have the following ports provider by the chipsets ICH5R south bridge.
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
    2 x PATA (Supporting 4 IDE devices)
All 6 of these can be used at the same time (provided you are using win XP or 2K) you just need to make sure yor BIOS is set right.
    ->INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS
    ->ON-CHIP IDE CONFIG
ATA CONFIG: S-ATA ONLY or P-ATA ONLY
    S-ATA/P-ATA KEEP ENABLED: YES
    OPERATE MODE:
If you set to "legacy mode" S-ATA are set to channel 1 and 2 and P-ATA to channel 3 and 4. If you set to "native mode" P-ATA are channel 1 and 2 and S-ATA 3 and 4. You can only use the raid functionfon SATA in native mode.
If you have the 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0) you will also have the following ports provided by the Promise PDC20378 PCI controller:
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
1 x PATA (Supporting 1 Master IDE HDD drive)
The PATA port is limited to 1 Master HDD by the lite BIOS. This can in theory be upgraded to the full BIOS supporting a master and a slave, but this may obviously void your warranty.
So the answer to your origional question is:
    2 x SATA HDDs and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) or 875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    or
    4 x SATA HDDs, 1 x IDE HDD (2 if you modify the BIOS) and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

What exactly are you trying to do? PVRs are for recording from TV not computers.
Either way, if it's complaining about DOS mode, it's Windows oriented software and not Mac compatible.
